A

recurring theme in many industries around the world is sustainability and this is being reflected in the pages of Marina Industry, which carried an article headed ‘Sustainability in the superyacht industry’ in its April issue. A news item on page 6 of this issue also covers the release MB92’s second sustainability report, assessing the options that could help the existing fleet of over 6,000 superyachts reduce its significant carbon footprint. We now learn that METSTRADE, the exhibition and networking event for B2B leisure marine equipment suppliers and buyers to be held at RAI Amsterdam from 15-17 November, is further building on its consistent efforts to promote best practice in sustainability across the sector. In addition to other initiatives, this year’s show will introduce a ‘Superyacht Sustainability Route’ in collaboration with the Water Revolution Foundation. Focused on the superyacht industry, this new initiative will indicate exhibitors on the METSTRADE 2022 show floor that have passed the Foundation’s rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Based in The Netherlands, the Foundation has been granted the status of a Public Benefit Organisation. It grew out of a small group of superyacht industry leaders, who shared a belief that the industry must

change course to better look after the planet and guarantee its future. One of the Foundation’s key activities is the creation of a Database of Sustainable Solutions, which will be launched later this year. Anyone seeking a listing in this online database submits to an LCA, which is conducted by the Foundation’s independent and specialised group of research institutes. If the submission is confirmed to be more sustainable than the business as usual, being better throughout its entire life cycle, then it will be promoted as such among key decision-makers. Verified solutions can enjoy a growing list of benefits, including a well-deserved spotlight when exhibiting at METSTRADE. The Superyacht Sustainability Route is anticipated to be of significant help to buyers attending the trade show as they are highly dependent on reliable third-party confirmation of environmental credentials to achieve the increasingly ambitious environmental objectives of their companies and the vessels that they build, refit and maintain. There’s no doubt that the search for sustainability will grow more intense and ultimately become the aim of all those involved in the economic viability and future success of the marine leisure trade. New sign-ups for Pick a Pier

uring the first quarter of 2022, Pick a Pier has signed up over 30 new marinas. The AI-driven platform was founded in 2017 by a team of passionate boating enthusiasts using technology solutions to connect boaters and marinas, Marinas from across Europe have joined Pick a Pier’s platform, including UK-based Emsworth Yacht Harbour. Other new signings include Blue Flag-certified Marina di San Lorenzo, the 830-berth Port de La Baule Le Pouliguen, Portugal’s Marina de Lagos, The Netherland’s Jachthaven Waterkant and Real Club Náutico Castellón in Spain, as well as many others across Europe. This Global accreditation is the highest accolade that the industry awards and is reserved for marinas that offer their customers a comprehensive unique marina experience by providing tailored, personalised service and an outstanding array of high-quality facilities and amenities. MIA releases marina industry report

T

he Marina Industry Association (MIA) has released its latest Health of the Australian Marina Industry Survey Report. Conducted every two years since 2011, the survey continues to provide a comprehensive, comparable and evolving perspective on the economic, social and environmental performance, and contributions of Australian marinas. The survey is largely funded by maritime planning and design experts, International Marina Consultants. Conducted in late 2021, the findings are based on a sample of over 46% of Australia’s 290 club and commercial marinas, and given the high response rate and consistency of the survey instrument and its respondents, the resultant data is considered valid and reliable. Researcher and report author, Dr Ed Mahoney of Michigan State

University, noted, “The response rate again demonstrates the industry’s acute interest in having access to scientifically-collected data that allows for identification of trends and assessment of the financial performance and economic contribution of this important industry”. The resilience and strength were evident when key data was presented to over 320 industry professionals by MIA President, Andrew Chapman at the Marinas22 International Conference and Trade Exhibition on the Gold Coast. The performance highlights from the 2020-21 data indicate industry turnover exceeding $730 million, direct employment of over 3,300 people, government tax and lease payments of $95 million, along with capital investments of over $183 million. Furthermore, the industry engaged nearly 8,700 independent

contractors and provided tenancy to over 1,900 businesses. Chapman explained, “The findings indicate inadequacy of supply in many locations around the country. It shows that strong occupancy rates and waiting lists have continued to grow over the last decade despite an increase in storage spaces. This bodes well for the future of our industry as it indicates further opportunity, particularly given the increasing pipeline of new vessels on order from manufacturers – they are all going to need somewhere to store their boats”. The report breaks performance down by state along with marina size and type (club, non-club marinas). The varying services provided by marinas, including food and beverage, fuel and commercial tenancy are reported on, and

