Charity drive sees Bracknell Foodbank receive

a bumper donation!

Kind-hearted golfers have clubbed together to donate essential items to a Bracknell charity which supports cash-strapped families to tackle food poverty and hunger locally.

Bracknell Food Bank partnered up with Royal Ascot Golf Club whose members and guests donated scores of food items and toiletries to a collection point which was setup at the beginning of the year.

Based at Kerith Community Church, the charity operates under The Trussell Trust which oversees 1300 foodbanks nationally and has provided over 2.9million three-day emergency food supplies to families since 2022.

The Bracknell branch also works with a network of agencies to offer additional support where necessary to help individuals with financial advice, job hunting plus reading and writing skills.

Donations made by Royal Ascot Golf Club members will be used to support the production of Bracknell Food Bank’s food parcels which have been formulated by nutritionists to supply three days of balanced meals.

Claire Mather, food bank manager at Bracknell Food Bank, thanked the club for its support and encouraged others to do what they can to break the cycle of poverty.

“There are people in the UK who will go hungry for a multitude of reasons every day,” said Claire. “The cost-of-living crisis has without doubt placed additional pressure on low income families and the need for services like Bracknell Food Bank has never been greater.

“Something as simple as a box of food not only makes a huge difference to the lives of those who receive them, but also helps prevent housing loss, family breakdowns and mental health problems.

“We’re fortunate to be supported by a fantastic team of volunteers, local churches and community groups who make our operation to stop hunger and poverty locally possible.

“We’re very grateful to Royal Ascot Golf Club and its members for this kind donation which will directly support families in Bracknell to navigate the difficult time they are experiencing.”

The club’s donation follows the release of a report by The Trussell Trust which revealed seven per cent of people in the UK say they or their household have experienced food insecurity over a 12-month period.

Furthermore, 71 per cent of people experiencing food insecurity have not used any form of food aid in the last year.

Matthew Mavin of Royal Ascot Golf Club added: “Food poverty is a very real issue in the UK right now.

“We were shocked to learn of The Trussell Trust’s latest statistics and asked for the support of our members to help play a small role in reversing these concerning trends locally.

“Bracknell Food Bank acts as a lifeline for families and individuals who may be struggling, and we were pleased with the response to our appeal which formed a key part of our role as a club embedded within the community.

“A huge thank you to our members who donated, and to Bracknell Food Bank whose work continues to ensure people living locally have every opportunity to live a life void of hunger.”

Royal Ascot Golf Club appoints Lisa Trodd to lead strategic growth

Royal Ascot Golf Club has appointed Lisa Trodd as Head of Sales and Marketing, to lead the club’s strategic growth.

Lisa brings more than 12 years of experience in sports and marketing to the role, including with the NFL and most recently as Head of Marketing at SEKO Logistics covering the UK & Ireland.

The appointment comes shortly after the club was named as runner-up in the Club of the Year Category at the England Golf Awards for its investments in improving its facilities and youth engagement strategies.

Lisa said: “Royal Ascot is a prestigious, inclusive and community-oriented club and I am proud to be joining at a time of ambitious growth.

“I look forward to implementing the club’s ambitious plans, including developing closer sponsorship and commercial relationships with the local businesses community and expanding our membership with more young people, new starters and women.

Lisa’s appointment forms part of Royal Ascot Golf Club’s long-term development strategy which includes ongoing major works to transform the club’s 18-hole course into one of the UK’s leading playing facilities.

Improvements to outside areas including the clubhouse, pro shop and swing studio are planned, with a new scholarship programme to encourage more youngsters into playing golf in an organised environment set to launch later this year.

The PGA of America Renews Partnership with Women’s Golf Day

Under the agreement, PGA of America Golf Professionals can participate in professional development opportunities while supporting WGD, starting by attending the WGD annual PGA Show panel discussion “Women as Economic Influencers” on January 25 at 10 a.m. EST at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Porthmadog Golf Club

As many of our readers know, North Wales has a fantastic selection of golf courses, all of which offer some great examples of British golf. However, Porthmadog GC seems to be one of the pinnacle courses in the region. We recently visited the club and after having played the course we were left in no doubt of its quality.

The course itself is a story of two halves and does not disappoint. Starting on the first nine you are welcomed by some of the most fantastic scenery in the region, with exceptional views of the surrounding Snowdonia mountain range. Whilst the first nine is welcoming it also offers a real challenge. You are welcomed by a heathland terrain on the first. This hole itself is renowned for being one of the most challenging opening holes in the region with various hazzards that can catch you out, from out of bounds to a burn that runs across the front of the green as well as trees on your left. It is clear that accuracy is of huge importance.

Moving through the front nine scoring well can be difficult and if you are playing anywhere near your handicap by the end of the front nine you have done well.

The back nine however is a real gem. As you travel round this part of the course the views are simply stunning. It hugs itself to the coastline of Cardigan Bay and is home to some of the most memorable holes in Wales. The Thirteenth tee is absolutely stunning, standing on the elevated tee you have to take a few minutes just to take in the natural beauty of the links side of the course. Moving through the back nine you do have a chance to score well, however course management is key to this part of the course as it holds hidden dangers such as fairway bunkers, out of bounds, undulating fairways and coastal grass all coming into play at some point.

