EDITOR’S COMMENT

The European and global associations of the recreational boating industry have joined the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as affiliate members. Nautical tourism will now be at the core of the biggest international tourism organisation, further increasing opportunities for promoting the benefits of the sector to governments and encouraging the adoption of policies that will support the sustainable growth of leisure sailing in the future.

UNWTO is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Based in Spain, it has 159 member states and over 500 affiliate members. UNWTO promotes tourism as a driver of economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability and offers leadership and support to the sector in advancing knowledge and tourism policies worldwide.

At the 118th session of the UNWTO Executive Council in mid-May, European Boating Industry (EBI) and the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) were accepted as affiliate members, becoming important partners of UNWTO. This position will catapult the nautical tourism sector into the spotlight of tourism organisations at global level.

The common aim of both associations is to

promote nautical tourism as a major tourism option that offers growth opportunities for communities and regions, supports the introduction of sustainable solutions to protect the marine environment and makes the entire tourism industry fit for the future. This membership will support the industry through valuable opportunities for learning, sharing information and establishing valuable new partnerships.

The two associations will share the membership, with EBI leading on issues for the European region and ICOMIA on other global regions. The official membership is held by EBI, but it will be shared based on the long-term partnership agreement and excellent collaboration between both associations.

ICOMIA has also just concluded its Annual Congress in partnership with the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO). Held in Sanremo, Italy, it was a chance for member associations to discuss important issues in the recreational boating industry, with a variety of committees, workshops and meetings taking place.

At the Association’s AGM held during the event, a number of changes to the constitution were announced, including the development of a Board of Directors.

‘Dramatic’ change in wave climate at Haslar Marina

Berth-holders and visitors to boatfolk’s Haslar Marina in Gosport can be certain of a good night’s sleep now Inland and Coastal Marina Systems (ICMS) has completed the installation of a 70 m wave attenuating breakwater at the Eastern end of the marina.

As part of a two-phase project to expand berthing at this popular South Coast marina, ICMS has used its expertise in pontoon design and manufacture to create a bespoke floating concrete breakwater to reduce the wave climate in a particularly exposed section of the marina.

“We’re delighted with the work that Inland and Coastal has done, completing the final piece of our overall marina extension work,” said Ben Lippiett, Marina General Manager.

“One of the unique selling points of our marina is its position close to Portsmouth Harbour entrance, but this has meant that there has always been a bit of motion at this exposed end of the marina, which has

previously made it difficult to fill the berths.

“What our new floating concrete breakwater has done is to create a wave screen affect and has given us greater protection from the action of the wind and waves.”

Haslar Marina’s new floating concrete breakwater comprises two 60 tonne 20 m x 4 m and two 53 tonne 15 m x 4 m concrete breakwater units.

Manufactured in-house, ICMS’ floating concrete breakwaters are an option where a fixed breakwater isn’t feasible and are designed to attenuate waves to a level where sheltered berthing can then be provided.

Built from reinforced concrete with internal floating blocks, the breakwaters incorporate high yield stainless steel wire rope and IRHD 70 rubber buffers combining high strength and maximum flexibility.

Given the severe environments in which they function, ICMS pays particular attention to the lifespan of the units. Built in accordance with exposure classifications, coupled with a detailed analysis of the site, the galvanised reinforcing steel and concrete cover ensure the longevity of these breakwater units.

GRP decking for Great Haywood Marina

This latest project by Dura Composites marks over 10,000 sq m of the company’s Mini Mesh Grating successfully designed, supplied and installed in its long-standing collaboration with Lakeland Leisure Estates.

Great Haywood Marina is owned and managed by Lakeland Leisure and was in need of an upgrade in Autumn, 2022. Degrading to the timber decks had occurred and they were in need of a much longer-lasting replacement. Having previously worked together on many projects, the client knew that Dura Composites’ GRP Mini Mesh was the ideal solution offering non-corrosion, non-conductive and anti-slip properties that far surpassed the failing timber.