Coastal clean-ups by D-Marin On 20 June, D-Marin, a sociallyresponsible operator of premium yacht marinas, pledged its commitment to organise beach clean-ups near its marinas in Croatia, Greece and Turkey. Areti Priovolou, Health, Safety and Environment Officer at D-Marin, said: “Care for the environment is both a passion and MARINA INDUSTRY • JUNE 2022

principle of ours at D-Marin and we have robust environmental and social responsibility policies in place. We have pledged to devote efforts to protect the landscape and wildlife surrounding our marinas and the beach cleanups are a great example of our commitments in action. There is nothing more likely to inspire

change than to see in person the vast quantities of rubbish collected from our coastlines. “We can all play our part to ensure we have cleaner, healthier beaches and oceans for everyone to enjoy, and we encourage our employees, local community, other businesses and environmental groups to join us and support our efforts.”

D-Marin’s beach clean-ups have already begun in earnest at some of its marinas, with some 14 cubic metres of rubbish removed from the sea by a team at its Mandalina marina in Croatia. Others are set to take place over the coming weeks. Teams made up of local volunteers, D-Marin staff and, in some cases, representatives from local environmental protection associations have helped collect kilos of waste from nearby beaches and seabeds, with even more set to be cleared. Beach clean-ups are an effective way to reduce the amount of pollution that reaches the oceans where it can cause harm to wildlife. They unite communities by providing a shared goal to tackle an issue that impacts everyone. They raise awareness and galvanise people to make sustainable choices in their everyday lives to reduce the amount of waste they produce, recycle wherever possible and help prevent pollution building up in the first place.

M

arine sanitation specialist LeeSan has just completed the installation of a new pump-out system on the fuel pontoon next to the lock at Premier Marinas’ Chichester Marina. The original LeeSan pump-out system, which this unit replaces, was a diaphragm pump controlled from a stainless operating panel. It was installed 20 years ago in 2002 and has been extremely reliable over its long working life. However, to ensure that the marina’s service is fully up-todate, the old unit has now been removed and replaced with a new, updated, LS60W Pump-Out Station. Internally, this features

Report calls for sustainable superyachts

M

B92, the world-leading superyacht refit, repair and maintenance group, has released its second sustainability report, assessing the options that could help the existing fleet of over 6,000 superyachts reduce its significant carbon footprint. While superyacht builders and designers have been searching for solutions that can take the sector towards a zero-emissions future, there has been less focus on futureproofing the existing fleet until very recently. Nevertheless, there are many actions that yacht-owners can undertake that can have an immediate impact in reducing their environmental impact. In preparation for this second report, ‘Technology and the Oceans’, MB92 consulted key stakeholders

from the industry for a broad discussion on current and future innovations that might help the industry improve its ecological footprint and how these necessary upgrades can be made an attractive proposition for owners. The report highlights the most likely alternatives to diesel as a fuel, how a more holistic approach is required instead of holding out for a silver bullet and the role of regulations in driving change within the industry. “We have to be able to solve this situation now,” said Pepe GarcíaAubert, Chairman of the MB92 Group. “If we don’t, we are endangering not only the future of our industry, but the world as we know it today.” Rob Papworth, Operations Director at MB92 La Ciotat and moderator of the panel discussions, added:

“A strategic alliance of the key decision-makers in our industry must take a collective responsibility to drive our industry forward. In this time of doubt, we must use our strengths as innovators and perfectionists to show that with a shared passion we can drastically lessen our impact on the environment and our oceans. After all, our livelihoods depend on it”. MB92 is committed to assuming a leading role in helping yachts become more sustainable. Its shipyards are among a handful in the world that are actively investing in providing a more sustainable refit process from 100% green-supplied onshore power, comprehensive waste management, particle filtration systems and data collection systems to accurately monitor progress.

