rade shows and conferences have been hit hard by Covid-19 over the past two years and even when organisers have managed to hold them, albeit under trying circumstances, events have suffered from reluctance by past exhibitors to return and for visitors to attend. It is therefore encouraging to report that METSTRADE has already announced that this year’s edition will feature significant improvements to its layout, which will include the full integration of the Marina Yard Pavilion into Hall 5 (see page 26). Well before then, Marinas22 on the Gold Coast of Australia will bring together a fantastic line-up of domestic and international speakers. The two-day program will be comprised of 24 conference sessions delivered through a variety of plenary sessions and workshops. It will tackle a range of industry issues, focus on specific operational matters and explore and showcase the opportunities and innovations of the future. The first day of the Marinas22 program is designed to provide delegates with the research, data and tools needed to leverage the recent growth in the industry and to set their businesses up for future success. The second half of day one will provide delegates the option of delving into

An article on page 8 of this issue examines the strategic partnerships to develop electric boat charging infrastructure being forged by Aqua superPower, the first global marine fast charging network. Staying with my theme of events, it was interesting to note that Medvolt Marine presented its new M7 model of a typical Mallorcan ‘Llaut’ equipped with a 100% electric motor at this year’s Palma International Boat Show – surely a sign of things to come! Berthing upgrade in Jersey
T
he second and final stage of the upgrade of the berthing facilities at Ports of Jersey’s Albert Pier in St Helier Harbour has now been completed by Walcon Marine. The aim of this part of the project is to create up to 26 new berths, with 24-hour access for some of Jersey’s larger vessels. This will free up space in other marinas while also benefitting the local maritime community, including marine traders and sea charter operations, as well as boat-owners. Following the replacement of piers 4 and 5 during 2014/15,
Walcon Marine returned in late 2021 to install new piers 1, 2 and 3 at the entrance to the harbour. This involved the installation of a three-metre wide back walkway, constructed using Walcon’s System 21 pontoons and 13 piled fingers. Ten of these, all 25 metres in length, also employ System 21. The remaining three of 28 metres, 25 metres and 12 metres in length, respectively, have been built using Walcon’s all-steel, commercialgrade Docking Solutions product and fitted with grey, GRP mesh, non-slip decking. Finally, a steel bridge gives dedicated access via
a security gate to this section of Albert Pier’s mooring facilities. The Albert Pier project is an important investment by Ports of Jersey and is part of its commitment to continue to invest in critical infrastructure. The regeneration of the area will help to ensure that the harbour is able to meet the needs of the island well into the future. The new pontoons are currently being used as temporary berths during the current refurbishment of the nearby St Helier Marina, which is due to be completed by the end of May this year.
Swiss CEO for MB92 Group MB92, the world-leading superyacht refit, repair and maintenance group, has strengthened its management team with the appointment of Jean-Marc Bolinger, a Swiss national, as CEO. Pepe García-Aubert, President and CEO of MB92, will continue to play a major role in the company as Chairman of the Board. Jean-Marc has occupied senior positions within a wide variety of industries ranging from business services, consumer goods, food and beverages to logistics and has led teams of up to 900 employees. During a career spanning 30 years and three continents, he held executive roles at companies such as Danone and the Primo Corporation. More recently, he has acted as an advisor for private equity funds, a role that led him to first work with MB92 in 2021 where he helped the Group develop synergies between the company’s shipyards in Barcelona and La Ciotat.
Plans for Cannes A 30-year concession was recently signed between the City of Cannes and Marina du Vieux Port de Cannes SAS, whose shareholders are Island Global Yachting (IGY) and the French construction group Fayat. It is now planned to enhance and rejuvenate this prime destination on the French Riviera, which provides 727 berths, while maintaining the historical integrity of the area. Tom Mukamal, CEO of IGY, commented: “We are honoured MARINA INDUSTRY • APRIL 2022
that the City of Cannes has entrusted IGY and Fayat with the management and development of this world-renowned site. Our team looks forward to providing our clients with hospitality solutions for all classes of vessels by bringing IGY’s expertise and professional standards to the French Riviera”. Modernising this historic port to increase its destination appeal will be carried out with a full understanding of the need to
respect the sensibilities of the local community. Enhancements will include berths adapted for people with reduced mobility, the construction of a semi-covered car park with more than 500 spaces (including 35 bus and coach spaces), the extension of the Albert Edouard Pier, the relocation and improvement of the careening area and an upgraded power supply for large boats, as well as a new Harbour Master’s office and service centre.

