The Art of Wine and Food Pairing
At Sequoia Grove Winery, we believe that Cabernet Sauvignon and other red wines work with a much wider variety of dishes than the typical red wine, red meat “rules” would permit. Our philosophy for wine and food pairings focuses on making small adjustments to prepared dishes in order to preserve or enhance the flavors of the wine. But don’t just take our word for it – come see for yourself! Settle in as you enjoy tasting top-tier Single Vineyard and Reserve red wines expertly paired with a variety of cuisines prepared by in-house wine and food expert, Chef Britny Maureze.

Anaba’s wind turbine stands tall above the towering palms as you drive towards the tasting room, flanked by the winemaking barn to the left and pickleball courts and vineyards to the right. Every element of the property is designed to manage the impact of these two driving natural forces — sun and wind. Arriving at the tasting room, a generous patio with tables shaded by giant industrial-strength umbrellas, provides the perfect spot to contemplate either the Elements Tasting ($45) or the Legacy Tasting ($65). Or perhaps to enjoy culinary treats, including innovative food and wine pairings, prepared by global traveler Chef, Maria Lynn.
Beyond a windproof glass wall stretches a vast open patio, generously furnished
with comfy seating and fire pits for enjoying the tranquil view of the surrounding hills, where dairy cows still graze. The Anaba setting is upscale pastoral: the vibe is casual yet carefully curated, providing a relaxed atmosphere in which to recharge your batteries and enjoy some truly excellent wines.
Inside, Anaba’s newly constructed Vintners House, is stunning. Designed to be a warm and welcoming extension of Proprietor John Sweazeys’ family home, the space boasts high ceilings and a massive fireplace. It sets the stage for the main performance, the wines, crafted by longtime winemaker Katy Wilson and her team, including assistant winemaker Ian McClellan, who met Katy more than 10 years ago as a harvest
intern, and has now been on the production team with Anaba for over seven years. Sourced from some of the area’s best vineyards, Anaba wines echo both the land from which they come, and the sure and steady hand of an experienced winemaker who learned to operate a tractor on her family’s Central Valley walnut farm, long before she took driver’s ed. Farming is in Katy’s blood, which makes her a natural for making wine that shows off the personalities of each vineyard.
As Winemaker at Anaba, Katy Wilson crafts world-class Rhône- and Burgundianstyle wines that showcase the best of Sonoma County. Katy’s personal grower relationships with some of Sonoma’s most prestigious vineyards, coupled with her attention to detail is critical. From walking the vineyards
and evaluating optimal harvest timing, to determining the best-performing blocks that will ultimately supply the fruit for Anaba’s esteemed portfolio of wines, every wine Katy oversees is tended to with her singular precision and care.
Katy joined Anaba in 2014. Her devotion to the land and passion for winemaking is contagious. She believes in letting the vineyard speak for itself, with minimal intervention. The result is a portfolio of elegant, sophisticated, and balanced wines that showcase the truest expression of each varietal.
The Vintners House tasting room overlooks the new Estate plantings of Picpoul. This year will be the first harvest from the vineyards. Picpoul has been a longtime favorite of Anaba’s members. Owner John Sweazey has
2021 Turbine Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, (12.3%, $40): sourced from Sonoma Coast vineyards, done in 100% stainless steel. Lively lemonade and biscuit meet green papaya, lime and green apple, creating a crisp and lipsmacking expression of coastal Chardonnay.
2022 Turbine Grenache Rosé (12.5%, $38): from the Landa and Flora Marie vineyards, this juicy wine is packed starfruit, strawberry lemonade, papaya, mango and tangerine.
2019 Pinot Noir, Wild Cat Mountain Vineyard (13.5%, $74): from a vineyard above Sonoma Raceway at 1200ft owned by the MacRostie family. Meaty and earthy, with dried currant, apple butter, clove and nutmeg.
Culinary Offerings and Private Events
Whet your appetite with Chef Maria Lynn’s culinary program, forged from global experiences in Nambia, as well as Manresa Bread in Los Gatos, the girl & the fig and Sur La Table. Her cuisine will focus on seasonality and weekly specials, offering more in-depth forays into the marriage of wine and food. A new two-course pairing will soon roll out, taking the Anaba tasting experience to a new level.

had a passion for Rhône varieties since the 1970s when he traveled throughout France. He has been a proponent of bringing these varieties to Sonoma County for many years. Not only did he recently plant Picpoul at Anaba’s organically farmed Estate, but he also teamed up with four other small vineyards in Sonoma to plant more Picpoul as well as Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Grenache, and Cinsault. All of these properties are also organically farmed.
“We are looking forward to the first harvest of our Estate Picpoul this year!”
