Welcome to your 2023 Fall Activity Guide! As the vibrant colors of summer slowly give way to the enchanting hues of autumn, I am delighted to announce the arrival of our much-anticipated Fall Activity Guide for Windsor Parks, Recreation and Culture! With the changing season, we have prepared an array of exciting programs and events that promise to add warmth and excitement to your days.

Fitness and Wellness: Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle is of utmost importance to us, which is why we have curated a diverse set of fitness classes suitable for all ages and fitness levels. From energetic group workouts to mindful yoga sessions amidst the fall foliage, we have something for everyone. Our certified instructors and trainers are dedicated to guiding you on your wellness journey.

Art and Creativity: For the artistically inclined among you, we are thrilled to present a series of creative workshops and classes. Unleash your imagination and learn new skills in painting, pottery and much more.

Nature Walks and Outdoor Activities: The autumn season provides the perfect backdrop for exploring the beauty of our parks and open spaces. Join our Flock Watchers Birding Club led by knowledgeable guides and discover the hidden gems of Windsor’s natural wonders.

Family Fun: We believe in cherishing moments with loved ones, and this fall, we have organized a variety of family-oriented events. From Nights at the Museum, Twilight Tours of Lakeview Cemetery to the Farmer’s Market and Halloween Carnival, these events will create memories that you and your family will cherish.

Community Recreation Center

The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Department welcomes you to our 85,000-square-foot Windsor Community Recreation Center. The Windsor CRC features two gymnasiums, fitness rooms, an elevated walking track, and indoor aquatic facility, in addition to a variety of other rooms and amenities.

Indoor Aquatic Center

Our indoor aquatic facility serves as the Windsor CRC's centerpiece, featuring three lap lanes, a zero-depth entry pool with play feature, a lazy river, water slide and a 23-person hot tub! The full Aquatics section begins on page 34.

Fitness Facilities

An auxiliary gym with an elevated walking and jogging track connects our 3,500-square-foot fitness space. Take advantage of our cutting-edge fitness rooms on the first and second floors, featuring Cybex cardiovascular and weight equipment. The full Fitness section begins on page 60.

Childcare

Need a place for your child ages 18 months to 9 years old* to go during your Community Recreation Center visit? We’ve got you covered. Drop in to utilize our childcare services Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 4:307:00 p.m., and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. - Noon.

*Effective Monday, August 28, children ages 1 to 9 years old can utilize our childcare services for a maximum time allowance of 90 minutes per visit.

EVENTS

Vintage Base Ball Game

Celebrate the 5th annual Harvest Festival Classic with a double header! Join the Colorado Vintage Base Ball Association and the Windsor Sugar Tramps Base Ball Club for an afternoon of America’s favorite pastime. We are ready to play ball according to 1864 rules, so don’t overrun the bases and yes, you can catch a ball on a bounce!

The double header will begin with the Windsor Sugar Tramps playing the Star Base Ball Club of the Colorado Territory. Anyone over the age of 16 is welcome to join the Sugar Tramps for this match. Please sign up in advance by emailing mwebster@ windsorgov.com. All players in the first match will receive a uniform to wear during the match and a t-shirt to take home.

The second game will be a 5-inning scrimmage where all ages and abilities are welcome to join in a pickup style match. Everyone will be given a quick rundown of the rules and will be guided through a friendly base ball game.

Night at the Museum: Mystery on Ice

Have you ever wanted to play a mystery game like Clue in real life? Put on your detective hat and gather your team to discover the culprit during this interactive night at the museum.

Do you have what it takes to become a detective and solve a whodunit inspired by Windsor’s past? Go back in time 100 years to solve a mystery frozen in time. When a local ice delivery man fails to make his deliveries, Windsor authorities send for a team of detectives to track down the wayward man. Did he disappear... or is he just giving everyone the cold shoulder? And what does his disappearance have to do with the rumors of rum smuggling that have been swirling around town? Don’t get cold feet it’s up to you, Northern Colorado’s finest detective team, to crack the case!