Yacht stevedore opens in Port Everglades
I
t has been announced by Peters & May that a new stevedoring company, Yacht Stevedore Solutions (YSS), has been launched in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Fully licenced as of 25 January, 2022, YSS provides a unique service as the only
company to completely specialise in yacht handling and logistics in Port Everglades. With its focus trained solely on the loading and unloading of vessels on to and off cargo ships, YSS will be responsible for every aspect of these
processes, including receiving, lifting and securing craft of every size. Matt Penfold, the current Managing Director of Peters & May US, will head up the new company. His accumulated experience will ensure that customers’ yachts are
transported in the most timely, efficient and professional manner, with the maximum of expertise and the minimum of fuss. Introducing the new company, Matt explained, “As Peters & May, we have been shipping motorboats and sailing yachts in and out of Port Everglades for more than 20 years. Given the increased demand for our shipping services, we felt it was also helpful to use our experience and skills to ensure the handling of this unique type of cargo is also in the hands of experts. The idea of YSS was born and we are now very excited to open up this new chapter”. Using the most robust and rigorously checked cranes, slings, shackles and other cargo-handling equipment available to load and discharge customers’ vessels, YSS can provide bespoke yacht transport solutions for its customers. Chris Perez, who has been named Operations Director for YSS, added, “Our industry has been so closely enthralled with ‘Stevedoring’ that it was a bit of a surprise no-one has attempted this before. It feels good knowing we are the first of its kind and it is extremely exciting to show what we are capable of as a company”. Simon Judson, CEO of Peters & May, welcomed the new company saying, “YSS will be a very valuable resource in support of P&M’s operations. Our customers will have the reassurance of knowing that their precious yachts are being looked after by flexible, highlytrained and specialised stevedoring staff”.

Increased capabilities at Ryder’s Cove
T
he recent delivery of a Marine Travelift M2300H Hydro M_Drive marine forklift, with a capacity of 23,000 lb, to Ryder’s Cove Boat Yard in Chatham, Massachusetts, allows the facility to service and store bigger vessels as its local market mirrors the industry trend of larger, longer and heavier boats. “Ryder’s Cove Boat Yard is a fullservice marina and boat dealership located right on the elbow of Cape Cod where we provide mooring, slip and rack storage to approximately 200 boats. This small owneroperated boatyard has been under the same ownership for 28 years,” confirmed its President, Alan Cohen. The new Hydro M_Drive forklift has many custom options to suit the specific needs of Ryder’s Cove, including a 105 inch wheelbase,
centre cab with wide view mast, a wireless remote for lift functions and dual-axis joystick controls. Ryder’s Cove chose the shortest wheelbase available for the M2300H capacity class. This provides the tightest possible turning radius to maximise space and allows the operator to handle longer boats in the current dry stack storage design. The M2300H delivered to Ryder’s Cove is the operation’s first Marine Travelift machine. On working with the company, Cohen agreed, “They have been very professional and easy to work with,” adding that “The sales process and set-up were smooth”. He concluded by stating, “We are thrilled with our new machine. We’ve owned other forklifts prior to the Marine Travelift and the M2300 is a well-engineered machine”.