Larnaca Marina inaugurated Nicos Anastasiades, President of Cyprus, who has held the post since 2013, recently inaugurated Larnaco’s marina and port project, which he declared represented a historic milestone for the country. Work on the site began in early April and, with a budget of 1.2 billion Euros, will be the largest-ever infrastructure investment on the island. The Israeli-Cypriot consortium, which won the Larnaca Marina tender in 2020, aims to create a 600-berth marina for vessels up to 115 metres in length. The first phase of the project will take around five years to complete.

ICOMIA launches Asia Working group The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has announced the new ICOMIA Asia Working Group (IAWG). A key aim for the new group is to ‘achieve traction on common issues relating to regional co-operation, such as border agreements and customs, immigration, and quarantine procedures (CIQP)’. Previous efforts to unite national boating associations in the region include the Asia Boating Dialogue, which was last held in 2020 as a two-part webinar series and led by the Singapore Boating Industry Association (SBIA) and Hong Kong Boating Industry Association (HKBIA), with the support of ICOMIA. The mission of the IAWG includes providing international leadership and guidance on issues concerning the development of the leisure marine industry through discussion, research and networking. Lawrence Chow, Chair of ICOMIA Asia Working Group, said: “The formation of the IAWG marks the MARINA INDUSTRY • JUNE 2022

Asia. In parallel, the IAWG would be an ideal platform to spread the experience gathered from the various ICOMIA committees to

Refurbishment at UK’s busiest lifeboat station

A

major refurbishment project on the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) busiest station was completed earlier this year by Walcon Marine. Located on the North side of the River Thames in central London, RNLI Tower not only handles over 500 call-outs each year, it is also one of the RNLI’s few stations that are afloat. As such, it has to contend with a tidal range of six metres and the challenges that come with being on what is by far the UK’s busiest inland waterway. The works undertaken by Walcon involved the fabrication and installation of two 20 metre aluminium bridges plus a ramp for disabled access that together connect the platform to the Embankment towpath behind. The ramp was a bespoke project

involving detailed design plus high precision manufacture to ensure fast and smooth passages for injured persons being taken ashore on wheeled stretchers en route to hospital. The full scope of the project

required the replacement of a single steel bridge, which had reached the end of its life. However, as there are two landing recesses built into the embankment wall, it was decided that two aluminium bridges should be installed to give

redundancy in the event of one or the other requiring maintenance. The upstream bridge was fitted first into the vacant opening. The original bridge was then removed and the new downstream bridge installed in its place. The on site assembly and installation works, overseen by infrastructure specialist Herbosch Kiere NV, took four weeks to complete, with the station fully operational throughout. The entire project was a major logistical challenge as the new structures were delivered by road to Tilbury and then taken up the Thames by crane barge to the site in the heart of London, where the old bridge was lifted out and new ones lowered into position. (harbour) recently completed an ambitious improvement project with the addition of 240 metres of state-of-the-art SF Marina floating concrete docks. The expansion accommodates over

40 vessels and provides wavedampening protection to the marina. SF Marina floating concrete docks are virtually unsinkable. Thick-walled and steel-reinforced, they regularly overcome violent weather, so the occasional bump from a berth-holder’s craft offers little chance of damaging them. The individual pontoons at Roskilde Havn are connected via an advanced energy-absorbing coupling system and are secured to the seabed with 27 metre long x 50 cm wide external piles. Installed by SF Pontona ApS of Denmark, the Roskilde Havn layout includes a 105 metre long x 3 metre wide angled dock and walkway comprising six SF1024 pontoons that add 12 berths. This terminates at the centre of a straight 135 metre long x 6