Gather your team of 2-6 people for this exciting evening where you will interview key witnesses, explore the museum for clues after dark, and guess who the main suspect is. Teams who guess correctly will be entered to win a prize! Don’t have a team? Don’t worry! Email Katherine Mercier at kmercier@windsorgov.com to be placed on a team. The 4:00 p.m. time slot is a family-friendly mystery game. The 7:00 p.m. time slot is for ages 16+ only and will feature imagery and stories more appropriate for older youths and adults. Science by Night

Join the Town of Windsor Museums for an all-new family evening program! Come to Science by Night with your family and friends at the museum. Once we go to sleep, what creatures come out to play? Bring family or a group of friends to explore the nocturnal animals of Northern Colorado through games, projects and experiments that you can do together! Led by the Town of Windsor Museums’ nature educators, participants will explore the outdoors as night falls and discover what birds, bugs, and bats we can find once the sun goes down. Enjoy science with the people you love in this brand-new all-ages night of fun.

The $20 fee for groups of 2-6 people includes all supplies and fun! All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Twilight Tours of Lakeview Cemetery

Embark on an evening tour of Windsor’s historic Lakeview Cemetery with a costumed tour guide from the Town of Windsor Museums. Guided by the light of a flickering lantern, discover unusual and incredible stories of early Windsor residents who are buried in the cemetery. This year, we’ll discover some new stories along with some beloved classics. From a Canadian fur trapper with a 1.5 story outhouse to a woman with a Colorado Supreme Court case that still shapes Colorado law today, you’ll laugh, cry and be amazed at their incredible tales. These tours are familyfriendly for kids 8+, but due to potential chilly temperatures the tours that begin at 5:30 p.m. are highly recommended for families.

Halloween Carnival

The Halloween Carnival returns! Visit the Windsor History Museum for a fun day of trick-or-treating. The lawn in front of the museum will be transformed into a spooky extravaganza with festive fall decorations, performers, face painting and a variety of local vendors with free candy! This event is free and no registration is required. Windsor Wonderland

Santa arrives on the Great Western Railway Train at 4:30 p.m.! After his arrival, Santa and Town of Windsor Mayor, Paul Rennemeyer, will kick off this year’s event with the annual Tree Lighting ceremony. Transforming the Windsor History Museum into a wonderland of lights and fun! Santa will be available for complimentary professional pictures, must be in line by 7:30 p.m.

Kids’ Nite Out

Kids’ Nite Out Across America (KNO) is an independent youth activity program held weekly at the Windsor Community Recreation Center. KNO provides a fun, safe, active environment for every participant. A variety of games and activities are offered, such as swimming, dancing to a DJ, sports tournaments, arts and crafts and more! Nationally background-checked, attentive and energetic staff monitor all areas. KNO maintains a 1:25 staff-participant ratio, and a local police officer is on duty at each event to ensure the safety of all participants. Parents must bring their child into the facility upon arrival, and participants cannot leave until a parent or authorized guardian comes into the building for pick up.

Admission is $15 per person. Dinner vouchers are also available for purchase for $10. This includes pizza and a drink or sub sandwich, chips and a drink.

Windsor History Museum

Unlock Windsor’s past at the Windsor History Museum! Explore what life was like in early Windsor at the 1882 Train Depot, caboose, schoolhouse, farmhouse, beet shack, and chapel. Learn about Morse code, conduct a lesson in the schoolhouse, and experience what it was like to live in a two-room beet shack. Discover what makes Windsor unique at the Windsor History Museum!

Guided Tours of Windsor History Museum

Do you have a group that would be interested in touring the Windsor History Museum? Tours of the museum are offered free of charge for groups of four or more! Tours last 45 minutes to 1 hour and visit the different buildings at the museum. Tours are led by experienced docents and can be customized to your group. Tours can also be conducted virtually for groups of any size over Zoom or Google Meet. Family Farm Tour

Join the Windsor-Severance Historical Society for this familyfriendly tour around the area to visit historic farms. Some of these farms have been working for over 100 years! The tour will begin at the Von Trotha-Firestien Farm at Bracewell, followed by a ride to the Historic Halfway Homestead, and then to the Tigges Farm Produce and Pumpkin Patch. Transportation and a meal are provided with registration.

