Destination: West Sonoma County

Discover, relax, dine, and meander through pastoral landscapes, exploring the

“nooks and crannies”of this magical area

West Sonoma County is renowned for its lush landscapes, rolling vineyards, and charming small towns such as Sebastopol and Bodega Bay. The area offers a delightful blend of outdoor activities, boutique shops and wineries. Farm-to-table restaurants provide a taste of Sonoma's renowned agricultural bounty, making every meal a celebration of local flavors. Whether you’re wandering through artisanal markets, savoring fine wine, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, West Sonoma County invites a peaceful escape into a world of natural charm and relaxed sophistication.

Begin your adventure in Sebastopol, a convenient location to use as your base for exploration.

The Florence Avenue Art Walk is simply a MUST! This Sebastopol neighborhood boasts several blocks where every home has a display of fun, funny, whimsical, creative, kooky “trash art.” Patrick Amiot and Brigette Laurent have created this outdoor gallery of amusement, and it’s there free of charge to give laughs and smiles. Drive slowly down the street, or park and walk as you marvel at this outdoor display of quirky eccentricity. As you stroll, take in the larger-than-life rocker, the princely frog, the pink pig, the wicked witch, and dozens of characters on this three-block outdoor display. This will, simply said, make you happy.

Don Sonderling is a freelance writer covering California’s unique lifestyle of wine and food adventures from Ventura up through Napa, Sonoma, and beyond. He may be reached at: donsonderling@gmail.com

SCULPTURE BY PATRICK AMIOT | SONOMACOUNTY.COM

The Barlow outdoor shopping mall is just a few minutes drive away. Forget any concept of a “shopping mall.” This was originally an applepacking plant where you will now find everything from wine and beer tasting to places to eat, arts and crafts, specialty gear, and gift ideas with a local flavor. On the third Sunday of the month (August 18, September 15, October 20, and November 17) hop from vintage and antique vendors, local makers, jewelry, and plants while enjoying music from local vinyl DJ's! Stop…park…walk…explore. The Barlow is just plain fun … it’s exciting, eclectic, hip, and full of energy.

Speaking of energy, you may want to make a stop at Endless Energy Crystals where you will find all sorts of crystals, geodes, and specialty jewelry. Healing, energy, calming, and good luck are some of the properties these crystals and stones may give out. Drop in and check it out.

William Cofield Cheesemakers is a producer of British-style cheeses and offer carefully curated charcuterie boards. If you love cheese, trust me, you want to go here for the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich and cup of tomato soup! Friends at UC Davis, Keith Adams and Rob Hunter went on to follow different paths: Keith launched Alemar Cheese in Minnesota while Rob went on to pursue a career in winemaking. Rob is currently the head winemaker at the highly acclaimed Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga. Keith and Rob re-united, forming William Cofield Cheesemakers. Coming full circle, a friendship re-united, where artisan wines, cheese and friendship simply and perfectly blended together.

When you are done, wander over to Two Dog Night Creamery! If you are an ice cream addict (like I am), savor ice cream like you never have before, locally sourced ingredients go into Two Dog Night’s delicious farmto-cone, ice cream ... “creamy” being the operative descriptor. Offering a variety of seasonal flavors, they also have their “standard” menu: I recommend a scoop (or two) of the dark chocolate peanut butter! Yum! You’ll also have a variety of other food and beverage choices at The Barlow: Pizza, sushi, oysters, tacos, beer, wine … explore your inner foodie. For music, food, energy, excitement, drink, and a great place to stroll and take in the flavor of West Sonoma County, a visit to The Barlow is a must!

Enjoy A Scenic Drive To The Coast

Bodega Bay was perhaps made most famous by the 1963 horror movie The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock. This is a quintessential seaside fishing village where you can relish the surrounding coastal areas, hike, shop, eat, and of course, marvel at unparalleled ocean views, simply losing yourself in the natural beauty of the Sonoma Coast.

Plan to stop over a night or two in Bodega Bay, and pamper yourself at The Inn At The Tides

Treat yourself to an elegant stay, overlooking the coast showing off exquisite views, with luxurious lodging. Experience gourmet dining at The Tides Wharf Restaurant (the backdrop for scenes in The Birds). Pamper, mesmerize, and hypnotize yourself enjoying the vista, walking on the beach, and seeing nature at its best. Bodega Bay is simply a gem on California’s coast.

