Welcome to Issue #3 of Windlight Magazine! We have grown quite rapidly in such a short time and I would like to first thank all of our readers, advertisers, supporters, and of course my awesome contributors! The featured article in this issue is on Paradise Lost: The Movie, which was directed and produced by Canary Beck. Machinima like the real life movies they resemble, involve creativity and technical expertise, especially when creating machinima in Second Life, as one has to deal with lag, a sometimes unstable platform, and rezzing issues. Paradise Lost: The Movie is an example of Second Life at its creative best. As the summer bright sun starts to fade for the shadows of Fall, do not suffer from the Fall blues, tap into your creative energy. Build, draw, paint, explore, snap photographs, whatever that comes to your creative self, whether in Second Life or in real life. My editorial photo for this issue was taken at a special hurricane themed event at St. John’s New Orleans. While this party was a fun event in Second Life, it was also a reminder of the real life Hurricane Katrina, which the 10th anniversary of this tragedy was recently remembered. Remember to enjoy life and to tell those that are close to you in either life, whether real or Second, that you appreciate them and love them each and every day. Enjoy the issue!

On August 8, 2015, Canary Beck, Director of The Second Life Production of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, made the following announcement on her very popular blog:

before and after their expulsion from Eden through the medium of dance.

Paradise Lost the play had now become a movie! Inara has summarized Paradise Lost in the following feature story for those of you who are not familiar with the ins and outs of how Paradise Lost was created in Second Life:

I’d been privileged to witness much of the preparations for the production, and had been fortune enough to sit down and discuss the technical aspects involved with Canary and Harvey, as such I don’t intend to dwell on them too much here; however, with the indulgence of my editor, I’ll leave a link to that conversation for those interested.

Performed by the Basilique Performing Arts Company, Paradise Lost: was the creative child of director Canary Beck, given life and form “I am so excited to announce through technical skills of Harvey something that has been in the works Crabsticks. In 2014 one of the most challenging performance art productions ever staged in Second Life was premièred.

As noted, Paradise Lost: brought together the 12 (or 10, depending on your preferred edition) books of Paradise Lost: The Story of Adam and Milton’s poem with the fourteen Eve’s Original Sin, married John major and minor movements of Milton’s (1608–1674) 10,000 line Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor, as blank verse of Paradise Lost with the completed after his death by Franz Süßmayr completion of Mozart’s Xaver Süßmayr (hence it’s full title). Requiem Mass in D minor, to tell This in itself was a piece of creative Milton’s story of Adam and Eve genius; until watching a performance, 26

it would never have occurred to me how precisely the Requiem frames the poem. For the production, both poem and Requiem were divided into three acts:  Act One: the fall of Satan, the creation of the heavens and the Earth, the creatures of the Earth, Adam, and from Adam, Eve. Featuring Introitus: Requiem, Kyrie Eleison, Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum  Act Two: Satan crowned by the hosts of hell, the corruption of Eve, the first sin and expulsion from Eden. Featuring Rex Tremendae, Recordare, Confutatis and Lacrimosa  Act Three: the war between the hosts of heaven and hell; Adam and Eve’s despair; Michael’s revelation to Adam of future events leading up to man’s redemption to God through Christ. Adam and Eve venture forth into the world with their baby sons Featuring Domine Jesu, Hostias, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Lux Aeterna.

The scripting also extended to the audience, who were as mentioned, very much a part of the overall production. This was achieved through one of the most creative uses of the Restrained Love (RLV) API I’ve ever witnessed. Tickets to performances were sold with a special avatar set created and by Sian Pearl. Audience member were asked to attend performances wearing these avatars.

Initially appearing as a silver-white angel, these avatars could change to that of a red demon of hell under scripted control and in time to the unfolding events on the stages of Eden and Hell, with the scripting additionally allowing them to become to choreographed chorus for either Heaven or Hell, adding further depth to the audience’s involvement in a These acts were played out over three performance. stages: hell to the right of the This flair for creative presentation was audience, Eden to the left, and the world beyond the gates of Eden to the evident throughout the production. Then there was the selection of the music which preceded each performance. This drew on the inestimable talent of Bear McCreary, and the use of his The Shape of Things to Come an ideal choice, given the nature of the production.

Patristic age and its view of women. Something which is again entirely appropriate, given the subject matter within the production. Given the sheer length of Milton’s poem, Paradise Lost: did have to foreshorten certain aspects of the work to both fit the time frame of two hours and the movements of the Requiem. But remains to the producers’ credit that nothing of substance was lost from the story in doing so.