Museum Homeschool Programs

Homeschool Day at the Museum

Are you going to school at home? This fall, the museum is offering two FREE Homeschool Days at the Museum packed with family-friendly learning and fun. Visit the museum anytime between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. for exciting activities connected to local and Colorado history! All activities are customized for Pre K – 12th grade students, so bring the whole family! No need to register in advance!

September – Germans from Russia: Immigration Stories: We’re exploring the stories, art, food and culture of the Germans from Russia who moved to Windsor in the early 1900s. Originally from Germany, but settling in Russia in the 1700s, these people came to northern Colorado in search of a new life. We’ll explore their stories through the sources in museum buildings, explore their foodways, create a piece of art inspired by their motifs and more as we explore the story of our community. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

November – Ute STEM Day: Using hands-on activities, we’ll make connections between the past and present as we discover how the Ute people have used science, technology, engineering, and math to survive and thrive in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Bring the entire family! Children must be accompanied by an adult. This day is based at the Art & Heritage Center.

Art & Heritage Center

Formerly Windsor’s Town Hall built in 1909, this historic building is now a hub for art, culture and history in Windsor. The Art & Heritage Center hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year, both from the museum’s collection and from outside organizations. The Art & Heritage Center is also the location of much of Windsor’s cultural programming.

A Sense of the Past: Exploring Nostalgia

September 8 – December 10

Certain things, such as an image, a scent or a song, can trigger bittersweet memories of the past. The Town of Windsor Museums’ ninth annual Community Art and Poetry Exhibition explores the connection between our senses and our memories. Join local artists and poets as they share their personal experiences and explore the little things that trigger the biggest memories.

An open house and awards reception will be held on Friday, September 8th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. View the art, enjoy snacks and meet the artists at this special reception. This event is free to attend; bring the whole family!

Experience captivating watercolor pencil art in this vibrant showcase of creativity and skill from local artists. Featuring the work of Windsor seniors, this exhibition demonstrates a unique artistic medium that combines drawing with painting.

Fluid Histories: Water and Windsor’s Past, Present, and Future

Gong Voyage

Our bodies are mostly water, and since sounds travel around four times faster in water than in the air, our bodies are excellent receptors and conductors of sound and vibration. Participants have attributed the following to sound healing: reduction of stress and stimulation of deep relaxation, lower blood pressure and relief from chronic pain. You will simply lie down, get comfortable, set your intention and let the gong meditate you. Kathy Dickson will play for an hour with no words spoken as you simply absorb the vibrations. Day trips are scheduled each month to various locations. With a few exceptions, most day trips will take place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walking Levels for Day Trips & Tours:

The following Walking Levels will be assigned to each Active Adult trip or tour to help you decide which trips and tours are suitable for you. Each level is based upon research done by staff. The Windsor Community Recreation Center reserves the right to change levels, if necessary, when additional information becomes available.

Easy

Minimal walking, primarily flat surfaces.

Moderate

To fully participate there may be leisurely walking over primarily even surfaces and some uneven surfaces; standing may be required and possibly a few stairs.

Difficult

To fully participate there may be extended periods of walking over even and uneven surfaces and some incline. There may be steps and extended periods of standing. Participants with physical limitations should take this into account.

Hiking

Stay fit by exploring the great outdoors. Trails will be easy to moderate in length and difficulty. Destinations include Rocky Mountain National Park, Poudre Canyon and the Horsetooth area (among others). Garden of the Gods Tour (Colorado Springs)

Join us on a vehicle tour of The Garden of the Gods. As the legend goes, one surveyor, in 1859, wanted to build a beer garden there, but another man said it was better suited “for the Gods to assemble.” He coined the name, and it stuck. The crazy rock formations you’ll see were created along a fault line and are as old as the mountains. Humans have been drawn to these rocks since ancient times. Native American artifacts dating back to 250 B.C. have been discovered in this area. But it was in the 1870s, during the gold rush and railroad time, the rocks hit the Western radar. The head of the Burlington Railroad bought the area for his summer home, but he left it relatively untouched and welcomed the public to enjoy it. We’ll make a stop in the gift shop and a local