Particularly appealing for Great Haywood was the non-conductive element of Dura Composites’ GRP grating as each of their moorings comes with a 16 amp electricity supply. Boat owners can feel even safer knowing their jetty covering cannot pass electricity through it.

Waiting pontoon improves safety at Marina Palamós

Marina Palamós, which has 902 moorings on the Costa Brava, Spain, now features a new waiting pontoon in the entrance channel to the main harbour. This new floating auxiliary structure serves as a temporary mooring point for boats measuring up to 10 m in length during periods when they are waiting for availability in the marina or at the fuel pump.

The management of the marina designed this solution to improve safety in the Summer months when there is heavy traffic entering or leaving the marina coinciding with boats waiting to refuel that previously had to circle in the main channel. The solution is designed to be dismantled and removed to storage in Winter.

Trial of smart marina technology

Apartnership between MDL Marinas and innovative marine digitalisation firm Falco and its marina management software provider, Havenstar, has enabled MDL to trial smart marina technology at its Queen Anne’s Battery marina. As part of its digital transformation, MDL is running a pilot programme using Falco’s Smart Marina wireless technology to detect occupancy in real time on the visitor pontoon at its Plymouth-based marina.

Three-year marina rebuild in Sweden

Since 1979, Önnereds Båtlag (Önnereds Boat Club) has been a coastal refuge for city-dwelling boat-owners in nearby Gothenburg, Sweden. The club recently finished an ambitious three-year renovation to its large 435 m pontoon layout with the help of SF Marina.

SF Pontona Sweden, a fully owned subsidiary of SF Marina, sold and installed the four floating concrete pontoons used in the marina. While the North Sea waters around Önnereds Båtlag, on the South-West Coast, have nominal tidal fluctuations and are naturally protected from storms, the docks are virtually unsinkable, with exceptional stability. They’re moored with chains and concrete anchors. Utilities such as power and water are routed through internal ducts in the pontoons and terminate in El-Björn Alfa-II pedestals. The docks utilise 210 galvanised steel Y-finger booms of various lengths between 4.5 m and 10 m. Their narrow width allows for a greater number of boats to dock in a given space when compared to traditional aluminum or concrete fingers. Over 70% of recreational boats in Sweden are under six metres long, so by choosing this option Önnereds Båtlag was able to maximise its capacity to 285 slips.

With Y-boom fingers, boat-owners access their vessels from the bow or stern because the booms themselves are too narrow for safe passage. On Önnereds Båtlag’s outer dock, walkable versions provide a more customary approach. Both versions have large plastic floats on the end to keep them in place.

Less than nine miles from Gothenburg, Önnereds Båtlag offers dock space for boats up to 11 m with 3.75 m beams. Open from MidApril until the end of October, the naturalised venue offers a clubhouse, 26 boatsheds and provision for Winter storage.

As part of the trial to connect the marina office, staff and boaters digitally, a small wireless sensor has been installed on each of the visitor berths at Queen Anne’s Battery marina to detect boat movements. Via the Falco data gathering interface, this occupancy information will be sent to the Havenstar marina management system so the marina team is fully aware of berth availability and can allocate visitor berthing accordingly. The interconnection between Falco’s smart marina solution

with MDL’s marina management software also enables a request to be sent to a berth-holder asking them to identify how long they will be away for once they’ve departed from their berth, further enhancing the efficiency of marina space for visiting yachts and motorboats, and ensuring the berth is clear again when they return.

With the trial now underway, MDL’s Queen Anne’s Battery Marina is the first marina in the UK to trial Falco’s wireless data gathering solution. Over 2,000 have been deployed across marinas in France with encouraging results.

Principally known for its design, construction and installation of marinas, Walcon Marine has taken part in an important conservation project in the Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) Chichester Harbour. The project required the services of the Walcon Wizard and Walcon Warrior barges, which normally deliver and assist in the installation of the company’s pontoons, bridges and other equipment, as well as piling.

