Everything about this place feels vast: on a bigger scale than most, even for Napa. As you climb Sage Canyon Road to the 1682-acre Somerston Estate in the eastern Vaca range of Napa Valley, unencumbered vistas surround you. The experience is exhilarating. Endless rows of vineyards populate 17 distinct sites and 140 unique blocks, with elevations spanning 800 to 1,650 ft. Roughly 236 acres of vines traverse the steeply rolling hills, this way and that, catching the caress of the sun. This is truly a nature preserve, abundant with birds, deer and sheep, surrounded by thickets and forest. In the winter, a flock of goats grazes the hillsides between the vines. Waterfowl cruise the ponds, while hawks and falcons constantly patrol for gophers. The sun-warmed air and fresh breezes are rejuvenating. And that is the whole idea. Somerstone Estate is no ordinary vineyard experience: it is nature preserved, respected and nurtured.
Remarkably, the estate is very well intact after the Glass Fire burned through the property. Fortunately, damage was largely confined to the edge of the vineyard in certain blocks. “Less than an acre needed to be replanted,” Marketing Director, Melissa Jackson tells us. While the vineyard was once home to 18 varietals, including many that did not fare well here, the varietals now number about a dozen, including Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Zin, Petite Sirah, and the five Bordeaux. “We will add Grenache and Viognier for wine club only wines, too,” says Jackson. Wines are made from these vines for both the Priest Ranch and Somerston labels. Priest Ranch wines can be enjoyed at the tasting room in Yountville, where their new restaurant will eventually debut, but for now, Somerston wines can best be enjoyed where they are born: at the estate property.
At the center is a beautiful 12,000-square-foot old barn that has been transformed into a green facility with some of the most cutting-edge, innovative technology in the world. Driving it is a carbon-neutral CO2 heating and cooling system that operates with zero emissions of hazardous refrigerants. The Somerston team, led by co-founder, Craig Becker, who is also Director of Winemaking and Viticulture, along with winemaker Cody Hurd, aims to build an efficient winery operation that is also truly sustainable. A second winery building will sport a solar roof, enabling them to be selfsufficient and able to operate off the grid, which has become a necessity.
The best way to experience this stunning spot is to attend one of the monthly Winemaker Lunches recently launched at the estate. You’ll not only feast on the handiwork of Estate Executive Chef Dan Solomon, but you will also be treated to an intimate tour of this wild and thrilling slice of nature, minutes from the bustle of Silverado Trail.
The Winemaker Lunch Series will be held on August 18, September 22 and October 20, where Director of Winemaking and Viticulture Craig Becker, Winemaker Cody Hurd and Director of Vineyard Operations Jake Knobloch, will guide guests on an in-depth tour of the estate, getting a closeup look at farming and ecosystem preservation. Following the tour, guests return to the winery for an elevated four-course food and wine experience prepared by Chef Dan, who hails from Chicago, and who will also helm the new fast casual restaurant concept set to open in Yountville this fall. The limited-production Somerston Estate wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and will be paired with dishes like halibut ceviche, dry-aged beef carpaccio and New Zealand swordfish. Each lunch experience takes place from 11 am to 1 pm for $225 per person, and can be booked at Somerston. Lunch Exclusive pricing is available for Somerston Preferred Access members: members@somerstonestate.com.
August 18: As summer progresses, guests will learn about the meticulous preparations involved in readying the vineyard and cellar for the imminent arrival of freshly harvested fruit.
September 22: The splendor of Napa Valley in the fall is the backdrop for the September lunch, where guests will witness the bounty of the region and taste fruit at various stages of ripeness.
October 20: The final lunch in the series coincides with the exciting harvest period, offering guests a glimpse into the bustling winery operations, a tour of the facilities, and interaction with Somerston’s dedicated cellar crew for a deeper understanding of top-tier wine production.
Guests can also schedule a Private Group Lunch/Dinner on another date, where an exclusive four-course experience will be crafted just for you with current releases and library wines. This exclusive and unrivaled experience is available year-round for groups of eight or more, for $350 per person. To make reservations, visit: SomerstonPrivate
Another way to access this outdoor splendor is to sign up for an ATV vineyard tour with wine tasting and a charcutiere box by Panevino. This experience can be reserved three times daily, at 10am, noon and 2pm. The 90-minute by reservationonly experience is $100 per person, for 1 to 8 people at a time. Make reservations online SomerstonTour or email: visit@somerstonestate.com.

The Napa and Sonoma counties are famous for their cuisine as well as their wines.
You will discover wines from grapes that originated all over the world, such as in Spain, Italy, France, South America, and Australia to name a few. The area’s cuisine also represents a variety of countries and cultures. Though California, Italian and Mexican cuisine may be the most familiar, you can experience a countless selection of creative and memorable international foods here. Let’s take a look at a few of the many choices that beckon your palate for culinary exploration.