The eye-catching new packaging for Anaba’s Turbine line of wines, featuring the same original watercolor in different shades to differentiate the wines, is also reflective of the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship. “For the Turbine line, we are using the lightest possible glass and no capsules. Our Estate is 100% carbon neutral now, and working toward carbon storage next,” says Katy.

Napa and Sonoma counties offer a plethora of farm-to-table restaurants. These foods are fresh, organic, healthy, locally grown, and sourced from farm, ranch, or sea to the plate in front of you. Here are just a handful of examples where you will taste the difference fresh makes.
The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” is especially true when you first go onto the Barndiva website. The picture, beautifully displayed, shows an assortment of fresh vegetables, herbs fish, and edible flowers, with the caption “Eat the View.” The small family farm from is the cornucopia for all things fresh, delicious, and beautiful that grace the tables to end up on your fork at Barndiva. The Anderson Valley is an especially important area for sourcing sustainably farmed fruits and vegetables where “fresh and organic” are the buzzwords. It’s no wonder that in 2021, 2022 and 2023 Barndiva has been honored with a Michelin star rating. All your senses with come alive when you visit and dine at Barndiva.
“Farm to table” has become a standard buzzword in dining over the last quarter century. But it’s the girl and the fig that were instrumental in defining what “farm” to table or fork really meant. Imagine in 1997 walking into a restaurant and seeing arugula salad on the menu! What? But that’s what you would have seen at the newly opened the girl & the fig. Sondra Bernstein’s vision was to show off the bounty of the area, and to do that she started purchasing directly from local farmers. The concept grew exponentially, and twenty-six years later you find dishes prepared from fresh, healthy seasonal ingredients. For Sondra, their food is all about “authenticity, seasonality, and simplicity.”
Don’s “go-to” when dining here? The charcuterie, featuring house-cured meats is a can’t miss, and the signature fig and arugula salad. After that? well, throw a dart. This iconic, trend-setting Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand restaurant is a must on your farm-to-table journey.
When you talk about “farm to table” you can’t get much closer to fresh from the source than at Brix! On 16 acres with more than a dozen raised planter boxes, growing all sorts of vegetables and herbs, and surrounded by fruit and citrus trees, Brix epitomizes fresh picked, fresh served, fresh delights. The menu changes with seasonal availability from their gardens and orchard. A staple for me (season permitting) is the fresh tempura green beans! This month, watch for garden fresh ratatouille, a vegan creamy tomato and squash soup, and other delicious creations from Executive Chef Cary Delbridge.
Come eat, socialize, and experience the dream of Marjorie and Jevon. Supporting local farms and purveyors, seasonal produce comes from local organically grown farmers plus their home garden. Goat cheeses are from a new artisanal cheese maker in Bodega Bay (Mt. Eitan). The focus is on sustainable, fresh, healthy, and organic. Jevon and Marjorie’s goal is simple: To Provide Damn Fine Food! And to be social.
Bistro Don Giovanni has been a favorite Napa Valley eating destination for more than twenty-five years. Sitting inside surrounded by freshly picked floral arrangements, or outside, surrounded by greenery, including the restaurant’s gardens, you instantly feel at ease and welcome. The menu changes frequently, depending on what is fresh from the garden or available from local farmers. Fresh, sustainably farmed organic vegetables, and organic meats, including house-made pasta and breads are ready for your enjoyment. If in season, try the fig pizza! Buon Appetito!
Gravenstein Grill was voted Sonoma County’s Best Farm-to-Table (AND best outdoor restaurant) in 2023 by The Press Democrat. Gravenstein’s works with a substantial number of small area farms, ranches, creameries, cheese companies, dairies, and orchards to secure the freshest, healthiest available ingredients for their delicious menu. As they state on their menu: “Meat and produce locally sourced.” You may want to end your meal with some Screamin’ Mimi’s Ice Cream, a local shop where everything is made in-house from locally sourced ingredients. Fresh, healthy, local, and delicious for your dining pleasure.
Chef Mauro Pando brings healthy, fresh creative cuisine to Napa inspired by his travels around the world. Committed to using as many organic products as possible, Chef sources chickens that are hormone and antibioticfree, part of the “never ever program.” Red meat is Akaushi Kobe, again hormone and antibiotic free. Chef Mauro will tell you “I love growing for the restaurant, going to farmer’s markets, and picking produce that has never seen refrigeration. Personal responsibility to people, farms, art, history, and Mother Earth is Chef’s mantra. Start your meal with the iron skillet cornbread with lavender honey while you pick your main from the globally inspired selections. One of my favorites: Catch of the Day fish tacos with house-made tortillas and accouterments. Bon appetite!
