A Touch of Provence in Broke: Lavender Fields in the Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley's boutique wine region has welcomed an enchanting new addition with the Hunter Lavender Farm bringing a slice of Provence to the picturesque landscapes of Broke. Founded by a couple seeking respite from Sydney's urban pace, this unique venture was inspired by their honeymoon travels through the French countryside.

Since 2019, the owners have been transforming their piece of paradise into a multi-sensory destination where visitors can experience lavender in all its glory. From breathing in the fragrant breeze to savouring the delicate flavours of lavender-infused products, the farm offers an immersive experience that sets it apart as the first of its kind in the Hunter Valley.

Now in its 3rd season, the lavenders are lusher than ever, and it won’t be long until they transform the fields into a magical sea of purple. The farm reopens on the 14th of December, offering day tours, workshops and photography sessions.

For those seeking a unique addition to their Hunter Valley itinerary, Hunter Lavender Farm promises to deliver an experience that engages all the senses while complementing the region's established wine tourism offerings. Visit www.hunterlavenderfarm.com.au for more info.

Vineyard Luxury Meets Community Living

Kelman Estate is a boutique vineyard that boasts award-winning wines, luxurious fivestar accommodations, and a distinctive residential community. It's the ideal destination for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a lifelong stay! What is unique about Kelman Estate and the wines it produces is the way it has been integrated into the broader community that also calls the estate home, with the vines purposely planted to meander between the privately owned properties in a way that is no longer possible to replicate anywhere else in Australia. While residents own their land and their houses, the community owns the vines and the fruit of the vines. Although residents are invited to simply enjoy living within the tranquil surroundings, many also choose to become more involved in the community and the operation of the vineyard. As you would expect from any quality winery, the estate boasts a beautiful cellar door set in a converted homestead, which is currently open Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm and offers tastings and sales of all its premium wines. For more info, visit www.kelmanvineyard.com.au

Craft Beer Oasis in the Hunter Valley

Whilst known for their experimental flavoured craft beers, such as a coconut and chocolate stout, The Valley Brewhouse also caters to people already comfortable with craft beers! The Hazy Pale Ale is popular with its tropical and citrus fruit flavours. Each month, on the Thursday before the last weekend of the month, a Beer Pre-Launch event is held in the Brewery, featuring that month’s limited releases paired with canapes and dessert! Bring your friends, family, and dogs to explore the expansive outdoor spaces, including the enormous kids' playground. Be sure to check out our weekly food and drink specials! Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular Light Up Your Summer

IMAGES SOURCE HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS

No visit to the Hunter Valley is truly complete until you've experienced Hunter Valley Gardens. This rings especially true during the festive season when the gardens transform into a magical wonderland, hosting Australia and the southern hemisphere's most spectacular light display - the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular, running from 1 November 2024 until 26 January 2025

This year's display boasts an incredible four million lights, creating the most dazzling spectacle yet. Whether you're with family, friends, that special someone, or work colleagues, you'll find endless enchantment across eight acres of stunning illuminated displays, complete with exciting rides, entertaining performances, delightful picnic spots, and fantastic food and beverage options. It's an unforgettable evening out that captivates visitors of every age!

Kim Jacobs, Marketing Manager at Hunter Valley Gardens (HVG), describes this year's event as their most ambitious to date.

"We're thrilled to welcome both returning guests and first-time visitors to Hunter Valley Gardens this festive season," said Kim.

"The holiday period is our favourite time of year, and we can't wait to share the Christmas magic with newcomers experiencing it for the first time. Between our stunning four million lights, exciting carnival rides, incredible displays, and entertaining live shows, we're proud to help

create lasting family memories throughout the Christmas and Summer seasons."

The Christmas Lights Spectacular is a massive undertaking, requiring six months of dedicated work annually. A skilled team of over 40 staff spends three months installing the displays and another three months carefully dismantling them. As the nation's largest light show, it's perfect for any escape, whether midweek or at the weekend.

"The Christmas Lights Spectacular has become a cherished holiday tradition for countless families. But its appeal extends far beyond thatwe see romantic couples, sweet proposal moments in the Lover's Tunnel, young couples on dates, and organised senior group visits. What truly warms our hearts are the families who return year after year to capture photos of their children at their favourite displays, similar to an annual Santa photo,” says Kim.

