Review

CARDEN PARK, CHESHIRE A Golfers Dream…? Or a Luxury Weekend Getaway ??? You decide !!!!!

A

s a writer for magazines such as this, I often get opportunities to review golf clubs, golf hotels and resorts across the UK. Some of the resorts and clubs that I have visited, not only in my capacity as a writer for this magazine but also as a golf enthusiast has varied over the years from some of the smaller “hidden gems” to some of the largest golf resorts in the country, but I cannot remember a time when I have experienced both in one place. Until now!

My recent visit to Cheshire led me to an estate just 15 minutes outside of Chester called Carden Park. Turning off the main road I was immediately taken aback by the drive that leads up to the main hotel. Whist it is a full mile long, it meanders its way through Carden Park’s “Nicklaus course” (designed by the great Jack Nicklaus himself!!), which is just one of the two championship courses that are on offer to golfers visiting Carden Park. Upon my arrival I felt the hotel itself had (what I can only describe as) a family feel to it, which I am sure will become apparent to you as you read on, even though it boasts 198 bedrooms, 2 Championship golf courses, a Spa, three restaurants and a three-acre vineyard. This estate still remains totally independent of any hotel chain and I believe it is this that gives it a unique feel and makes it a venue to be visited.

“At Carden Park there is an efficiency that you would expect from a main chain hotel resort, however it is also coupled with the fantastic attention to detail that you would expect from an independently owned establishment, making Carden Park a subtle mix of tradition and modernity.” The Features Editor Your Golfer Magazine

Before I could explore more of the hotel, I had been booked in to play on the Cheshire course with the resident PGA professional, Garry Houston. Garry has a wealth of knowledge having played on the tour circuit for more than 20 years and was a fascinating partner for the round. He has been part of Carden park’s story for the majority of his golfing life and offered many tips on avoiding the numerous hazards around the course. Over the 18 holes it became apparent that even though it is open all year it was still in immaculate condition. The greens were true, the course played well and used its natural hazards to its advantage, however, in places it still does give higher handicappers the opportunity to card a decent score! The round itself ended on the stunning 18th hole, which is set on a cliff top overlooking the entire estate and gives a real visual reminder of the course that you have just played. If you are looking to stay overnight, then the rooms on offer are up to date and more than comfortable. They all offer ensuite bathrooms/wetrooms with complimentary toiletries as well as 39 inch HD TVs and WIFI. Dinner is available from two restaurants, The Vines and Redmonds. I recommend Redmond’s: It’s a little more formal but well worth the effort, not only for the food on offer, including locally sourced best end of lamb and beef fillet, but also the gin bar, which is most enthusiastically run by “Roz”, somewhat of a gin expert and a mind of information on the subject.

The fact that there seems to be continued investment in the estate (including a rumoured £12m purpose built spa) shows the boundless ambition of the #TeamCarden and I firmly believe that it is only a matter of time until this resort is regarded as the best independent golf estate in the country.

Golf in the English Riviera With its natural landscape and unspoilt coastline, Devon is an iconic golfing hotspot with plenty of the ‘Top 100’ golf courses located in the region and first class facilities. Devon’s wonderful location and climate, friendly people and fantastic golf courses present a real attraction. To meet the challenges of the variety of courses, coupled with the spectacular panorama of the surrounding countryside or the many views out to sea; who can resist a trip to this golfing haven in the South West of England? The seaside town of Torquay, renowned for its healthy climate, is the centrepiece of the English Riviera. It has been one of the UK’s top holiday destinations since Victorian times, boasting some of the finest beaches in the country. Torquay also boasts a thriving and friendly golf club. Since the Club’s foundation in 1909 the course has matured into an enjoyable and rewarding test for golfers of all standards. If the tree-lined fairways and well-maintained greens are not enough to tempt you, perhaps the sensational views from the course across Lyme Bay to the east, or to the slopes of Dartmoor away to the west may do, as the beautiful parkland course meanders through mature woodland. espite its prominent location near to the business hub of the capital of England, the countryside surrounding London is home to quite a few golf courses. A recent trend; the growing love of urban golf has seen golf in a green, countryside setting traded for the grey, stone, inner-city street courses that London offers, so much so that the Urban Golf Championships are now held each year. TERRAIN AERATION

Airforce Fleet - Built on the Terralift concept

They will literally blow you out of the water.