metre wide dock section of seven SF1040 pontoons, with space for an additional 30 boats. All finger piers are ten metres in length to serve a wide range of vessel lengths. The fjord-side of the large portion can accommodate larger vessels parallel to the dock. Connected to an older portion of the marina is a new angled 30 metre long x 2 metre wide segment that dampens incoming wave action. Founded in 1972, Roskilde Havn provides 310 on-water berths and a marine service facility. It hosts sailing and rowing clubs, and a Viking ship museum. arine products from Dura Composites, including d2 Dura Grating Mini Mesh, d2 Dura Platform 40 and d2 Dura Profile beams, have been installed at Noss-onDart Marina, during its £75 million redevelopment. Updates to the marina, which is situated within an ‘Area of Outstanding National Beauty’ in South Devon, also include new boatyard facilities, the highlight of which is a closed loop boat washdown water recycling system. The decking manufacturer was chosen by Premier Marinas, which owns Noss-on-Dart Marina, to work with its engineering company to produce a composite floor structure around the facility’s boat hoist supported by large 305 mm GRP Dura Profile beams between 6-10 metres in length. The team chose

the GRP material over steel due to its strength to weight ratio and superior performance in corrosive salt-water environments. Dura Profiles exceed the higher performance E23 grade requirement of the BS EN 13706 standard. The company carried out a full FEA study and CAD service to enable the fabrication and supply of materials to Teignmouth Maritime Services ready for installation. The lightweight nature of the GRP profiles versus steel meant that installation was much quicker and more efficient. Also central to the effective operation of the washdown and hoist are d2 Dura Grating and Dura Platform 40 flooring made from moulded and pultruded highperformance GRP panels, whose design is unique to Dura. The open

mesh section utilises 55 mm d2 Dura Grating Mini Mesh in dark grey, which facilitates drainage whilst maintaining strength and unrivalled anti-slip properties. The solid surface sections were created

Abu Dhabi shipyard chooses Marine Travelift

T

he recent delivery of a Marine Travelift 200CII mobile boat hoist to MBK Marine Industries in Abu Dhabi, UAE, is an integral part of a large shipyard development project by the company, which is wholly-owned by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The new yard has been developed to fulfill his vision to have a commercially viable, quality and safetycontrolled ‘one-stop-shop’ for marine, oil and gas works. The company’s year-long project began in mid-2021 and will be completed within the next few weeks. The scope of this project is broad, including the development of an 87,000 square metre site, with a 2,000 metric ton capacity floating dry dock, a 150 metre long jetty, a bay for operating the 200,000 kg capacity boat hoist, as well as workshops and storage facilities. Services to be provided by the shipyard will include the building of commercial vessels, the repair, maintenance and modification of ships, the construction of drilling platforms,

and onshore and offshore oil and gas fields and facilities services. The installation of the Marine Travelift 200CII boat hoist will allow MBK to have timely and cost-effective docking and

undocking operations. Very few modifications were necessary to the hoist as no infrastructure was in place before it was purchased, so there were no limiting factors for either width or height, allowing MBK to haul a variety of vessels with ease. “Marine Travelift completed the erection and commissioning ahead of schedule,” commented a representative of MBK, adding “and the delivery and set-up process was excellent”. The company also noted that good training was provided by Marine Travelift technicians regarding operation and maintenance. Every boat hoist set-up includes an on-site, factorytrained technician from within its extensive global dealer and service network. First Aqua superPower charging hub in Spain