Explore West Sonoma County. There is something for everyone, any age, which will entice you, make you smile, calm your soul, and put the full display of nature’s wonders and the area’s friendliness and hospitality at your fingertips.

Continue Your Road-Trip Adventure

Head to Marin County. Once on the coast, stop to pick up (or sit down and eat) fresh, delicious oysters at Tony’s Seafood on Shoreline Highway in Marshall, on Tomales Bay. Tony’s has a long-storied history as an iconic fresh seafood gathering place. Family-owned for three generations, Hog Island Oyster Company purchased Tony’s in 2017, preserving the history, and family friendliness, continuing to serve up fresh seafood (enjoy Oysters from right there from Tamales

Bay). Come on a Sunday from 5 to 7pm for oysters and seafood while listening to music by local musicians. Sit out on the deck on a sunny day, with the bay right in front of you, or inside, viewing the sparkling waters through the large picture windows. Pick from a selection of responsibly raised oysters, which vary by the season, and other mouthwatering seafood. You can’t get fresher! Tony’s has been a local classic go-to for forty years.

THE BEST DAY EVER

WITH TRANSCENDENCE THEATER CO.

Stars from Broadway in Sonoma share their favorite spots to visit before the show.

As Transcendence Theatre Company kicked off its 2024 season with Summertime! at the Field of Dreams last month, we polled the cast and creative team about how to make the most of a day in Sonoma. While some cast members were visiting Sonoma for the first time, we asked those who have returned year after year how to have the Best Day Ever before enjoying the Best Night Ever with Transcendence. With two more performances this summer, including Dancing in the Street (August 15-18) and The Gala (September 19-22), there is plenty of time to explore.

CAST FAVORITES

Start your day at the heart of Sonoma —Sonoma Plaza. Grab a coffee and a delicious breakfast before you stroll the charming shops. Popular stops include the Sunflower Caffé, where avocado toast is a favorite, and Basque Boulangerie Café, known for its mouthwatering pastries.

One returning cast member shared, “I love going to Sonoma Plaza for food, but especially for sweets.“ Broadway stars have a soft spot for The Chocolate Cow, especially on hot summer days when ice cream is a must. Another sweet treat is found at Sweet Scoops, where artisanal ice cream flavors delight visitors.

If you’re craving Italian, Della Santina is a top pick, with a menu featuring handmade pasta, rotisserie meats, and daily fresh seafood. The historic Swiss Hotel has a charming atmosphere in which to enjoy Italian-American food. For a more eclectic, home-cooked feel, Valley Bar and Bottle offers simple, seasonal California cuisine. But if you’re staying the weekend, consider visiting for brunch, when you can try favorite dishes like French toast with apricot butter and burrata and tomato tartine.

SUNFLOWER CAFFE
VALLEY BAR + BOTTLE
Eating in Sonoma is my favorite pastime. But no matter what you decide, there is no wrong answer, as one star shared, I love all of it! It's a magical place.

Many cast members, hailing from New York, can’t get enough of California’s Mexican cuisine. El Molino Central is a lunch favorite, with tamales and tacos that hit the spot. You can also find them at La Casa Restaurant and Bar, which is known for its fine Mexican food and great margaritas. Elsewhere in the plaza, Maya Restaurant celebrates the food and culture of the Mayan region of Mexico, with vibrant, spicy flavors influenced by European and Caribbean cuisines. Hands down the best chips and salsa ... ask for an agua fresca margarita using the fresh juice of the day such as blackberry, prickly pear, or watermelon.

DINNER BEFORE THE SHOW

Broadway in Sonoma ticketholders are also invited to bring a picnic to the Field of Dreams. Gold ticketholders can enjoy their picnic in the lounge starting at 5:30 p.m. The cast recommends grabbing a slice at Slice Shack by Mary’s or bringing takeaway from the new El Dorado Cantina, which boasts a Mexican and Latin-inspired menu curated by Chef Armando Navarro.

If picnicking is not for you, many Transcendence ticketholders choose to enjoy an early dinner before making their way to the Field of Dreams. For reservations, consider all-time cast favorite the girl & the fig, where you can enjoy food that is fresh, healthy, and bursting with flavor. Or experience the flavors of Portugal at the tapas restaurant Tasca Tasca.