In 2016, the UK saw 1100mm of rainfall with some places bearing the brunt of the harsh weather. It is not surprising then that golf courses, reliant on merciful winters and short bursts of intermittent rain over summer can sometimes become stuck in the mud when it comes to maintaining their grounds. Even with the best will in the world, and highly skilled and dedicated grounds teams, the often unrelenting and unexpected downpours can cause the UK’s best golf courses to cancel competitions, and close greens. The vast amounts of money lost to waterlogging each year is incredible, and without money left to reinvest into the upkeep of courses and clubhouses, and no sign of the rain stopping, the future of British golf could be in danger. Terrain Aeration have a range of products, custom built for the needs of a range of settings. For large areas (such as fairways and approaches), the Airforce Terralift, the quickest and heaviest of ground aeration products, is incredibly efficient.

However, with advancements in technology come intricate and inventive ways to solve problems. “Terrain Aeration” speciality contracting service are working miracles across the country’s fairways and greens, literally breathing life back into even the dampest of grounds. The idea is simple enough, by inserting a metre long probe into the ground and blasting air into the soil, a brand new network of cracks and fissures are created, allowing the excess water to drain away, leaving much reduced surface water and playable surfaces.

Off the back of this design, more precise and mobile siblings were conceived, including the Scamper which has proven time and time again its incredible versatility in dealing with a range of terrains.

They then inject a dried seaweed to give this new network of drainage a stronger structure, keeping the holes open. This kiss of life will inflate the ground, and make a golf course spring back into life over the rainy season, meaning no loss of income and satisfied members.

Pleasington GOLF CLUB

For seriously wet patches, the Airlift Tracker comes into its own, with tank-like conveyors spreading its area across a larger surface area to avoid sinking. The air pressure is adjusted to avoid any surface damage, and with all injection holes filled with porous aggregate, these machines leave no trace other than the refreshed and breathable surfaces they create.

Whilst it is clear than not all golf clubs are lucky enough to have naturally well-draining grounds. In fact, with the exception of links courses, the problems faced by water logging are not uncommon. The products supplied by Terrain Aeration will blow you away; don’t believe us? Visit their website which is overflowing with success stories from clubs who were drowning in missed opportunities until they sought professional advice.

WHATS THE POINT! When looking for a top quality destination for your golf trip, be it a society, a captains away day or simply a golf break as a couple, the choice seems to get more and more diverse as time goes by. Naturally you would think of areas of Scotland or even perhaps go abroad, however a particular part of the West Country is making a name for itself as one of the most memorable golf courses in the South West of England. The Point At Polzeath has been earning plaudits over recent years and quite righly so! Whilst visitors are obviously encouraged to play “The Point” there is an awful lot more to this venue than a spectacular golf course. For instance, if you wanted to extend your stay for longer than just the day on the course, why not book into one of the five star self catering apartments that are available onsite? These new two and three bedroom apartments can be configured as twin or double rooms on request and have some stunning features such as bespoke fitted kitchens made by local craftsmen, wood burners, stone flooring, a private terrace to relax on after a long day on the

If you are here just for the day then there is still plenty to indulge yourself with following your round. The restaurant for instance is open every day, is family run and offers award winning a la carte food which can be enjoyed whilst taking time out on the beautifully appointed terrace that over looks the 9th and 18th greens, in which it has been reported that the best fish and chips in North Cornwall are regularly enjoyed by members and visitors alike. If time is pressing on you can simply enjoy the subtle charms of “The Bear Bar” where more informal bar snacks are available

It is well worth the time, effort and money to play the golf course at Silloth. Once you get there, you won’t want to leave!!

Cumbria is one of the most picturesque areas in England, offering quality golf courses for the enjoyment of the discerning golfer and visiting society groups within magnificent settings. The region’s number-one ranked golf course and a regular feature in the Top 100, Silloth on Solway Golf Club is home to what is highly-regarded as one of England’s finest links courses. Founded in 1892 with the help of Railway Company money, the Silloth course was originally designed by Davy Grant and has since evolved, with contributions from classic golf course architects, Dr Alister Mackenzie and Willie Park Jnr. Located in one of the most remote and isolated areas of England in the Cumbrian countryside and at the mouth of the Solway firth, Silloth’s fairways meander through the mature dune flora reminiscent of true links-style golf courses with tough, true greens providing a true test of links golf. With spectacular views across the firth, overlooking the Scottish Borders and Lake District, the blooming heather and patches of gorse that is in abundance make Silloth’s rolling fairways a safe haven. Add in the wind factor and you’ll rarely play to handicap. Even in the calm, Silloth is a tricky links course offering one of the most unique challenges in English golf. Silloth on Solway Golf Club represents excellent value for money. In 2016, National Club Golfer magazine voted it the ‘No 1 Course in Britain and Ireland under £100’.

