Altaf Amlani
Blue Diamond Jeweler: Their 4 C’s In the world of diamonds, the 4 C’s (Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carats) are the bedrock for defining a stone’s value. But for Altaf Amlani, a Ugandan-born, life-long jeweler, value is based on the human experience in addition to the jewel itself. Since Blue Diamond Jeweler’s inception in 1974, his family-owned company has built long-term relationships on trust, service, and quality craftsmanship. Amlani’s values are rooted in a belief of a universal connectedness which has shaped his version of the 4 C’s to Caring, Collaborate, Character, and Charitable. Customers will experience these values across the four boutiques in California through each interaction with their expert team of jewelers and designers.
Complimentary ‘Spa Treatment’ Looking forward to a special event? In addition to regular maintenance of your jewelry items, we recommend taking full advantage of the on-site “Jewelry Spa” services to get all of your pieces sparkling for any occasion. Complimentary services include an ultrasonic cleanse, high pressure steam bath, and hand polish.

Concept of Connectedness This theme is woven throughout the company from the intertwined “B” and “D” in their logo to a stunning collection of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches. “Like an orchid, if planted in good soil (meaning a welcoming and comfortable space) it will draw all that it needs to in time unfurl its beauty,” says Amlani, referring to the beautifully curated offerings and customer-led, one-of-a-kind designs. The typical jewelry store emphasis on security and a feeling of transaction-required appointments is purposefully omitted at Blue Diamond. In its place, a relaxed atmosphere of exploration and creativity spawns an organic process where customers lead the selection and design of their piece. A wide spectrum of metals, shapes, and stones are available at price points ranging from a few hundred dollars up to a nine-figure investment. Inspiration for the settings comes from Altaf’s travels to Italy, Bali, Thailand, Hong Kong, Columbia (for precious emeralds), and beyond. He encourages custom designs for wedding bands and engagement rings to honor each couple’s unique expression of their love. Embedded in the interior of each custom ring band is a small blue diamond, a symbol of its and each person’s rarity in the universe. To ensure a perfect expression of themselves in the finished piece, a wax replica of the ring will be created at their Los Angeles-based design studio for final client approval.
Giving Back As an extension of the love and kindness Altaf Amlani sees in all, and to pay tribute to his late mother’s founding of the first Montessori school in Uganda and his father’s 6o-year support of an orphanage in India, Amlani carries on the legacy of service through his fourth “C” of Charitable. Each engagement ring sale supports one child for one year at the Nia Childrens’ Foundation in Kenya. This critical financial support provides daily meals to children in the slums of Kenya helping them stay active, focused, and educated.

Full-Service Jeweler Like all quality jewelers, Blue Diamond Jeweler offers a variety of services in addition to sales. A complimentary in-store cleaning for jewelry is available with an option to purchase more extensive deep cleaning for the removal of scratches or defects. Their state-of-the-art repair facilities locally and in Southern California resize bands, secure and tighten loose stones, fix broken chains and clasps, and do earring post repair. Intricate heirloom restoration which brings family keepsakes back to their original beauty is also available. Master watchmakers with over 40 years’ experience in the care of fine timepieces can make general adjustments to full-service repairs and cleaning on collector timepieces to maintain their shine and value.

Cozy Destinations for Fireside Wine Tasting BY LAURA NESS
Baby, it’s cold outside, so why not sit by the fire and enjoy a winetasting indoors? Or, bundle up and enjoy the nip in the air by an outside firepit. Red wine tastes so much better when the weather is chilly, so now’s the time to indulge in a rich cabernet blend, a righteously spiced cherry-infused merlot, or perhaps a dark and fruity zinfandel with a classic pepper-tinged finish, or a meaty, enveloping syrah.

PRIEST RANCH
A one-of-a-kind, two-part, food and wine pairing experience BY YVONNE MICHIE HORN
Priest Ranch Tasting Room Part one begins at the winery’s Yountville tasting room where Priest Ranch wines, produced from fruit grown high in the hills of the Vaca range on Somerston Estate acreage, have been showcased since 2010. In 2020, the tasting room emerged from renovation, its wine bar atmosphere replaced with the sophisticated, yet comfortable, lounge-like like setting enjoyed today. Guided one-on-one tastings include pourings of exclusive proprietary blends along with varietals rarely encountered in the region, such as Brut Rosé of Syrah. Food pairings to go well with the wines are imaginatively created by Somerston Estate’s executive chef Dan Solomon. Not to be missed is the Bacon Experience, four wines matched with four flavors of bacon. The Kitchen at Priest Ranch The experience continues in an adjacent building that became available last year. By the close of 2023, with the exteriors of the two buildings cosmetically matched to blend seamlessly into a single property, the Kitchen at Priest Ranch opened with a menu designed to pair with the wines offered for tasting next door. Food and wine pairings are far from unusual in high-end restaurants. The Kitchen at Priest Ranch,