It’s showtime! Elk Bugling (RMNP)

National Park. From mid-September through mid-October and sometimes into November, it is elk breeding season. During this time, visitors can see up to hundreds of elk at a time gather amidst the unbeatable Rocky Mountain scenery for an unforgettable sight. It’s common to hear males bugling through the crisp mornings just before dawn and tranquil evenings just before dusk. Visitors should listen for the distinct sounds of different bulls; each bull’s bugle is made up of a series of grunts, high-pitched squeals and “shouts.” Note: We’ll stop for dinner in Estes Park after the Elk bugling and before heading home.

Wildlife Sanctuary (Keenesburg)

The Sanctuary’s two primary missions involve rescuing and caring for animals - and educating people about the Captive Wildlife Crisis. To that end, they invite people who want to learn more about the work they do to visit the unique facility in person. However, the Sanctuary is not a Zoo and offers a completely different experience than what most people are used to. Their rescued animals live in large acreage open habitats and are never forced to remain front-and-center just so people can see them easier. Yet, the elevated walkway (which is more than 1.5 miles long) spans across numerous habitats and provides plenty of opportunities for their guests to see many of the rescued animals closer.

Windsor Ride Program

The Windsor Ride Program provides transportation assistance to Windsor residents (55+) who are unable to drive themselves or do not have alternate transportation. Individuals who do not meet the age criteria, but need ride assistance, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The Windsor Ride Program can be used for non-emergency medical appointments, shopping at local businesses, banks, grocery stores, post office, hardware stores, pharmacies, general stores and hair salons. In addition, rides are also provided to and from the Friendly Fork Café lunches at the Community Recreation Center. The below is a schedule of the days and times when appointments may be scheduled through the Windsor Ride Program. Please allow 45 minutes prior to your appointment time for pick-up and drive time for out-of-town rides, and 15 minutes for in-town rides. Call (970) 388-5140 to reserve a ride.

Windsor Dolphins Swim Team

Our recreation swim team is a fun and exciting opportunity to introduce young swimmers with limited experience to competitive swimming. The primary objective of Windsor Dolphins Swim Team is the development of skills and sportsmanship, while encouraging all participants to do their best and assuring each swimmer experiences some degree of success. Requirements: We recommend that participants complete at least a level 4 swim lesson class and that they can swim one full pool length of both freestyle and backstroke without stopping. We also recommend that swimmers familiarize themselves with butterfly and breaststroke as well. If participants are unable to complete these requirements, or if our coaches feel they are not ready, a full refund will be provided.

This level is for swimmers who are new to the water, will not put their face in the water, and can hold on to the side of the pool independently.

Tadpole

This level is for swimmers who will put their face in the water, can perform supported front and back float without apprehension and will explore the water freely without fear.

Froggie

This level is for swimmers who can front float with their face in the water without support, can back float for 5 seconds without support and can submerge and pick up objects in shallow water.

Sharks

AGES 6 - 12 YEARS

Level 1

This level is for swimmers who can roll from front to back without support, streamline front glide five feet without support and jump into shallow water without support.

Level 2

This level is for swimmers who can perform a front and back float, streamline on their front and back, and are able to do breaststroke legs.

Level 3

This level is for swimmers who can perform a front and back float independently, can jump into deep/shallow water and move to the side comfortably and can swim 10 yards elementary back stroke.

Level 4

This level is for swimmers who can swim 50 yards without stopping, flutter kick without a kickboard for 25 yards and are comfortable in deep water.

Level 5

This level is for swimmers who can swim 100 yards freestyle, can tread water continuously for at least 1 minute, and have been introduced to breaststroke and backstroke.

Level 6

This level is for swimmers who can swim a minimum of 2 laps without stopping and are efficient in all competition strokes including freestyle, backstroke, and introduction to the butterfly stroke.