“Watching these children grow through yearly visits makes us feel privileged to be part of such precious family traditions."

This Christmas Lights Spectacular has the family holiday card sorted, with more photo opportunities than ever across the gardens, including a brand new 13-metre-tall Christmas tree or the giant Mr & Mrs Claus installations at the Big Red Chair, to name just a couple. Enter a new world around every corner with themed event zones, including Rocking Reindeers, Toyland, Festive Shores, Up Up & Away, Candyland, Fairyland, 12 Days of Christmas, Winter Wonderland and Christmas World.

Families can also take a picture with Santa Claus until 24 December at an additional cost to cap off all the fun.

The Christmas Lights Spectacular opens at 5.30pm and closes at 10.30pm (last entry at 9.30pm). On arrival, it’s a good idea to download the QR code, which contains a map you can follow, ensuring you don’t miss seeing anything.

From the top of the Gardens, near the entry, head left to check out the Festive Shores and Toyland, featuring giant Christmas toy soldiers, biplanes, Santa delivering presents and teddy bears before checking out the Up Up & Away balloons. Candyland is next on the lights trail with lollies, candy canes, and lollipops to check out before arriving in Winter Wonderland, a beautiful snowscape of snowflakes and reindeer. Backtrack a little and visit Fairyland, a formal garden with a fountain featuring fairies on the hedges, Snow White and Cinderella. Now you’re in the thick of rides, stage shows, and glorious food, so it's time to take a break and refuel! You’ll also find Mr and Mrs Claus nearby. Work your way along the trail to the 12 Days of Christmas, which many consider a highlight and not to be missed.

Along the way, you’ll encounter The Christmas World Marquee, where children can write letters to Santa and drop them in the mailbox, a Santa sleigh for photo opportunities, Santa’s workshops and reindeer in the trees (so be sure to look up!)

In addition to the fabulous light displays, there is a packed show program ready to dazzle guests. Throughout November, the program includes the Pretty Amazing Jono & Bravissimo Christmas Magic Show and the Little Scallywagz Christmas Show. December sees everything from November plus combined shows, and of course, a highlight of the season is the New Year’s Eve fireworks display at 9pm and the special kids' NYE Stage Show featuring the Little Scallywagz.

offerings include woodfired pizza, burgers, loaded fries, nachos, hot dogs, corn on a stick, dumplings, samosas and loads more. Beverages include mango lassi, bubble tea, soft drinks, juice, slushies and more. For those with a sweet tooth, enjoy family favourites, including doughnuts, churros, gelato, dessert cups, waffles on a stick, and ice cream cups drizzled with Belgian chocolate, to name a few.

After the New Year, the program changes slightly to include more stage shows for the kids, featuring the amazing Little Scallywagz Pirate Show. Argh! The full program is available to view on the HVG website at www.huntervalleygardens.com.au.

It's impossible to miss the gorgeous 25-metre Ferris Wheel that dominates the backdrop of the gardens and from which you can relax and soak up the views to feel the magic of the twinkling lights below you. Children and the young at heart will enjoy a spin on the amusement rides that are always a popular favourite, such as the spectacular 35-metrelong Superslide for the bold and daring, the classic dizzy-making Swing Chairs, a traditional vintage Venetian Carousel that was handmade in Italy and the twisty twirly Spinning Teacups for the little ones will all help to make it an unmissable event.

If all this fun makes you hungry, feed the family with an abundance of food and beverage options available throughout the grounds; food

For families who wish to have a BYO picnic, there is the option to enjoy a packed meal or BBQ in the park near the HVG Shopping Village (picnics are not permitted in the gardens themselves).

HVG offers re-entry passes if you’re coming back in the same session. You’ll need to see the staff at the entry gate to take advantage of this option.

HVG again offers a combined day and evening pass so visitors can enjoy the full garden experience during the daytime and the evening’s Christmas Lights Spectacular. Enjoy everything the gardens have to offer during the day, exit by 4.30pm when the gardens have to be vacated, enjoy a beverage at a nearby winery or pub and then return from 5.30pm when the light shows begin. It’s the perfect day out.

