Quintessentially Calistoga
BY LAURA NESS
At the very foot of the valley floor, just before you reach the mudbath capital of wine country, Calistoga, you mighty spy a rather grand looking edifice at the end of a long vine-lined driveway. Framed by dramatic views of the Vaca Mountains, crowned by Mount St. Helena, to the east and the Mayacamas to the west, Bennett Lane Winery feels set quite apart from the rest of Napa.
And apart, it is, indeed. Far from the tourist-busy buzz of downtown Napa, and just a few miles north of the hometown hospitality of St. Helena, Bennett Lane is quintessentially Calistoga, in its location and its flavors. Here, the wines are naturally endowed with soft, silky tannins that don’t require decades of cellaring to achieve. This is the winery for those who want to experience fresh vintages of Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot with definitive structure and finesse, yet layered with supple, pleasurable and engaging fruit. On top of all that drinkability, they are still endowed with aging power.
As you taste through a flight, (choose the Taste of the Napa Valley or Cabernet Vertical if you want to try their 2023 Sangiacomo Chardonnay, $60), you’ll be struck by the wholesome nature of each wine, as well as the tie-in to ancient Rome: each label bears the image of a coin from owner’s Randy and Lisa Lynch’s private collection, on display in the tasting room.
12
WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH
The wines are made from well-kept estate vineyards, both onsite and at the founding couple’s home in Calistoga, along with a carefully chosen portfolio of neighboring vineyards, mostly in the St. Helena area. The couple purchased this property after learning that the custom crush facility here was about to go on the market. In 2003, they opened the tasting room, with GM Stefanie Longton – a Pittsburgh, PA, native, who made her way to California wine country by way of Margaret River, Australia – at the helm.
Winemaker Rob Hunter, who spent years crafting excellent wines at Groth, Keenan, Markham, and Sterling, before coming to Bennett Lane, is a detail-oriented winemaker who keeps a fastidious cellar filled with top-notch coopers to help him achieve his goal of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon. Opt for the Cabernet Exploration if you want a snapshot of the flavors of the Bennett Lane fruit, the Napa Valley blend and the Lynch Family Vineyard fruit. Most of the wines are aged in around 30 percent new French oak, emphasizing the fruit, rather than the wood component.
The 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet stars velvety tannins, and dark chocolate layer cake with raspberry filling, accented by a hint of nutmeg. The mouthwatering 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, is
marked by dark blue fruits married with cherry cola and juicy ripeness, while the stunning singlevineyard 2020 Lynch Family Cabernet Sauvignon is gracefully poised, like a ballerina en pointe, with its alluring rose petal aromas, mouthwatering acid, ripe raspberry cobbler core and a long chocolatey finish.
Bennett Lane recognizes the need for wines that go with every kind of food, from pizza to pot roast, and thus the Lynch’s created the Maximus Red Feasting Wine, a red blend that varies each year. The 2018 Maximus, $55, is underpinned by Cabernet Sauvignon, with a good percentage of Syrah, along with Merlot, Cab Franc, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot. It exudes drinkability, yet demands the respect of a wine named for an Emperor. If you like powerful, peppery and fruity Syrah, try the 2019 Syrah from Atlas Peak. Aromas of blueberry, white pepper, and baked blueberry pie are just the start. It’s a powerhouse. Bennett Lane also produces a White Feasting Wine that blends Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and a touch of Muscat. The wine club enjoys the limited amount of Petite Sirah rosé they make every year. Longton admits she is smitten by this wine, the 2023 version of which was about to be bottled. With its perfect lilac hue, and scents of passionfruit and lychee, it may not last the summer.
With the Mayacamas on one side and the Vaca on the other, you really get the sense of “valley” here at Bennett Lane. It’s not far from Alexander Valley, and it’s a short drive from Santa Rosa over Petrified Forest Road.
3340 CA-128, Calistoga 707-942-6684 | www.bennettlane.com
One of the highlights of a visiting Bennett Lane is its creekside setting, where you can listen to birds flitting about in the riparian corridor along the water and among the vineyard rows. There’s a table with a superb view both of Mount St. Helena and the old Carignane vines on the east side of the property, often reserved by wine club members. Over 100 years old now, these ancient vines produce very little, but their presence reminds us of the farming history of Napa, which was largely settled by Italians. They tended to plant a mix of vines, to hedge their bets. Sitting in the garden outside the tasting room is a delightful way to appreciate the charms of the Calistoga end of Napa, where the growing season is longer, the acids a bit higher, and the tannins smooth as the clay soil the vines call home. With tasting fees starting at $35, several flexible wine club options and complimentary tastings for up to 6 people for wine club members, this is a place you could easily belong.