Motorized permit holders can be scheduled on the lake on motorized days on a first come, first served basis. Daily and annual permit holders must call 970-674-3500 to request their time and day of the week to reserve a spot on the lake no earlier than Monday of that week. Motorized boating will not be allowed on the 4th of July. No jet skis allowed.

Kayak, canoe, paddle board, CORCL and aqua trike rentals are available at Windsor Lake. Lifejackets are required for all participants and will be provided. Anyone 18 years and under must have their legal guardian sign the waiver before participating.

Fishing is allowed on Windsor Lake year-round when ice is not present. Must have a valid fishing license. For information on rules and regulations or fishing licenses, call 1-800-244-5613 or visit wildlife.state.co.us

Windsor Lake is generally stocked with Yellow Perch Fingerling, Bluegill, Channel Catfish and Trout.

Night fishing is allowed from the south end of the parking lot on Highway 257 north to the inlet bridge of the lake only. Each fisherman must have a line in the water that is being attended.

Eastman Park River Experience

Are you ready for a splish-splash good time? Located off of 7th Street and Eastman Park Drive north of the playground, shelter, skatepark and soccer fields is a local river adventure unlike anything else in the Town of Windsor called the Eastman Park River Experience. The Eastman Park River Experience features a river-mile devoted to local kayaking, canoeing, tubing and water play.

This outdoor experience features a dedicated float launch and take out area, a scenic river plaza that provides river access for general water enjoyment, picturesque views of the Cache la Poudre River and Longs Peak and an amazing new hangout spot.

Rentals are available at the concessions building located by the bathrooms.

Join us for Pottery Wheel Throwing 1! This beginning wheelthrowing class is for students who have never used the potter’s wheel as well as students who are still developing their throwing skills. Participants will learn how to prep clay for wheel throwing as well as how to center, pull and push the clay on the wheel. Guided by a local professional pottery artist, students will practice making basic cylinder shapes such as mugs and bowls. Each class is structured for you to learn a technique that will be paired with a project, which means you are creating pieces on day one.

This class is especially fun for families, grandparent & grandchild day, girls’ day and great as a self-care activity.

One week before the class, participants log on to The Cottage Artisan website to select their piece(s). On the day of the class your instructor will have your selected piece(s) available and ready for you as well as provide guidance and creative tips. Fencing

This class focuses on the fundamental rules and skills of modern Olympic fencing. Students learn skills such as basic footwork and bladework with the foil, epee and saber, as well as the basic rules of play and safety requirements of the sport. Coach-led instruction is in groups as well as working with a partner. There is time for fencing bouts with each other in each class. Please wear clothing you can exercise comfortably in, including athletic shoes and long, loose pants. Bring your own equipment or equipment may be rented on a first come-first serve basis for $10 per month. Our tumbling classes provide the opportunity for athletes to learn new skills, build strength and have fun in a safe environment. We focus on floor tumbling skills with progressions, beginning with forward rolls, cartwheels, back/front walkover, up to back handsprings and tucks. Classes are divided by skill after the first class and athletes are given drills and instruction to grow at their own pace and potential. Athletes are required to wear comfortable athletic gear and have hair in a high ponytail for safety. Also, please bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Barre Above® is a full body workout with an emphasis on the lower body and core. A fusion of yoga, Pilates, strength training, and ballet, you’ll see improvements in your posture, balance, strength, and flexibility. Myofascial Release Workshop

When paired with a yoga practice, myofascial release is very effective in releasing muscular tension and soreness, increasing range of motion and working with scar tissue. This 2 hour-long workshop begins with an overview of the function and role of fascia. You will learn the goals of myofascial release and what to avoid. Dodgeball

There will be five Thursdays to come out and play the classic childhood game of dodgeball. Teams will consist of six players (three males/three females). Matches will last 45 minutes. You will play as many games as possible during that time and the team with most wins after 45 minutes will be declared the winner.

Basketball Boys and Girls Intermediate Basketball Tryouts

Coaches and players are needed for the upcoming intermediate basketball season.