There are accommodation packages available that include entry to the Christmas Lights Spectacular, six ride tickets per person, accommodation for one night and a breakfast buffet. The package through The Mercure is for two adults and two children and starts ▶

from $389/room per night midweek or $489/room per night on weekends. Harrigan's accommodation offering is for two adults and one child at $309/room per night midweek or $409/room per night on weekends. Note that weekends attract a minimum stay of two nights.

It is annual events such as this one that make the Hunter Valley so special. 174 Years of Wine Heritage:

Inside the Ben Ean Estate

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

The words ‘ben ean’ are Scottish for “mountain of pleasure”, and the Ben Ean winery complex, formerly known as Lindemans, in the heart of picturesque Hunter Valley wine country, certainly lives up to its name! With a cellar door that offers an extensive range of wines, including Penfolds Grange for tastings; the popular, family-friendly restaurant Baumé serving up delicious Mediterranean-inspired cuisine; the historical and astonishingly renovated Still House providing that VIP experience for tastings, dining and private events; and now the recently opened Ben Ean Patisserie serving expertly brewed coffee and a tempting array of freshly baked pastries, cakes and pies to be savoured on the terrace whilst enjoying the gorgeous views - visitors will find it hard to leave!

Under the Lindemans brand, the vineyards here have produced some of the most successful wines in Australian viticulture history. The property has been producing wine for over 174 years and is deeply connected to the history of winemaking in Australia. It got caught up in the great merger of wine brands in the latter part of the twentieth century and spent some time closed and abandoned. In 2017, Colin Peterson, patriarch of one of the great winemaking families of the Hunter, approached his friend and wine industry icon Brian McGuigan with the idea of purchasing the Estate together to preserve its heritage.

“I would drive past it daily, and I just felt so sad about it,” said Colin. “It holds significant historical importance to the growth of the Hunter Valley wine industry, and I became determined to do something about it.”

Today the property is owned by the two families (‘from our wine families to yours’), and with Savannah Peterson at the helm, they have displayed extraordinary dedication to returning the estate to its former glory and its rightful place in history. With extensive refurbishment to the cellar door, restaurant, function, Still House and winery areas over recent

years and expansion of its offerings, it is a must-see destination for those visiting the Hunter.

With two such legendary wine-making families involved, the range of wines available for tasting includes the labels of each winemaking family with wines from Savannah Estate, Lisa McGuigan Wines, Weerona, Petersons Wines, Gunpowder, and the new The Still House Wines. In addition, Ben Ean is the only place in NSW where visitors to the cellar door can book a tasting of Penfolds Grange as well as other premium Penfolds wines that are also available.

The Still House, built by John McDonald in 1907 to house his distillery, has become the most sought-after destination for VIPs and those ‘in the know’ who want to enjoy private dining and tasting experiences while soaking up the extraordinary heritage of this once-humble building, where the original copper brandy still sits with a historical beauty all of its own. The shelves are stocked with old Lindeman’s and Penfolds bottles, some dating back to the 1930s, and the space is used to host private tastings and dining events that are nothing short of bucket-list experiences.

Baumé Restaurant pitches itself as the option between fine dining and pub meals and recommends the European practice of sharing dishes. Influenced by Mediterranean flavours and featuring familyfriendly favourites such as pizza and pasta, it’s popular with locals as well as visitors. Diners can enjoy the delicious fare on a sun-drenched terrace, sipping wine from an extensive wine list that even includes options from Colin Peterson’s cellar for those looking for something extra special. Don’t miss the hugely popular starter of Arancini of Roasted Tomatoes, Basil, and Mozzarella served with Basil Aioli or for mains, the 6-Hour Slow Braised Italian Style Lamb with Rosemary & Red Wine Jus, and for dessert you might want to try the Snickers Cheesecake or the Key Lime Pie. A Chef’s selection of three pizza specials changes daily and is ideal for the whole family.

The Ben Ean Patisserie opened in July of this year and provides a more casual café-style dining option that can be enjoyed on a terrace overlooking the vineyards and stunning views. Enjoying rave reviews since opening, diners can’t get enough of pastry chef Steven Bampton’s sweet and savoury options that include freshly baked pies (Brazilian BBQ and Chimichurri pie, anyone?), a French Vanilla Slice that is widely claimed to be one of the best in the region and an incredible range of mouth-watering cakes, classic sausage rolls, and gluten-free options for those with dietary restrictions. Open seven days from 8am to 3pm, it will satisfy sweet cravings, your coffee fix or your need for a quick bite.

