KEEPING IT GREEN
Solar panels are currently being installed on the roof of the winery building, which will enable the winery to provide all of its own energy needs. Certified a Napa Green winery since 2014, Frank Family has been sourcing energy from 100% renewables since 2022, but onsite solar will allow the winery to be grid-independent.
THE MILLER HOUSE at FRANK FAMILY VINEYARDS Blends Vineyard Views with Outstanding Hospitality
BY LAURA NESS
Napa’s “Hollywood Meets Wine Country” darling, Frank Family Vineyards, was born in 1993, when longtime Disney and Paramount executive, Rich Frank, purchased the old Larkmead Winery property on Larkmead Lane. Somehow, 30 years transpired, and during that time, Rich met Leslie Miller – an Emmy-winning, Canadian-born broadcast journalist with a stellar career in reporting, including as a TV news anchor at top rated KACB in Los Angeles. They fell in love, both with each other and with Napa, acquired over 380 acres of premium vineyard properties (Lewis, Winston, Benjamin and S&J), hired winemaker Todd Graff in 2003 (Artesa, Stag’s Leap, and Schramsberg), and grew the brand into a formidable store shelf presence and a destination in Napa Valley.
Wanting to commemorate this big anniversary, and also to create a special space for people to celebrate all of life’s occasions, including your average Tuesday afternoon, Leslie Miller Frank envisioned and then manifested The Miller House. It happens to be on the very spot where Leslie and Rich were married, between the old yellow farmhouse that serves as the Frank Family tasting room, and the surrounding vineyard.
Working together with architect, Howard Backen, and Napabased interior designer, Robin Beck of Hawkins Interiors, the stunning 2300-square-foot architectural statement came to life. Its enormous floor-to-ceiling walls of glass slide open to let in both the light and the outdoors. Fireplaces both inside and out, with the indoor one surrounded by cognac leather sofas, add to the ambience on chillier days. When the weather is balmy, birdsong abounds, as you taste in the capacious outdoor area, beneath white awnings, surrounded by the abundant green of the vineyards. Inside, the custom tables were lovingly made from recycle ashwood by Leslie’s brother in Canada. The place has a modern farmhouse feel that marries perfectly with farmhouse, and the older stone winery, which dates to 1884.
Hospitality Director, Liam Gearity, a Midwest-born, Hollywood transplant – lured by Leslie and Rich to work for them in Napa – leads the tastings at The Miller House, and is a master of describing wines and their provenance. With his documentarian elocution, he weaves in all the rich historical details of the property, from its Larkmead roots to the story of Rich’s own father, who gave up a baseball career to serve in the Army during WWII. He survived Omaha Beach and went on to drive trucks through Europe carrying oil for Patton’s tanks.

