Strawberry Basil Sorbet Basil adds a unique spin on this classic strawberry sorbet. CO U RT E SY M A R I A L I TC HY, TWO PE AS & T HE IR P OD

Ingredients 1 pound fresh strawberries, rinsed, hulled, and sliced ¾ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup freshly chopped basil 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice Method In a medium bowl, toss the strawberries with the sugar. Stir until all of the strawberries are coated. Cover and let stand for one hour, stirring every so often. Puree the strawberries and their liquid with the basil and lemon juice in a blender or food processor until smooth. Chill the mixture thoroughly, then freeze it in your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Grilled Rosemary and Garlic Salmon Ingredients 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ tablespoon olive oil, plus extra to brush on the grill 1 ½ teaspoon finely chopped rosemary leaves, about 2 small sprigs ½ teaspoon smoked sea salt 1 ½ pound filet of salmon, skin-on Method Fire up the grill to high heat, about 475–500° F. In a small dish, stir together the garlic, olive oil, rosemary, and salt. Place the salmon on a baking sheet, skin-side down, and rub the herb and oil mix over the fish. Brush the grill with olive oil and place the salmon on the grill, skin-side down. Grill for 15–17 minutes, until the thickest part is cooked through and begins to flake. Pair your filet with a thick-cut, crusty sourdough or an airy focaccia topped with olive oil, coarse salt, and fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or rosemary.

Toki Shiso Julep Ingredients 3 oz Toki whiskey (or your whiskey of choice) 4 shiso leaves 2 barspoons cane sugar Crushed ice Method Muddle sugar with 3 shiso leaves until macerated. Add 2 ounces of whiskey, stir, and add ½ cup of crushed ice. Top with 1 more ounce of whiskey, stir, and add more crushed ice. Garnish with a whole shiso leaf.

Add the cucumber slices, onion slices, and dill. Season with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. You can also chill for a couple of hours before serving to let the cucumbers marinate.

Herbal Stone Fruit Prosecco Sangria Ingredients 12 oz green Chartreuse 6 oz Atsby vermouth (or your vermouth of choice) 1 bottle chilled prosecco 4 sliced plums or pluots ½ cup sliced red grapes or gooseberries 4–6 kumquats (optional) 8–10 sprigs of fresh thyme Method Add Chartreuse, vermouth, fruit, and a few springs of thyme to a serving pitcher. Let sit for a few hours. When ready to serve, add prosecco. Serve over ice with a straw, and garnish with a fresh sprig of thyme.

In general, it’s best to avoid soils that come with added fertilizers, though you can add a sprinkle of liquid fish or kelp-based fertilizer when your plants need a boost. Once potted, place your herb babies where they will receive six to eight hours of sunlight, ideally near a west- or southfacing window.

Pantone’s two colors of the year bring sunshine and steadiness to your world. BY AMAN DA Z URITA

What if a year could be condensed into a color? That’s the question the Pantone Color Institute asks itself and announces each December after careful examination of tinted influences and trends in everything from fashion and travel to technology and sports. Perhaps because it’s impossible to anticipate if 2021 will bring more clouds than sunshine, the color authority chose two shades that convey both confident brilliance and a grounding foundation: Illuminating (a cheerful yellow) and Ultimate Gray. “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. It’s only the second time in the 22-year history of the Color of the Year that two colors have been chosen.

designer Maria Killam notes that shades of gray have been popular in interiors for years, providing a crisp, unobtrusive backdrop that allows brighter accents to shine. “Lots of people already have a lot of gray in their homes,” she says. “And yellow is really the best color to bring gray to life. We all need yellow, the joy and happiness and optimism that yellow brings.”

ing room walls to look like a lemon or swap your brown couch for gray? Not necessarily. One of the easiest ways to update your home with the times is to choose larger furniture investments and wall treatments that feel timeless, then swap in accent pieces that can be changed out as trends evolve. Killam also advises using the two Pantone shades more as suggestions than statutes. “Illuminating is a clean yellow, but it doesn’t tend to be the shade most people decorate with,” she says. “More often with yellow, we’ve been seeing muted tones of mustard and cognac. With gray, you can choose a shade based on the undertone of violet, green, or blue.”

neutral tones, the color creates a rock-solid foundation to layer on top of, with pops of Illuminating yellow accessories or art adding a visually compelling juxtaposition. For instance, the SimCam 1S indoor camera swivels 360 degrees and employs facial recognition, and the Arlo Ultra views the outdoor scene in Ultra High Definition with automatic zooming and color night vision. Seattle-based Wyze has entered

the scene with durable, connected cameras and voice-activated light bulbs at Ikea prices. Speaking of Ikea, the Swedish giant is rolling out its own Home Smart line, including lights and window shades. When you do start leaving the house again, avoid petseparation anxiety with the Furbo Dog Camera, which provides twoway audio and releases treats on your command.

