4 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2022
From the President - Pam Selz-Pralle Best. Investment. EVER! No. It’s not an embryo. No. It’s not semen. No. It’s not technology. It’s being on the Wisconsin Holstein Board. Best Return on Investment. Ever! Ask any person who’s served on the WHA board what their favorite part was and you’ll get the same answer from every one of them – the people. I’ve made close friendships with fellow breeders that I would have never known before. People outside my district’s perimeter. Those relationships are PRICELESS. It’s only four meetings per year. That’s it! Sure, if you get involved in more committees it can amount to more. But, that’s the easy part. We have an excellent staff willing to assist us. We have a terrific membership with willing volunteers. We have a strong history and strong traditions in dairying and breeding cattle. But, our hallmark
is our network of really good people. People who love Holsteins and everything to do with them. We have an organization willing to respond to the desires of membership. Your desires. Your vision. I highly encourage you to join the WHA board of directors. We all love cows, genetics, shows, and are very proud of the outstanding youth we cultivate. And the friendships… they are priceless. Trust me. It’s the best return of your time you will ever get! .

No professional pictures? No problem!
Something we hear every now and then from breeders is that they don’t have any professional pictures of their cows, and that is why they don’t want to place an ad. We say, that is ok! Over the past year, we have done a number of ads without professional cow pictures. We still love including a professional image with your ad but if you only have candids, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a beautiful and effective marketing piece. We are happy to work with your barn candids, show pictures that we have taken or from the Bullvine or Cowsmopolitan or other images you have. Photos should be taken on a camera or be a high-quality phone image. When you send the images, make sure that they are sending at the full size. This goes for professional shots as well. We can’t wait to put something together for you! 6 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2022

Other cows developed from the herd that have had a big impact were Mar-Linda-K Storm Vicki EX-92 3E, a Storm x Bell Boss x herd bull from Krulls x Mowrey Rocket and then back to a cow sired by Black Eagle that Linda recalls had longevity and high production. Today, Vicki is the matriarch of their five generations of homebred Excellent cows that boasts type and production. Mar-Linda-K Sweet Sensation EX-92, or Sweety as Linda affectionately calls her, is their current influential cow. She is an Airlift from a Damion and is the fifth generation Excellent back to Vicki. The Wrights have IVF daughters on the ground by Artist, Crushtime, King Doc, Cerveza, and soon coming are Fitters Choice heifer calves. Sweety resides at Rosedale Genetics Ltd. Mar-Linda-K Affirm Raelynn was another homebred cow that was a proud accomplishment for Mark and Linda. She’s sired by Affirm out of a Mr. Sam then a VG-89 Juror. She was purchased by Jordan and Whitney Ebert of Ebert Enterprises in Algoma and went on to be Honorable Mention Junior All-American Junior 3-yearold for them in 2011. Before she was sold, this cow luckily left the Wright’s a heifer calf, Mar-Linda-K Damion Raelae VG-86, which stayed in the herd for nine years and had six heifer calves that have gone on to score VG and EX. Several offspring are still in the herd today which they are hoping will make Raelynn a Gold Medal Dam soon. One granddaughter of RaeLynn, Mar-Linda-K Sterling RaeAnna EX-91 2E, has two ET Diamondback daughters that are VG and another granddaughter, Mar-Linda-K RaeLacey EX-90, has an EX-90 Saloon daughter followed by a VG-86 Blake two-year-old. Currently the Wrights have VG and EX cows sired by Diamondback, Armani, Saloon, Blake, Crushtime, Undenied, Cinderdoor, Mogul, Sterling, Defiant, Absolute, Awesome, Jackson, Too Hot, On Point, McCutchen, and Airlift. Their last classification in November produced a dozen Very Good first lactation cows with Diamondback being the best sire for young cows. Mark and Linda agree genomics for type has really improved the herd fast. While Mark enjoys a good looking cow, Linda is the mastermind of the breeding program. She breeds for sound type and function, keeping the good traits going while managing for milk with good quality feed. Current sires being used include Altitude, Warrior, Moovin, Archer, Luxor, Unstoppabull, Redlight, Hannans, Milio, War-Chant, Collision, Fitters Choice, King Doc, Tatoo, Denver, and Showtime. Heifers are sired by Jordy, Analyst, Crushtime, Crushable, Altitude, King Doc, Warrior, Unstopabull, Neon, Thunderstorm, Artist, Movein, and Redlight. The Wrights have a goal of having half of the herd being Red & Whites in the future so they are using more and more Red & White sires to achieve this. With the purchase of heifers from the Apple family, Rosedale Genetics, Castleholm, Heatherstone, Crescentmead, Red Carpet, Gildale and Milgene Holsteins, Mark