O

n 12 May, the first Aqua superPower marine fast charger in Spain was inaugurated at MDL’s Sant Carles Marina as part of its commitment to sustainable and zero emissions practices. Aqua’s marine fast charger was formally switched on in the presence of the Secretary of Territory and Mobility and President of Ports de la Generalitat, the Mayor of La Ràpita, the Managing Director of the Ports de la Generalitat, the General Manager of Sant Carles Marina and various dignitaries and stakeholders. As the first marina in Spain to install Tesla electric car chargers, Sant Carles Marina is one of the most progressive facilities in Catalonia. It lies at the mouth of the River Ebro, opposite the town of La Ràpita and at one end of

the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre. The port is adjacent to La Ràpita port within the Alfacs Bay offering 1,150 moorings for boats from 8-33 metres. “Given the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, marinas, ports and harbours are looking to incorporate sustainable technologies and practices into their operations to reduce pollution and mitigate their environmental impact,” explained Nicolás González, General Manager of Sant Carles Marina. Isidre Gavin, President of Ports de la Generalitat, confirmed: “The installation of the new Aqua superPower fast charger is part of the Catalan Government’s strategic line for decarbonisation and adds to the adaptation of ports to climate change as part of one of the main pillars of the Horizon 2030 Ports Plan”.

The ins and outs of power washing By Dan Natchez*

F

or most full and partial service facilities, and increasingly at many boat ramps, cleaning the hulls of boats is a normal and necessary activity to remove dirt and marine/aquatic growth, whether that growth is simply unwanted or potentially harbouring an invasive species like zebra or quagga mussels. These days, the cleaning often involves some form of power/ pressure washing (we’ll stick with ‘power’ here), with or without some form of detergent or biocide mixed in. During the washing, we often also end up removing some oil and grease or other chemicals as part of the dirt and loose paint. We also use power washing to intentionally remove bottom paints. We have all seen a boat that is being power-washed after being

hauled at the end of the season and the power wash water turns the colour of the hull’s bottom paint. I recall years ago a marina manager jokingly telling me that he only allowed boats with blue and green hulls to be hauled at his facility, so he could help turn the harbour waters back to a nice blue-green colour! In fact, in the not-too-distant past, and to various extents still today (particularly depending on what part of the country/world you live in), most of us didn’t give too much thought as to where the water from this kind of boat washing was going. That began to change as the attention of the regulatory world started heading from the big smoking gun types of water pollution to ‘non-point source’ and ‘storm water associated with industrial activities’.

Suddenly, marina operations were industrial activities, even if most of us had a hard time thinking of this often-romanticised pursuit in this way. I also recall an off-the-record conversation with the head of an unnamed North-Eastern state’s environmental protection agency, where, as we were discussing storm water runoff, I asked: “Well, what about the power washing water?” He replied, “Don’t ask that question. We don’t really have a good way to permit it and you won’t like the answer I’ll have to give you”. All these years later, most places, at least in the US, still don’t have a good way to permit it, but it is officially recognised as ‘process water’ (ie, industrial process wastewater) and something that cannot be discharged either to surface or ground waters

without a permit. Keep in mind that any water associated with wet sanding is also considered process water and similarly regulated. Like many regulations, those covering process water are subject to various degrees of enforcement, which seems to go in cycles, and interpretation as to what is in compliance (with either or both the letter of the laws or the interpretation of the laws). What was considered compliant years ago might not be considered compliant any longer! In most cases in the US, the ‘bad’ (or at least not preferred) way to permit these types of discharges would be to get a facility specific individual industrial discharge permit, which most facilities consider far too burdensome an approach (and regulators most often agree). So,

It also needs to incorporate a slope. what does a marina operator or boatyard owner do? There are many options a facility can take, ranging from relatively inexpensive to very expensive. What makes the most sense for your facility will depend greatly on your specific operations, as well as the associated regulatory and physical environments. ● Do nothing. There are definitely facilities that have yet to really tackle the problem and in many places enforcement has been somewhat lacking. However, when an agency decides to conduct on-site inspections, the opening notice of

fines can be equal to or higher than the cost of compliance. In most cases, it is also in the facility’s best interest to minimise its potential negative impact on water quality and the environment. ● Only conducting power washing in an area where one has covered the ground with filter fabric and/or surrounded the area with hay bales, thereby allowing the collection of the biggest debris and allowing the water to flow directly into the ground or over the surface to the water. Years ago, this was sometimes considered enough and while better than nothing, in most cases would

be hard to justify as compliant – not that the use of filter fabrics can’t be part of a system or overall approach. Such largely untreated discharges can also lead to potential ground contamination issues. ● Most of the other options will all entail having a wash pad of one form or another and involve preventing any discharge of process water, thereby eliminating the need for a discharge permit.