Strategic partnerships to develop electric boat charging infrastructure
O
n 1 March, Aqua superPower, the first global marine fast charging network, announced a strategic partnership with AC charge point developer e-concept, which has developed a novel design of charging posts that have been approved for use in certain sensitive environments, including the canals in Venice. Aqua superPower will be developing charging infrastructure for marine and inland water applications deploying e-concept’s AC charging posts where environmental, cultural and heritage factors need to be considered. e-concept manufactures public and private recharging stations for electric boats and for the transition towards electric marine transport. Aqua superPower is rolling out a global network of marine chargers, which it will fund, own, and operate. The parties will be working together to install public Type 2 AC charging infrastructure, with particular focus on Venice, inland waterways, and European lakes where regulation and climate action increasingly drive the demand for electric boats.
Recyclable materials The charging post made by e-concept is produced with 100% recyclable materials and is characterised by a design that is integrated with traditional Venetian architectural features and environmental context. With Type 2 AC connectors, the charger complies with European legislation on public charging standards, providing significant safety and usability benefits. Aqua superPower already supports marinas, boat-builders and boat- owners in the drive to bring electric power to the water and reduce the impact of boating on marine ecosystems by adopting its network of fast chargers for electric boats. e-concept’s charging technology and hardware will integrate with Aqua superPower’s network and MARINA INDUSTRY • APRIL 2022

The company is also developing its network so that it will be accessible to electric boat users via the Aqua secure app or RFID card. The app will enable users to view a map showing charger options and offering navigational aids to guide them to their chosen location. e-concept’s and Aqua superPower’s partnership will promote its mission to reduce the impact of boating on the
marine environment by developing an all-electric and integrated global marine charging network.
Nowegian partnership In a joint statement in the UK and Norway on 13 April, Aqua superPower and Norwegian electric boat motor systems developer Evoy announced another strategic partnership. This will aim to facilitate the transition to
electric power for use by commercial boating. Aqua superPower and Evoy, one of the global frontrunners in the rapidly accelerating electric boat industry, will jointly promote the adoption of e-mobility in the marine sector. Given the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, marinas, ports, and harbours are looking to incorporate sustainable

Aqua superPower and Evoy will be offering their respective marine fast charging infrastructure and clean technology solutions to site owners and commercial boating operators, helping them to take substantial steps towards decarbonising and protecting marine ecosystems. Evoy’s 100% electric outboard and inboard motor systems are built for fast and powerful boats between 20-50 ft. The company’s solutions are suitable for all types of craft and can be employed to service workboats, fishing boats, tugs, ferries and even lifeboats. Like its new partner, Evoy adopted the universal electric vehicle Combined Charging System (CCS), which uses connectors to provide power up to

10 PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS
LeeSan pump-out unit ‘on the move’
I
n a situation where a boat needs black water to be pumped-out, but access to a nearby pump-out station is not immediately available can cause problems at a marina or in a boatyard. Now, there’s a solution from marine sanitation specialist LeeSan, which has developed a new mobile unit called the LSM Caddy. Shown for the first time at the Southampton Boat Show last September, the pump-out kit installed on board a boat attracted considerable interest from marinas and river estuaries all around the UK. Mounted on a powder-coated steel pallet, it features a peristaltic pump, a 500 litre storage tank and all the hoses and connections required to do the job. Newhaven-based Peter Leonard Marine has already purchased an LSM Caddy and mounted it in one of the company’s outboard-powered Smartliner GRP vessels, providing an ideal ‘on the move’ pump-out solution. This versatile craft can also act as a workboat, water taxi and to provide a range of marine services, including a base for a mobile mechanic. Fitted with a filter lance, the unit will also pump out bilges, taking into account the need to separate the oil from the black water, and by using its built-in bypass valve can even be used to pump water from a sinking or submerged boat in an emergency. In addition to a vessel, the LSM Caddy can be mounted on a small (towable) trolley, a pick-up truck