and Linda are eager to market some of these red offspring. Merchandising these bloodlines as well as those from homebred animals has been an important part of their marketing and show plan. They are consigning an Altitude September calf to the UWRiver Falls Falcon Premier Sale this spring that is a granddaughter of Apple B. The Wrights have consigned to this sale in the past as Kayla is an alumni. With all the embryos harvested from Sweet Sensation, they are planning on consigning some of them in the future as well. IVF will be a key tool for the top cows in the herd too moving forward. In addition to merchandising, showing is still a part of their marketing plan. Depending on the quality of cattle in a given year, they can be separated out for a show program depending on the level of show. On the local and state level, they exhibited at the District 8 Holstein Show, Wisconsin State Fair, WHA All-Breeds Futurity, Wisconsin Summer Championship Show and exhibited at the Dodge County Holstein Futurity for the first time this past year. The family will exhibit at a national show but only if they believe the animal will fit into the top half of the class. 2014 was a main highlight for the family at the WHA Futurity when Mar-Linda-K Damion Jilette EX-93 3E won the class and was also Best Bred & Owned, Best Udder and Top Production. In the 2020 WHA All-Breeds Futurity, Sweet Sensation placed second and Best Bred & Owned and Best Udder. Since 2014, the Wright’s futurity cows have placed in the top 10 each year. The Wrights are proud that after more than 30-plus years of farming, they are still in the business despite all the challenges they’ve faced. This summer the family realized their pens were getting too full and with a dwindling feed supply, the family held a herd reduction sale of 60 head. Linda and Mark have a goal of reaching a herd BAA of 110 and walking a homebred cow on the colored shavings in Madison. The top genetic animals are bred to sexed semen and the lower end bred to beef or used as E T recipients. Off the farm, Linda enjoys giving back to the community by leadership in 4-H. She is a county dairy leader where she mentors youth in dairy projects. She says this has been very rewarding as they are the future of the industry. The farm offers dairy youth in 4-H and FFA to show some of their Holsteins at the county fair each year. Linda admits she is reliving her childhood dreams through her daughters showing and still is with other youth. Linda also has been involved in the Wisconsin Farm Technology Day Committee, Jefferson County Agri-Business, and the Jefferson County Holstein Breeders. Mark enjoys his IH tractors and chatting with other fellow enthusiasts about how to restore his 1206. Both enjoy farm shows, especially World Dairy Expo, antiquing for old farm items, and just visiting with friends and farmers. “We are proud to be Wisconsin dairy farmers that have developed five generations of homebred Excellent cows, earned forage awards, quality milk awards, herd production honors, futurity winnings and best of all watching our daughters continue to stay involved in the dairy industry,” Linda says. Saturday Tours National Dairy Shrine
Dairy Shrine brings together all of those involved in the dairy industry who share a desire to preserve our dairy heritage and keep the dairy industry strong. Founded in 1949 by a small group of visionary dairy leaders, Dairy Shrine now has nearly 20,000 lifetime members that encompass virtually every facet of the dairy industry. At the National Dairy Shrine Museum, you’ll see the rich history of dairy in Wisconsin and the United States. There’s something interesting for everyone; learn about the history of ice cream, see historic dairy equipment and check out photos of champion cows dating back nine decades. You’ll leave with a better understanding of why, for nearly 8,000 years, people have depended on the dairy cow for life-sustaining milk and a better quality of life.