FOR THE PAST THREE DECADES, A PORTION

of every Windermere agent’s commission has been donated to the Windermere Foundation. Over the years, this has cumulatively led to over $43 million raised and 500-plus organizations supported. When folks join Windermere’s Capitol Hill team in Seattle, which currently includes 60 active agents, they agree to donate an additional .03 percent of gross commission from every closing. Erin Porter, marketing coordinator for Windermere Real Estate Capitol Hill, emphasizes that her team tries to keep the focus local. Last year, they donated to 22 organizations, with contributions ranging from $600 to $4,000, for a total of $45,350. The real estate entity, perhaps naturally, chooses to support a great number of

housing organizations. “Everyone deserves a house, no matter what,” Porter says. She deems it “a basic human right.” A percentage of these agents’ donations supports a few local elementary schools, too. Porter expresses disappointment that, due to the pandemic, the hands-on portion of Windermere’s company-wide Community Service Day had to be canceled in 2020. It is “one of the best days of the year,” she says. During this normally annual event, all Windermere offices shut down, and staff and agents dedicate the day of work to those in need—helping out at local senior centers, playgrounds, food banks, or other community-based organizations. A couple years back, Porter and her colleagues provided dressers and beds for a

Mary’s Place house, located a block from their Capitol Hill office. (Since 1999, Mary’s Place has helped hundreds of women and families transition out of homelessness and into more safe, stable living situations.) Later on, the Windermere Capitol Hill employees returned to help landscape the home’s yard and to build a fence. Community Service Day always proves both fun and productive. “We can get a lot done with 50 people in one day,” Porter says. Porter feels fortunate that donating money and chipping in with projects is “never even a question” among her colleagues. “When you’re successful,” she says, “you want to bring people up with you.” Learn more about the Windermere Foundation at windermerefoundation.com. RVs and camper vans are experiencing a renaissance. Here are some tips if you want to get in on the action. IF YOU DIDN’T BUY AN AIRSTREAM as a pandemic splurge, have no fear. There is now a booming rental marketplace online at Outdoorsy, where you can find a loaner close to home or close to your intended destination. Price, availability, and minimum reservation length can vary widely

given this open marketplace. GoCamp curates a vetted selection of peer-topeer rentals with pickups in Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Seattle. WANT THAT INSTAGRAM-PERFECT 1984 VOLKSWAGEN VANAGON? Prepare to drive a janky stick shift and fret about possible roadside repair. Newer models like Mercedez-Benz Sprinter camper vans and Winnebago Ekko RVs may be less photogenic but are more reliable. Be prepared for a wide turn radius and height restrictions—smaller is better to reach more scenic spots, so best to avoid

Class A models that run nearly as big as tour buses. If you own a vehicle with decent horsepower, check the tow rating: you may be able to haul a travel trailer. That option keeps driving and sleeping in separate compartments. All that said, the tricked-out campervan has quickly become the West Coast’s standard conveyance in any scenic destination, with massive RVs largely relegated to Midwestern tourist status. FOR FIRST-TIME RV AND CAMPERVAN DRIVERS, established rentals are a great bet for customer service that will hold your hand through every

process, from how to connect to the hookup at your RV site to what to do with your wastewater. Peace Vans in Seattle, Wandervans in Portland, Lost Campers in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and Trekker Vans in San Francisco are all reliable places to start. FINALLY, DON’T FORGET TO BOOK YOUR CAMPSITES—THEY GO FAST. Otherwise, you may find yourself “boondocking”—that is, sleeping on the side of a road with no connection to water and electricity. Local regulations on overnight parking vary; needless to say, prepare to pack out and leave no trace.