PUMP-OUT SYSTEMS 11
Marine waste disposal by Keco
I
n 1954, Keko Inc/Pump-A-Head and its predecessor, Kenton Equipment Co, was set up in San Diego, California, from where the business has established a worldwide reputation for excellence in the design, manufacture and distribution of pump-out equipment and marine waste disposal systems. Keco is committed to providing US and international customers for its range of equipment with quality workmanship, professional and knowledgeable sales personnel, and competitive pricing.
Over the years, Keco has designed a variety of equipment for many special applications and the company’s workforce has a ‘can-do’ attitude, so if a customer wants to mount a pumping system on the back of a
golf cart or needs a custom-built, sixwheel-drive pump truck, one can be designed and made to order. Keco Pump & Equipment sales@pumpahead.com www.pumpahead.com
Keco’s dockside marine pump-out equipment is commonly installed on fuel pontoons, piers, sea walls, service docks and other high traffic areas. These self-contained systems feature a low maintenance design and occupy a relatively small footprint. The ‘dockside’ configuration reduces pump-out system complexity and offers an intuitive, user-friendly operation for berth-holders. Keco’s ‘centralised’ marine pumpout systems (also known as in-slip pump-out systems) are comprised of two main components, a pump and the auxiliary connection points. The pump is connected via suction plumbing to multiple units strategically installed throughout a marina. The pump and different units can be separated by up to 4,500 ft, depending on the style and size of pump selected. ‘Centralised’ systems provide convenience to boaters while offering flexibility to marinas, together with ease of installation and opportunities for future expansion. 12 NATCHEZ ON THE WATERFRONT
Retaining the heightened interest in boating By Dan Natchez*
A single-handed sailing dinghy such as the Optimist intended for use by children and teenagers up to the age of 15 can introduce youngsters to the joys of boating.
C
ovid-19 has claimed millions of lives worldwide and has dramatically changed our way of living in numerous ways. However, in most areas of the world, the pandemic has also dramatically helped generate a booming interest in boating. It has attracted new boaters and former boaters have returned to the fold. Existing boaters have been using their boats more often and/or upgrading to better boats. New and used boat sales have been way up, to the point that there is little inventory. I was in a deli not long ago waiting my turn to order and struck up a conversation with the person ahead of me. He was talking about getting away for the weekend on his new boat. I asked, “What type of boat?” He replied, “A pontoon boat”. I queried him about the choice of a pontoon design and his answer was that his wife had picked it out. He had never been into boating before, but loved it – getting away and being able to escape from the boredom of staying cooped up, while having fun with the kids. The
MARINA INDUSTRY • APRIL 2022
woman behind me joined in and said that she had a small cruiser and had previously lost interest in it, but now loved taking the family on weekend adventures. The man behind her said that he just bought a used fishing boat and liked catching his dinners on weekends and cooking them on an open fire with his family. Another person offered that paddle boarding had become a great passion. Yes, it’s a very popular deli, but even I was surprised at the number of boaters in the line and their enthusiasm, yet these unsolicited comments were just a small smattering of current attitudes to boating. Just about two years ago, at the beginning of the pandemic, boating was in the process of shutting down and before that abrupt ‘pause’, things were not looking overly rosy in many traditional boating segments. Many national and regional organisations were pushing their ‘grow boating’ campaigns to lure people back into boating. Boating manufacturers,
sales organisations and marinas had been trying to come up with successful approaches to spur interest in boating. While paddle boarding, kayaking, canoeing and other individual personal watercraft use had steadily kept growing and led the industry in sales, most of the traditional boating mainstays had been down or lagging.
Cyclical tendency If one takes a more historical perspective, we see that boating interest has tended to be cyclical, with up and down periods. In down markets there is a focus on what can we do to spur interest and in up markets we tend to adopt the role of order-takers. The problem is that if one waits until interest in boating is falling or has fallen off, we have missed the boat (pun intended) of keeping people’s interest in boating up. Once interest has fallen, we are swimming upstream and trying to regain the desired momentum. Just a short time ago, when Covid-19 seemed to be on the
decline and the world was opening up, people started traveling again, with a significant percentage not being for business. Sports, music, theatres and other activities also started opening up more robustly and demands on individual and family time were again starting to compete with boating. Then the omicron variant suddenly appeared and threw everyone for a bit of a loop. By the time you are reading this article, it is likely (we all hope) that the current surge will have passed and people’s schedules will again start filling with other activities that will compete with their allotted boating time.
Keeping interest high So how do we keep the high boating interest fire burning? While the national and regional industry campaigns are definitely helpful, they can only be one part of the puzzle. Each marina, boatyard, yacht club, neighbourhood group and other boating organisation needs to continue to be proactive in promoting
NATCHEZ ON THE WATERFRONT 13 and maintaining interest in boating. There is no one formula to use and the options are only limited by one’s creativity and imagination. In terms of generalities, we know that boaters are a very social and communicative group. We tend to talk to other boaters even in the off-season – and even when not in line at a deli. People focus on things they like to brag about, as well as bad experiences that often seem to get exaggerated into something more horrible than the original offence. It’s a social network that can be your downfall if you end up on the negative side, but it is absolutely great if it can be tapped with positive reinforcements for boating. Because it is a social network, an obvious tool can be social media. Chances are the majority of your customers and would-be customers spend anywhere from a little to a whole lot of time on one or more platforms out there. I realise that this many-headed social media monster is often considered a bit
Each marina, boatyard, yacht club, neighbourhood group and other boating organisation needs to continue to be proactive in promoting and maintaining interest in boating. There is no one formula to use and the options are only limited by one’s creativity and imagination. of a nuisance, but if this is where your customers are, it just makes sense to try to meet them there. At a minimum, make sure you have a Facebook page and keep it updated. You don’t have to post every day, but if your last post was a year ago, it is probably not doing what it could for you. If you haven’t already done
so, ask your customers to like or follow your page. You also might want to consider starting a Facebook ‘group’ centered on your facility, whereby your customers may well do much of your publicity/keep-the-fire-burning work for you. At the moment, this seems to have taken more of a hold in yacht club and similar settings, but there is no reason it could not apply to many marinas as well. These groups become a virtual meeting space where folks will post pictures, stories, ask questions, look for crew, etc. Yes, it will require oversight, but by being the (or one of the) administrator(s) you have the ability to manage content. Be sure to make the rules for participating clear, for example (in somewhat abbreviated form): 1. Be kind and courteous; 2. No promotions, politics or spam; 3. Respect everyone’s privacy; 4. No hate speech or bullying; and, perhaps most importantly, 5. Complaints and special requests of the facility should be directed to the
General Manager. Negative feedback relating to other group members, the marina’s staff or their respective actions must be removed, but these groups can be incredibly effective and real community-builders. Since not everyone will be on social media, and as a complement for those who are, it also makes sense to pursue long-established means of communication such as e-mail or maybe even print. Some facilities send out weekly to monthly newsletters and the most successful of these in terms of boaters’ interest include pictures and descriptions of enjoyable events – from birthdays to other virtual or in-person celebrations. The adage ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ is true beyond measure. Stories about various experiences or visitors to the facility are also known to be a big hit. Others have included snippets on service and how various problems were detected and solved. The newsletter does not have to be Continued on page 16 4