The project involved transporting 500 tonnes of shingle to Stakes Island, a man-made ridge of mud and shingle located South of the Chidham Peninsula in Chichester Harbour. It has become a breeding site for a range of sea birds and the shingle is enough to raise it to one metre above the current high water level and so help boost tern breeding by creating a more favourable habitat. The project was undertaken as part of the ‘Return of the Tern’ project, a partnership nature recovery initiative undertaken by the Friends of Chichester Harbour and Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

Exceptional NPS results for D-Marin facilities

D-Marin, a premium selection of marinas, has commended four of its marinas across Greece, Turkey and Croatia for their Net Promoter Scores (NPS), a measure to gauge customer loyalty and satisfaction, at its annual NPS awards.

Mandalina Marina in Sibenik, Croatia, Lefkas Marina in Lefkas, Greece, Turgutreis Marina near Bodrum, Turkey, and Zea Marina in Piraeus, Greece, have all been recognised as leading examples of premier customer satisfaction across the D-Marin Group.

‘Best NPS Greece’ was awarded to Lefkas Marina, the D-Marin flagship Turguteris Marina won ‘Best NPS Turkiye’, whilst Mandalina Marina was awarded ‘Best NPS Croatia’ and ‘Best Transient NPS’, in recognition of the marina’s service towards short-stay customers. Athens-based Zea Marina was the overall winner of the ‘Best NPS Score’.

Boost for marine leisure in UAE

At the Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) on 2 March, a significant event took place as Abeer Al Shaali, the Chairperson of the Leisure Marine Association (MENA), and Captain Abdullah Alhayyas, the Director of the Maritime Transport Affairs Department at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, signed an MoU to form a partnership that will accelerate the growth of the marine leisure industry in the UAE.

The ceremony was attended by H.E. Hessa Al Malek, Executive Director of the Maritime Sector at the Federal Transportation Authority for Land and Maritime, and the Board of Directors of the MENA. Their presence was a testament to the significance of the event and the importance of the collaboration between the government and private sectors.

Exciting new restaurant opens at Torquay Marina

Berth-holders, visitors and tenants at MDL’s Torquay Marina can now eat, drink and unwind at Otto, the marina’s new on-site bar and restaurant.

This exciting new eatery, with a distinct Mediterranean feel, is located at Unit 8 on Vaughan Road in the marina, with its location inspiring its name – Otto means eight in Italian.

Project boosts transition to marine charging in UK

Marine fast charge network operator Aqua superPower is leading a consortium, which has secured £3.2 million UK government funding to deliver critical marine charging infrastructure. Ten sites along the South Coast are being plugged into the UK’s clean maritime revolution as part of a collaborative and Governmentfunded initiative.

The Electric Seaway project will create the infrastructure necessary to power the region’s ever-growing fleet of electric maritime vessels. It will be targeted at leisure and commercial vessels under 24 m in size, boats which are a common feature of the UK’s 120 commercial ports and 400 non-cargo handling ports.

By enabling those vessels to move to clean energy, the £3.2million project will not only support the Maritime 2050 decarbonisation goals, but prevent an estimated 300 tonnes of CO2 from being released into the environment each year.

The project is being driven by a consortium that has secured funding through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), a programme funded by the Department for Transport, and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.

The Electric Seaway project brings together two UK businesses, with electric boat charging operator Aqua superPower Ltd and ZPN Energy with experience of creating battery solutions for off-grid applications. Its partners also include: the University of Plymouth; South Hams District Council; and the UK Harbour Masters’ Association.

South Hams District Council has ambitious carbon reduction and economic growth targets linked to the Plymouth and South Devon Freeport and will be providing a location for demonstrations.

The Electric Seaway aims to deliver a battery solution suitable

for shoreside applications, to develop the infrastructure to ensure batteries and chargers operate simply and efficiently, and to make use of all forms of energy sources including renewables.