Different approaches These include collecting the wash water from your pad, with or without some basic filtering, and

directing it to a holding tank that will be pumped out by a certified haulier and properly disposed of. For facilities that do not do much power washing, this can be a solution, but for facilities with any kind of volume it may prove impractical, not cost-effective and too expensive. Another approach is pre-treating wash water and directing it into a sanitary sewer system – sometimes referred to as an ‘open loop’ system. This can be an attractive set-up, particularly where a municipal or similar sewage treatment plant is at the end of that sanitary

There is normally a requirement to obtain permission for the discharge and the pretreatment requirements of the sewage treatment plant owner can vary tremendously. These can range from simply having some basic filters (down to a reasonable micron level) and a settling tank of some sort to the more advanced treatment methods that would be used in almost any closed loop/ recycling system, although even in the latter case the overall level of treatment required is typically less than for a recycling system since the treatment is finished at the sewage treatment plant. Some plant-owners require some level of periodic testing of the water you are sending their way, some do not. There is also the risk that the plant-owner will change his mind at some point and either disallow the connection or increase the pretreatment requirements. A third option is a closed loop/ recycling system. While this approach can be similar to the ‘open loop’ system, it most usually requires a higher level of treatment, so as to sufficiently finish the water for further pressure washing use. Similar to the ‘open loop’ system there will be filtration down to specified micron levels. Depending on the intensity of use and the particular climate, these systems will often include continuous movement of the water within the MARINA INDUSTRY • JUNE 2022

loop to prevent stagnation and/ or the addition of an ultra-violet or bromide system to prevent bacterial growth in the water and foul odours. Some systems use flocculation additives (to encapsulate foreign materials). In most cases, and where they can be afforded, recycling systems are considered the preferred and ‘greenest’ means for dealing with power washing process water, particularly in places where fresh water is in scant supply or expensive to obtain. There are many variations on a theme for the above-described approaches and the cost can range from relatively little to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The latter is usually for very intense activities and a highly customised system. The actual treatment processes

What makes the most sense for your facility will depend greatly on your specific operations, as well as the associated regulatory and physical environments. vary considerably, ranging from electro-coagulation to ceramic media, carbon filters, cyclonic separators, etc, and a host of mechanical filters. Each system can

have its strengths and weaknesses. When talking with vendors make sure they understand your needs and whether you are in a salt or fresh water environment. Ain addition, obtain clear answers as to how you will be able to dispose of collected solid wastes, used filters, etc. There are quite a few suppliers out there these days, though most are geared towards the carwash, trucking, heavy industry and/or military markets, which tend to be on the pricier end, and relatively few that are focused on marinas (not that this means they can’t supply a marina). Each company has its particular focus with pluses and minuses. Two US suppliers that are particularly marina-focused are EMP Industries (makers of the AquaClean system) and The Next Generation in Waste Water


NATCHEZ ON THE WATERFRONT 15 Treatment Technology. There are several companies overseas that also cater to the marina industry.

Hard surface Fundamental to any treatment system is having the means to collect the water. In most cases, it is strongly recommended that the power washing be undertaken on a hard surface that is sloped to a catch basin where a sump pump can be placed to transfer the water to a tank or whatever treatment system is employed. For a new facility or one that is already renovating their mobile boat hoist operation or launching ramp, that is a relatively simple approach to undertake. However, it can be very expensive to redo or retrofit an existing hard surface pad. Not only does it have to be reinforced to withstand the weight of the mobile hoist and boats that are being hauled or launched, but it also needs to incorporate a slope, so that water is directed towards the catch basin. In all cases, there should also be an approach to separate the process water from storm water when the process water is not being created and, in an ideal world, minimising the amount of storm water that runs on to or across the pad from other areas. For facilities where creating these types of fixed pads is not possible, whether financially or practically, there are now special washdown racks and tarp-like pads available to create a contained system that is on/above ground. One supplier of such systems is Hydro Engineering Inc in Utah. While its focus for recreational boating has been on boat decontamination to prevent the spread of invasive species, it also provides washdown and treatment systems for an extensive range of applications.