however, offers something surprisingly different – fast, casual daytime options with attractive prices. Chef Dan Solomon explains the concept: “In Yountville, most restaurants are conducive to enjoying a leisurely twohour meal with a higher expenditure. What we created at The Kitchen is a casual dining experience that would appeal to both the locals and the visitors alike at a favorable price point.” Walk through the Kitchen’s door into a sleek, yet welcoming, interior. Step up to the counter, choose what you’d like from the posted menu and find a place to sit. Your order will soon be ready. Menu choices are offered in three categories: Breakfast All Day, Sandwiches and Such, and Big Salads. A quick look through the offerings lets it be known that this is no ordinary fast-food joint. Under the Breakfast category, the Loaded Latke’s ingredient description lists smoked salmon, house latkes, herbed cream cheese, fried egg, preserved lemon relish. Suggested pairing: 2018 Brut Rosé. Take that Egg McMuffin! Indoor and outdoor dining are available for approximately 45 guests. Outdoors includes a charming patio and, adding to Priest Ranch’s one-ofa-kind experience, the only rooftop dining in Yountville. What better place to enjoy your extraordinary fast food than in that surrounded by 360-degree views?

Langtry Farms
About an hour and a half north of Napa, straight up the Silverado Trail (CA 29), you’ll discover a relaxed rural area, laid back, lush with flora, fauna, lakes, rivers, and of course, wineries and vineyards. Welcome to Lake County, “with California’s cleanest air, America’s oldest lake, and the friendliest folk on God’s green earth, life in Lake County tends to freshen your perspective. People are a part of nature, not apart from it. And being a bit weird is worn as a badge of honor. Come to Lake County and see what makes us clearly different.” Clearlake, after which the area is named, is America’s largest natural lake, dating back about 2-1/2 million years. Mount Konocti (a dormant volcano) rises majestically over the landscape. Lava domes, cinder cones, and the world’s largest geothermal field define the area and the terroir. The grapes, and therefore the wine, are uniquely influenced by geology. There are over thirty vineyards to explore, with wines to savor. Sip distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in addition to numerous other varietals. The area is so well regarded for grape growing that several prominent names, such as the Jackson Family, Foley Family, Beckstoffer, and Constellation Brands own vineyards in Lake County. Lake County is also a haven for mountain bikers, hikers, fishermen, water enthusiasts, RV devotees, and nature lovers. Lake County is a slice of heaven off the beaten path.

Six Sigma Ranch, simply put, is a one-stop shop for your wine, lodging, and outdoor adventure fun. This 4,000acre ranch was purchased by Kaj Ahlmann in 2000, with a handshake. Wines are from estate-grown grapes, (including Tempranillo, planted more than 20 years ago), and are small lot, elegant, and available mainly through the winery. Kaj and his son Christian, have one goal in mind: For everyone who visits, to have a great experience and come back again and again. Stay under the stars in one of Six Sigma’s 63 Huttopia glamping units, upscale and completely off-grid. Glamping sites are availble beginning in April; reservations can be made now for the glorious springtime. Or, bring your RV to camp out if you prefer. Hike and Bike, on more than 14 miles of trails. Take a Pinzgauer Vineyard tour, savor a ranch-to-table private lunch or dinner, and enjoy many of the special, regularly scheduled events, such as: aily wine tasting on the site of what was once a •D stagecoach stop (most wines aged two years in barrel and two years in bottle prior to release). •G uided hikes and bike rides •P ick-up and new-release parties throughout the year (one of the benefits of club membership) •P aella Night: First Wednesday of every month – bring the family and family dog to this family-friendly property! Enjoy, kick back, and exhale in the comfortable, friendly environment of Six Sigma Ranch. You will see stars like you never have before as you decompress, make new friends, and plan your return visit.
Langtry Farms, Vineyard and Winery has a romantic, storied history. Lillie Langtry, (b. 1853 on the Isle of Jersey) was a famous British actress and socialite, performing both in England and the United States. In 1888, seeing an ad in a local publication, Lilly purchased a 4,200-acre ranch, founding Langtry Winery, which she owned for 18 years. The modern-day operation began with the initial 1982 vintage, they have been producing award-winning wines ever since. Whereas mostly Bordeaux varieties are grown, Langtry also grows, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc (named Langtry Lillie), and Chardonnay. The drive up to Langtry is breathtaking, as you wend your way through vineyards, hills, and moss-covered trees. Once you arrive at Langtry you will be treated to an amazing view, overlooking one of Lake County’s 1000 lakes. The tasting room reflects the wines. Crisp, clean, pure, inviting. Bring a picnic lunch, and after your wine tasting, sit outside at one of the tables, as you sip a Langtry Cabernet Sauvignon (aged 30 months in barrel and 1 year in bottle before release), and marvel at the view.