Following on from your round there is a rather comfortable and relaxing clubhouse offering a wide selection of food and beverages. They also offer Dormy accommodation that starts at around £70 per person per night. The rooms are airy, bright and modern and is situated adjacent to the clubhouse itself.

SEAHOUSES GOLF CLUB

Seahouses Golf Club has been a centre of golfing excellence in Northumberland since it was founded in 1913. Originally designed by Alnmouth greenkeeper, George Rochester, the traditional northern golf course features two of the most prestigious par three’s in the North of England.

The Seahouses’ 10th requires players to tee off across a Loch which stretches tee to green whilst the vastly unique, 15th hole features sea tee to green – a magnificent feature of an already highly regarded golf course.

In 1976, Seahouses’ original 9-hole layout was extended to the eighteen holes that can be enjoyed today and, since this time, the golf club has hosted many Northumberland Golf County events.

Today, the par 67 golf course measures 5608 yards and although on the short side in this day and age it poses a unique and memorable challenge from the championship white tees with magnificent views of the Northumbrian Coastline.

Seahouses Golf Club were awarded GolfMark accreditation at the end of 2018 – a huge achievement for a club of its size and something that members and the management team can be very proud of.

Bingley St Ives Golf Club was founded in 1931 originally as a nine hole layout. Extended to 18 holes in 1934, the course meanders through different settings for golf, switching between parkland, woodland and moorland surroundings.

The Bingley course was designed with instruction from legendary golf course architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie who has left many of his attributes on the course which can be see today, including tiered greens and a design that encompasses the nature of the landscape surrounding the golf course.

Seaton Carew Golf Club 10th Oldest Club In England

Founded in 1874, Seaton Carew Golf Club will be celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024 and the club has a rich golfing history as the 10th oldest in England. It was also the first to be established in the counties of Durham & Yorkshire, something which is still celebrated on the club’s crest and in its original name of Durham & Yorkshire Golf Club.

As part of its anniversary activities, Seaton Carew will be hosting England Golf’s premier tournament, the English Amateur Championships which take place between the 28th of July and 4th of August. The 2024 event will be even more significant because it’s also the governing body’s centenary year.

Uniquely, Seaton Carew has 22 holes which are played as two different layouts, although only one is in play at a given time. The Old Course, played mainly in the winter, and the Micklem, used in the summer, each have differing WHS course and slope ratings, both making for an enjoyable test of golfing ability.

The Old Course is the creation of legendary golf architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie, whilst the Micklem includes three holes designed by Frank Pennink. The latter will be used as the venue for the English Amateur Championships. The club is very proud of its MacKenzie heritage and is currently working with MacKenzie & Ebert to restore many of the bunkers to the great doctor’s original designs.

The fast-draining soil means golf can be played almost 365 days a year at Seaton Carew making it a very attractive winter golf destination. Golfers often compliment the club on the tightly-mown fairways and fast running greens as they thread their way between almost one hundred deep-faced bunkers and contend with whatever the elements throw at them. One thing’s for sure, breaking par will be quite an achievement!

GANTON GOLF CLUB

Yorkshires long-acknowledged premier course is said to be the finest inland layout in the country. A catalogue of impressive Top100 World rankings, place Ganton amongst the ‘Who’s Who’ of the world’s top golfing locations.

Golf was first played in Ganton in the summer of 1891. The course was originally laid out by St Andrews’ Tom Chisolm, and has since been touched by most leading golf course architects over the years, including Braid, Colt, Fowler, Taylor and MacKenzie. Not resting on their laurels, the Club has recently embarked on a major restoration project

under the direction of leading golf course architect Martin Ebert. Clearance of gorse has revealed natural sand lines that had been lost over time – the dramatic scale of these sand areas provides great challenge and pleasing natural aesthetics.

Ganton is the only inland UK Club to host the Ryder, Curtis & Walker Cups, and the Amateur Championship among many other significant events. CALCOT PARK

Situated on the Berkshire/Hampshire border, Calcot Park Golf Club is a historic and traditional members' golf club. Designed by the legendary Harry Colt and opened in 1930, it represents the perfect location for society golf.

The club sits within an exclusive private estate, its parkland setting enhancing the ambience of the course itself. Eyes are often attracted to the wildlife when playing the course whilst the changing seasons are complemented by the colours of the trees which abound.

Calcot Park is an undulating, traditional, parkland course rated in the top six golf clubs in Berkshire and is recognised as one of the best in the area. Designer Harry Colt also built, amongst others, Beaconsfield, Denham, Stoke Park, Sunningdale Old, Swinley Forest along with the East and West courses at Wentworth Club in Surrey.

The 18-hole course, Par 70 and SSS 71, is 6,300 yards off the White Tees and is acknowledged as a demanding, yet fair test of golf.

