Your Golfer Magazine Reviews The Stunning Sherwood

Forest Golf Club

Sherwood Forest Golf Club is home to the oldest and in our opinion the best Heathland course in the UK.

From the first hole to the last this course requires concentration and accuracy from the tee. With 98 bunkers laid out perfectly across 18 holes of mature heathland, true and fast greens with not a bump in them, this is a course that can offer a challenge to even the best golfers.

Starting at the first you are challenged with 322 par four which can be a gentle introduction to the course with a short carry over heather being the only real hurdle. It gives you a good opportunity to open with a par. However, do not be lulled into a false sense of security!

As we move gradually through the front nine there are good opportunities to score well. You must be straight and course management is an absolute must to avoid the bunkers and the heather which is waiting to catch any wayward shots. From The First tee to the fifth you will play a loop of holes with the clubhouse still in sight. Once on the fifth tee you are faced with the first par five of your round. Distance and accuracy are key . You then disappear into the Nottinghamshire countryside for the rest of your round.

The back nine is a different story. From speaking to a couple of the members prior to our round, we were told that golfers very rarely better their front nine score on the back, and how right they were.

When you start the back nine the course seems to close in on you a little and you are generally teeing off into the wind. This gives yet another problem to think about when selecting the right club. But what a challenge it offers. No wonder this course is rated the 35th best course in England!

From the 10th going through to the 18th concentration is key and so is a course planner, as often you will be taking blind tee shots over heather. Our favourite hole of the course was the 17th a short par four with a perfectly positioned bunker on the left of the fairway and a cluster of big trees on the right, which make you think about taking something different then your driver to put yourself in the correct position with a slight dog leg left running down to the inviting green.

Away from the course itself the facilities are excellent with a 300-yard driving range and a beautifully kept chipping and putting area including bunkers (of course). The clubhouse is a subtle mix of the modern and traditional. It has everything you would expect from a club with such history, gold leaf boards naming past captains and comp winners and glorious views of the course. The food is hearty, home cooked and most importantly value for money, making it the ideal place to relax and look back on this wonderful course.

The pro shop is also well stocked with some of the latest names in golf course fashion. A nice touch in the clubhouse is a free sun screen dispenser! We thought this was an excellent idea. How often have you come off the course sunburnt due to no sunscreen??

Overall, Sherwood Forest Golf Club is a fantastic venue for visitors and/or societies that are looking for a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable golf experience. In our opinion it is a "must play" course.

We hope to be back in the end of the Summer as we understand the course really comes alive around August and September and gives yet another challenge.

LEGENDS TOUR ANNOUNCES NEW TOURNAMENT TO ACTION-PACKED SUMMER SCHEDULE

The Legends Tour has announced it will be holding a new tournament in the UK this summer as Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club welcomes back major international professional golf.

Taking place between August 12-14, The Legends Trophy will see some of the game’s most decorated players visit the Hertfordshire venue as they compete in what will be the third UK tournament held in the month of August.

Two-time DP World Tour winner Simon Khan – who famously won the 2010 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a one-shot victory over fellow Englishman Luke Donald and Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed – will host the event as he welcomes his fellow Legends Tour players to his home course.

Khan said: “Hanbury Manor was one of the original new courses – a Nicklaus design back in the early 1990s. There are a lot of exciting holes on the course, and it should bring a lot of entertainment.

“I am looking forward to raising my level and being in contention to win. I didn’t really have that last year; maybe in one event in the Seychelles but that was it. I want to have that feeling again and that is why we play.

“What I am really looking forward to is everyone coming to play my home course and having it set up really well. If everyone comes away and has enjoyed themselves – hopefully I play well and beat them all as well – that would be great.”

Originally designed by Harry Vardon before being redesigned by Jack Nicklaus II, the parkland course at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club stretches over 7,000 yards and offers a true challenge to any golfer. A previous host of a number of tournaments including the English Open and the Ladies European Open, The Legends Trophy will be the first major international tournament the par72 course has hosted since the DP World Tour’s English Championship in 2020.

You can pre-register your interest in tickets HERE.

www.legendstour.com

Tickets will be on sale for the event from Friday, May 19 at 9am, with an early booking promotion available. Adult tickets cost £10, with over 50s at £7.50 and juniors (under 16s) receiving free entry.