All told, Paradise Lost: was truly - as I stated in my original review, from which this recollection has been drawn - a genuine masterpiece of performance art in Second life. AN INSIDE LOOK AT ENZO CHAMPAGNE WRITER: EMMA PORTILO PHOTOGRAPHY: ENZO CHAMPAGNE

47

The photographer we are bringing focus to this month is a man who has not only a successful photography business, but is also an artist that creates designs of grandeur that he sells under the brand of Champagne! Sparkling Couture. His eye for detail, attention to quality, and uncanny knack for creative ingenuity makes his work special. And now, without further ado, we uncover the man that is Enzo Champagne. WM: You've been in SL for well over seven years now, what brought you to SL to begin with? Enzo: One of my RL customers, a famous brand, was planning an event on Second Life. I heard of SL before by television, but I didn't know at all what SL was, so I just logged in and discovered an amazing world! At first I was lost in but I'm still there now lol

and melding of various pieces into a terrific and beautiful photograph is very, very well done! How do you feel about your photography being referred to as artwork? Enzo: Honestly I'm not sure it's referred to as Artwork, I'm glad you can think that! Nevertheless I just play with my sensitive feelings to make a beautiful work as I can, lol, and you have a lot of talents like Skip, Harbor Galaxy, Asia, Magissa, Astralia, Pam...and so many more.

WM: An image that is very special to the owner of Windlight Magazine and this writer is one that was s elected by Linden Labs to promote their Valentine's Day event. It is special to us because we are both in it and it is our wedding photo! How did you feel when we asked permission to enter it and then when it was selected? WM: Did you know you were going to Enzo: It was an honor to work for you, set your mind to opening a business I like to do couple pictures. To for creating clothing and doing express romantic, love, desire, or photography? sex! For you it was a pure love, a Enzo: Well, I did not have the chance wedding souvenir. I'm not really to get my own brand in RL, so SL gave surprised that you wanted to enter me the opportunity to express myself with this picture in the LL in fashion then with photography. It's contest cause it was representing this really a fabulous platform for in temporal love, to my part. But for creativity! sure I was honored they chose it, we never know exactly what people WM: Your photography work is often expect when they organize a referred to as artwork. The blending contest...I just had a big smile for 48

you :) WM: How do you keep the creativity flowing? Enzo: Good question, I don't think there is a technical method. It's just something inside you, a sensitive spirit. WM: Do you ever experience a creativity block? If so, how do you overcome it? Enzo: Just breathe, enrich yourself, have an open mind, and be aware of all sorts of things then you can purpose your OWN vision. WM: Do you have any special techniques or training that you feel helps you with your work? Enzo: Well I learn all alone . Was same with PSD...just experiment first, you have nothing to lose, just test things! Also, now there are a lot of tutorials on YouTube that can help if you have difficulties doing something, for example how to remove a green background. WM: Champagne Sparkling Fashion! Your business, a long-running clothing line business that has evolved as technology has evolved and has come from system clothing to prims to mesh. Describe for us the art that is your clothing line, what type of clothing do you

create? Enzo: CHAMPAGNE! Sparkling Couture is known for the national costumes that I made for different pageants. But at first, it reflects a celebration part, it can be a celebration of women like goddesses, pride for men to express their fantasy part, but always with a touch of glitter! WM: How do you come up with the ideas for the outfits you produce? Enzo: Mainly I feel something that I want to do, then I do research on a theme and I inspire myself from all of the pictures I've collected to mix in my spirit and give my own version of this theme. WM: Has it been difficult keeping up with the changes in technology as they have come about? Enzo: When you have a big technical change your first reaction is "omg how I will do it now without knowing how it works," but at least you can just take it like a new opportunity to improve your creativity, to make it better, a chance to learn a new tool, and it's always good to change. We need to embrace the future and not stay like an old grandmother who grumbles the past was better. Lol Take it like a challenge!

WM: What was the most welcome change in technology that you have experienced while producing your clothing line? Enzo: Definitely mesh!

available, we will answer you for sure. Windlight Magazine thanks Enzo for his time and for sharing a bit about himself with us. WM

WM: What is the most welcome change in photography tools in SL, if any, that you have utilized? Enzo: I would say shadows lights for photography. WM: What is the one thing you would desire most to have improved about SL right now? Enzo: About fashion, when you still use some prims I would say the number of prims linked, you can create so many more beautiful things with much more prims linked. About photography, taking high resolution pictures without crashing! I have to use different viewers sometimes just to take one picture, that's crazy. WM: What do you do for fun in SL? Enzo: For fun I like to go to fashion shows, do some shopping, I love gatcha hunts, going to parties, laughing with friends or just have a nice date if I'm lucky to have one! lol WM: If someone is interested in custom work or having a photo taken how do they go about doing so? Enzo: Just send me a notecard, or to my manager Carilynn OHare if I'm not 54

Do you enjoy taking and appreciating photos in Second Life? Do you like to explore visually interesting sims? Do you enjoy a challenge and want to improve your own pictures, learn from others, or even help others improve their photography skills? Then check out Photohunt, a Second Life game in which participants, along with their fellow Photohunters, take their best SL snapshot that embodies the theme or landmark provided by a moderator within the 60 minute time limit.