Hoard’s Dairy Farm
The Hoard’s Dairyman Farm was originally purchased in 1899 by founder, W.D. Hoard. One main purpose for operating the farm is to keep all employees of the magazine aware of industry trends and on farm happenings. From the original 100 acres located on the north edge of Fort Atkinson, the farm has grown to more than 800 acres of owned and 12 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2022
rented cropland. The herd includes both Guernseys and Jerseys. A portion of the milking herd is housed in a two-row, naturally ventilated freestall barn that was built in 2007. The cows are milking in a double-10 herringbone parlor that was also constructed in the same year. In the summer of 2019, construction of a second freestall barn was started. The facility now houses four robots where a majority of the herd is milked. The herd averages 69 pounds of milk per day on three times per day milking with 3.5 percent protein and 4.5 butterfat. In 2018, milk from the Guernsey cows was made into their own cheese, “Belaire.” This Port Salut-style cheese is similar to Muenster. There are number of other varieties of cheese under Hoard’s Creamery. To learn more visit www.hoardscreamery.com. Board of Director Election Candidates WHA Board of Director Elections will take place during the business meeting on Saturday, February 19. Pam Selz-Pralle and Craig Carncross will have completed two three-year terms and Bob Cramer Jr. has decided not to run for a second term. Below are members vying for a board seat. We will need at least five candidates to run for the four open board positions. Ryan Weigel
Hello Holstein Friends. My name is Ryan Weigel and I would like to announce my candidacy for a second term to the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors. I currently am employed at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore as an Animal and Dairy Science Instructor. I am also a managing partner on my family’s dairy: Weigland Registered Holsteins. I reside in Platteville with my wife Traci and children Kaelyn (18), Kenadee (16), and Keegan (11). Giving back to an organization that has given so much to me is a very strong reason of why I am seeking a second term on this board. I currently serve on the WHA Executive Committee and Co-Chair the District Shows Committee. I have previously served on the Lafayette County Holstein Board, National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) and the UW-Platteville Ag Advisory Board. Additionally, I have had the pleasure of serving as one of your delegates to the National Holstein Convention in recent years. For me, our association is a family affair from showing to conventions and everything in between. The youth in our industry are our future and very important to me. Not only do I have three children that are involved in the association, but I also work closely with youth through Dairy Cattle Judging and Post-Secondary Education. Our youth programs are possibly the strongest asset we have as an organization and I know that will continue for years to come. Keeping enthusiastic youth involved in our organization as they transition to adulthood is vital to our success!
With your support, I look forward to working with a wonderful group of individuals that will lead your Wisconsin Holstein Association through many successful years. Thank you! Nicole Speich
Hello fellow Holstein enthusiasts. My name is Nicole Miller-Speich and I’m pleased to announce my candidacy for the Wisconsin Holstein Board of Directors. I have worked in banking for 20 years and I am currently a Bank Controller and Board Secretary at a Dane County community bank. I hold a degree in finance from UW-Whitewater. In addition to my full-time job, my family and I milk anywhere from 15 to 20 cows year-round at our dairy Hobby-Hill Holsteins in Orfordville. My husband Josh and children Gracin and Chesney work alongside me to care for our Registered Holsteins and crop 45 acres and 25 acres of rented grass land. My daughter Riley farms with her husband Brooks Hendrickson in Belleville. Our dairy is small, but I am passionate about promoting the industry and getting youth involved in showing and providing guidance as they grow in their projects. I am on the Rock County 4-H Fair Board, Rock County Dairy Promotion Council and involved in the Rock County Holstein Breeders group. When I’m not farming, working or being involved with my county group, my hobbies include running, biking and baking. I would be honored to serve you as a member of the board of directors. My skills in finance and leadership will help propel our association for years to come. Thank you! January/February 2022 – Wisconsin Holstein News – 13

On December 1, the buzzer sounded and Dale Schuler’s game of life ended at the age of 79. His game tipped off on December 29, 1941, in Plymouth, the son of the late Theodore and Louise (Basler) Schuler. Throughout the first quarter, he attended St. Gregory Grade School and was a 1959 graduate of St. Gregory High School. His education continued at UW-Madison in the Farm Short Course program where he graduated in 1960. He joined the Army Reserves for a six-month tour of duty. After this tour of duty, Dale returned to Schuler Dairy Farms fulltime. In 1977, Dale & brother and team manager, Roy, began a partnership that lasted until 2004. Throughout this time, his passion for the sport of basketball ignited when he became the volunteer head coach at St. Gregory’s. In addition, Dale helped develop the Manitowoc County Little Hoopers basketball league. He also helped develop St. Gregory’s Athletic Association. In the second quarter, he married the love of his life, his assistant coach, Elizabeth (Betty) Schuler at Sacred Heart Parish in Two Rivers on June 19, 1971. They completed their starting line up with their five children, Christine (Nic) Schoenberger, Kelly (Jon) Isselmann, Mike (Theresa) Schuler, Matt (Amber) Schuler, and Sarah (Jamie) Arenz. His cheering section grew larger with the birth 16 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2022