Conwy Golf Club

Conwy Golf Club, located at the very top of Conwy county on the Wales coastline offers a unique golfing experience on one of few true links courses. It’s proximity to major cities such as Liverpool and Manchester make this course easily accessible for a day out. However, when you see the beauty that North Wales has to offer, with the legendary Llandudno pier and the historic walled town of Conwy just a stone’s throw away, it is hard to deny yourself a long weekend. The course offers something truly unique to all players; it is the only Open Championship qualifying venue in Wales, and with its vulnerability to the elements offers a challenge to even the most experienced of players. The bigger the challenge, the bigger the reward; it is no wonder this historic links has been chosen to host numerous prestigious championships, including the 2020 transatlantic Curtis Cup.

North Wales is home to some phenomenal courses, and of course blessed with the characteristic firm turf, readily drainable all year round. This makes these courses amongst the best kept secrets of golfing societies from all over the UK who continue to return to this hidden gem. The course at Conwy Golf Club is undisputedly and breathtakingly beautiful, with the Conwy mountains towering over this 6,910 yard golfer’s paradise, panoramas both Llandudno and the isle of Anglesey visible over the magnificent estuary on clear days. The splendour of the scenery surrounding this this characteristic links course, is matched by its impressive quality, with highly maintained holes all year round.

The reviews of this course speak for itself – “The Nomadic Golfer” rated this course as the best in North Wales and was particularly taken with the scenery, the friendliness of staff and a particularly challenging back nine, encouraging players to keep their concentration until they’re back to the clubhouse. With the numerous bunkers and unforgiving gorse lining the fairway, it is easy to see how a promising score card can come undone from a few bad drives.

The club prides itself on its open and welcoming attitude to players of all standards, clearly visible in every interaction with the friendly and accommodating staff. The facilities in the fully functional and modern clubhouse, take full advantage of the outstanding beauty of the course allowing you to enjoy the views even after you’ve finished your round. Rutland County Golf Club has a rapidly growing reputation as an outstanding inland links-style course, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Their excellent facilities and incredibly wellmaintained greens have attracted the attention of golf societies from all over the UK. Rutland is the UK’s smallest county, and fulfils its motto “Multum in Parvo” – “Much in little”, by being brimming with areas of incredible beauty; Rutland County Golf Club lies just a stone’s throw away from Rutland Water Reservoir and nature reserve, a ramble around which could make the perfect addition to a golfing weekend.

The Par 71, stretches across 6202 yards, and with wide fairways offers experienced players the chance to push their drives that little bit further. The quality of the greens and tees alike are always a feature of visitor reviews, who can’t help but to express their delight. Also on site is a 6-hole, par 3 course ideal for a short warm up, less experienced players or those who can’t quite manage a full day’s walking. With a fully equipped shop, flood lit driving range and modern clubhouse ready to host any event with elegance and comfort, the facilities at Rutland County Golf Club are truly exceptional.

Rutland is also home to delightfully charming towns such as Uppingham, famous for its thriving antiques trade and inspiring galleries. Also local, the historic town of Oakham, which houses an impressive 12th century castle, described as arguably the best surviving example of Normal architecture in the UK. Both have an impressive number of boutiques, intertwined with an assortment of well-known branded shops, and with no shortage of sights to see including exquisite scenery, either would make a wonderful pit stop for the golfer (and their family) seeking serenity before or after 18 holes.

Rutland County Golf Club also offers a brand new experience for those looking for a fun twist on the old game, or maybe to settle some scores; footgolf! Players need not cart around a trolley with a range of clubs, as instead they use their own leg power and technique to propel a size 5 football towards oversized flags. This could be the ideal activity to round off a phenomenal weekend in the idyllic Rutland scenery.

Despite being positioned just an hour from Leicester, Rutland County Golf Club offers a linksstyle course that is playable all year round, and with its vulnerability to the wind, can make for a challenging round. This makes the course a hidden gem, offering a unique experience to golf players of all standards.

