OUR PLEDGE TO YOU Change is afoot. We suppose it always is, but doesn’t it all seem to come at us so much faster in today’s world? We see change all around us. The real estate world is a complex environment that most of us only travel once every 10 years. This infrequency, coupled with the ever-changing laws and emotional toll, makes it very hard for most of us to navigate. That’s why we rely on a professional. BUILDING HOPE The Windermere Foundation’s collaboration with Seattle’s Housing Hope fosters sustainable futures.

As the longtime chair of the annual Windermere Golf Tournament Benefiting Housing Hope, Kay Frederickson is a change agent. Her passion? Building support for one of Seattle’s most influential nonprofits. “The missions of both the Windermere Foundation and Housing Hope are almost identical,” Frederickson says. “They really do parallel. Families in need are provided a full range of services under one umbrella.” For the past 29 years, the Windermere Foundation has donated a portion of the proceeds from every home purchased or sold towards supporting low-income and homeless families. Housing Hope has been breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness in Washington’s Snohomish County and Camano Island for 30 years. Focusing on homes, jobs, and children, the nonprofit believes safe, affordable housing anchors a stable foundation for families in crisis. Housing Hope manages 479 units in 22 housing developments and has helped 301 families build their own homes through its sweat equity program. The program requires 30 hours assistance per week by the future home owner as a form of down payment. “Homelessness is not something that people choose,” says Frederickson. “It can be a matter of poor lifestyle choices,

perhaps, but it can also be that someone has been raised in a homeless environment. It helps break the cycle. Housing Hope is the real deal. They have made an impact on many people’s lives and have helped so many become productive members of society.” As a board member of Housing Hope and a retired Windermere Real Estate agent, Frederickson has been integral in keeping the two companies aligned. Windermere Real Estate was influential in Housing Hope’s very first shelter, purchased in 1988. The Windermere Foundation granted Housing Hope $60,000 to remodel the building. Ever since, many Windermere offices in Snohomish County have been raising funds for Housing Hope through bowl-a-thons, golf tournaments, “Windermere Serves” events, Stone Soup Sponsorships, and community service days. Over the past 24 years, the Windermere Golf Tournament has raised $480,000 for Housing Hope. Furthermore, Windermere agents continue to donate to Housing Hope via each real estate transaction. Opening in 2019, Housing Hope’s next major project has begun in downtown Everett, with plans for several HopeWorks Social Enterprises, including CafeWorks, ReNew Works, and 65 homeless and affordable living units—all of which help those willing to work toward a brighter future. --housinghope.org

LAID-BACK LUMMI ISLAND Modern day stresses seem to melt away as soon as you step foot on Lummi Island. With a population of about 1,000 people, mostly everyone knows each other, and even if they don’t, they still wave hello. Foraging isn’t a trendy buzzword here. Rather, it’s a way of life (don’t be surprised when you see locals rummaging around the bushes collecting salmonberries). And forget about Costco or Target. A lone general store supplies groceries, alcohol, and movie rentals and doubles as the island’s social hub. Small town life may not be for everyone, but a dose of it is the perfect remedy for stressed out urbanites. For how remote the island feels, it’s surprisingly easy to reach. A seven-minute ferry crossing just north of Bellingham, Washington, delivers passengers (and their cars if desired) to the nine-square-mile island bordering the San Juans. Its raw wilderness is part of the appeal. Hiking, cycling, and kayaking are the best ways to take in the island’s beauty. Three nature preserves, lush with Douglas firs and crisscrossed with trails, lure visitors to the island’s interiors. The coast, blanketed with fog in the early morning, sees more action than the mainland. Fishermen are out at sea setting their reef-nets to catch salmon, locals wade in the water gathering kelp, and visitors wander the beaches in search of driftwood, sea glass, and other ocean treasures. The island’s bounty captivated Chef Blaine Wetzel, an alum of Copenhagen’s worldfamous Noma restaurant. In 2011, the Olympia, Washington-native took over the restaurant at the Willows Inn (willows-inn.com) and put Lummi on the national dining map. Wetzel’s 20-ish course tasting menu is so exquisite that some

hardcore foodies ferry over just for dinner. With a single seating per night, a meal is never rushed; service even pauses so diners can leave their tables to watch the sun set from the front deck. The menu at Willows Inn pays homage to local terroir, delivering a true taste of place. Ingredients are primarily foraged from land and sea, and what isn’t gets sourced from nearby Loganita Farm. Deceptively simple dishes, such as island berries with elderflowers and grilled geoduck clam, are plucked from local waters earlier that day and surprise guests with nuanced flavors. Reservations are, of course, in high demand, but guests of the inn receive priority and a stay is well worth the splurge. Beachside guesthouses and secluded cabins encourage guests to embrace island time with a good book and morning coffee on the deck. Cozy rooms on the main grounds of the Craftsman-style inn put guests just a few steps away from Wetzel’s breakfast spread, which includes farm fresh eggs and salmon smoked out back in the smoker. Wetzel’s cooking, like the island itself, is a reminder that sometimes the simple things bring us the most joy.
