MUSTARD
Napa Valley’s Best Kept Secret
T
There is a beautiful little secret about Napa Valley, one to which many a local resident has been privy for decades. One that most every local resident will share with a sense joy and ease and wonder. Welcoming and warm as they are, you won’t need to wait on befriending a Napa Valley resident to discover this secret because every year, like clockwork, this pretty little secret springs to life and announces itself in a flourish of dazzling yellow for all the world to see, as if to say, “Well, hello there. I know I’ve kept you guessing but I know you’re glad I’m here.” The secret, you know, is mustard flower. And, if Napa Valley is known far and wide for its iconic world-class wines, the mustard flower that covers the vineyard rows while the vines are sleeping through winter is certainly iconic in its own right. Peeking through the earth just at the tipping point of spring, the mustard flower bloom truly manifests into a vivid bright carpet of yellow petals canvassing the vineyards. Trust us, you will want to see this and, you will quickly determine that no two seasons in Napa Valley are the same and yet they are ever incredible. Sure, there is magic in the summer with fabulous wines flowing freely and music festivals galore in Napa Valley, and yes, yes the autumn brings the much anticipated harvest and that next incredible vintage of Napa Valley blends. But, just as the tail-end of winter gives way to spring, another kind of magic happens.
This hidden gem should be added to your list of things to discover about Napa Valley. You will be inspired. The residents of Napa Valley are and continue to be year after year. Marking and commemorating the annual mustard bloom, a small and growing group of artists and artisans coalesced to share with everyone how this spectacular little flower has inspired them.
Why do mustard flowers grow in Napa Valley? Biodiversity! Some time ago, mustard flower was planted between vineyard rows as a cover crop, protecting the soil and replenishing it with nutrients, while also attracting beneficial insects, preventing erosion, and warding off grapevine pests.

Offering everything from beautiful paintings (peep the cover of this issue) to spectacular photography to sculptures to skincare products, the makers and craftsmen in Napa Valley make it point to share their wares and their wonder during the growing Mustard Celebration season. This evolving celebration, the brainchild of longtime local artist, Jessel Miller, has began to grow (no pun intended) in momentum. Every year, for the last many, Miller has faithfully wrangled more folks to join in the fun, with businesses in all five towns of Napa Valley – Calistoga,
St. Helena, Yountville, the City of Napa, and American Canyon – offering special activities, discounts, tastings, and gift items. Try out a guided acrylic painting class inspired by mustard blooms or perhaps sample wines with a pairing of light bites made with a flare of gourmet of mustard, walk through the various towns and experience the many galleries throughout Napa Valley, or commemorate the mustard season via a self-guided road trip. But, be sure to catch this beautiful cover crop before its ephemeral display passes. View the mustard fields in full bloom, usually starting sometime in late February and lasting through March. It really is quite the spectacle. If this best kept secret wasn’t enough, here’s another
insider’s tip to add to your arsenal. Mustard Season is one of the best times to visit Napa Valley. With generally fewer people in the region, late January through March is the ideal time to explore the plethora of wineries in Napa Valley, when the pace is even slower than usual, allowing you to spend a little extra time at your favorite wineries, restaurants, and spas. If your Instagram feed needs an infusion of wow, there is no shortage of photo-worthy spots featuring mustard flower in the vineyards. Come sip and sample your Cabernet Sauvignon, meander to edge of the vineyard with your wine in hand, and capture your memory-making moments. Mustard season in Napa Valley, the best kept secret you’ve just uncovered.

The Hess Art Collection at Hess Persson Estates
Donald Hess formally began collecting art in 1966. Today, Hess Persson Estates houses less than a quarter of a collection that is shown in museums worldwide. As is evident by the caliber of the art gallery, the Hess-Persson family collects art with an uncanny ability to identify lesser-known artists who often go on to become wellknown and highly respected in their disciplines. Located above the handsome tasting room, guests have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the renowned art collection, followed by a tasting of the equally impressive estate-exclusive wines.

