Large deck surface area enables multi-functional use of space as both a deck for relaxing but potentially as a performative space as a stage for various events

Stairs 1890 wide to allow for two-directional foot-traffic.

Decking to be coated with oil based stain and water repellant to prevent staining from food or drink

Tree interacts with deck to provide shading from afternoon sun Side of stairs runs flush with deck edge detailing to provide a continuous, aesthetic surface Deck cut-out engages with site-plan and allows for future growth of tree

Cantilevered section provides seating aligned with alcove and curve in brick wall to provide a space for contemplation

Deck allows acces for interaction with the tree at ground level, producing two separate spaces

Inefficiency of joists due to deck cut-out

F22 stress grade joist used to provide greater structural support for small individual member Joist hangers used to support cross-members to create opening for tree

Double joists used to provide greater structural support around opening

Concrete stairs 1890mm in length, riser 152mm, going 300mm as per AS1657 F22 stress grade joist used to enable greater singlespan and cantilever due to the deck cut-out

400 x 900 x 600 Reinforced concrete footings for stairs

PERSPECTIVE 1

Concrete stairs extend 160 below ground, preventing slippage of earth around base

Sculpture to be placed in alcove to create a feature that interacts with sunlight passing through gaps in the brick wall

PERSPECTIVE 2

Hung joist used to fix deck edging

Pad footing offset in comparison to other pad footings on southern side due to shorter bearer length and position of stairs

Header joist used to to fix deck edging

Cut-out around tree supported by joist hangers

10 mm gap between bearers and brick wall

Top brick of engaged pier cut to height 50mm to support bearer

Engaged piers supporting bearers

PERSPECTIVE 3 Construction as Alchemy ARCH10002