of his 14 grandchildren--Nicole, Christopher, Bryce, and Ann Marie Schoenberger, Isaac and Reagan Isselmann, Deidre and Regina Schuler, Joseph and Mackenzie Schuler, and Pierce, Jayda, Dane and Maddix Arenz. Throughout the third quarter, Dale continued to be active in the farm, coaching, and numerous other organizations. He was a member of the Holstein Association, Dairy Herd Improvement Cooperative, Lakeshore Farm Management, county and state forage councils, Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative, and was a member and past president of the Valders Elevator Cooperative. He also became a member of the Knights of Columbus. Dale was active in his church community, as faith was at the center of all things he did. You could often find him commentating at St. Gregory Parish where he also served on the finance and school boards. In 1989, he was enshrined into the Lakeshore Hall of Fame and also was awarded Master Agriculturist in recognition of his agricultural ability and outstanding service to his community and state. After 29 years of coaching at St. Gregs, Dale began coaching JV girls basketball in Kiel, followed by two coaching stints with his daughter Kelly at Valders High School and KABA. No matter where he coached, players, their families, and opposing coaches revered him for what he stood for, as basketball was more than a sport to him, but a way to live life. When entering the fourth quarter, he knew it was time to slow down and enjoy retirement. He and Betty went on many wonderful adventures to Europe, Alaska, Shipshewana, Colorado, St. Louis and many more. At this time, he became his grandchildren’s biggest fan watching numerous sporting events and musical performances. He also finished his 50-year coaching career in 2017. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Elizabeth (Betty) Schuler, his children and grandchildren, his brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Sharon Schuler; sister and brother-in-law, Diane & Jim Lutz, as well as nieces, nephews, other close relatives and many friends. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Louise Schuler, brothers Roger and Duane Schuler, and numerous cousins. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Sharon Richardson Community Hospice team for their care and compassion towards the end of Dale’s life. His game may be over, but the values and lessons he taught those he coached and raised live on. Online condolences at www.meiselwitzfh.com. Sarajane Crave
Sarajane George Crave, Waterloo passed away December 12, 2021 at her home at Riverwalk in Waterloo of natural causes. She was born March 26, 1929 in Beloit to John and Rose Sullivan George. She attended Brother Dutton Grade School, St. Mary’s Springs Academy in Fond du Lac, and graduated from St. Mary’s College of Notre Dame, Ind. in 1951 with a degree in English. She taught at Catholic Schools in Milwaukee and Beloit for a few years before marriage. Sara married Robert (Bob) Crave, a Brother Dutton classmate,
on August 21, 1954 at St. Jude Church in Beloit. Bob and Sara were the parents of Charles (Joni), George (Debbie), and Thomas (Janet) of Waterloo; Mary of Madison; Paul (Delwyn) of Beloit; Bridget (Glen Vilim) of Onalaska; and Mark (Tina) of Watertown. Sara liked to point out that all seven of her children were redheads. Sara was a substitute language arts and social studies teacher and a very active leader in the Beloit community. She served on several boards such as the Turner School Board where she was elected its first female president; the Beloit Library Board; and Rock County 4-H Fair Board. She also served many roles in St. Jude parish life and liturgy: member of the Marian Guild, parish council, sang in the choir for many years, and was a gifted lector. Sara was a 4-H volunteer, ESL/literacy volunteer, and avid supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s sports, music and 4-H activities. She was gracious in stating her opinions, a promoter of social justice issues, was a stickler for grammar, and had a quick wit and knack for impersonating people. She enjoyed playing bridge with the same women for more than 55 years. About ten years ago Sara and Bob moved from Beloit to Waterloo where she quickly made friends through church and enjoyed frequent visits with family members. In addition to her husband and children, Sara is survived by 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Sr. Carla Crave, CSA, and many George and Crave nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Ben (Olive), William, and Richard (Marge) George and sister Rosemary Sheehan, and Bob’s sisters Ruth Power, Lucille Freeman Farrington, and Helen Kinney. The family is grateful for the attention and compassionate care of the staff at Riverwalk and Rainbow Hospice during Sara’s final weeks. Memorials in Sarajane’s honor may be made to Catholic Relief Services. Jerrold Meissner