It will deploy environmental sensors at all sites to monitor the impact of the new innovations and create a business model and strategy that will enable an increasingly wide-scale deployment of marine charging infrastructure.

The Electric Seaway builds on the success of the Marine eCharging Living Lab (MeLL) project, which involved a number of the current project partners and launched the UK’s first charging network

for electric maritime vessels in Plymouth.

to the knowledge and commitment of our consortium partners and reinforces Aqua superPower’s recognised expertise in marine charging and electrification. This is a fantastic opportunity to create critical marine charging infrastructure on the South Coast of England that can provide confidence to both leisure and commercial users by minimising range and charging anxiety as seen in the EV sector”.

James Foster, CEO of ZPN Energy, said: “We are proud to have our unique battery backed ultra-rapid charging technology included to ensure locations with limited grid supply can have rapid charging, ordinarily this would have meant slow AC charging as you typically see in some roadside locations. These installations guarantee charge rates and prevent unnecessary load balancing”. He added “This technology was originally partfunded by Innovate UK, so this is a great example of public-funded innovations being used along with best-in-class technology in areas that may have traditionally struggled to gain investment due to low initial utilisation”.

Dr Richard Pemberton, Lecturer in Mechanical and Marine Engineering Design at the University of Plymouth, explained: “There are a number of challenges we need to overcome if we are to meet the Government’s target of having a zero-emission maritime fleet by 2050. However, our existing

work in this area has provided a number of solutions and shown what can be achieved through collaborations between industry, research, boat-owners and other agencies. The Electric Seaway gives us the platform to build on that and to enable more people and environments to benefit from the transition to cleaner fuels”.

Capt Martin Willis, AFNI, Executive Officer & Secretary of the UK Harbour Masters’ Association, stated: “The UK Harbour Masters Association strategy is to align (where favourable) future Association Policies, Aims and Objectives with Government and Industry long-term policy, including ‘Maritime 2050’ and the Clean Maritime Plan. We shall embrace and meet future industry challenges, including amongst others: environmental and climate change; new alternative fuels and sustainable operating models; and future technical and automated systems. The UKHMA will develop, encourage and enhance industry relationships, partnerships and engagement with Government and other associated maritime organisations and agencies, collaborating in implementing an alternative low emission, environmentally-sustainable UK maritime future”.

With charging available in an additional ten new locations along the South Coast of the UK, The Electric Seaway will be supporting the already rapidly developing cluster of businesses in this area, encouraging further start-ups, and developing new jobs associated with low carbon marine.

The Electric Seaway will support the Maritime 2050 decarbonisation goals by creating an alternative fuel supply for those wanting to shift to electric options. The proposed solution will be applicable to the UK maritime market and will be exploitable internationally. Furthermore, there is significant economic potential for the UK, with the opportunity to act as a ‘firstmover’ in the electric boat and boat charging sectors.

New premises for leading pedestal manufacturer

The Sterling pedestal, manufactured from anodised aluminium, is a slender pedestal ideal for electricity supply only, available in a 250 mm, 500 mm, 750 mm and 1,000 mm height with up to four 16 amp and 32 amp sockets. The standard

illuminated head is fitted with an E27 5 Watt LED lamp controlled by a photocell. They can be fitted with mini KWH meters or RFID Card meters all MID-approved.

Sanitation systems for floating homes

An exciting new development by UK marina group Tingdene at Upton Marina (now called the Upton Lake Project) is for floating homes. The project has been underway since the start of 2022 and whilst ten are currently planned, this will be expanded to 28 in total in three further segments. The homes combine cutting-edge technology, with on-site facilities, including EV chargers for up to four cars and beautifully-finished interiors. Obviously, floating homes come

with some technical challenges. In this case, one of these was working out how to allow them all to discharge black and grey waste to the main foul sewer located some distance away on the far side of the marina.