A Tasting Journey
The tasting experiences here at The Miller House vary with the seasons, but generally begin with sparkling, as Todd Graff is a master of bubbles. During a recent visit, we enjoyed a plate of pairings to accompany several of the special wines accessible to club members, including the 2016 Blanc de Blancs, a classic lemon peel and fresh ginger-laced sparkler, made of 100-percent Chardonnay from the Lewis Vineyard in Carneros. It was paired with Marin French Petite Supreme Brie: a superbly unfussy combo, but it might also be accompanied by a homemade yeasted blini with caviar and crème fraiche.
Gearity also poured us the 2021 Lewis Vineyard Chardonnay, a heady mélange of orange blossoms, lemon cream and mango, aged for 11 months in 100% new French oak barrels. The lively Meyer lemon acidity keeps it fresh as the afternoon breezes that grace Carneros, and made it sing nicely with Cypress Grove Lamb Chopper and a 24-month aged Comte.
To provide a contrast of flavor and texture, Gearity had the kitchen drizzle basil pesto and olive oil on the plates, which also included Marcona almonds and some lovely finocchio salami (made with fennel, a digestive aid), as well as braciola for pairing with the heavy reds. He encouraged tasting the different cheeses with and without the pesto along with each wine, just for fun. After all, that’s the whole idea.
Our first red, the 2019 RHF Rutherford Cabernet, named for Rich (Richard Harvey Frank), delivers bold, unmistakably Napa flavors, including blackberry, boysenberry, peppery cocoa with a hint of savory earth. We next tasted the 2019 Winston Hill Cabernet, a big-boned wine, with expansive black currant and chocolate covered caramel flavors from the first vineyard Frank purchased in 1990, and where the couple has made their home. Both wines are tuned with a bit of Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, making them more accessible in their youth.
We finished with the 2019 Patriarch, a 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, first made in 2012 to celebrate Rich’s father, Hy, who was turning 96 at the time. Graff selected the best Cabernet grapes from Winston Hill to make a wine fit to honor the man Rich admired so much. This was paired with some savory macarons, laced with bits of lavender and bacon: definitely not your preconception of macarons. As Gearity says, be open minded and enjoy the journey. Indulge in the iconic KPR Smashburger at The Kitchen at Priest Ranch, a beloved spot in Yountville. Day after day, you will see KPR Smashburgers enjoyed on the patio, in the intimate indoor dining area, or on the rooftop by locals and visitors alike. But why a SMASHburger, and where did the Smashburger movement begin? Let’s explore!
Much like Executive Chef Dan, the Smashburger craze traces its roots to the heartland of America. Originating in the mid-east, its inception was a revelation by a cook who pressed a burger patty with a can of beans, unlocking more decadent flavors by rendering down the fat. Though Dairy Cheer in Ashland, Kentucky, is credited with the first official Smashburger, smashed patties have a history dating back to 1932, when cooks stretched beef with onions during the Great Depression.
Today, many different iterations of this style of burger preparation have emerged. The best part is that all of them are delicious and continue to intensify the essential components of a burger patty. We’re not saying this way is the best way, but it is The Kitchen at Priest Ranch’s way of doing things!
The KPR version, for instance, is placed on the griddle, smashed, and then dressed with cheese to allow the rich, melty cheese to bind to the crisp patty. Then, it is piled onto a Bouchon Bakery bun dressed with caramelized onions, house-made pickles, shredded lettuce, fresh tomato, and Chef’s secret KPR sauce. You can make it a double, add a sunny egg, or pile on the bacon!
Chef Dan’s mastery of the Smashburger recently earned accolades, triumphing in a Smashburger Smackdown against Foodie Chap Liam Mayclem of KCBS. Test Kitchen Culinary Director Chef Belle English called it the “quintessential Smashburger,” while Executive Chef of Forktable Restaurant, Chef Casey Thompson, described it as “smashtastic.”
This winning creation reflects KPR’s commitment to culinary excellence, inviting you to experience the magic yourself next time you are in town. Visit The Kitchen at Priest Ranch and make the KPR Smashburger your own.

Fine Wine Meets Fine Art
Founded as a collaboration between Winemaker Joe Benziger and Artist Bob Nugent in 1987, Imagery Estate Winery is a marriage of art and wine. Unique varietals with a twist such as Lagrein, Malbec, Primitivo, Tannat, Viognier, and Albariño are produced along with California favorites such as Cabernet, Chardonnay, Merlot, and white blends. Their wines not only reflect artistry on the inside of the bottle but on the outside label as well. For each wine, every vintage will receive a different commissioned artwork to be featured as the label. The original canvas is then received into their gallery collection onsite with pieces showcased on rotation throughout the tasting room.
The common thread uniting each label is the requirement each artist incorporate a Parthenon into the piece. Often small and obscure, it pays homage to a hand-drawn sketch
Bob once made of a smaller replica Parthenon located at Benziger Winery. The nod to this iconic structure connects the two properties and two generations of family winemaking. An adaptation of the original sketch can be found on their flagship Bordeaux Blend, Pallas. Unlike their other wines, the label for this special bottling remains constant for each vintage. Now leading the charge at Imagery are two dynamic and accomplished young women: Jamie Benziger and Kara Lynae de Lambert . With the last name of Benziger, Jamie knew she had big shoes to fill when her father Joe retired from Imagery Estate in 2017. While completing her marketing and wine business degrees at Sonoma State University, she interned at Gundlach Bundschu, St. Francis Winery, and did a harvest in New Zealand. But it was working in the lab at Benziger and being mentored by her father which affirmed

