his season, there’s even more reason to cheer on the hard-charging Seattle Seahawks. As the Official Real Estate Company of the Seattle Seahawks, Windermere Real Estate and the Windermere Foundation is donating $100 for every Seahawks home game tackle during the 2017 season. The anchor of the new collaboration is the impactful #tacklehomelessness campaign, which benefits Seattle’s YouthCare. The non-profit has been providing services to support homeless youth for more than 40 years. Initiated during the 2016 NFL season, the #tacklehomelessness campaign raised $35,000, and Windermere is looking forward to raising more money this year. As such, the Seahawks hard-earned tackles are inspiring personal success stories which help define the power of philanthropy.
DANA’S STORY Dana is 20 years old and has been living on the streets since she was 14 or 15. At first, she was wary of accessing dropin and other services due to family and personal trauma. Additionally, various systems had failed to support her. Once she learned that she was able to enroll in case management through YouthCare’s outreach services, she agreed to work with YouthCare’s Street Outreach Case Manager, Sam. Through Sam’s coaching and support, Dana has since completed a housing assessment and is on the waitlist for 11

available housing. She can now envision herself off the streets, and she has Sam and YouthCare’s Outreach Team to walk that road beside her and offer the support she needs along the way.
LESLIE’S STORY Wet and cold from an early spring rainstorm, Leslie walked in the front door of YouthCare’s James W. Ray Orion Center and asked for help. She had lived in Seattle her entire life, moving between her mother’s apartment and foster care, always hoping always to be able to stay in one place for longer than a month. She had recently turned 18, and the friend’s couch she had been sleeping on was no longer available. Her education had been patched together as she’d shuffled between schools, not connecting with any specific teacher—and she wanted to achieve her GED. She told the Orion Community Resource Specialist that she had met a YouthCare Outreach team member on the streets, so she visited YouthCare to learn how they can help. Today, Leslie has the support needed to carve out a new life path.

“TIME IS THE LEAST THING WE HAVE OF.” In today’s increasingly fast-paced world, Ernest Hemingway’s celebrated words are spot on. Spending time in the storied little town of Sun Valley was fuel for Hemingway’s soul, and inspiration to finish For Whom the Bell Tolls. He sought solace among Sun Valley’s slopes in 1939, around the same time such Hollywood trailblazers as Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, and Clark Gable became privy to its charming alpine allure. Today, a visit to Sun Valley and Ketchum remains equally indelible and inspiring. Its funky downtown celebrates a wild west past, while a closeknit community of passionate locals remains the pulse of this alpine retreat. So whether visiting this fall or winter, be prepared to be smitten by America’s first ski resort. You just may be hunting for a second mountain home before too long. 19

THE ADVENTURER Idaho, with its natural playground of the Pioneer, Smokey, Sawtooth, and Soldier mountain ranges, is the mother lode for any outdoor maverick. And Sun Valley’s Bald and Dollar Mountains have been attracting top athletes and aspiring newbies since the 1940s. Come fall, mountain biking, hiking, and fishing are the demands of the day, while winter is defined by powder stashes at Sun Valley Resort, fat biking, and a playful Nordic trail system. MOUNTAIN BIKING + FAT BIKING Ketchum’s neighboring 400-miles of single-track may arguably rival that of Crested Butte, Colorado. During fall, a two-wheeled need for speed is the obsession of Sun Valley locals. Access rowdy, lift-served downhill terrain on Bald Mountain, or tackle Adams Gulch Loop for flowy, unforgettable terrain. If new to the sport, the town has a bike park and private guides. When winter hits, cycling doesn’t end. Fat biking on snow is the latest alpine obsession for adrenaline junkies. Last winter new fat bike trails were added to Sun Valley’s Nordic system, which winds through the Trail Creek River—all with postcard-perfect views of Bald and Dollar Mountains. HIKING Put boot to trail and explore the Sawtooths. There’s no better time than leaf-peeping season to navigate Sun Valley’s alpine playground. From short beginner hikes accessed in the heart of town to out-andback day treks that reach 10,000-foot summits and pristine lakes, a walkabout takes on all new meaning here. If looking for a guided trip or expert peak bagging, Sturtevant’s Sun Valley Mountain Guides are the go-to for backcountry bliss. FISHING Sun Valley is an angler’s paradise year-round, with gold-medal trout streams that rival most any in the west. Fly-fish the Brown Drake hatch on Silver Creek, the headwaters of the Salmon, or hit the Big Woods River, which snakes through the heart of town. ALPINE SKIING Expect a more laid-back vibe here compared to Sun Valley’s southern ski town neighbors like Aspen and Vail. Though its varied terrain has been an aggressive training ground for skiing and snowboarding’s top athletes, including freeskier Lexi Dupont, snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington, and the first woman to win a gold medal in the winter Olympics, Gretchen Fraser. New in 2016, Sun Valley Resort and the United States Forest Service launched the Healthy Forests Initiative, which added 21 acres of gladed skiing on Bald Mountain. So whether on the hunt for fresh corduroy or the steep and deep, ski culture is the town’s heart and soul.

THE FAMILY LOWDOWN ON LODGING Bridging past and present with a recent facelift, a stay or evening spent at Sun Valley Lodge is a must. Parents should book a well-deserved reboot at The Spa at Sun Valley, with 15 treatment rooms, a top-of-the-line fitness center, and sleek yoga center. And town’s new kid on the block is the hip, boutique Limelight Hotel. Think shuffleboard and gourmet pizzas in the lounge, with a hopping après ski scene that’s fun for all ages. And its Four Mountain Sports makes gearing up a cinch. KID’S SKI SCHOOL Kids can zip down ski adventure trails on Dollar Mountain—with jumps, bumps, and hairpin turns— groomed just for them. Tweens and teens tackle Dollar Mountain’s Terrain Park, with a 22-foot superpipe plus rails, jumps, and boxes for perfecting freestyle and snowboard tricks. And for the little rippers, Sun Valley’s SnowSports School is one of the most applauded ski schools in the nation. MOUNTAIN MAVERICKS Want more family-friendly fun? Snowshoeing, tubing, ice-skating and simply relaxing by the fire with s’mores and hot chocolate are all in a day’s play. Alternatively, book a sleigh ride to a family dinner at the Trail Creek Cabin. Leave from the Sun Valley Inn and pass the Hemingway Memorial along scenic, snow-packed trails. Chef Adam Fisher’s seasonally inspired menu includes his signature Hagerman Valley Idaho Ruby Trout.