However, for Warwickshire-based Marine Sanitation specialists LeeSan this sort of project is all in a day’s work. Working closely with the developers, the LeeSan team have designed and specified a custom-built, integral, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), transfer

tank with single submersible pump (supplied by LeeSan’s parent company Pump Technology Ltd.) for each home. All pipework from the home’s grey and black waste discharges directly into this. A safety operating panel and high-level alarm to warn of any challenges in good time to take appropriate action is also included in every system.

These individual tanks then automatically pump out to a master transfer tank comprising of another larger HDPE tank with, for belt and braces security, twin three-phase

pumps, also from Pump Technology Ltd, on a duty/standby/assist arrangement. This can easily cope with multiple homes discharging at once. From here the system then discharges via the ramp and across the bridge to the main foul sewer. An important part of the brief from Tingdene was that each system should operate just like a normal home and this has been successfully achieved.

World first for Peters & May

Global marine logistics leader Peters & May delivered the first Anthénea eco-luxury floating suite to Doha recently for its owner, the co-founder

of Triple Trend Design, Amal Ameen. Set to bring a revolutionary offering to the luxury hotel industry, the Anthénea Suite comes after five years of investment in research and

development into this style of living on the sea. Made solely in France by French veteran designers, engineers and naval architects, the autonomous pod was heavily inspired by the floating capsule of Karl Stronberg’s lair in the 1977 James Bond movie ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’.

treatment system (approved by the US Coast Guard) demonstrate its low consumption and eco-friendly practices. By only consuming what it needs and releasing clean water, the suite minimises its impact on the surrounding marine environment.

There’s no doubt that one of the Anthénea Suite’s most noteworthy features is its ability to seamlessly integrate with the marine world. Its creators compare it to a ‘lotus flower’, in the sense that it has a tranquil presence atop the seas, without impacting the ecosystem; even the ‘sand-screwing’ anchoring system works in harmony with the underwater ecosystem.

Anthénea Suite’s design model was extensively researched in order to fulfil its claim of being ‘unsinkable’. Following the development of one prototype, the final light and buoyant model has a spherical shape, which was found to be the optimal shape to guarantee the suites can withstand extreme weather conditions on the water, resisting cataclysms and ocean rising.

The smart floating space offers 50 sq m of living area across the main cabin and rooftop solarium, emphasising its 360 degrees naturefilled views available through its circular dome shape and expansive glass bottom. With its impressive temperature versatility, adapting from -30 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius, combined with the fact that it can be towed anywhere, this suite opens up a range of possibilities for its guests, whether they desire a unique experience in a frozen Arctic landscape or a tropical paradise.

Targeted predominantly at the French and leisure markets for professionals in tourism and yachting, but also for individuals and investors, this floating suite could be revolutionary for the tourism industry. No permits or time-consuming construction is required for the Anthénea Pods; they are an environmentally-friendly alternative to building hotels on land, and could be considered as an easier way for resorts to expand. The pod design is also aestheticallypleasing and could be a great way to add a unique touch to any resort.

The floating suite points towards a future in which humans will spend more time living on the water as

The 13 tonne suite, valued upwards from the base price of EUR250,000 announced for an entry model, was then loaded from flat racks, using a three-sling lift attached via D-ring fasteners.

Time for a get-together!

Summer is here in many parts of the world, the water is beckoning and people, including myself, remain keen to get out on it. The recreational boating industry is also still enjoying fairly strong demand for new and used boats, and most are continuing the third year of a seller’s market. At the same time, many marinas are renovating, reconfiguring, and/

or expanding where possible to accommodate the changing trends in customers’ boating desires. This is great news for marinas and boaters alike.

But – there so often is a but –we must also remember that the industry has traditionally been cyclical and there are certainly expectations that the tightening of credit and other efforts to take

some heat out of the economy will have an impact and there are some signs that this is starting to show up. So far, it seems to be showing up to a greater degree in the RV market, where inventories are building and sales mostly slowing.