stablished in 1973, MDL Marinas is now Europe’s leading marina group currently operating 20 major marinas and boatyards and managing over 7,000 berths. Its flagship facility, Ocean Village Marina, is nestled in the heart of Southampton and is so much more than a marina. Surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants and a cinema, the waterfront is bustling and sophisticated, where eating out, enjoying a glass of wine or

watching a film at the Harbour Lights Picturehouse is as much a part of the nautical lifestyle as the sailing. The basin, formerly used for commercial shipping, is deep enough to offer mooring facilities for tall ships and large yachts. It has also become famous for hosting the start or finish of round-the-world yacht races. The marina is home to the luxury five-star Southampton Harbour Hotel and Spa, where berth-holders can access exclusive discounts
at its café, restaurant, and beauty parlour through MDL’s Platinum Berthing package. It also features the city’s tallest building and visitors can enjoy exciting new restaurant and retail experiences. Just a short walk from the city’s popular West Quay shopping centre, the marina was originally part of an ambitious expansion plan of Southampton’s dock area and enjoyed life as a busy ferry terminal for the France and cross-Channel ferries in the 1970s. Virtually abandoned
by the end of the decade, it wasn’t until 1984 that a developer sought to create the mixed residential marina development seen today. Set up for berthing vessels of all shapes and sizes, including superyachts, the deep-water Ocean Village Marina has 326 berths, with a maximum LOA of 60 metres. The nearest pumpout station is located at Hythe Marina Village and both petrol and diesel can be obtained from fuel docks at Port Hamble and Hythe.