New ‘Vineyards of Carneros’
Experience
“Vineyards of Carneros” invites guests to explore the cooler facets of Frank Family wines — the winery’s single-vineyard Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and méthode champenoise sparkling wines are all sourced from a region influenced by its proximity to the San Pablo Bay. Characterized by cool temperatures, enveloping fog, and gentle winds, these conditions create an ideal environment for cultivating Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, resulting in wines brimming with acidity, freshness and balance. The Vineyards of Carneros experience is available via reservations on Tock and takes place either inside Frank Family’s charming Craftsman house or outside on the back patio, nestled in the shade of centuries-old Elm trees. The Vineyards of Carneros tasting is offered daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., priced at $60 per person. frankfamilyvineyards.com
Cline Cellars, Sonoma New Label – The Sneak
Cline Family Cellars, is launching a brand new label, The Sneak from Henry Cline – son of Cline Family Cellars founder, Fred Cline. This vibrant wine embodies Henry’s rebellious spirit as the youngest of seven siblings and embraces the funloving philosophy that has been at the heart of Cline Family Cellars for generations. Created from a vineyard of Rhône varieties set to be ripped out, Henry knew these grapes deserved a chance. In an act of rebellion, Henry decided to farm and harvest the vineyards off the clock and craft a red blend from the vines for one final vintage. All it took was a taste of The Sneak for Cline Cellars’ CEO to spare the selected blocks from being replanted and give Henry the green-light to bottle his first vintage.

Foodies will rejoice in a feast for the senses. From bustling hot spots like Morimoto and Oenotri to hidden bistros like Grace’s Table and the Napa Valley Bistro, a world of tastes awaits on almost every corner.
Of course, the wine is the reason for many a visit and downtown Napa does not disappoint. When combined with food, recommendations include Compline, founded by two sommeliers which offers more than 600 wines, in a casual chic environment highlighted by fantastic food. TORC is another favorite. Opened by a husband-andwife team, this is not your typical Napa Valley restaurant. Think great music, a high-energy open kitchen, and the freshest seasonal ingredients all coming together to complement an incredible wine list which includes small format (read, half) bottles of wine.
For quick bites or fun with the kiddos, visit the Oxbow Market for loads of different options. The delicious and popular Model Bakery almost always features a line make a mental note to get there early. Hop over to Gott’s, a local favorite, for a delectable lunch featuring cheeseburgers, Ahi Poke tacos, 100% beef Fearless Franks and hand-spun shakes. Follow that by a stop into the marketplace for (more) ice cream, cupcakes, strolling and shopping.
A bit like a fun adult playground, a visit to Feast it Forward is like none other. Stop by and partake in high end wine tastings from boutique vintners, chef pop-ups and food demonstrations in the amazing filming studio kitchen, live entertainment, a kids’ play area, and so much more.
Head over to Napa Yard at Oxbow Gardens for unique experiences ranging from pig roasts to paella parties, wine and spirits tastings to classes on perfecting your craft cocktail game, there is something for everyone. With a fun, dog and child-friendly vibe and fantastic indoor/outdoor layout, guests can enjoy a seasonally rotating menu of edible options.
As you navigate the downtown area, be sure to stop by the Napa ARTWalk to view a unique collection of juried sculpture created by artists from the West. Similarly, RAD Napa is a public art district along a twomile stretch that runs through Downtown Napa. The city believes that when art becomes part of the fabric of a community, every citizen has the opportunity to see new possibilities and create a better future for everyone. Everyone will be thrilled when the Wine Train chugs by. Give a wave and the conductor may even toot the whistle. Another not-to-be-missed spot, the Napa Toy Museum should be on everyone’s short list. Boasting 500 toys dating from the 1890s to the 1960s, the museum is chock-a-block with nostalgia.
Of course, downtown Napa offers amazing wine tasting opportunities all within walking distance of one another. A few notable examples include Napa’s smallest tasting room, Shadowbox Cellars, JaM Cellars where the music is as good as the wine, Be Bubbly, where sparkling wine takes center stage, and the Alpha Omega Collective’s downtown location. For a more cocktailfocused experience, try ArBARetum of Instagramable libations, the Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar above the Archer Hotel, or the Napa Palisades Saloon for a great cocktail without all the fuss.
Park the car, grab some friends and head to downtown Napa where food, wine, cocktails, and fun are all to be had within a few short blocks of one another.