There is also the reality that the recent boom years for recreational boating were driven by folks seeking to find an escape from the world of

potential contagion to the relatively open and uncaged isolation offered by being out on the water. As described by one such escapee back in 2020, “The boat is like having my own private island, where I can go with my family and just forget about everything else”.

After years of being on that island, some have developed island fever and as the long shadow of

Covid-19 further fades, the good parts of ‘everything else’ have come back into view. Many people are in a mood to be social, to not be stranded on that island.

The good news, of course, is that when your island is your boat, you aren’t stuck, and as much as boating can be about getting away from it all, it also has a long history of camaraderie, of bringing people together.

So now just seems like a perfect time to emphasise that camaraderie, particularly as some folks may be a bit out of practice, and with so many new boaters

not having had the chance to fully experience it.

It’s time for a get-together – or two, or three, or four – to help sustain and build upon the recent boating interest.

The most obvious get-together has got to be throwing a party. What boater doesn’t love a good party? Okay, there may be a few. What kind of party will depend greatly on your facility and what your customers would appreciate – and there’s no reason you can’t throw more than one to make everyone happy – or stage things to cater to kids and families earlier in the day and

those without kids in the evening. Hosting a customer appreciation barbeque is a sure winner. We know of customers who have driven two hours to the marina to enjoy a free hamburger or hotdog! Or maybe a clambake is in order. These can be great ways to both thank your customers and, more importantly, give your customers the chance to be together with other boaters, exchange stories, ideas of where to cruise and so on, as well as relating to one another the latest gadgets to add to the outfitting of their boats.

The parties don’t necessarily have to be free or funded entirely by the marina. Don’t automatically dismiss the idea of organising a ‘potluck’. Maybe you can provide a band or some other form of entertainment and arrange for food trucks to come by. People never seem to be tired of food trucks and they are pretty used to paying for what they order at the events where you find them!

While it may not necessarily sound like a party, some marinas host or participate in a ‘blessing of the fleet’ at the beginning of or at some other point in the boating season. The tradition actually goes back centuries, though originally not geared to recreational boats, but often tied to a festival of some sort. These days, fleet blessings cover a full range from fairly low-key affairs to elaborate boat parades to full-scale festivals with the parade/ blessing as a major component. The Provincetown Portuguese Festival & Blessing of the Fleet in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, comes to mind as a good example of the latter.

Of course, you can have a boat parade or similar event without the blessing, often tied to a holiday and often with prizes for different categories. The creativity and length some boaters go to in dressing up their boats is mind-boggling and it’s a fun approach for the boaters, the spectators and all involved.

Participating in and/or sponsoring fishing tournaments, regattas and rafting or overnight ventures are additional ways of bringing people together and continuing the increased interest in boating in meaningful ways.

A coastal marina I’m familiar with recently decided to sponsor a

fishing tournament and partnered with a local fishing club. They chose a date and posted some simple rules and a modest cash prize along with an entry fee, with the culmination being an awards ceremony at the marina at the end of the two-day tournament held over a weekend. They had anticipated up to 30 participants. They put it in their newsletter, posted a few flyers around town, and put it on the web. Word spread and it went a little viral. The marina got calls from numerous people who wanted to launch and haul and keep their boats at the marina for the tournament. Their transient dock was full and they made room wherever else they could. The fuel dock was busy and the ship’s store enjoyed many news customers. The event was so successful that the marina has now made it an annual event and has related that, in addition to the immediate benefits felt and ship’s store sales realised during the tournament, they have gained permanent new customers for dockage, storage and service.