Wine - Dine - Stay - Play in Lake County! Let’s Eat!
I’m ready to make a return to Lake County for the food! One night isn’t enough, as Lake County has an abundance of places to eat. Down home, local, regional, ethnic, pubs, casual, friendly, and creative. But when in Kelseyville, you have to eat at Saw Shop Public House! Their motto is “Welcome to our house—everyone is local, and locals are family.” Unpretentious, on Kelseyville’s (only) main street, the food here will blow you away. It’s good, fun, tasty and friendly. Sit back and enjoy your meal. Savor house-made, farm-fresh creative dishes. This is downhome gourmet comfort food. Included in the menu are gluten-free and vegan items. Start your meal with a Mason Jar Cocktail (like the Church Girl), while exploring the menu. There is an ample selection, however, you won’t go wrong with the mouth-watering, flavorful, tasty, make your salivary glands work overtime Maple Whiskey Glazed Port Chops, with cheesy grits and fresh farm-to-table veggies. And dessert … I’ll leave that one to you! We need to get back to Lake County and explore more of the local restaurants, flavors, and hospitality.
After All is Said and Done
Following wine tasting, a relaxing night in a B&B in the vineyards, after savoring down-home cooking, and partaking in many of the activities that abound, when you look back on your Lake County visit you will come away knowing what made this trip exceptional: The People! Hospitable, family-friendly, authentic, accepting, and just special. Once you return to “the world” outside you may pinch yourself and wonder: “Was it a dream?” And, then you’ll think to yourself: “I’ll be back;” I know I will. The approval of the two new AVAs is one of many recent achievements for the Lake County region. This high-elevation, mountainous region of the prestigious North Coast AVA is gaining traction as the market looks for high-end, California wines at an accessible price point. With its volcanic terroir, the region is being recognized for its capacity to produce quality winegrapes that result in wines that are complex and distinct. The wines offer great aromatic and flavor intensity alongside noticeable aging potential. The region has become a go-to source for high-end Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Stretching across 7,674 acres and is known for producing red winegrapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, and Syrah. The first record of vineyards in Long Valley was a family vineyard planted on land near the southern end of the Valley by John Bonham in 1883. This was followed in 1885 when N.E. Hanson planted a vineyard on his ranch with 2,000 vines called “The Crags.” Modern viticulture in the area started with the planting of a block of vines by David James, using cuttings from the Fay vineyard that won the 1976 “Judgment of Paris.” James and his wife moved to Lake County in 1978 and purchased Pomo Ranch, located on the western shelf along the southern end of Long Valley. The vines were planted on their own rootstock and are still in production. Today, this property is the location of Stonehouse Cellars, a licensed Lake County wine producer. Upper Lake Valley AVA is approximately 20,187 acres and is suitable for growing a variety of grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc.

Discover Historic Sonoma Plaza
T
he historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.