Rank has already played in a monthly Captain and Pro Challenge for charity, organised a ladies pre-season fashion show, which proved highly successful and “All these events enhance the member experience and add value to their membership, it’s so important to help retain members.” While at Stoke Park, Rank was part of the golf team that won the coveted “Ultimate Members Club Award” from the 59Club in 2015. “These initiatives and successes are what I want to bring to The Herefordshire Golf Club.” "I've also looked at membership categories with a view to encouraging younger golfers. The club is sandwiched on all sides by areas of outstanding natural beauty, the Malvern hills, Brecon Beacon, and the Shropshire hills, the views around the course are breath- taking. The closest city to the course is the historic Hereford, which is around 30 minutes away; it’s easily accessible but also separate which is essential for the sense of escapism that only comes from being out on the course. Surrounded by the roaring hills, away from the rat race there’s nothing to distract you from your game. The club was founded in 1896 but moved to its current location on the Raven’s Causeway in 1932. The location itself was founded by James Braid, five times Open Championship winner turned prolific golf architect. It is located close to no less than 12 other golf clubs, offering a wonderful opportunity for golf tours in a beautiful part of the UK. The course itself is described as “The Gleneagles of the Midlands”, and has made a name for itself as a challenging course, where every hole offers up a new test for even the most experienced of players. The 18-hole course follows all the twists and turns of the River Wye, making for some interesting holes that blend into the geography of the Herefordshire countryside. The course runs for a total of 6036 yards and set across 148 acres of picturesque, rural land which it shares with a huge variety of wildlife including deer, mink and otters. With a dedicated social committee, the club also offers weekly events such as quizzes and specialist cuisine evenings in its luxurious clubhouse,

not to mention the legendary Sunday roast that attracts people from all over Herefordshire as well as neighbouring counties. The clubhouse can cater for a range of events on demand, and with unlimited photo opportunities it should be a serious contender to host any upcoming events you might have. Newcastle-under-Lyme is a small market town in the north of Staffordshire, easily accessible from many major cities. Its closest neighbour is Stoke-on-Trent, a city that bursts with life. Newcastle-under-Lyme Golf Club is a friendly and welcoming club, located only 10 minutes from Stoke. It provides a rare sense of separation from the pandemonium of modern life, and a sanctuary from its relentless sounds, sights and smells. Players are free to leave behind their nine to five to focus on the long undulating fairways, and to make firm friends with like-minded folk in the clubhouse. The north of Staffordshire is the birthplace of the UK’s internationally renowned ceramics industry and is therefore steeped in history from the industrial revolution. Now it’s quaint, but still bustling market towns represent all things quintessentially British. The area also boasts some of the best attractions the UK has to offer, including Water World and the legendary Alton Towers. This makes this part of the UK perfect for long weekends for the whole family.

The club was founded in 1908, and has been expanding and improving ever since. It is not surprising that the club was recently selected to host the Midlands Amateur Championships, to add to their long list of the County competitions they have hosted.

NULGC, is one of the many brilliant golf courses in the area, and is rapidly building a reputation as one of the finest in Staffordshire. With 18 holes, stretched over 6395 yards, this par 72 is not for the faint hearted, offering a challenge to players of all abilities without punishing those with a higher handicap. The course boasts long undulating fairways lined intimidatingly with oaks creating ancient corridors to direct your drive. Positioned equidistant from big cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield, it is easily accessible and would be ideal for travelling golf societies.

The clubhouse has two bars that overlook the final green, stocking a wide range of real ales and quality wines; ideal for celebrating a good score. The club prides itself on its competitively priced food & beverage menus whilst also ensuring exceptional quality and service that is renowned for its attention to detail and welcomes repeat business and recommendations. Banqueting can be offered for larger functions. There is a fully equipped Pro Shop that offers an excellent range of equipment and clothing that will fulfil your golfing needs.

The facilities on site are exceptional, including a fully equipped clubhouse that welcomes societies and corporate days of various sizes.

NULGC, quite rightly, has a well-earned reputation in Staffordshire and their hard work is starting to spread as golf societies keep booking their tours here, and visitors return again and again. This hidden gem in the north of the Midlands is not one to miss for anyone looking to test themselves in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

All areas of the course are clearly maintained to a high standard, which is credit to the hard working grounds team at NULGC. Those who live and play locally, praise the surfaces for their speed and consistency.

The food it serves attracts people from across the county, and combined with its atmosphere has people coming back again and again. The facilities are so good, you simply won’t want to leave, and luckily you won’t have to owing to the on-site 4 Star Bed & Breakfast, perfect for those wanting to make an early start on the course. The estate is currently benefiting from significant investment which includes an 18-hole strategic bunker re-development, a range of new tee boxes along with many other exciting course aesthetics. The investment does not just stop at the golf course, the beginning of 2017 saw the club owners issue a 5-year investment plan that includes upgrades to the club house, B&B facility and the continued development of the golf course. At the launch of the 5-year investment plan, Jon Connell (Managing Director) described his vision and what he hopes to achieve stating that once finished Badgemore Park will no doubt be an estate to be enjoyed and admired making it the ‘club of choice’ in the surrounding counties. Badgemore Park really does have something special, and would make the perfect setting for your next weekend away.