Petit Soleil
Trena Madrigal always dreamed of owning her own restaurant and when Petite Soleil was on the market, she grabbed her chance and took ownership in October 2022, Madrigal been going strong ever since even winning Best Breakfast from “The North Bay Bohemian” and Best Breakfast in Napa in the “Press Democrat’s” Best of Napa.
Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood just off the beaten path, this hidden gem is bursting with positive energy. Mismatched dishes and thrifted coffee mugs with kitchsy sayings are highlights of the space which is open and bright with a cheerful vibe.
With an emphasis on fresh ingredients, Petit Soleil serves up delicious dishes with nearly everything made in house. Madrigal insists on as much “from-scratch” as possible.
While decisions are often difficult, customer favorites include breakfast standbys like huevos rancheros served in a homemade tortilla bowl with both roja and tomatillo salsa as well as scrambles, omelets and Benedicts, or “bennies,” including a keto version served on ham and veggies rather than an English muffin. For lunch, the grilled chicken sandwich on homemade focaccia with pesto aioli is a big hit. Or try the Petite burger which comes topped with all the fixings.
Whatever you choose, know that Chef Sonia Cuevas Flores stayed the course following the ownership change and remains true to the cause – keeping customers satisfied.

Sonoma Plaza
The historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.
Historic Landmarks
Sonoma Plaza boasts a rich tapestry of historic landmarks that beckon visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s storied past. The Plaza’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Sonoma Barracks, erected in the early 19th century under Mexican rule. These barracks witnessed pivotal moments in California’s history, including the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, commemorated by the Bear Flag Statue, which stands across the street in the park. This stirring monument pays homage to the bold pioneers who sought California's independence. Nearby stands the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California’s 21 missions, founded in 1823. Its graceful adobe architecture and tranquil gardens offer a glimpse into California's Spanish colonial era. Strolling further, one encounters the Toscano Hotel, a testament to Sonoma’s early days as a bustling trade hub. Sonoma Plaza stands as a living testament to California’s diverse heritage and enduring spirit.

Discover the Unique Charm of
Lake County
W/ine tasting in Lake County offers a captivating .journey through some of California’s hidden gems in the world of winemaking. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes, this region boasts a diverse array of vineyards and wineries, each offering its own unique charm and character. Lava domes, cinder cones, and the world’s largest geothermal field define the area and the terroir. The grapes, and therefore the wine, are uniquely influenced by geology. There are over thirty wineries to explore, with wines to savor. Sip distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in addition to numerous other varietals. The area is so well regarded for grape growing that several prominent names, such as the Jackson Family, Foley Family, Beckstoffer, and Constellation Brands own vineyards in Lake County. From family-owned boutique wineries to larger estates, there's something to suit every palate. The experience goes beyond just tasting wine; it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and hospitality while enjoying breathtaking views of Clear Lake and the surrounding mountains. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, wine tasting in Lake County promises an unforgettable adventure.

As you embark on your tasting adventure, you'll encounter a spectrum of flavors unique to the region: bold reds with rich berry notes, crisp whites with hints of citrus and minerality, and robust blends that reflect the rugged charm of the countryside. Winemakers are often on hand to share their insights, offering a glimpse into their craft and the intricacies of winemaking.
Thorn Hill Vineyards is the perfect place to stay while exploring Lake County. The elegant Tuscan-style villa is in the middle of the vineyards. On one side of the Thorn Hill Tasting Room, there are two beautifully appointed private suites. Unwind in the shared living, dining, and kitchen space (well stocked with snacks and breakfast items). This is the perfect getaway accommodation for two couples to share. On the opposite side of the Villa, is a private single suite. Sleep in, enjoy the country quiet, make yourself a fresh breakfast, then walk about 20 steps for your relaxed tasting in the adjacent room, before you go out to explore more of Lake County.
Savor Amy Thorn’s award-winning, small-lot, boutique wines, both whites and reds. And don’t go home without a few bottles of Thorn Hill’s sparkling wine, and their elegant dessert wines.
Winery Tasting Rooms
Boatique Wines and Vineyard Cottages , founded in 2015, boasts one of Lake County’s most spectacular views. Visit for the “boutique experience,” sampling award-winning wines, including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc plus other varietals. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Boatique Winery enhances the overall experience, providing insights into the winemaking process and guiding guests through tastings with warmth and enthusiasm. For the ultimate experience, stay in the vineyards, and book one of Boutique’s comfortable accommodations.

Langtry Farms, and Winery has a romantic, storied history. Lillie Langtry, (b. 1853 on the Isle of Jersey) was a famous British actress and socialite, performing both in England and the United States. In 1888, seeing an ad in a local publication, Lilly purchased a 4,200-acre ranch, founding Langtry Winery, which she owned for 18 years.
The modern-day operation began with the initial 1982 vintage, they have been producing award-winning wines ever since. Whereas mostly Bordeaux varieties are grown, Langtry also grows, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc (named Langtry Lillie), and Chardonnay.