her calling. Her first release, a Tempranillo Rosé, sold out in two months, and her portfolio of wines and recognition have grown with each vintage.
Kara Lynae de Lambert, Imagery Curator: Kara’s background in art history and arts management lead her to Imagery Estate where creative expression has been at the forefront of each bottle since the winery’s inception. Over the past ten years, Kara has managed the winery’s Artistry Label Program commissioning emerging and established artists for the wine label brand. A staggering total of 700 pieces from 400 artists will grace the front label of 30 unique bottlings per year. Kara selects the artists whose works are varied in medium, techniques, and expression and then she and Jamie taste together while viewing the submissions to find the right expression for that varietal and vintage.

FARMERS MARKETS Embrace Fresh Produce and Sustainable Living
BY TANYA SEIBOLD
With the abundance of fertile valleys and a longstanding history of farming in wine country, it’s no surprise our soils, climate, and dedicated farmers yield the finest foods and produce. All proudly grown, freshly picked, and brought to a farmers market near you. Your local farmers market is a place for the community to gather, explore new tastes, and where agricultural bounty and family stories are shared.
Savoring produce at the peak of its season and meeting the people who grow your food is the best reason to support your local farmers market. Most of the foods are minimally processed, and generally free from pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and genetic modification. Often heirloom varieties and breeds are used in conjunction with organic farming methods to offer the highest quality product to customers.
Most markets are now operating on a regular schedule through early autumn, so get down to yours to meet your growers, ranchers, and farmers. Ask questions about their sustainability practices and crop varieties; dive into how your food is grown. Get inspired by the shapes, colors, textures, smells, and flavors of healthy, fresh, local ingredients lovingly tended by a small family farmer. Learn preservation techniques, recipes, and prep tips for what you just bought. By making a local farmers market part of your weekly routine, shopping becomes a joy rather than a chore.

New Release Wine Recommendations
by Melissa Vogt
These new releases are a strong showing as we ease into spring, and make for perfect sips for Mother’s Day, showcasing four distinct varietals for every type of mom.
Charles Krug 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, $23
You can’t beat the price on this Charles Krug 2023 Sauvignon Blanc, and at a low 12.9% abv, it’s a great daytime spring sipper. Bountiful aromas of lemon blossom and honeydew emanate from the glass, while the palate gives way to richer notes of guava, melon and pear, combined with savory lemongrass. It’s medium-bodied on the palate and full of texture. This is a lovely and classic rendition of this varietal from Napa Valley.
Lang & Reed
2022 Napa Valley Chenin Blanc, $75
The 2022 Lang & Reed Napa Valley Chenin Blanc is a lush and expressive rendition of this varietal. The nose shows off fragrant aromas of ripe stone fruit and honeysuckle. On the palate, this Chenin Blanc offers juicy peach, pear, and savory minerality. As the wine opens, it reveals deeper complexity, with hints of toasted almond and vanilla. The rich texture is balanced by vibrant acidity, culminating in a persistent finish. This is a Chenin Blanc that showcases the exceptional potential of this varietal in Napa Valley.
Perry
Papapietro Perry’s Pinot Noir is always a delight. This 2021 Sonoma Coast bottling offers a bouquet of red cherry and cranberry. The medium-bodied palate leads with flavors of wild raspberry and ripe red cherries, with a hint of minerality and savory forest notes in the background. The variety of flavors give this wine nice layering and depth. It’s fresh and fruit-forward, though never heavy handed, with lots of cool-climate personality.
Pine Ridge Vineyards
2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, $70
The Pine Ridge 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is both rich and elegant. It’s balanced and approachable, blending 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Petite Sirah and 5% Malbec. The Merlot adds a nice silky texture while the Petite Sirah boosts its gorgeous color, and the Malbec helps to ease the grippy tannins. The fruit-forward, chocolatecovered cherry and blueberry notes mix well with the baking spice backbone. It’s a beautiful wine now, but one that will also certainly age well.