Boat lifting and storage ashore are provided by MDL’s nearby Saxon Wharf Marina.
Although Ocean Village doesn’t have its own boatyard, there are convenient local facilities at MDL’s Hamble Point Marina, Hythe Marina Village and Shamrock Quay. Boat lifting and storage ashore can also be provided by MDL’s nearby Saxon Wharf Marina, which has a 200 ton boat hoist and heavy duty, fully serviced pontoons accommodating boats up to 80 metres. The facility’s dry stack operation offers secure dry berthing and on-demand launching
and lifting for boats up to 13 metres. Ocean Village Marina has the usual shower and laundry facilities, but also offers MDL WiFi, Tesla and Universal Type 2 electric car charging facilities, secure storage for stowing boat gear and boasts the 776-space multi-storey Ocean Car Park, which is in easy walking distance of the marina. Education and training Another set of reasons to come to visit your facility might involve boater education or skills training. For example, most US states now require boating licences or boater education cards, with many targeted at children and younger adults. Working with groups such as the Coast Guard Auxiliary or other online entities can be very helpful to your customers and eases the pain of finding places for obtaining the required training for the licences. It also helps to bring people together. I know of one marina that arranges such approaches three times a year. The marina does not run the courses, but offers a room for them – and they even supply hot chocolate and cider with mini-doughnuts. That facility also MARINA INDUSTRY • APRIL 2022
provides other training opportunities in navigation, electronics and other aspects of boating that are offered as a means for advancing boaters’ knowledge as opposed to just a class to fulfil a regulatory requirement. For those who are not ready or prepared to host classes on site, there are ever more on-line courses/trainings available that you may want to encourage your boaters to follow. You might even want to organise a group to take the same course together, so they can subsequently discuss what they learned and follow up with each other. The American Sailing Association is just one entity with an ongoing provision of such programs. The more confidence and ability boaters have, the more often and extensively they are likely to use their boats and the more likely they are to invite friends along. When Covid-19 is not a limitation, picnics, regattas, socials, etc, are always a big hit. I am always in awe of people showing up for a free burger or hot dog to complement
their several hundred thousand dollar boat. It’s not, of course, the free food they are really showing up for, it’s the event and the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow boat-owners. Other facilities have followed the automobile industry in offering minor service specials for such things as oil changes, spark plug replacements, engine inspections or tune-ups. Just be sure that any additional work recommended in addition to the relatively simple item they came in for is really needed. Never sacrifice your customers’ trust for a few extra dollars across the counter! Also remember that keeping customers is a lot less expensive than attracting new ones, so talking with customers and making them feel wanted, appreciated and respected is priceless. Years ago, particularly in family-operated marinas, there was oftea a warm pot of coffee for customers to use and talk with the owner or manager. In many facilities, that warmth and camaraderie
An instructor provides guidance to a group of boaters as part of their training course before they venture out on the water. has been lost. Bringing back such opportunities can provide significant insight into what customers are thinking, what they like, what could be improved upon, what bothers them and so on – and for all of us tea-drinkers out here, you might think of having both at the table! My consultancy would appreciate hearing from you with your suggestions of how to keep the boating interest fire burning, even in good times.

A
s the need to improve safety afloat increases, so does the demand for temporary marker buoys. In many cases, these are used to alert sailors to the position of critical or expensive infrastructure or a dangerous obstacle in a navigation channel. Contractors and those responsible for placing these buoys often specify the lowest possible
solution based on cost alone, but this can sacrifice performance and reliability as many low-cost solutions do not meet IALA or national authority requirements. Almarin has now developed a new buoy, the B1250A, which has buoyancy of 700 litres and is the most compact navaid in its Balizamar range. The new model maintains the company’s philosophy of manufacturing a single-piece hull, with a central load-bearing structure in galvanised steel. For the first time in the Balizamar range, the daymark is also rotomoulded and there are two versions to choose from – conical and cylindrical – eliminating the need for a topmark. Concealed access to services
A patented system called Harbour In developed by Seijsener is a simple concept: When installing services at a marina, all connections are mounted in the deck of a pontoon or jetty instead of on top. Not only are the sockets for electricity hidden under the decking, but the water tap can also be found close to every berth and even the distribution cabinets for electricity, complete with circuit breakers and kwh meters, are hidden under an easy-
to-open hatch. This system achieves the result of high-level facilities within a tidy marina, whose berth-holders will appreciate the extra room gained for going ashore with luggage or transferring equipment and shopping back to their boat. They will only notice the Harbour In system when they need to access the services it conceals. Seijsener info@seijsener.nl www.seijsener.co