AFTER PARTY

After the show, you might spot some familiar faces at Steiner’s on the plaza for a pint or enjoying a nightcap. For artisan craft cocktails, you can’t beat The Beacon, “your new favorite bar.” If you’re visiting from out of town, stay at the rejuvenating Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. Or, check out one of the nearby hotels that partner with Transcendence to offer ticketholders special rates.

WHEN IN WINE COUNTRY …

No visit to Sonoma is complete without indulging in some wine tasting. Favorites among the cast include Benzinger, Sebastiani, Buena Vista Winery (California’s first premium winery), Sixteen 600, St. Francis, Kunde, Viansa, and Chateau St. Jean. Transcendence partners with tour operators PushPak Motors and La Belle Vie Tours, offering ticketholders special offers.

In addition to wine tasting on their off days, cast members also enjoy catching a film at the Sebastiani Theatre or taking a guided tour through the gardens at Cornerstone Sonoma, an ever-changing botanical wonderland.

Whether indulging in the local cuisine, sipping on world-class wine, or simply soaking in the charm of Sonoma Plaza, every moment spent here contributes to the Best Day Ever before enjoying the Best Night Ever with Transcendence Theatre Company.

Sonoma Plaza

The historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.

Historic Landmarks

Sonoma Plaza boasts a rich tapestry of historic landmarks that beckon visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s storied past.

The Plaza’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Sonoma Barracks, erected in the early 19th century under Mexican rule. These barracks witnessed pivotal moments in California’s history, including the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846, commemorated by the Bear Flag Statue, which stands across the street in the park. This stirring monument pays homage to the bold pioneers who sought California's independence. Nearby stands the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of California’s 21 missions, founded in 1823. Its graceful adobe architecture and tranquil gardens offer a glimpse into California's Spanish colonial era. Strolling further, one encounters the Toscano Hotel, a testament to Sonoma’s early days as a bustling trade hub. Sonoma Plaza stands as a living testament to California’s diverse heritage and enduring spirit.

Just behind the Plaza is Depot Park, located on the bike path with Sonoma Valley History Museum, bocce, petanque and volleyball courts, picnic tables and playground. Friday mornings you’ll find the Farmers Market in the parking lot. Tuesday evenings, May through September, the Farmers Market also takes place in the Plaza with live music and food trucks.

Thorn Hill Vineyards Tasting Room & Villa Suites A Taste of Tuscan Luxury

Imagine the sensory delight of being surrounded by vineyards, feeling a gentle breeze caressing your skin, and relaxing on your private patio while savoring an exquisite glass of wine or bubbles as the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the landscape.

This doesn’t have to be a dream. This can be your reality when you stay at Thorn Hill Vineyards, relaxing in one of their elegant Italian-themed suites.

Pure Perfection

Amy Thorn, winemaker and proprieter of Thorn Hill offers wine country explorers a unique experience. This is what memories are made of. Thorn Hill creates wines reflecting the region’s soil or “terroir.” A selection of reds, whites, dessert wines, and some very special bubbles will please your palate and senses. The wine expresses the unique terroirs from where they are sourced, especially with the Volcanic Rock Cabernet Sauvignon!

Winery Tasting Rooms

Compliment your tasting experience by staying at the Thorn Hill Villa. The Villas are understated luxury and in a perfect location to explore the region. There is a single suite (the Champagne suite) or, for a couple, a double suite with a kitchen, dining, and living room area, as well as the Chardonnay and Cabernet Suites. Thoughtfully and elegantly furnished in an Italian décor, including Murano glass chandeliers, original art, and jacuzzi tubs to relax in after a day of wine tasting and exploring. Kick back and explore the area for several days.

As Thorn Hill’s wines express the terroir and winemaker Amy Thorn’s vision, the villas offer the guest a place to call “home,” with Tuscan elegance just waiting for you.

And, for that special occasion (and aren’t all visits like this special?), ask about Thorn Hill’s concierge services, wine-paired dinners, and massages. Take advantage of being pampered.

Return to your suite in the afternoon or evening, relax on the patio with a glass of wine, mesmerized by the surrounding vista. Listen to “the sounds of silence” as night falls and millions of sparkling diamonds wink at you

Spoil yourself at Thorn Hill Vineyards with wine, luxury, and hospitality in the heart of California’s Lake County.