Phil Harrison, Legends Tour chief executive officer, said: “Since our Legends Tour rebranding in 2020, our ambition has been to keep growing. The introduction of The Legends Trophy is another example of that.

“We are delighted to be bringing major international golf back to Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club and are extremely pleased that Simon Khan has agreed to host at his home course. The whole event promises to be a great few days of golf, so I would encourage everyone who can to head down and see some great golf.”

The upcoming Legends Tour season promises to be the biggest since its rebranding in 2020, with larger fields, record-breaking prize funds and new venues hosting major events like Trump International Golf Links Aberdeen and Seapoint Golf Links – a rising star in the ranks of Irish links courses just an hour north of Dublin.

Last year, former Ryder Cup captains and Major winners including Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, Ian Woosnam and Thomas Bjorn all competed on the Legends Tour as South African James Kingston secured the Legends Tour Order of Merit to win the John Jacobs Trophy.

If you’re interested in watching the Legends in action in Hertfordshire, you can purchase tickets from Friday, May 19 at 9am on the Legends Tour website.

Citizen Golfing Society held their first tournament of the season on Tuesday 23 May at North Warwickshire Golf Club Meriden.

The event was won by new member Mark Fazakarley who is a Maintenance Supervisor.

Mark has a handicap of 21 and his Stableford Score was 35. The runner up was Andy Bayliss –Housing Support Manager who has a handicap of 16 and his Stableford Score was 33.

They have scheduled further events on 20 June and 18 July and will be holding their finals day on Thursday 7 September. The venues for these events have yet to be finalised.

With their next article they hope to provide a bit of light relief in the form of a fun cryptic quiz for all readers of Your Golfer.

New captains appointed at Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club

Three new captains have been appointed at thriving Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club.

A ceremonial hickory-shafted club was used as they drove off at a special Captains’ Drivein event which marked the launch of the new season.

The new club captain is semi-retired financial planner John Sherlock, 58, who has lived in South Lakeland for 35 years and has been a member of Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club for 30 years.

“I have a passion for the club and am so proud to have been asked to represent it as captain,” said John.

“It is a very friendly club. We have golf etiquette that everyone follows but there is such a relaxed atmosphere. The board which runs the club promotes inclusivity and everyone gets on well with everyone else.

“Post-COVID we have seen an upsurge in the number of people wanting to play golf. Graham Bywater, the previous captain, and his team did an excellent job in retaining the existing membership and recruiting new members and, as the new captain, I intend to support people to keep that work going. The club is going from strength to strength.”

John described golf as a social sport. “People of any ability can play together. You could be the world’s best golfer playing against the world’s worse golfer but the handicap system ensures a competitive game. I play lots of golf although I am not particularly good at it – I am only a ten handicapper – but I get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. You are out on the course and having plenty of exercise.”

John said he had still to achieve a coveted hole-in-one. “I have been close on numerous occasions - sometimes within a few millimetres of the hole – but I have not achieved it yet.”

“I find the social side of golf and the camaraderie of the ladies to be quite therapeutic,” she said. “It is very enjoyable to play in the leagues in and around Cumbria at different courses and to make new friends.”

getintouch@kirkbylonsdalegolfclub.com www.kirkbylonsdalegolfclub.com

The new ladies captain is Lyn Bond, a retired estate agent, who took up golf 12 years ago. John Sherlock, new club captain (right), Lyn Bond, lady captain and Nick Almond, seniors captain, at the Captains' Drive-off at Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club.

Lyn, who has played for Cumbria Vets and won the Vets Bronze Trophy, added: “I have been involved at Kirkby Lonsdale with Get Into Golf, an initiative which encourages ladies to try golf in a nice environment with other ladies. This year we have gained ten new members through the scheme.”

She said the lady captain always supported a charity during her year in office. “I lost my husband Ray last May and I have raised funds for the North West Air Ambulance in his memory so my aim is to continue this year.”

Lyn has taken over as lady captain from Lyn Benson.

The new seniors captain is Nick Almond, 67, a retired police officer who lives at New Hutton. Nick started playing golf at 16 and has been a member at Kirkby Lonsdale since 1995.

“I like the friendly atmosphere and you cannot beat the surroundings,” he said.