A must-include stop on your Hunter Valley itinerary, Ben Ean is open seven days a week. For restaurant and tasting bookings and more

Where rolling vineyards meet Irish charm, Harrigan's Hunter Valley stands as a beloved Hunter Valley institution. Not Your Average White Secret Seven-Year

Wine Project Revealed

WORDS LIANE MORRIS

This month, Latitude 32 Wines is launching The Enigma – a 2024 vintage epitomising the winery’s catch cry of ‘fun with serious intent’. The passion project of Emma and David White, the founders of Latitude 32, it’s been seven years in the making and is destined to change perceptions of wine, pushing sensory boundaries and delivering an experience that’s been hailed as “Australia in a glass.”

“The Enigma represents Latitude 32’s pursuit of innovation,” said Emma.

“A white wine made from black grapes, inspired by winemaking traditions from around the world but rooted firmly in the terroir of the Hunter Valley. This wine comes from our 40-year-old dry-grown Pinot Noir vines at our Duck Hollow vineyard and is both a tribute to our region and a study in contrast – a wine crafted ‘through a new lens’.”

Emma and David were inspired to create this distinctive White Pinot Noir after their travels to Alsace, France, in 2017, where they first discovered and fell in love with it.

“The first time I tried a White Pinot Noir in France, I was totally confused by the experience,” says Emma.

“We were asked to guess the varietal, and we just assumed it was one of the six whites the region is known for, despite the red wine experience during the tasting. Of course, we were wrong to think it was a white wine – everyone gets it wrong, which is the fun part. I bought it for all my friends and just loved confusing their palettes.

“In 2020, we discovered it again in Oregon in the US, where they make quite a bit of it. I’ve wanted to make my own version ever since that first tasting.”

Their commitment to crafting a wine that defies standard varietal expression was initially resisted by their winemaker, who recognised the challenge they faced. Pinot Noir is traditionally a cool-climate wine, but Latitude 32 produces it in a warm climate. Creating a white wine with true Pinot Noir flavour characteristics without a pink Rosé hue was a significant challenge. The process of successfully vinifying the black grapes to produce a wine that looks truly white is a secret that Emma is not about to share!

“I’m so excited to launch this into the world. We’ll produce a new one yearly, but it will always be different. We think we’re the only

winery creating a true White Pinot Noir in Australia; others are technically called white, but they have the pink hue of a Rosé, so they don’t offer that mindbending experience of tasting a white wine but experiencing the flavours and aromas of a red,” says Emma.

This is what makes The Enigma a truly unique tasting experience. The wine showcases a refined elegance, marked by well-integrated oak and subtle tannins that provide a sophisticated structure. On the palate, it unfolds with layers of strawberries, cherries, fresh melon, juicy white peach, and baked apple, all underscored by a delicate spice. The bright acidity provides a firm backbone and a long, memorable finish. It’s best served slightly chilled.

The Enigma is produced in limited quantities and is available now at the Latitude 32 Wines Cellar Door, located on Hermitage Road Pokolbin, where the newly renovated cellar door features sweeping views of the vineyard set against the backdrop of the Broken Back Mountains. You can also purchase it online, retailing for $65 per bottle.

“We’re offering it for tasting now. A fun thing to do is to taste it side by side with our traditional Pinot Noir, produced from the same block, but I particularly love it when people don’t know what they’re tasting. When you ask them to describe what they’re tasting, we hear things like, ‘I want to say that I can smell strawberries, but I can’t because it’s a white wine!’. It proves that people should say what they actually feel about their wine experience because you can’t get it wrong. Don’t be afraid to say what you taste and smell.

“The Enigma is a wine that defies the traditional Pinot Noir profile. Pour a glass for family, friends, or even those wine aficionados who think they’ve tried it all. Will they guess the varietal? Probably not, but that’s half the fun!”

Latitude 32 is a place where picnics are encouraged, lawn games can be enjoyed by young and old, they serve delicious dumplings, and wine can be purchased by the glass and enjoyed on a stroll through the vineyard. The cellar door is open Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Book your tastings at www.latitude32wines.com/cellar-door.
