DESIGN STATMENT The Oshodi heritage park is locate in Oshodi, a suburb of Lagos state, Southwestern Nigeria. This area is the largest market place in Lagos city and second largest market in Nigeria. The history of the market could be trace back to 1800s, establishing by British to support the slave trade activities. Since then the Oshodi become not only a commerce center but also a transportation hub. However, in the last three decades, the emergence of criminal activities at the market force the city council to reconsider the planning toward the market and cause to the demolition of Oshodi market at 2015. The land will be used to construct a new bus terminal to mitigate the traffic pressure. This approach caused to a strong opposition from public, since the market already become their support both financial and spiritual. The Oshodi heritage park is beside the former market place, and design as a traditional symmetrical design. The sculptures and grass land is the only elements this park have. The site is half seal and rarely used by public. The current site is becoming an assembly point for “Danfo” which is the mobile merchant and private own regional bus. “Danfo” as a cheap transportation and economic tool are existing all around Lagos and vast number of family are relying on the van to support their family. Therefore, the owner of danfo could means a stable income for deprived family. Since the “Danfo” is used as a moveable warehouse and transport form slum, this vehicle strongly connects to the markets and bring more employment in city. The design position is to reconsider the relationship between a public square in Lagos and business activity, respecting how the Lagos civilian fighting for their family and life. The yellow vans and the chaotic market are already part of the Lagos’ identity. The unique paddles sales situation around the site could be considered as an opportunity to transform the site into a place where the trading evokes the site as practical civic space. The design should provide the potential to allow the public to develop the site and occupy the site as a van market or rallying point for people. At the meanwhile, by using the elevation to restrict the movement of “Danfo” and guide the vehicle to resident and leave the site. Moreover, the site need to provide users several seal spaces for exchanging and rest. Considering the site also exist many urchins. The safety issue could be solved by the material of the road, the deceleration strip combines with the flyover which connect the site. The parking area for the “Danfo” bus is design for the pedestrian could easily saw the products and the merchant could load and unload quickly. Each vehicle shares a space where the restraint device can use as a display table. The edge of the small space is design as a segmentation of need and the form of edge is providing people a position to stand on top and gathering the people around. The central of the site is reserved as a public square and the system could function at same time.