“Kirkby Lonsdale has two nine-hole loops so it is one of the few courses where you can play nine holes and end up back at the clubhouse.”

He said he was looking forward to the regular seniors’ competitions and the seniors team playing friendlies against neighbouring clubs.

Nick has taken over as seniors captain from Bill Rowan.

Around 100 members took part in the Captains’ Drive-off event.

John Sherlock said it was a special day because, unusually, so many members were gathered at the first tee. It was also a useful event for new members to get to know other people as, potentially, they could play a round with people they had not met before.

The winners at the event were: Gareth Parry (gents’ competition); Linda Francis (ladies) and Rob Burke (seniors).

People were also able to buy markers to predict where each captain’s first shot would land on the fairway. Those who were closest won a bottle of wine and the competition also raised money for local charities.

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club was established in 1906 and has been at its present site since 1991. The 18-hole course measures 6,594 yards and is laid out in more than 160 acres of spectacular countryside. Each of the holes has its own unique character and has four tee options, providing different degrees of difficulty. The River Lune and Barbon Beck both run through the course, which offers amazing views of Barbon Fell and the Howgills.

Other facilities include a swing room with launch monitor; a short game chipping area; a pro shop selling equipment and clothing; and ten driving range bays.

Ingestre Park Golf Club

In 2013 it was announced that the proposed path of the new high speed train was to go through Ingestre Park Golf Club. Fast forward to 2021 and it was with great excitement that MJ Abbott, contractors, started work on a truly fantastic course design by International Design Group, course architects. Over the past two years we have seen the creation of the new holes develop and in April this year the first three new holes opened much to the delight of those who have played them, with comments such as ‘very impressed’ and ‘really enjoyed playing them’. It is therefore with much eagerness we wait for the remaining holes to ‘grow-in’ and open for play.

Jon Hunt, Golf Course Architect

"I am thrilled to announce that our newest creation is nearing opening. This course has been in the pipeline for over a decade, and we have poured our hearts and souls into its design to create a truly exceptional golfing experience.

The course is set in the stunning Staffordshire countryside, nestled among rolling hills and ancient woodlands. The course features 13 brand new holes and 5 renovated holes, all with their own unique challenges. The course is designed to be challenging yet fair, with a variety of tee boxes to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.

One of the highlights of the course is the signature 18th, a mid-length par three that requires golfers to hit their ball over a large water hazard to reach the green. It's a thrilling shot that will test even the most seasoned golfer's nerves.

On the old course, most tee shots required a central playing line with little strategy. Now, each hole has a playing strategy of its own, where every club in the bag is used, and every shot type tested. Take the new 5th for example: A strong tee shot will be played left across the creek to a narrow fairway for an easier line into the diagonal green. The weaker tee shot is rewarded by a wide open fairway but a much more difficult line into the green.

01889 270845 office@ingestregolf.co.uk

On the first site visit, we knew the construction of the new course would be a challenge. The majority of the site was relatively flat and open farmland and we would have to work hard to ensure the course didn’t feel like playing in a field. In addition, the drainage would be a serious task as the new land was often flooded. Both new and renovated areas of the course have had the benefit of a new subsurface drainage system with 100mm pipes laid at 6m centres across the turfgrass. The new topography of the course, along with this drainage system will ensure the course can open year round with no days lost to soggy ground conditions. A significant part of the new drainage system requires open ditches and these have been used to inform the playing strategy so choose wisely off the tee.

A new automatic irrigation system was installed to tees, greens, approaches and the centrelines of the fairways to maintain great conditions throughout the summer. This is all assisted by the installation of 3 large lakes which will store water that is harvested from the surrounding drainage system. We have incorporated natural features like streams and wetlands into the design, creating stunning vistas and a dynamic playing experience.

All the greens have been rebuilt to USGA recommendations meaning a perfect growing medium for the bentgrass greens and resulting in a reliable and enjoyable putting surface. Some of the greens have significant movement in them so watch out for the breaks!

We are confident that Ingestre Park will become a beloved destination for golfers from across the country as well as a fantastic new course for the hundreds of members. "

Final words from the Club

“This project is very special indeed and has brought together the very best teams and companies in the industry to create, what will be, an unquestionably exceptional golf course at Ingestre Park.

We look forward to seeing you!”