Welcome to a fun, enticing Spanish adventure; you will find the flavors, spices, and aromas dancing the flamenco in your mouth! Best shared with friends because of the many tapas (such as Bocadillo de cochinello – 12-hour roasted pork belly), you’ll be hard-pressed not to overorder. But don’t forget one of their Paella for the table! And with your meal enjoy the quintessential Spanish drink: Sangria!
Ayawaska RestobarReimagined Mexican food ... south of the border, down Mexico Way – Catherin Bergen has truly created an exceptional niche in her imaginative and salivating conception of Mexican food. Each dish is an artistic and gourmet delight. My favorite: The Dungeness Crab Taco but then, the rotisserie chicken taco will redefine your notion of “taco.” And don’t forget a margarita or tequila flight. The dishes and drinks at C Casa will call you back again and again!!
Tarla Mediterranean Grill is an exciting culinary voyage into the foods of Turkey and Greece. Saganaki is a must (Oppah!), and maybe also a classic gyro, moussaka, or kebab. Tarla is a Mediterranean delight in foods and flavors.
Ayawaska will take you on an epicurean adventure to Peru! Come with a group so you can share the tapas (small plates). Choose from an assortment of cevices (my favorite is the Ceviche de Atun Oriental), and then pick a variety of empanadas. A must-order is the Tequenos de Cangrejo. There are mouthwatering main entrees, but honestly, I can’t get past sharing so many tasty small plates with friends.
“A feast for all senses,” prepares authentic culinary cuisine with stories of China. As plates are set down in front of you, you may find it hard to disturb the imaginative presentation – true food artistry in sight and taste.
Yak and Yeti (Nepalese and Indian), described as “Owned by the Sherpas originally from Mt. Everest region, Yak and Yeti dishes mainly include recipes that fuel trekkers along their way to Everest Base Camp.” Join a 15-day Mt. Everest Base Camp trek with the owners for a true Himalayan adventure!
Morimoto Napa fires on all cylinders, as it should, being one of Celebrity Chef Masahara Morimoto’s restaurants bearing his name. High expectations are set for décor, location, food, creativity, service and ambiance – you won’t be disappointed. During nice weather, sit outside, along the riverwalk to enjoy your surroundings. The menu is extensive, so order away. A few personal recommendations: Hamachi tacos and soft-shelled crab rolls. After that, just go for it, explore and savor the flavors!
LaSalette has been offering up creative Portuguese cuisine for 25 years. Using exotic flavors and seasonings, Chef Manuel Azevedo offers a cornucopia of selections described as “new Portuguese” cuisine. A favorite of mine is the wood-roasted oven octopus with enticing flavors and oh-so-tender. And, sticking with seafood, try the Caldeirada (Portuguese Fisherman’s Stew). Yum!
Guisos in Healdsburg will amaze you. Described as Latin fusion, Chef Carlos creates dishes that are an intricate tapestry blending Caribbean and Salvadorian cuisines and flavors. Whether you are a party of two or more, you will want to order a selection of dishes to share. Consider the Media Noche Cubano (OMG), and a larger main (to share), the Camorones Borrachos. But don’t stop there! The more people, the more dishes, and the more you will excite your senses .by exploring international flavors you never could have imagined. Enjoy the delights at this intimate, lively, delicious restaurant.
Don’t stop yet, take a look at some of the other global fare that awaits your discovery:
• Galpão Gaucho Brazilian Steakhouse (Napa) is inspired by the Gaucho culture and authentic dining tradition of the Brazilian cowboy.
• La Taberna (Napa) serves up Spanish cuisine with a take on a classic modern Spanish Tavern.
• Osha Thai (Napa) offers award-winning Thai dishes and flavors, highlighted by the artistic presentation.
• ZuZu (Napa) is a beloved Spanish-inspired restaurant, featuring an extensive list of cold and hot tapas, and paella! Make sure you save room for dessert.
• Animo (Sonoma), described as Basque-Korean, became an instant hit when chef Joshua Smookler opened his restaurant about a year ago. You will find the food and décor complement each other, homey, lively, and fun as you dine on the foods and flavors that chef and his wife love to eat themselves. Spaces fill up fast, so be certain to make reservations in advance.
• Hana Sake Bar & Tasting Room (Rohnert Park) prepares “a sea and farm-to-table experience.” From traditional sushi to comforting foods and contemporary flavors, experience “a taste of Tokyo.”
• Ramen Gaijin is where you want to head to enjoy creative, fresh ramen at this Michelin Bib Gourmand designated restaurant.
• Tasca Tasca (Portuguese: Tapas and wine bar). With a Portuguese-only wine list, paired with creative “new Portuguese cuisine,” let your sense go wild with Food, Music, and Wine!