Watertight ship-to-shore inlets
S
easoned mariners know that watertight integrity is critical for reliable shore power connections. Stainless steel 30 amp and 50 amp inlets from Hubbell Marine assure dependable performance in a timeless design that now benefits from recent technical updates. Hubbell 125 volt Twist-Lock shipto-shore inlets now incorporate a self-supporting hinge configuration that holds the cover clear of the cord set when in use. They also feature an upgraded recessed thread design that provides faster connections while ensuring a completely watertight seal. Durable 316 stainless steel construction delivers a long service life and nickel-plated brass contact blades and a polycarbonate interior provide the two-pole, three-wire inlets with superior heat-resistance. Hubbell’s use of corrosion-resistant materials also
helps each device withstand harsh conditions, especially saltwater environments. Hubbell Twist-Lock inlets are fully compatible with existing Hubbell cord sets. Both UL and
cUL listed, they can be used on boats, as well as on shoreline installations at marinas. Utilising a 60.45 mm mounting hole to match existing patterns for an easy retrofit, the new inlets are
supplied with mounting screws, a waterproofing gasket and rear enclosure strain relief. Hubbell Marine custserv@hubbell.com www.hubbell-marine.com

It is designed for sanding both concave and convex surfaces due to the action of the abrasive plate, which is torsionally flexible. Innovia sfo flexisander@flexisander.com www.flexisander.com
Biocidefree antifouling Formulated for trailer boats, the biocide-free Seajet 2300 Hard Coating protects the hull and can be washed with a high-pressure hose after every haul-out without damaging the boat’s finish. It is recommended that two coats per season are applied below the waterline whether the craft is sailed in salt water, fresh water or brackish water at a maximum speed of 70 knots. The anti-fouling can be applied by either roller, brush or airless spray gun and it achieves a coverage rate of 10 sq m per litre on either wood, fibreglass, steel or aluminium surfaces. T
he WHY200 model from Monaco-based Wally (a Ferretti Group brand) has been described as the world’s largest fibreglass motor yacht in craft of under 100 ft by the parent company. This is borne out by the space age saloon, which is 23 ft wide and due to a particularly long cockpit begins approximately 30 ft from the stern, which amounts to more than a third of the boat’s total length. Interior design of the WHY200 motor yacht was the responsibility of Italian studio A. Teak flooring and a white ceiling continue from the cockpit into the saloon, with the space broken by a carbon-fibre and glass staircase. Whilst dividing the 650 sq ft saloon, the staircase is a structural necessity and provides an interesting centrepiece, giving flexibility for the space to be arranged around it according to how the area is being used. In the forward half of the saloon, the layout includes two facing L-shaped sofas, coffee tables and chairs. There is also an option to add a

The central staircase also leads down to cabins on the lower deck, which are accessed by a hallway leading forward between identical guest rooms on either side, each with inward-facing beds and forward bathrooms. The VIP suite is in the bow, with an inward-facing bed on port and storage, a sofa and a popup TV to starboard, together with individual toilets and a shared shower. The crew area is located aft of the staircase and contains the main galley. There is also a separate mess for the crew and an en-suite cabin for the captain. Sustainability in the superyacht industry