Complemented by notes of dark berries, black plum, and vanilla, the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon exudes depth, complexity, and enduring elegance, elevating the dining experience to new heights.
Whether you’re hosting an intimate gathering or seeking to elevate your spring table with an unforgettable dining experience, this pairing promises to captivate the senses and create lasting impressions, celebrating the harmony of flavors and the art of indulgence.
Duck Breast with Blackberry Sauce
Paired with Georges de Latour
Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Ingredients for Duck Breast
• 2 duck breasts, skin scored
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
Ingredients for Blackberry Sauce
• 1 cup fresh blackberries
• 1/2 cup of cooking red wine
• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
• 2 tablespoons honey or sugar (adjust based on tartness of the berries)
• 1 sprig of thyme
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS
Preheat your oven to 400°F. Season the duck breasts with salt and pepper. Heat olive oil in an ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Place the duck breasts skin-side down and cook until the skin is golden and crisp, about 6-8 minutes. Flip the breasts over and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
Transfer the skillet to the oven and roast for 5-7 minutes for medium-rare. Remove from the oven, cover loosely with foil, and let rest for 5 minutes.
While the duck is roasting, combine the blackberries, Cabernet Sauvignon, balsamic vinegar, honey (or sugar), and thyme in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook until the berries break down and the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the seeds, if desired.
Season with salt and pepper.
Slice the duck breasts thinly. Arrange the slices on plates and drizzle with the blackberry sauce. Garnish with fresh blackberries and a sprig of thyme for an elegant presentation.
Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been widely recognized as the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford since its inaugural vintage in 1936. An understanding of this terroir comes from more than 100 years of creating rich, classic Napa Valley wines.

Sonoma Plaza
The historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.
Historic Landmarks
Sonoma Plaza boasts a rich tapestry of historic landmarks that beckon visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s storied past. The Plaza’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Sonoma Barracks, erected in the early 19th century under Mexican rule. These barracks witnessed pivotal moments in California’s history, including the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, commemorated by the Bear Flag Statue, which stands across the street in the park. This stirring monument pays homage to the bold pioneers who sought California's independence. Nearby stands the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California’s 21 missions, founded in 1823. Its graceful adobe architecture and tranquil gardens offer a glimpse into California's Spanish colonial era. Strolling further, one encounters the Toscano Hotel, a testament to Sonoma’s early days as a bustling trade hub. Sonoma Plaza stands as a living testament to California’s diverse heritage and enduring spirit.

Discover the Unique Charm of
Lake County
Wine tasting in Lake County offers a captivating journey through some of California’s hidden gems in the world of winemaking. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes, this region boasts a diverse array of vineyards and wineries, each offering its own unique charm and character. Lava domes, cinder cones, and the world’s largest geothermal field define the area and the terroir. The grapes, and therefore the wine, are uniquely influenced by geology. There are over thirty wineries to explore, with wines to savor. Sip distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in addition to numerous other varietals. The area is so well regarded for grape growing that several prominent names, such as the Jackson Family, Foley Family, Beckstoffer, and Constellation Brands own vineyards in Lake County. From family-owned boutique wineries to larger estates, there's something to suit every palate. The experience goes beyond just tasting wine; it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and hospitality while enjoying breathtaking views of Clear Lake and the surrounding mountains. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, wine tasting in Lake County promises an unforgettable adventure.