Jerrold Meissner, 67, of Chili, passed away December 13, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born May 26, 1954 to Norman and Elaine (Ott) Meissner and united in marriage to the love of his life, Diane Dovenbarger in 1975. Together they went on to build a family and legacy full of compassion and intention. Jerry graduated from Marshfield High School in 1972. After a brief stint at the dairy science program in Madison, he returned home to partner with his dad on the family farm, Norm-E-Lane. In 1974 they began the first of many expansions on the farm and never looked back. To have farmed with his dad and brothers and eventually his son and grandsons was one of the greatest blessings of his life. In March 1976, he graduated from auctioneer school and got his start in auctioneering with Landini Realty & Auction Service. From there he used his profound auctioneer talents to support hundreds of community events and fundraisers. Jerry was passionate about everything in his life including his family, his farm, his community, hunting, the mountains, and fishing in Canada. He found a sense of pride and solitude in sharing his love for nature and the wilderness with all he knew. He loved being involved and felt strongly about generously giving back to his community and industry, and encouraged others to do the same. His involvement started young in 4-H and FFA leadership. He served on numerous boards and committees including St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, House of the Dove and Marshfield’s Hope Lodge. He supported many causes such as the National
Farm Medicine Center and Auction of Champions, Rich Seubert’s Celebrity Trap Shoot, CureSearch for children’s cancer research and many more. Jerry shared his love of the dairy industry through years of involvement with Dairy Business Association and Edge. Jerry’s true life’s work was wrapped up in his family, which was always his #1. He was a deeply devoted husband, father and grandpa, showing us all how to work, how to play, and most importantly, how to love. From sporting events to tree stands, pursuing the mountains and beaches, ranger rides and Sunday snuggles, Packer games, and his beloved hunting cabin, time spent with his kids and grandkids was irreplaceable. “Dad didn’t tell us how to live, he lived and let us watch him do it.” Jerry’s family wasn’t always blood, as is extremely evident in the dear friends around him. Being a business owner has many responsibilities, but people were always his priority. He created a “family first business” and lived by that motto - his employees were absolutely family. His legacy will live on through the many people touched by him. Jerry is survived by his loving wife Diane; his children Josh (Sheri) Meissner, Jennifer (Matt) Schaefgen, Tiffany (Daniel) Halan and Ashley (David) Welter; his grandchildren Emmett, Jordana, Dawson, Trey, Molly, Drew, Lukas, Easton, and future baby boy Welter. He is further survived by his sister Sandy Garrand, brothers Butch (Sharon) Meissner and David (Tammy) Meissner, and brothers-in-law, Vance Dovenbarger, Eric (Cindy) Dovenbarger and Kurt Dovenbarger as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Breeders, and being involved at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and her Homemakers group. When the boys were grown and the cows were gone, Bob and Leondra took time to travel. She loved to see new places and bring back souvenirs for the granddaughters. In her retirement, she also made time for volunteering with the church, and at local schools and hospitals. She devoted extra time to her sister, Ruth when she became ill. After having two boys, her special joy was her four granddaughters, who she loved very much. She loved to shop for them and have them over as often as possible. When the great-grandkids came, it was icing on the cake. 18 – Wisconsin Holstein News – January/February 2022

Happy 2022! Things have finally begun to return to “normal.” Or whatever normal is in the dairy industry. We just completed a very successful Junior Convention in Appleton with over 350 Holstein members, chaperones, and volunteers in attendance to help make the event a success. We are lucky to have such an involved Junior Association and incredible sponsors and volunteers that help make this possible. As we transition to the new year, we look forward to Adult Convention in February. I encourage all YAC members to attend and become more involved in the Adult Association. We look forward to having a YAC get together for the past JAC teams from the 2000s and 2010s and members during convention. Be on the lookout for more details to come. The next round of membership cards will begin arriving in the next few weeks. Please be sure to pay your membership and let the office know of any changes that are needed for your account. In order to continue to receive the Wisconsin Holstein News we ask that you renew your membership by March 15. Renewals can be made by mailing a check, through the online system, or by calling the WHA office. The March Issue of the News will be the next installment of the Midwest Holsteins. This is a great opportunity to advertise any spring sales consignments to an even broader network of Holstein enthusiasts. Contact the office now to reserve your ad space! I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event and making 2022 a great year for WHA!