MUSTARD
Napa Valley’s Best Kept Secret
T
There is a beautiful little secret about Napa Valley, one to which many a local resident has been privy for decades. One that most every local resident will share with a sense joy and ease and wonder. Welcoming and warm as they are, you won’t need to wait on befriending a Napa Valley resident to discover this secret because every year, like clockwork, this pretty little secret springs to life and announces itself in a flourish of dazzling yellow for all the world to see, as if to say, “Well, hello there. I know I’ve kept you guessing but I know you’re glad I’m here.” The secret, you know, is mustard flower. And, if Napa Valley is known far and wide for its iconic world-class wines, the mustard flower that covers the vineyard rows while the vines are sleeping through winter is certainly iconic in its own right. Peeking through the earth just at the tipping point of spring, the mustard flower bloom truly manifests into a vivid bright carpet of yellow petals canvassing the vineyards. Trust us, you will want to see this and, you will quickly determine that no two seasons in Napa Valley are the same and yet they are ever incredible. Sure, there is magic in the summer with fabulous wines flowing freely and music

festivals galore in Napa Valley, and yes, yes the autumn brings the much anticipated harvest and that next incredible vintage of Napa Valley blends. But, just as the tail-end of winter gives way to spring, another kind of magic happens. You will be inspired. The residents of Napa Valley are and continue to be year after year. Marking and commemorating the annual mustard bloom, a small and growing group of artists and artisans coalesced to share with everyone how this spectacular little flower has inspired them. Offering everything from beautiful paintings (peep the cover of this issue) to spectacular photography to sculptures to skincare products, the makers and craftsmen in Napa Valley make it point to share their wares and their wonder during the growing Mustard Celebration season. This evolving celebration, the brainchild of longtime local artist, Jessel Miller, has began to grow (no pun intended) in momentum. Every year, for the last many, Miller has faithfully wrangled more folks to join in the fun, with businesses in all five towns of Napa Valley – Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville, the City of Napa, and American Canyon – offering special activities, discounts, tastings, and gift items. Try out a guided acrylic painting class inspired by mustard blooms or perhaps sample wines with a pairing of light bites made with a flare of gourmet of mustard, walk through the various towns and experience the many galleries throughout Napa Valley, or commemorate the mustard season via a self-guided road trip. But, be sure to catch this beautiful cover crop before its ephemeral display passes. View the mustard fields in full bloom, usually starting sometime in late February and lasting through March. It really is quite the spectacle. If this best kept secret wasn’t enough, here’s another insider’s tip to add to your arsenal. Mustard Season is one of the best times to visit Napa Valley. With generally fewer people in the region, late January through March is the ideal time to explore the plethora of wineries in Napa Valley, when the pace is even slower than usual, allowing you to spend a little extra time at your favorite wineries, restaurants, and spas. If your Instagram feed needs an infusion of wow, there is no shortage of photo-worthy spots featuring mustard flower in the vineyards. Come sip and sample your Cabernet Sauvignon, meander to edge of the vineyard with your wine in hand, and capture your memorymaking moments. New Release Wine Recommendations
by Melissa Vogt
A Valentine’s Day wine for every palate. Rodney Strong Vineyards 2023 Rosé of Pinot Noir, $30 It wouldn’t be a proper Valentine’s Day without a pink wine option and this new release from Rodney Strong Vineyards is an approachable, affordable bottle. This vibrant rosé is crafted from Pinot Noir and shows off expressive aromas of strawberry and pineapple. The palate is bright and fresh with lively acidity and notes of Meyer lemon, wild strawberries, and green melon. Pair this with creamy cheeses like a soft chevre for a mouthwatering matchup.
Sonoma Cutrer 2021 Les Pierres Vineyard Chardonnay For Chardonnay lovers, this balanced expression is a must-have for Valentine’s Day charcuterie boards. This Chardonnay is harmonic on the palate with bright flavors of honeydew melon, lemon curd, and nice minerality; it’s got bright acidity with tons of freshness and a creamy mouthfeel. Pair this beauty with an assortment of local cheese and artisan cured meats to celebrate love over a tasty charcuterie spread.
Amulet Estate 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, $85 For those who prefer heavier wines, the Amulet Estate 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a fantastic Napa Valley red. Fruit for this wine is sustainably farmed in Yountville, and the 2021 vintage is proving to be a great year for Napa on the heels of much loss in 2020. This beautiful Cabernet is very approachable with soft tannins, a silky texture, and flavors of black cherry, plum, fig, and culinary herbs. The composition of the wine is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 5% Malbec, which accounts for the overall elegance and myriad flavors. The approachability upon release is unbeatable and this is a wine that will drink well as a standalone or alongside a perfectly grilled steak.
Flowers Vineyards & Winery 2022 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, $60 This is a lovely offering of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir from Flowers Vineyards & Winery. It shows off those earthy, forest floor-like aromas on the nose, with a ripe-fruited and savory flavors on the palate. Bright red cherries and baking spice comingle with layers of sweet tobacco leaf and dried leaves—that classic orange zest note finished strong. The light touch of 20% new French oak aging gives this Pinot Noir extra dimension and spice, but never overpowers the palate. This is a wine worth pairing with a main course.

Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. 2024 Pigs & Pinot Food & Wine Event Tickets for this highly acclaimed event are on sale now! On sale at 11am PT on Wednesday, January 10, this weekend event, now heading into its 17th year, will feature an unrivaled list of prominent chefs and winemakers benefiting the Palmer Family Education Foundation in partnership with the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation Chef Charlie Palmer’s highly acclaimed Pigs & Pinot returns for its 17th year, welcoming Pinot Noir and pork lovers to celebrate the spirit of wine country while supporting essential funding for a variety of communityfocused educational programs including culinary, music and art. Held at Chef Palmer’s newly redesigned Dry Creek Kitchen and the award-winning Hotel Healdsburg, event tickets and a limited number of weekend hotel packages for March 15-17 go on sale on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 benefitting the Palmer Family Education Foundation (PFEF) in partnership with the Sonoma County Vintners Foundation. “After sixteen years of support for the Sonoma County community, we’re thrilled to announce that the 17th annual Pigs & Pinot will be bigger and better than ever,” says Chef Charlie Palmer. “With the addition of new events, our new Pigs & Pinot partnership with Dustin Valette at The Matheson, and the development of The Palmer Family Education Foundation, we’ll be able to amplify our support for the next generation of chefs, winemakers and hospitality industry enthusiasts by supplying them with the necessary scholarships and funding to continue their advancement across a multitude of industries.” A weekend-long series of intimate dining and 46
educational seminars and events hosted by Chef Palmer, Pigs & Pinot is rooted in fostering the growth of the Sonoma County community, raising more than $1.5 million collectively since its inception. The evolution of this event has also served as a platform to further spotlight acclaimed local wineries, such as Healdsburg’s Papapietro Perry, who has specialized in single-vineyard wines for more than four decades and whose growth has accelerated in many parts due to its participation in Pigs & Pinot since 2006. While the Palmer Family Education Foundation is currently undergoing 501(c) accreditation, the Sonoma County Vintners Association will be serving as nonprofit partner to ensure funding is received for programs such as Healdsburg Center for the Arts, The Culinary Institute of America, Odyssey Wine Academy and Play it Forward Music Foundation, among others. Learn more about PFEF by visiting pigsandpinot.com/beneficiaries. “We’re thrilled about the upcoming 17th Annual event, where we’ll celebrate with Charlie Palmer and esteemed celebrity chefs,” says Ben Papapietro, Co-Owner and Winemaker of Papapietro Perry. “Participating in Charlie Palmer’s Pigs & Pinot has been a joy and winning the Pinot Cup twice has been a true honor! This extraordinary weekend promises unique experiences with imaginative food, wine education, elegant dinners, and vibrant pairings, all within a lively party atmosphere. Beyond the excitement, it's a wonderful chance to give back to Sonoma County.” For more information about Pigs & Pinot, including sponsors, talent, hotel packages, and more, visit pigsandpinot.com.

By the end of class, you’ll have a tasty array of treats and some key skills to use again and again. Limited to 24 seats. $100, 5:30-9pm bricoleurvineyards.com
MARCH 2-3
Wine Road Barrel Tasting Various wineries, Northern Sonoma County
The magic of Barrel Tasting is to get into the cellar and taste wines directly from the barrels. Almost all of the wineries will be selling futures – so plan now to taste…then buy the future! Many of the wines being offered are so limited they will sell out as futures. After you sample from the barrel, most wineries will also have a few current vintage wines for you to try, so you can buy wine to take home…to hold you over, waiting for those “futures” to get bottled! Barrel Tasting does not take place at one location, you travel from winery to winery, visiting the ones you are interested in exploring. Participating Wineries are located throughout Northern Sonoma County; Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Guerneville, Forestville, Sebastopol, Cloverdale and Geyserville. $195-$75
MARCH 3
Napa Valley Marathon
Silverado Trail, Calistoga to Napa Run, sip, and savor with Napa Valley. Napa Valley marathon passes beautiful scenery, vineyards, and some of the most world-renowned wineries along the way. $55-$205, 7:30am-5pm napavalleymarathon.org