HALL Wines Bunny Foo Foo by Lawrence Argent
Bringing together art, nature, and wine, Santa Rosa’s Paradise Ridge Winery invites guests into its sculpture garden to view the ever-changing collection from a host of artists. Scattered throughout the diverse property, sculptures pop amidst stands of trees, in Marijke’s Grove, Paradise Meadow and The Love Meadow, and the new winemaking building. While sipping a glass of award-winning wine, the effect is a thrill to the senses. Readily photographed after surviving the 2017 fires that destroyed the winery, the LOVE sign prevails on the property to this day. Many of the artworks were displayed at Burning Man and have now found a home at Paradise Ridge. Empyrean Temple Santa Rosa

di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, Napa Located in scenic Napa Valley, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art engages its community in the connective power of art and nature through its permanent collection of Northern California art, contemporary exhibitions, and thoughtprovoking educational programs that inspire creativity and curiosity. The vision of two devoted patrons of the arts, Rene and Veronica di Rosa, it is through their generosity that the art collection, galleries, and surrounding open space were gifted to the public for the enjoyment of future generations. Today, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art is protected in perpetuity under the Napa County Land Trust and is an art park and nature preserve that features multiple galleries, sculpture gardens, and a 35-acre lake, all located on 217 scenic acres in Napa Valley’s famed Carneros region
Imagery Estate Winery, Glen Ellen
Imagery Winery infuses art throughout the guest experience, from unique artwork replicated on every label, to the tasting room, and the dedicated onsite art gallery, featuring label artwork commissioned from some of the world’s most notable contemporary artists. The entire collection has over 600 artworks by over 400 artists. Currently, around 60 pieces are on view in the gallery. Originally founded by Joe Benziger and now run by his daughter, winemaker Jamie Benziger, at any given time Imagery has as many as 35 artists are working – without a deadline – on pieces that will appear on future Imagery wine labels.

This non-profit arts organization provides a space for creativity to flourish through classes, camps, and community art projects, fostering a sense of shared artistic expression. In Santa Rosa, the Art Museum of Sonoma County stands as a hub for both local and international artists. ORIN SWIFT CELLARS New Experiences in an Entirely New Space
Cool, edgy vibes set the tone for Orin Swift’s newest venture in downtown St. Helena. The completely redesigned space includes new Rock, Paper, Vault Tastings plus an exclusive Scissors experience. Orin Swift Cellars, the edgy California-based wine label and creative studio, and Dave Phinney, the creative mastermind and winemaker behind the brand, just unveiled Napa Valley’s newest and most disruptive wine tasting experience. Inspired by “rock, paper, scissors” – the universal game of American youth – the wine tastings include Rock, Paper, and Vault, named for the eighty-year-old bank building it now inhabits. Visitors are introduced to the captivating wines of Orin Swift and the stories behind its labels making them more accessible, . Behind a private closed door, the most discerning customers can find Orin Swift’s most exclusive tasting, “Scissors.” A bespoke experience tucked away in a speakeasystyle lounge, Scissors is unique to each guest. Serving an exclusive selection of wines that cannot be found anywhere else, Scissors is about to be Napa Valley’s most soughtafter reservation. Phinney is also the founder of the cult brand The Prisoner, known for producing high-quality wines with memorable, eye-catching labels, so his fans know to expect the unexpected from him. In this case, Dave has designed the tasting spaces from floor to ceiling, thrifting furniture, reclaiming wood and metal fixtures, and even restoring an Art Deco façade from the building’s past life that he discovered – and embraced – during construction. He intentionally created space for exploration, so that visitors want to liger and uncover layers of design the winemaking alike. The Rock, Paper, and Vault tastings are $45, $60 and $80, respectively. For the Scissors experience ($125), guests are greeted by a host who guides the way to the tucked-away, speakeasy-style lounge. The atmosphere exudes sophistication and has been curated to spark creative inspiration. The experience will expand the wine tasting into a creative journey, allowing a peek into the creative process of founder and visionary, Dave Phinney. Due to the exclusive nature of the Scissors experience, reservations are required, and access is limited. Open daily from 10-5 | 1321 Main Street, St. Helena | OrinSwift.com

Discover Historic Sonoma Plaza
T
he historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.