Having first opened its doors in July 1993, this year Napa-based Frank Family Vineyards is celebrating 30 years of outstanding hospitality and dedication to quality winemaking. As part of this milestone, the winery will release a limited-edition 30th Anniversary Lady Edythe Brut Rosé premiering at select anniversary celebrations in the Hamptons, New York City, Las Vegas and California. “For this special occasion, we’ve made a tête de cuvée late disgorged rosé bottling from the 2015 vintage named Lady Edythe in honor of my mother, Edythe Frank. With only 1,000 bottles produced, it is a rare gem and is absolutely phenomenal,” says founder Rich Frank.
Over the years Frank Family has consistently been ranked among the most popular wines in America’s top restaurants by the Wine & Spirits Annual Restaurant Poll, has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity through their “Frank for a Cause” program, and has hosted countless celebrities, sports figures and dignitaries. With the recent addition of the Miller House, a sophisticated hospitality barn that offers elevated experiences, and the continued hands-on involvement of Founders Rich and Leslie Frank, as well as General Manager and Winemaker Todd Graff, it’s no question that Frank Family Vineyards remains a leading producer and must-visit winery in the Napa Valley.
“For three decades Frank Family has had the privilege of cultivating memories, experiences and connections with people all over the world,” says Leslie. “What started with the purchase of a classic Tudor home in the Rutherford AVA has evolved into a remarkable journey that we are excited to see continue to grow.”
Rich and Leslie Frank will then head on the road to host guests in the Hamptons in August and New York City in October before having a grand finale with an elegant cocktail party in Las Vegas this fall. Visit
FrankFamilyVineyards.com/Events for the complete event series dates and details.
In keeping with the Franks’ strong commitment to philanthropy, each event will feature an auction of the 30th Anniversary Lady Edythe Brut Rosé in a stunning, special edition cellar box with an engraved mother of pearl Champagne saber. All proceeds from the auctions will be donated to various charities including K9s For Warriors and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
“This milestone would not be possible without our loyal members, guests, friends and fans,” adds Leslie. “They are the ones who truly helped build Frank Family into what it is today. We want to dedicate our 30th anniversary to everyone who has visited us at the winery, chosen us on a wine list or picked up a bottle of Frank Family at the store. This year is our chance to say, ‘thank you.’ We want to create every opportunity to celebrate with us!”
The 30th Anniversary Lady Edythe Brut Rosé (SRP $150) comes from the 2015 vintage and is a tribute to the winery’s sparkling wine legacy that dates back to the late 1950s when the historic property was home to one of California’s earliest sparkling wine producers, Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars. Decades later, Frank Family continues to honor the heritage of the iconic winery by handcrafting sparkling wines according to the méthode champenoise under the direction of winemaker and general manager Todd Graff, who has been at the helm of winemaking at Frank Family since 2003. The wine is a delightful blend of 66% Chardonnay and 34% Pinot Noir sourced from Frank Family’s esteemed Lewis Vineyard in Napa-Carneros, the wine spent six years aging sur lie before disgorgement. Following the 30th Anniversary Celebrations, the wine will be made available online and in the tasting room.

Sauvignon Blanc from Napa is always a treat and this expression from Clif Family is no exception. The Rte Blanc boasts classic Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc aromas of ripe stone fruit and white flowers. On the palate, crisp green apple and honeydew mingle with Meyer lemon and peaches. It’s a bright and vivacious wine with a nice line of acidity — perfect for a warm summer evening.
While Joseph Phelps is well-known for their Napa Cabernet, their sparkling wine from the Sonoma Coast offers a refreshing changeup. Only produced in select years, the 2017 Ovation Sparkling Wine is comprised of 78% Chardonnay and 22% Pinot Noir from their estate vineyards in Freestone. It saw an incredible 3.8 years en tirage and for that reason, it boasts a wonderfully creamy mouthfeel. Lovely aromas of green apple, Meyer lemon, and brioche abound; on the palate, crisp acidity is balanced by the creamy texture, and flavors of sweet lemon and peach show off a beautiful profile.
This bottling is the estate’s signature rosé and it offers a ton of quality for the price-point. It’s a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, bringing forward ripe red berry notes with elements of citrus and lively acidity. It’s made in a brut style with just 1.15% residual sugar and spends 18 months en tirage. This NV Brut Rosé from Mumm Napa is crisp and fresh while still offering rich texture and a silky mouthfeel. Break out the oysters for a delightfully fresh pairing.
Flavors of fruit and wet stones are such a nice coupling in a crisp, white wine and these two flavors are married together beautifully in Seghesio’s 2022 Vermentino. This bottling comes from Russian River Valley so it retains a lots of fresh acidity in its fuller-bodied profile. Aromas of honeysuckle, white peach, and ripe pear give way to a richtextured palate with flavors of stone fruit and a pleasant undertone of minerality. This is a beautiful wine to pair with fresh seafood.