2021 Cover Contest In the past, the February issue of the Wisconsin Holstein News featured the winning image from our cover contest. Now that the January and February issues are combined, we will be moving the winning cover contest image to the April/May issue. We are still taking entries for the contest! You can enter your photo by emailing your photo to marab@wisholsteins.com. Images must be taken on a camera. Phone photos will not be accepted.

Thank you2021 Sponsors!
The Wisconsin Holstein Association would like to thank our sponsors from this past year. Thanks to our sponsors we were able to host successful junior activities and member outreach events. Sponsors help to promote junior educational programming which provides and supports education that will strengthen the dairy industry with better leaders, more educated farmers, and promote youth to retain careers in agriculture. In the future we aim to continue to organize more of these events and are hopeful that our association will get stronger with time thanks to our sponsors’ support. * Note: In the December 2021 issue, we missed two important sponsors who helped make the WHA All-Breeds Futurity a great success. IPS and Agropur have been major supporters of WHA for a number of years and we’d like to thank them for their continued support of our programs. We sincerely apologize for the oversight.

Wisconsin Holstein Presents...
The 2022 Wisconsin Holstein Treasure Quest What is the Wisconsin Holstein Treasure Quest?
This event is a celebration and promotion of high caliber calves and their breeders and owners. Proceeds from this event benefit the state association members and fund breed promotion events held each year.
What can state members do to get involved?
State members can enter Registered Holstein heifers born between March 1 and December 31, 2021. Any state member can nominate a heifer using the form below. All entries must be received with a fee of $80 by February 4, 2022. By entering your calf in the Treasure Quest, you are committed to potentially having the calf selected as the winner. The $80 entry fee also includes an entry in the Midwest National Spring Show or Midwest Spring Red & White Show. Members can also participate by purchasing a lottery ticket for the chance to win one of the entered calves. There will be 125 lottery tickets printed, and 123 of them will be sold for $100 each. The remaining two tickets will be auctioned off; one will benefit the WHA Scholarship fund and the other the WHA Juniors. These auctions will be held at the state adult convention and spring show, and the tickets purchased will automatically be in the top 12 drawing.
When and where is the drawing held?
The raffle drawing will be held following the selection of Intermediate Champion at the 2022 Midwest National Spring Holstein Show on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Ticket holders must not be present to win, however, they do need a representative to choose a calf or bucket on their behalf. Ten tickets will be drawn on the day of the show, and they will be joined by the two tickets auctioned for a chance to win a new Holstein calf. Eleven winners will receive consolation buckets, valued at $100 each and one lucky ticket holder will go home with a calf. The breeder whose calf is chosen will receive a check for $5000, and those not chosen get to return home!
Where can I get my ticket?
Tickets can be purchased from any WHA board member or the state office by calling 1-800-223-4269.
Additional Information
All calves entered prior to spring show will be on display at the show and led into the ring at the time of the drawing. The Wisconsin Holstein News will feature a special section on the entered calves in the March and April/May issues.