T
he superyacht industry has been quick to recognise its responsibility to act sustainably, with the goal of preserving the ocean world and ensuring there is a sustainable business for the future of the skilled marine architects, boat builders and interior designers that create such wonderful boats. Foremost in promoting healthy oceans is the Water Revolution Foundation based in The Netherlands, which was established on stage at The Superyacht Forum in 2018 to drive this change. It was set up in the form of a Dutch legal entity called a ‘stichting’, which is defined as an institution aiming to achieve a certain goal. From its beginning, Water Revolution Foundation was always a collaborative effort. It was initiated by a small group of superyacht industry leaders, who shared the belief that it was necessary to
MARINA INDUSTRY • APRIL 2022
change course in order to better look after our planet and guarantee the future of their industry. The Foundation’s mission is to drive sustainability in the superyacht industry through collaboration and innovation, leading the way towards neutralising its ecological footprint and preserving the world’s precious oceans. Healthy seas are not just vital for the future of the superyacht industry, they are also crucial for the planet’s wellbeing. The superyacht industry is the perfect breeding ground to trial, test and perfect new sustainable solutions. This is thanks to our affluent clientele, who have the resources to drive sustainability and build a sustainable yachting industry that is future-proof and attractive to the next generation of clients. A constructive and collaborative approach, aligned with the international scientific and
institutional agenda, is taken by the Foundation and by providing the superyacht industry with tools, knowledge and best practices, it has become the central platform facilitating the shift towards conservation. It aligns the superyacht industry with the strategic approach set by high-level international bodies, including the United Nations and UNESCO. The Foundation is fortunate to have strong support from many companies and individuals within the superyacht industry, who have united behind its mission to accelerate the change to sustainability. These companies include superyacht builders, designers and equipment manufacturers such as Ocean LED (www.oceanled.com), a Corporate Partner of the Foundation, which was the first to switch to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) for underwater lighting after
recognising their benefit to the marina environment, as well as refit yards that represent a forwardthinking cross-section of the superyacht industry ready to make a change. The Foundation has also been granted the status of a Public Benefit Organisation. This is a non-profit tax designation in The Netherlands that demonstrates that at least 90% of an organisation’s efforts are focused on the greater general good, beyond the interest of the sector it is operating in or that of the partners that are supporting it. This designation comes with strict reporting requirements, ensuring that the Foundation is operated in a transparent manner. Improved layout for METSTRADE 2022
I
n line with its programme of continuous refinement, METSTRADE 2022 will feature significant improvements to its layout, which will include the full integration of the Marina Yard Pavilion (MYP) into Hall 5. This continues the Show’s intention of raising the profile of special interest areas such as the MYP’s focus on equipment and services for the marina and boatyard sectors of the marine leisure industry. Following a one-off adjusted pandemic edition last year, METSTRADE 2022 will be strengthening its position as the world’s largest leisure marine B2B
exhibition and global networking hub at RAI Amsterdam from 15-17 November. Early indicators for 2022 are very positive, with 96% of visitors and 90% of exhibitors declaring their intention to return. Marine industry associations are experiencing significant uptake for national pavilions and METSTRADE is receiving many first-time applications, particularly from electric propulsion and electronics companies. Reflecting on the crucial role of this year’s show, Niels Klarenbeek, Director of METSTRADE, said: “The industry is eager to be back
at the world’s largest B2B leisure marine industry event after an extraordinary 2021 edition. We have created a balanced layout with key points of interest in every hall in close co-operation with our partners such as ICOMIA and the Exhibition Committee. This allows us to accommodate METSTRADE’s growth with more exhibitors, more space, more focus and an enhanced visitor experience. We cannot wait to see everyone return to Amsterdam in November”. Commenting on METSTRADE’s plans for a strong return, Udo Kleinitz, Secretary-General of the International Council of Marine
Industry Associations, stated: “Following the pandemic’s challenges, key industry stakeholders and associations are telling us it is more pivotal than ever for suppliers and buyers to connect with their industry peers. METSTRADE is the leading platform for leisure marine professionals wanting to stay relevant and up-to-date in the industry. With the entire sector present from across the full supply chain, it is the best place to source, connect and learn to help your business grow”. METSTRADE registration@rai.nl www.metstrade.com