The Alliance anticipates another sold-out event with more than 400 attendees and 25+ wineries participating the Wind to Wine Festival on August 5 at SOMO Village. New this year is the addition of satellite Wind to Wine events hosted by individual vintners and allowing attendees to participate in intimate winemaker dinners and hosted experiences.
“Once again the Wind to Wine Festival will feature the AVA’s signature varietals – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah – with additional wines offered from winemakers who push the cool-climate envelope with their Albariño, Pinot Gris, Grenache, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others,” said Tom Gendall, Director of Winemaking for Cline Cellars and President of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance Board of Directors. “Over the last year, the number of 90+ Point Wines from the AVA has substantially increased, and many will be offered for tasting at the festival. In addition, several winemakers who do not have tasting rooms will participate, so this is a rare opportunity to taste their wines before purchasing,” Gendall said.
A menu of delicious bites selected to complement the wines will be served along with an array of artisanal cheeses from Point Reyes Cheese Company, whose dairy
farm is located along the Pacific near the edge of the Petaluma Gap AVA. Back by popular demand, guests will be entertained and informed by a story corner, featuring tips and tales from Petaluma Gap winemakers and growers. And the venue’s Redwood Grove will be the site for live music, enjoyed under the shade of the towering 80-food redwoods.

The beloved live-fire culinary experience is back and ready to heat things up!
Held on a rural ranch, a mile inland from the spectacular Sonoma Coast, the Bodega Seafood, Art & Wine Festival is a sophisticated, yet down-home, event unlike any other. It has garnered the reputation of being one of the premier art, wine, microbrew and food festivals in California. The picturesque Watts Ranch, in the village where Alfred Hitchcock once filmed his classic thriller, The Birds, is home to this annual benefit, which attracts thousands of foodies, arts appreciators, wine and beer fans and music lovers, many who’ve been coming since its inception in 1994.
The festival is a food lover’s dream, especially for those who love seafood. Calamari, crab cakes, oysters and chowders, more than thirty seafood dishes will be offered up by more than a dozen different vendors. Non-fish eaters will have no trouble finding delicious vegetarian options, meat, chicken and sweet treats galore.
The wine and microbrewed beer tasting is always a popular part of the event. With 40-plus companies pouring their creations, the tasting tent rocks all weekend long. Offering a mix of known brands, plus many small, up and coming companies, it’s the ideal locale to find your next favorite drink. The cost is $30 for a commemorative glass and 6 tastes. Additional tastes are $3. Wine and beer by the bottle is available for purchase from some of our companies, so you can sample and then take some home with you. There’s also a Beer/Wine Booth to purchase drinks by the glass.
The quality of the art and fine craft is unrivaled in Sonoma County and beyond. This juried show attracts artisans from throughout California and other parts of the country. The festival appeals to a broad range of attendees, providing a mix of higher end fine art and craft along with more moderately priced craft. The festival producers are
artists themselves and know the ins and outs of doing shows from both sides, having traveled around the country doing craft fairs for more than 30 years.
Three stages of entertainment give festival-goers a full day of musical and non-musical diversion. Headliners this year are Roy Rogers and the Delta Rhythm Kings (Saturday), and Wonderbread 5 (Sunday), along with Spike Sikes and his Awesome Hotcakes, Tom Rigney and Flambeau, Michelle Lambert and many others. Come enjoy juggling and puppetry as well, plus a big dance floor, making this a festival filled with dancing, laughter and fun.
This is a great family event with kid’s activities, including pony rides and a petting zoo, as well as interactive environmental displays from our beneficiary, Stewards of the Coast & Redwoods.
A portion of the event proceeds supports two vital non-profits — Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, which works in partnership with the California State Parks in the Russian River/Sonoma Coast region, and the Bodega Volunteer Fire Department.
Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 26, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 27. Admission is $20 in advance for adults, $25 at gate. Discounts offered for seniors, teens, first responders and military; under 12 are free. Special combo tickets for entry and tasting are available via advance tickets: https://www.simpletix.com/e/27thannual-bodega-seafood-art-wine-festiv-tickets-126125.
Watts Ranch is located at 16855 Bodega Highway in the village of Bodega. The site is less than two hours from San Francisco and many other Bay Area locations, so the festival is an ideal add-on to plans, if visiting northern California at the end of August.

Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/ or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect.
Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country.
Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:
• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved.
• Understand that there may be a time limit
• Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs.
• If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person.
• If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly.
• Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)
• Be flexible
• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.
• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine.
“Good wine” is what you like. Period.
• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast.
• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.
• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!
• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?
• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help.
• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle).
• Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).
• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and best not to wear white!
• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.
• Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.
• Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.
• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery
• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.
• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.
• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
• Enjoy yourself!