Racing and regattas have long been mainstays in the yacht club world and definitely have served to recruit young sailors, keep people boating and inspire boat-owners to invest more time and money in their boat. These gatherings go a long way on the camaraderie front too. Races also serve to draw people into the boating world when captains go recruiting their friends,

co-workers or maybe even random strangers for crew! Who knows how many boaters were motivated to get out on the water themselves by the sight of a fleet of sailboats with their spinnakers flying on the downwind leg of a race. There are many new boaters who really want to enjoy the boating experience, but a number are not quite sure how to. Rafting rendezvous for an afternoon or a destination overnight are great avenues for expanding the boating experience and, especially for new boaters, to make new friends and provide a comfort factor for using

the boat around others. With a few raft-ups under their belt, some may well be ready to consider a longer group cruise, further building their knowledge, courage and confidence. Speaking of raft-ups, a small marina I know of started a movie night not long ago. They would set up a large screen in the middle of the marina where people could sit in their berthed boats or come and raft up in the fairways. It became an overnight (pun intended) sensation. It started as a lark for the owner’s daughter’s birthday celebration, but so many customers, non-customers and neighbours liked it and kept

asking the marina to continue it that they now run it once every two weeks. It just took off. The marina’s out-of-pocket cost is less than $100 for each movie night. He now includes a popcorn machine and he says he has to either get a faster or bigger one or another one as the demand is overwhelming. He also has the popcorn popping in the ship’s store during the weekends – the popcorn and coffee are free, and his soft drink sales have increased dramatically. The owner tells me that his increased sales from the snack bar and ship’s store more than cover his costs and he has gained new customers. Nearby deli’s, restaurants and the ice cream parlour applaud the events as they too are experiencing additional business.

On a different note, another facility partners with a local environmental group and the town to bring people together on ‘Earth Day’ for a waterfront cleanup. It too has grown and the facility, which has also enhanced its own green marina activities, now has a community-wide reputation for being environmentally-conscious and an advocate for clean water. That kind of goodwill is pretty priceless.

The bottom line with most of these gatherings comes down to the fact that the more that boaters are engaged, the more actively they will boat and promote boating to others, and the more likely they will continue to choose boating over everything else. During the depths of the pandemic the relative isolation that boating can offer was clearly a major strength, but barring the rise of some new more miserable variant, most people seem to have had quite enough alone time. It’s time for some togetherness. As the old children’s song goes, perhaps made most famous by Raffi, “The more we get together, the happier we’ll be”.

Access to the marina at Swansea in South Wales is via the River Tawe, which runs through the centre of the city. Its central location in the Bristol Channel makes for easy cruising to marinas in the East, including Cardiff, Watchet and Portishead, with Neyland and Milford Haven to the West. The rugged coast of North Devon, with its many attractive small harbours, is 20 miles to the South. Beyond the marina, Swansea has a large range of shops, as well as a wellknown covered market, in addition to bars, cafes and an increasingly cosmopolitan variety of restaurants.

The marina is split into three phases. Phase One is closest to the River Tawe and is accessed through the Marina Lock. Phase Two is beyond phase one through the swing bridge. It’s in the area of the National Waterfront Museum and the Swansea Museum boats. Phase Three is the furthest from the Marina Lock and is closest to

the Meridian Tower. In total, there are 550 fully-serviced pontoon berths with 240 volt 16 amps

supply, although 32 amps are available on many hammerheads. Electricity is charged on a prepaid

card system.

Facilities include a shower block and toilets with 24-hour access, a coin-operated laundry, free WiFi and car parking, where electric vehicles can be charged. Each bridgehead has a self-locking gate, access to pontoons being gained by a security card.

There is a fuel berth for diesel and petrol and a 20 tonne boat hoist and crane for stepping masts. Repairs to GRP and wooden hulls can be carried out and a sailmaker is also available at the marina’s boatyard.

Annual berth-holders are granted 16 weeks free storage in Winter and visitors to the marina can benefit from 28-day berthing discounts.

‘Variable Width’ option for mobile boat hoist

After months of design, manufacturing and rigorous factory testing, Marine Travelift has announced the introduction of a ‘Variable Width’ option for its line-up of mobile boat hoists. This revolutionary customisation option is available on both the BFMII and C-Series machines and will allow marinas and shipyards around the globe to safely and efficiently optimise space for service and storage.