Grant assistance For decades we have been advocating that grant money be made available to facilities to help provide a greater incentive to undertake such upgrades. We all need and want clean water or there will be no recreational boating industry and some states have provided limited, small grants to help provide incentives. In the US,

the Clean Vessel Act, administered through the US Fish and Wildlife Service, provides incentive grant monies for pump-outs. This program has been in effect for many years and has been extremely effective in not only creating a network of pump-outs throughout the country, but also stimulating upgrades and improved operations. It has been so successful that many states are unable to spend all of their allocations. Many, including my own consultancy, have been advocating for the broadening of the program to cover process water initiatives. The cost of constructing a suitable washdown pad and meaningful system to handle the process water can typically range from approximately $50,000 to $100,000 depending upon the location and various regulations. If one moves into customised systems or needing to meet extremely minute standards – the costs can skyrocket. Regardless, compliance is not an insignificant cost to marinas, particularly when one considers that it is estimated that over 70% of the 10,000 to 12,000 marinas in the US have less than 100 boats, with most being less than 50 boats. We again urge the various marine associations (local, state and national), to renew their efforts to make this a major priority and we are willing to help. We recognise that there are always numerous demands for how monies, and particularly incentive grant monies, are to be spent and what programs end up being funded, but if one really wants to make major inroads in helping marinas improve water quality, one of the most significant cost/benefit results would be to fund incentives for the treatment of process water.

Marina de Cascais, Portugal

C

ascais, which has been described as one of the most beautiful villages in the world, is home to Marina de Cascais, which is the largest marina on the Portuguese Riviera and the third largest in the country. Located between Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent, and Cabo Espichel, the marina was officially opened in August, 1999, and now provides 650 berths for boats of up to 36 metres, with hard standing available to store boats on shore. Since then it has expanded its facilities, which are open to local residents, as well as sailors and tourists. It now provides a safe haven overlooked by the Santa Marta lighthouse for those who wish to enjoy its sophisticated range of high-end restaurants, bars and boutiques.

In fact, the marina offers the organisers of sailing events and commercial promotions such as fashion shows an area of 20,000 sq m of open, multi-use spaces, which are extremely accessible. It hosted the ISAF Sailing World Championship in 2007 and the America’s Cup World Series in 2011. There is a heliport on the East side of the marina and the facility is within easy reach of international airports – Humberto Delgardo Airport serving the capital city Lisbon is just 35 km away and Cascais only 14 km. Marina de Cascais reserves 125 berths for the use of visiting yachts and there is a quay in the protected outer basin exclusively reserved for super and megayachts measuring over 36 metres. Electricity and water is supplied to each berth and wi-fi is available throughout the marina.

A fuel dock is situated alongside the reception centre and a technical area includes workshops and both a mobile boat hoist and a 70 tonne crane to remove craft from the water for repair or maintenance.

a unique patented installation technology that allows for inwater connection and removal, as well as installation in hull areas usually inaccessible. Underwater light with thru-hull stem fitting

F

ormidable performance, with the added security of a thruhull stem fitting, is provided by Bluefin LED’s Manta Ray MR20 underwater light, which is suitable for

transom mounting on all types of hull. In a radical departure from conventional sealing methods, the Manta Ray has a unique rear cassette design with multiple

sealing system. Machined from Billet AB2 marine grade bronze, it features built-in driver technology with active thermal rollback and has received Type approval from the Registro Italiano Navale (RINA). The lens is made from 8mm thick, optical grade borosilicate glass, with a 65 degree beam angle. Recommended for boats of up to 40 metres, it requires a 24 volt supply and has a power draw of 5.1