Bear Silvershade to ask them a few questions about Photohunt. I was advised Photohunt and Haiku Speed Build were launched at the same time as part of the Virtual Artists Alliance. The founder of the group was Cyanide Seelowe and Dave sort of accepted management of the group and has done a great job taking care of the technicalities of running it for years. Several of the other long time participants including Bear also take turns hosting and helping out.

STEPPING INTO PARADISE WITH CANARY BECK WRITER: JOHN PHOTOGRAPHY: CANARY BECK

Canary Beck has been an active Second Life resident since 2007. She is an SL blogger, artist, creator, merchant, sim owner, researcher, filmmaker and performing artist. Offline she works as a London-based internet marketing consultant and business owner. WM: You are contributing tremendously to Second Life in the form of blogging, tutorials, advice, your sim Basilique, and of course Paradise Lost - The Movie. How did you first get involved with your many roles in Second Life? Canary Beck: For me, every new project or role begins from a conversation with an inspiring person. Between us we might spark an idea - and pretty soon the discussion takes a life of it’s own. I wouldn’t say I’m entirely a self-starter. Rather, I enjoy to try new things and take on new challenges, and these things are often catalyzed by other people. That’s what happened with the blog, Basilique, all of the other writing I do, my performance art, and now my movie. It all starts with a conversation between a very small group of open-minded, smart, and creative people, and then it just blooms from there. WM: Basilique is a great sim and was 112

recently one of the in world Linden Labs chosen “Meet the Lindens” meeting spots. How did you come up with the theme of Basilique? What are your goals with the sim? Canary Beck: I love Italy and travelled there many times - for weekend stays, longer holidays and road trips. I’ve been to all of the major cities, including Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan, Naples, Verona, Bologna - you name the place, I’ve probably travelled through it. I most recently visited Lake Como, and spent a week ferrying across the lake from town to town. It was fantastic. I couldn’t imagine a more relaxingly natural place to live. When I had the opportunity to decorate a region in Second Life, I jumped at the chance to simulate the look and feel of the towns that dot the northern lakes of Italy. The piazzas, the shops, the alleyways, the churches, and even some of the more modern clubs and bars I went to there. As we built it, piece by piece, I began to imagine a history, interwoven with the events that transpired in the region since the Crusades. There’s still much of that influence at Basilique, with older aspects of the town being layered over with the newer structures, just as we see in modern Italian towns today. My goals for the region is for it to become a community that hosts thoughtful conversations about thought-provoking ideas,

And one last comment, just for the heck of it, check for typos. :) The next topic I am going to get into is art reselling, which your bio card is also very important for. I have found some artists sensitive about this and I really do not understand that. First of all, if you sell it transfer then it clearly can either be gifted or exchanged for money. If you sell it no copy, like most, then you have control of how many are sold. Isn't this a big part of what is so cool about GOTCHAS? This creates a nice mimic of real life art selling. For so many things in SL I am grateful for items being sold with Copy/Mod permissions, like my house in case I wreck it so I can re-rezz it. But art should be more unique in how it's used and exchanged, like RL.

specifically negotiating the purchase and resale. A brokerage can offer a service that finds art for offices and homes to enhance the image of their space; like an interior designer. Art brokers/dealers must be conscious of the art market to maintain their sales and reputation. This involves visiting galleries shows, receptions, openings, and maintaining good relations with gallery curators and artists. This is not much different from what a curator does, except that the dealer may purchase art works without already having a buyer, then displaying them in a gallery or shop for sale. The price is naturally marked up, taking into consideration their time and efforts in procuring and promoting. This is interesting food for thought and the opening of other potential avenues for art marketing that would increase the health and fun of the market for art in SL.

This creates the potential, yet Shakti Adored untapped, for more ways to sell art. SL Gallerista WM Even though the artist isn't making every penny on the purchases of art, it is all still very good for the artist. In RL, besides curators, there are brokers and dealers. An art dealer is a person or company that buys and sells works of art, reselling them in their galleries or directly to collectors. A broker does the same job except that they represent a buyer or a seller, 133