The first Marine Travelift model with the ‘Variable Width’ option is a 75BFMII (75 metric ton lifting capacity) and was delivered to The Marine Group Boat Works’ San Jose del Cabo location in March. This model offers 9 ft of width variability and can seamlessly expand and retract under full load in 60 seconds.

The most important benefit this option will offer is the opportunity to block vessels closer together in

order to maximise space previously unavailable because of overall width dimensions on a standard

fixed width boat hoist. This means marinas and boatyards can maximise valuable service and storage space to serve more customers within their existing footprint.

The ‘Variable Width’ option can also provide the ability to move vessels through a doorway that was previously not an option with the width of a standard machine sized to fit piers. This would eliminate the need to double handle vessels when moving them in and out of the building. The design allows for handling a wider range of vessels, providing marinas and boatyards more flexibility to grow into different markets.

Whether an operator is storing boats indoors for the Winter or wanting more space for hurricane

storage, the width variation gives them the ability to fit more vessels in the same footprint without the use of yard trailers. This allows the yard to reduce equipment and also makes the operation more efficient when time is of the essence.

This new option is powered by a hydraulic ram, housed within the telescoping top beam, and is assisted by Marine Travelift’s Patented All-Wheel electronic steering option. These two components are also teamed with a control loop system that includes angle sensors, a distance sensor and wheel encoder to keep the machine square and ensure safe expansion and retraction throughout the full range of variability. These functions can occur on either side of the machine for flexibility and maximum manoeuvrability. It is also designed to handle full load across the entire width spectrum and can stop anywhere within the full range of variability, with or without a vessel in the slings.

To be certain that this option

reached all the goals set for it, Marine Travelift teams performed

months of rigorous factory testing that included countless hours of use

both with and without maximum load, on different grades, and a mock-up of the end user’s existing pier infrastructure.

Making the machine easy to maintain for the customer is a key feature, so serviceability was considered at every stage of the design and engineering process. Strategically-placed access holes are included to be able to access the hydraulic ram and it rides on tracks inside the top beam, so when disconnected it can simply be rolled out for any required service/ repair. In addition, the expand and retract functions operate on a greaseless system using high performance composite pads instead of a lubricant that could potentially contaminate the vessel or environment below. These pads are accessible from the exterior of the beam and have a high precision clearance to ensure no change in the machine’s geometry while the width is being changed.

Alternative to teak decking

The 2024 South Coast & Green Tech Boat Show will be held from 19-21 April to enable it to include the Ocean Globe Race prize-giving, following the yachts’ return from the epic race, which starts and finishes from MDL’s Ocean Village Marina. The show will return to its original dates in May, 2025.

WMC open for registrations

The organisers of the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference have announced that registration is open and all speakers are now confirmed.

The primary aim of the conference is to bring together marina industry professionals to network, hear new ideas and discuss topics relating to the marina industry and how growth can be managed and sustained.

Held over three days, the event will be hosted by the Portuguese Association of Ports and Marinas (APPR) and is supported by industry stakeholders, including Correct Craft, Vilamoura World, D-Marin and Marketing Marina. The conference will bring together over 300 international delegates, including leading marina and club

operators, owners and vendors of marina infrastructure, industry experts plus local government and tourism representatives.

Isolete Carreira, President of APPR, said: “The ICOMIA World Marinas Conference is the largest gathering of the marine industry and we are very pleased to have been selected to host this prestigious event in Portugal, 2023. We are absolutely delighted to bring together the greatest experts in the nautical industry, contributing to a process of exchange of information, ideas and collective learning”.

Apart from offering a platform for discussions and debates about pressing topics, the event will provide valuable insights from industry

experts on future leisure, social and economic trends and their impact on marinas.

The keynote speaker for this event is Bill Yeargin, CEO of Correct Craft and author of a number of books, including ‘Making Life Better: The Correct Craft Story’. Other speakers at the event will talk about marinas of the future with a keynote speech from Yiannis Kalogerakis on SMART futures and AI. A marina tour will take place on the second day.