FARM AT CARNEROS Farm to Fork Dining
FRANK FAMILY VINEYARDS Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines Frank Family’s 2018 RHF Cabernet Sauvignon has earned a spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2023, an annual roundup of the year’s most exciting wines. This signature Cabernet, named for founder Richard Harvey Frank, received a score of 95 points and was featured as number 61 on the list, earning the highest ranking of all Rutherford Cabernets. It is soft and supple with currant and blackberries at its core. A mix of cinnamon and dark chocolate play well against its savory components of dried herb and dusty earth.
Guided by the passion of James Beard Award Winner Chris Bianco, the newly reimagined FARM restaurant is now open for dinner and Sunday brunch and offers a warm and inviting dining experience perched in the heart of Napa Valley’s countryside. Rooted in the Italian farmhouse tradition, FARM sources the freshest ingredients from on-site gardens and the abundance of fine local purveyors. With a beautifully redesigned dining room, expanded fireside patio, stylish bar and adjacent FARM Pavilion, the grounds offer ample opportunity to enjoy food inspired by a deep appreciation of “all that makes good things good.” — Chris Bianco

NAPA TRUFFLE FESTIVAL January 12-15, 2024
Truffles for the Passionate and the Curious!
W
hether you’re you a foodie with a passion for truffles, or a food voyager with a curiosity about one of the most exclusive foods in the world, the Napa Truffle Festival has something for you with programs that offer an opportunity to explore and learn firsthand from experts about the gastronomy, science, history, mystery and hunting and harvesting of the highly prized Périgord black truffle (aka black diamonds). For a truffle adventure, on Saturday come for Dig Truffles? — A Foodie’s Guide with Winery Truffle Lunch & Cooking Demo at Bouchaine Vineyards. This day-long journey offers all things truffle, including a cooking demo, fun science, meet the truffle dogs and, of course, lots and lots of extraordinary truffle cuisine paired with wines and presented by world-class experts. Or, come on Sunday for a Winery Truffle Lunch at Donum Estate where you can explore the Estate’s stunning grounds and artworks on a self-paced walking tour. The day includes a rousing truffle dog demo (petting encouraged!). See the highly trained truffle dogs in action as they sniff out truffles. Looking for a divine dining experience? The Truffles & Wine Dinner at La Toque offers the ultimate culinary truffle experience. Composed by Michelin star and master chefs flown in from around the world, this opulent dinner is truffle cuisine at its absolute best! It’s not every day that FOUR Michelin star/master chefs converge in the same kitchen to create a meal. Incomparably earthy and primal, the finest and freshest black truffles take center stage in each exquisite course, expertly prepared by our superstar chefs. The evening begins with a reception featuring Roederer Estate’s classic sparkling wine served with elegant truffle canapes, followed by a superb multi-course truffle menu impeccably paired with some of the world’s finest library and reserve wines, hand-selected by Chef Ken Frank and his team of sommeliers to complement the complex flavors of the black truffle dishes. For a more casual experience, you can catch the free Monday Truffle Festival Marketplace at Oxbow Public Market where you’ll get a chance to sample the extraordinary flavors of the mythic black truffle prepared in every sort of fabulous way — from wild mushroom goat cheese truffle enchiladas, truffled grilled oysters and pizza al tartufo to truffled French fries, chocolate truffles, and cheeky cupcakes with little pink pigs (as in: they hunt truffles). Also, taste wines, see cooking demos, meet the truffle dogs, and shop for specialty foods and products. Plus, buy your own fresh black truffle! napatrufflefestival.com

Bocce Courts Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.
