LOCATION PLAN

SITE CONTEXT Sider Myer Asia Centre building is located at south-east corner of MelbUni, beside the Swanston street tram station (Stop 1). As one of the busiest area of the university, this site is full of pedestrians, vehicles, bikes, trams. Building was designed by Architect Nation Fender Katsalidis, and completed in 2001. The street level surface of the building is the famous con-ten sculpture “Spirit wall” made by Akio Makigawa (1949-1999). Spirit wall has been defined as the sum of Makigawa’s sculptural career and draws together symbols often used by the artist. The five simplified houses refer to five continents of the world, while the annulus (ring) is the Eastern symbol of heaven. The structure is design for the pedestrian area in front of the SMAC building. This area includes several street trees and few bicycle locks. However, this area is meanly considered as a transition space and dominated by the mass building and the vibrant transportation. Therefore, the character of this space could be reform and promote to stand out from the background.

Mix Use Space

The design concpt is trying to found a usable space for different kind of scenario. The first step is to organize those users into a compact space, in order to creat a relatively safe sapce for use. Then, give each funaction a resonable location and aviod overlap with each. At last, the idea of moveable structure provide the change for users to change the sapce as they wants. Therefore, the srructure can satify a space that always changing and shifting.

05

FORM GENERATION

The basic need of this site is form the people who waiting for others and the bike riders need more space for bike lock stand. Moreover, those funcation have to establish and emerage with the street tree exist on site . Therefore, this developing process start with form small green space. Then, the structure rise up in order to suit for a peron to rely on. Then, the rest of the space could separate into cells in order to accommdate more bike stands for students.

06

DESIGN PRECEDENTS

Form the design precedents, the moveable structure could be a track structue and combine with a soild steel structure. In order to transfer to a bike lock as user require. and the void space could be use as a small water purifiction pot. At last, the struvture can use a bright color like yellow to draw the attention form pedestrian.
