01 Inclusive Pecuniary Spatial Ideology 09. 2020 - 05. 2021, Manchester School of Architecture Thesis project (individual) Baishizhou urban village, Shenzhen, China

Inclusive Pecuniary Spatial Ideology is an agglomeration of two paradoxical urban ideologies in the current capital-oriented world. Its construction is completed by studying the existing gentrification strategies of six iconic urban forms(in south china) and then repeated deliberation. The master plan was designed to mingle the inclusiveness of urban village and the social order of a modern city under its extremely crowded exterior. The group of people to be inclusive in this project is the undocumented migrant.

World Building Low Floor Area Ratio urban space like the urban village in the central city represents either a deliberately carved cultural protection or inevitable gentrification in developing frontier city. The inclusive pecuniary urbanism requires compromisation and consensus from both upper and lower classes to assure the economic prosperity of the collective party. The tentation of the agglomeration has an iterative revision process before delving into the design of key fields. The spatial layout has an incongruous feature, with detail research and studies of different urban building typologies, such standard office building, residential high-rise and urban village houses.

Thus, the lifting up of the commercial blocks can reduce the demolition of the existing village houses

Those village houses that conflict with the new development will be lifted, some overlap the residential while the others are ‘inserted’ into the office buildings.

Village houses on top of residential buildings are moved down to a lower level, to ensure the deck level’s security and overall spatial quality.

The Agglomeration The agglomeration process started with the massing of the original urban grain and the new development. The massing of the new development was extracted from Chinese open resource, released by the developer. It was followed by using the concluded tactics with deliberation from the spatial prototypes to revise the master plan. Due to the complex spatial configuration of the new development and the existing in different ways, space is interweaved vertically and horizontally after the strategic adjustment. However, it could be mainly addressed into six typical levels, which further informed the levels of plan drawing in this project. Titles of six levels from bottom to top are the incongruity, undocumented floors, pecuniary residences, sky mall, the deck and the lifted lives. 9


Daylight Compromisation The disadvantage to the remained urban villages from the new development is the lighting problem. Shenzhen has a dimension of 23.5 , which is to the south of the Tropic of Cancer. Therefore, the sun’s altitude angle is greater than sixty degrees throughout the year. The vast deck will block most of the direct light. The simulation on the right shows the shading condition relatively on the winter solstice and summer solstice(8 am – 4 pm), simulated by the ladybug plug-in in the grasshopper. The darker the area, the less sunlight gaining.

Complexity of Transportation The meaning behind the coexistence of inclusiveness and order is cooperation and compromise between classes. To meet the new social management, the tenants in the remained urban village need to sacrifice their daylight time while the new residents have lost absolute privacy while gaining the convenience and intimacy brought by the urban village. The efficient transportation system requires the close cooperation of the two classes as well. Unlike other ordinary urban territories, the inclusive transportation aims to deliver different classes of people to places. 12


Incomplete Property Right Low house price in urban villages is an essential condition to ensure urban inclusiveness. Therefore, whether it is a remained, elevated or inserted village house, the homeowner will have the use-right of the property. Similar to the incomplete property right in the original urban village, the economic activity will not influence the price of the village house.

Commentarial Immersion This commentarial immersion takes the audience to the main public spaces of inclusive pecuniary master plan from a first-person perspective, including the incongruity of level one, the sky deck of level 5 and the lifted lives of level 6. Commentarial Immersion The second ones are three downloadable open worlds of three different ‘field of play’. Audiences can further discover the world by their own. 02 The Delimma of Post-humanist Environment 07. 2020 - 09. 2020 Canopy Institute of Design pre-thesis project (individual) Shenzhen, China This workshop studied the geographical distribution of land value and the corresponding commuting cost of the specific group: CIT worker who undergoes finantial saving. The design method is to re-imagine a contemporary social issue in the post-humanist environment. It is a pre-thesis while providing a detailed site analysis for the Inclusive Pecuniary Spatial Ideology. The workshop came out with a solution of decentralised data storage distribution in to each social housing so as to reduce the inevitable physical daily commute of the elite migrant group, reducing the burden of transportation in the central city through the deconstruction of data centre and converting into a urban scale’s imaginary.

Industries distribution and active daily commute Two maps above demonstrate the geographical distribution of Shenzhen and the significance of urban village to people’s daily commute. Shenzhen is divided into ten districts. Each district has govermental designated active industries. The active industry in Nanshan District is high-tech, with significant daily commuting that closely related to human activities. In addition, Futian District and Luohu District are active in modern service industry and tourism respectively. Moreover, inudustries least relevant to active daily commute are manufacturing, land logistics(railway, land transportation, and ports), and nature conservation industries. They are mainly distributed in Bao’an District, Guangming District, Longhua District, Longgang District, Pingshan District and Dapeng District. 28

Commuting cost and housing land value Commuting cost is the collective term for housing rent and daily commuting time. For the first category of housing mentioned before, the commuting cost in Shenzhen is closely related to the land price in Shenzhen. In places where the basic land price is more expensive, the commuting time to the high-tech park is relatively short. Where the basic land price is lower, commuting time are required several times than the former and accompanied by more sopisticated transportation systems. However, urban villages like Baishizhou have been against this “constant” capital urban phenomenon in the past two decades. Its land price is similar to that of Hightech Park, with only one station of metro away from it. People living in Baishizhou village are very convenient to work, and the rent is as low as the first category housing in Longhua district and other peripheral area. This is unattainable by the first category of housing. The reason why urban villages can provide such cheap housing is because they exist outside the formal real estate market. Their land use rights belong to the villagers. 31

Deconstructing Data Centre Cloud computing is the main electronic technology that supports remote office, and the data center is its core hardware facility. Tencent’s data centers have spread all over the world, and large companies to individuals are using their cloud computing services at different levels to store their own data and information.

Post-humanist Imagination In the post-humanist environment, daily commute to CIT industry is unnecessary and not inevitable to all individuals. Each household will be considered as a server, with each building as a unit becoming the data centre, providing cloud storage for occupiers. Every residential will need at least one central space to be the computer hall,w ith a corresponding cooling system to reduce over-heating. 34

The project includes the design of a community hub to help to manage the grief of the existing community through place attachment. The design had a structural challenge to reuse the abandoned arches on site, with a strict alignment on UK building regulation(fire safety, accessibility, services, etc) and low-carbon envelop design.

Co-binning Economy addressed the bin crisis of the existing community in the Collyhurst through bin centralisation. It explored how to use co-living to develop a sense of community by promoting collective responsibility for public services and the environment. It included the design of community master plan, two detailed building typologies and a community plastic workshop.

04 Binning Centralisation The master plan development was driven by the insert of a new plaster workshop and the centralisation of binning spots, associated with a jogging strip and allotments. The activity of binning is converted from crisis to a daily routine that bring the community together among ages. The final project of my undergraduate was the design of a social housing in Belfast. Physical model making was one of the most significant method I used to test the structure, form and cladding typology. The design tempted to be spatial efficient but ensure the sense of safety, welcoming and daylight access for temporary occupiers.

The project aimed to build a place that embracing both the local and the tourist in the food culture of Porto. The atmosphere was design to provide people with sense of inclusive in the Bolhao market. Model making of fine steel elements in the dinning area was the challenge of the production process.