amps. Life expectancy of the LED unit is in excess of 50,000 hours. Manta Ray units have a profile of 32 mm, a diameter of 140 mm and a length of 208.5 mm. They weigh 2.7 kg. Industry professionals converge on first post-Brexit Seawork The 23rd edition of Seawork was the first Seawork in over 1100 days, the first post-Brexit and the first real large scale post-Covid19 networking opportunity. Even in the face of a UK wide rail strike, 6,485 industry professionals showed their determination to converge on Mayflower Park in Southampton. There was certainly a lot to talk about and it provided a great opportunity for commercial marine industry colleagues to learn from each other. Seawork was again fortunate to be supported by the key associations and organisations, this year focussing on how the multi-faceted commercial marine industry is adapting and innovating in the face of current economic, environmental and political upheavals. There were some fabulous, innovative vessels on the pontoons, together with new

items of equipment and services on the quayside and in the exhibition halls. Commercial Maritime is leading the way in design and innovation, addressing decarbonisation head on with newly-launched vessels. Also worthy of mention were BARTech 30, Seacat Columbia, representing a unique, game-changing evolution

in green vessel design and 35 metre catamaran, MHO Asgard, designed by CEO Mik Henriksen, setting new standards with its advanced hybrid-electric solution from Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron. Overall winner of the Innovations Showcase, Artemis Technologies eFoiler® system, is based on the integration of a high-power density

electric drivetrain into the flightcontrolled hydrofoils, resulting in an energy-efficient workboat solution, which provides up to 90% fuel savings compared to modern high-speed displacement vessels. Danish company Dacoma demonstrated its novel Airkeel stabiliser, turning smaller workboats and crew vessels into rock-stable safe working platforms with equipmentcarrying capabilities. German outboard manufacturer Neander Motors announced a new partnership with Berthon Power division and Italian manufacturer Heila Marine Cranes confirmed an exclusive distributorship agreement with the Brimmond Group. Multiple sales at South Coast Boat Show

ith multiple yacht and powerboat sales and over 5,000 people pre-registering for tickets, the South Coast Boat Show, which ended on 8 May, has delighted exhibitors, with many already signed up for next year’s event. While enjoying pleasant, sunny weather, potential buyers and boating enthusiasts were able to compare and contrast over 70 global power and sail brands on the water in the stunning surroundings of MDL’s Ocean Village Marina in the

heart of Southampton. Richard Marsden, UK Sales Manager at show sponsor Raymarine, said: “The 2022 South Coast Boat Show not only bought us fantastic weather, but lots of enthusiastic boaters. It was great to talk about our new products and help with technical questions. The marina was full of RIBs, sail and power boats flying their flags. he latest edition of the Palma International Boat Show was visited by more than 32,000 people, a 50% increase over the 2021 show. For four days, the event saw a large influx of professionals and nautical enthusiasts, who praised the quality of the products on display and the new lines presented. The event is organised by the Institute for Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands (IDI), an entity dependent on the Vice-Presidency and Regional Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, and the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA). Following an assessment of the results of this show, the organisers stated that “The event has not

only been a great success in terms of exhibitor participation, with 276 companies, but it has also performed very well in terms of sales and promotion of the sector, as reflected in public attendance figures, which are equal to those of 2019, when the show ran for an extra day”. It is worth noting that 87% of the exhibitors surveyed stated that they would like to participate in the Palma International Boat Show in 2023, a fact that reflects the satisfactory participation of companies and the fact that the show is a commercially profitable event for the marine trade. Furthermore, 76% of the participants rated the organisation of the show highly, with 86% being satisfied with the experience of

taking part. The latest edition of the show had six more participating companies than in 2019 and 49 more than the previous year, representing an increase of 21% compared to 2021. In addition, a total of 264 boats were exhibited at sea. Leisure boating is regarded as a strategic sector for the economy of the Baleares by the Government of the islands since it comprises some 650 companies generating more than 4,500 direct jobs and is worth around 840 million Euros a year.