There are two par-5s, both reachable in two by strong hitters and four excellent par-3s, including the 7th, the signature hole, played across a lake to an elevated green. The 13th is played across a stream in a shallow valley to a contoured green.

The course opens and closes with two, long par4s. There are three small practice areas, practice nets and two practice chipping and putting greens. Calcot Park has an abundance of mature trees and shrubs and the area surrounding the course are home to a variety of wildlife including badgers, foxes and deer.

In particular, golf societies and companies are most welcome to take advantage of the fine course and facilities, with a number of packages available to suit all tastes and budgets. The superb, fully licensed restaurant will further complement a round of golf.

A few extras can be added to the Golf Society Day to complete the experience. Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive markers can be put out on the course at no additional charge, and there is even a halfway refreshment option.

Experience the popular, Whittington Heath Golf Club

Originally the site of Lichfield Races, golf at Whittington Heath Golf dates back to 1886. Following the construction of army barracks in 1877, it was first known as the Whittington Barracks Golf Club and, for some years open only for Military personnel.

In 1927, world renowned golf course designer, Harry Colt instructed to remodel and extend the course to 18 holes. The course was later purchased from the Military of Defence in 1994 and became the Whittington Heath Golf Club.

The original grandstand building adjacent to the Tamworth Road has served as the clubhouse since 1957. Today, the new refurbished clubhouse building provides a pleasant ambience with the traditional lounge bar the main focal point of the club, where members and visitors can enjoy a drink and excellent home cooked cuisine with friends and family.

The clubhouse also features a lively Spike bar and wonderful patio with views of the golf course. The new halfway house building also offers comfortable respite, serving mid round refreshments.

We now have ‘The Hub’ model which is widely used on the Continent and in the United States and also have a fully functioning halfway house as well as a new young vibrant catering team. Often referred to as Britain’s Best Par 3 Course, the Cromwell Course at Nailcote Hall features nine holes that have been cleverly designed to ensure it is perfect for beginners but also provides a unique challenge to even the most accomplished of golfer.

Home to hazards of a full size golf course, players must find their way around no less than 23 bunkers, water hazards, tiered greens and tough pin positions

The course offers a challenging round for all levels of golfer demanding accuracy from each tee and is the ideal course for corporate and society golf days, as well as being the host of the Annual Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, which took place across 9th – 12th August in 2022.

Enjoying a relaxed yet competitive environment, the championship was played long before the traditional Masters Par 3 prior to the main event. The Cromwell course took over hosting the event from The Palace Hotel in 1996 and has never looked back, going from strength to strength each year with a fantastic field of PGA Professionals and household golfing and sporting names in the Pro-Am.

There are also many sponsorship opportunities and an Open competition held in the run up to the event, which determines a lucky competitor who will rub shoulders with the Professionals on the Cromwell course in August. George Denley was this year’s amateur qualifier who was lucky enough to compete at the Championship.

Each year, the Championship is competed by some esteemed Professionals which have included Tommy Fleetwood, Danny Willet and Charley Hull. Whilst celebrities taking on the challenge in the Pro-Am have included Peter Schmeichel, Nigel Mansell CBE and Len Goodman to name but a few. “This Par 3 championship course is truly a hidden gem just outside historic city of culture Coventry. A course like no other we have played, it was maintained to perfection and offers nine uniquely stunning holes of golf ranging from 95 to 146 yards.

The Cromwell was a really interesting and true test of our short game with elevated greens, most with bunkers around them. All greens were surrounded with lush grass, whilst water comes into play on six of the nine holes.

Respite from bunkers on the last but with water short, long and left is another great test. This course isn’t about power it’s all about feel and finesse and there’s no wonder it is home to the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship.

The Cromwell was great fun for all abilities. We cannot wait to play here again with the guarantee of a short game improvement. We really enjoyed the day, friendly staff and members in the wonderful 17th Century Country House Hotel. Fantastic for everyone’s short game and great fun!!”

After a period of neglect and following the end of the First World War, renowned golf course designer, Dr Alastair MacKenzie was commissioned to design and supervise the reconstruction of the South Cliff golf course.

The seaward side of the golf course is at one with the elements and represents a true test of links golf; whilst, the holes of the land-ward side of the course are laid out at the bottom of a rolling valley stretching southwards into the hills and on the slope of the ridge to the east.

The South Cliff clubhouse was later added in 1930 and the Professional Shop in 1937.

Recent investment in the golf clubs facilities has ensured that the course is in magnificent condition all year round and that the clubhouse is the ideal venue for all manner of social events.

The course saw major investment in May 2005 with five completely new holes added, and the redesign of the remaining holes to create the current yardage of 6,576 yards from the championship, white tees with a par of 72.

Durabunker were also instructed by the club to renovate twenty-three of the course’s bunkers. Twenty-three bunkers were then renovated with two of the larger bunkers being split into two new bunkers each - a positive feature giving definition and shape to the holes.

Edzell Golf Club

Grantown-on-Spey Golf Club is one of the finest golf venues within the Cairngorms National Park area.