Teams play in the 2023 Power-to-Play Sports Fall League. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays. Practices start in mid-September with games in October and November and a possible tournament in December. Teams are required to have 60 percent of its players reside in Windsor or in the Weld RE-4 School District boundaries. If there is enough interest to form new teams, or current teams need additional players, players will be called for tryouts on the below date. Players need to register to be invited to the free tryout.

Coaches interested in coaching an intermediate team will need to call (970) 674-3507 for details. Players interested in playing on a team for the upcoming season and are not currently on a team, will need to register on a show-of-interest list. If there is enough interest, by coaches and players, players will be invited to the fall tryout.

Winter Basketball Camp

Bruce Dick is one of the best motivators and shooting instructors in the game. His camps will improve the ability of basketball players regardless of their ability or age. His teams play an exciting style of basketball & are always among the top threepoint shooting and free-throw teams in Colorado. Both boys and girls are welcome.

CARA Basketball Skills Challenge

The CARA Basketball Skills Challenge is a FREE competition open to boys and girls ages 6-13 years old that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing, and shooting. Top scorers from each age group will advance to a sectional competition, and sectional winners will advance to the state championship.

Future Stars Fall Soccer Camp

This camp is just right for your child! Our qualified, energetic coaches provide a fun, engaging environment. All instruction will be provided by Andy Greene and other coaches from NorCo Rush. Whether a beginner or a seasoned player, all athletes will develop their skills and gain confidence! Cost is $100 and each camp includes a camp t-shirt.

SuperTots

Since 2002, SuperTots has engaged kids, ages 2 – 5, in physical activity in a noncompetitive environment that is safe and fun above all else. SuperTots knows kids are hardwired to learn through play. For that reason, we’ve designed an engaging, skill-building curriculum in which “tots” learn through a series of fun games. They will acquire athletic skills and fitness but also develop an interest and love of sports.

Parent Meetings

At the Parent Meeting, we will conduct Team Sideline training, our online schedule and team roster system. We will also discuss general sporting parental sporting etiquette and expectations. The sport-specific portion of the meeting covers season schedules, rules and more. All parents should plan to attend the meeting.

Days/Times for Virtual meeting are all TBD. Email will be sent out to parents once the season draws closer to starting.

Need a little help? Reduced Fee & Scholarship Programs

The Windsor Parks, Recreation & Culture Reduced Fee & Severance Youth Scholarship Programs are funded through generous donations from multiple sources including the Windsor Town Board and United Way of Weld County. Reduced fees are available for Town of Windsor residents and scholarships are available for Severance Youth residents both meeting qualification guidelines including proof of income and household size taken from the most recent IRS tax form and proof of residency taken from a property tax certification, utility bill or rental agreement. Unique Programs for Windsor Area Residents with Disabilities

Please call (970) 674-3515 for information on any UPWARD recreation program. The Town of Windsor offers a wheelchair accessible bus that can accommodate two wheelchairs. Qualified individuals with disabilities will be provided reasonable accommodations for all programs. Staff are responsible for participants during program hours only. Participants in wheelchairs or who require one to one attention will need to provide their own caregiver.

Join us as we venture to Highland Park Lanes in Greeley for noncompetitive, but hilariously fun bowling that works on basic skills, good sportsmanship, social interaction, and fun. All skill levels are welcome; adaptable to all. The price includes two games, shoe rental, and transportation from the CRC to the bowling alley and back.

Walk to the Park

Time to get moving! We will walk from the CRC to the park, a few blocks away, in the New Windsor neighborhood. While at the park, participants can swing and play on the equipment. Have you been out to Treasure Island Demonstration Garden? South of Eastman Park, along the scenic Poudre River Trail, this beautiful little town garden is in full swing! Any season is a good time to view this wonderful garden, but fall is the perfect time to enjoy everything that Treasure Island has to offer. The colors will be changing and the vibrant beauty may surprise you.

Interested in volunteering? Treasure Island can use a few volunteers to get through the last couple of months this season. If you have free time between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on any days Monday through Thursday, we would love to see you out here. It is a great way to spend time outdoors, meet new friends, learn gardening skills that you can use at home, and enjoy the beautiful garden.
