ADVICE
Security Detail
Assess some of the biggest threats to home security, and sleep better knowing that you're safe.
DO YOU HAVE A SECURITY SYSTEM?
WOOF, WOOF, MEOW
Look for training centers where Fido can learn some basic security responses (including when not to respond to threats). More of a cat person? Mittens won’t help you, but you can program the sound of a barking dog to some home assistant devices. (Mittens will love that!)

LOOK AROUND
Check your yard for access points and trees close to second-floor windows. Install exterior lighting near all entries and paths, and look into landscaping techniques that stymie potential intruders.

I INSTALLED A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM MYSELF
Anything wireless can be exploited by hackers. Ensure you have a good password, enable two-factor authentication, and make sure the system you use has end-to-end encryption, so no one can spy on you.
I HAVE A PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED SYSTEM
Find out if you have the most up-to-date products, like medical alerts for the elderly and people with mobility challenges.
DO YOU WORK FROM HOME? HOW ABOUT THE SMOKE DETECTOR BATTERIES?
NO
YES
BUT I HAVE LOTS OF DEVICES! A big risk is losing your device, so make sure to keep it secure with a lock screen and a strong password. Keep your router up to date, and of course, don’t share or download information on unsecured networks—look for the lock symbol next to the url.
24 HR
SECURE YOUR ROUTER, keep your software and operating systems up to date, and set your screen to time out. A VPN will keep your data safe by creating an encrypted network connection. Ensure that any private documents (physical and digital) are securely stored.

NOW WHERE ARE THOSE ENERGIZERS…? EXTRA TIP
Make sure your security sign is visible. This is a surprisingly big deterrent for criminals looking for homes to access.
Consider getting your smoke detectors hardwired—this is a law for new construction in some states. Hardwired alarms need to be replaced every 10 years.
YES
I CHANGE THEM EVERY EQUINOX.
Consider a home sprinkler system (especially if you are building a new home). In the event of a fire, water damage will be easier to fix than smoke or fire damage.