Take a stroll through the Oxbow and bring home “fresh” for your table! At Hog Island Oyster Company you can sit at their bar or bring home an assortment of fresh oysters harvested from their Tomales Bay farm, plus other seafood. At Hudson’s Greens and Goods shop for organic fruits and vegetables sourced from locally owned family farms. At The Olive Press, select from an assortment of 100% Californiagrown olive oils, in addition to vinegars, seasonings, and spreads. Wander the Oxbow for other fresh delights – to flavor recipes and grace your table.
Eat Fresher, eat healthier, while supporting local farmers and purveyors that bring the best and freshest of foods from farm to table to your fork. Napa and Sonoma counties offer innumerable restaurant choices for your dining pleasure-and how lucky we are to have this area’s abundance of fresh bounty so readily available from farm to sea.
In the Napa Valley and across the hills in Sonoma County, wineries are sending the message that magic waves its wand when a well-made wine meets its match in a creative dish.
By California law, only a few “grandfathered in” wineries in the state are allowed to have full-service restaurants. Wineries can, however, offer food and wine for educational purposes. And what a transcendental education it can be! Some welcome tasters to an educational experience equal to that of an acclaimed restaurant. Others delight with the unexpected, such as Napa’s Priest Ranch Winery convincing tasters that “everything’s better with bacon” by pairing four wines to four thick cuts of rich pork belly.
Napa Valley’s Sequoia Grove Winery, producer of more than six different reserve and single-vineyard Cabernets, encourages guests to forget the “red wine, red meat rule.” Chef Britny Maureze introduces small culinary adjustments to enhance the flavors of the wine as she prepares unexpected dishes for Sequoia’s “A Taste for Cabernet Wine & Food Experience.” Cabernet with salmon? Yes!
St. Francis Winery and Vineyards in the Sonoma Valley was among the first to embrace food and wine pairing and was twice-named “Best Restaurant in America” by Open Table. Today, gather in the estate’s dining room for a five-course, five-wine pairing. A lighter choice is four wines paired with appetizer-sized creations presented in the Vineyard Portico. For both, Chef Janiak finds inspiration in the winery’s two-acre garden.
In the Dry Creek Valley, Ferrari Carrano Vineyards & Winery serves up “La Colazione Italiana,” breakfast Italian style. In fine weather, “Sunday Wine and Brunch” is hosted outdoors; take time to wander the winery’s expansive gardens. Winter hosting moves inside Villa Fiore. Outside or in, such Colazione inspired dishes as Estate Eggs with Hollandaise Sauce and Italian Prosciutto accompany pourings of reserve wines.
Robert Mondavi Winery, now in the new Arch & Tower location in downtown Napa, offers a modern expression on 1960s classics. Enjoy the deliciously paired courses with locally sourced but internationally inspired items perfectly paired with The Estates Collection.
Take in valley and vineyard views from a ridge above St. Helena at a picnic in Merryvale Vineyards’ Profile Estate vineyard. A flight of Profile Collection wines matches the elegant luncheon fare. A guided walk through the vines follows. If a casual picnic is your preference, V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena offers an artisan deli experience. Fixings include house-made salumi, 200 different cheeses, and an array of salads and pastas created to match the winery’s wines. Two acres of picnic grounds await; in inclement weather, tables are set up in the barrel room.
For delicious pizzas, salads, paninis and so much more, visit VJB Cellars in Kenwood. The stunning Tuscan-style villa houses their tasting room, marketplace and deli, and outdoor pizza kitchen as well as a truffle and gelato shop all surrounding a fabulous piazza!
Treat yourself to the decadent delight of caviar and bubbles! At Breathless Sparkling Wines. Indulge in wild-caught American Hackleback Sturgeon caviar, organic locally crafted Cowgirl Creamery crème fraîche and savory gourmet potato chips. Charcuterie boards are also available as well as crêpes on select days.
If it is bubbles that entice you, head for J Vineyard’sBubble Room. Shifting the Lens invites chefs with diverse backgrounds to J for a two-week Bubble Room residency to showcase cuisines and perspectives that are rarely represented in wine country tasting experiences –winner of the Sonoma County Tourism Innovation Award!
Mayo Family Winery Reserve Room in the heart of Sonoma Valley offers seven-course, Reserve Room pairings. Expect adventurous dishes such as rack of lamb chop, tomato and caper “chimichurri” or balsamic-smoked grape “bruschetta”.
When planning a Napa-Sonoma visit, check websites for latest culinary offerings. Book well in advance; experiences are rarely scheduled daily.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from winemakers Chris Phelps’ Ad Vivum is sourced from the famous Sleeping Lady Vineyard in Yountville. While yields were lower in 2019, fruit concentration was high, making for a tiny 350 cases of this incredible wine. This Cabernet is elegant and silky with a vibrant, ripe-fruited quality full of cassis and black cherry dusted with espresso power—this is a lovely wine for transitioning into fall weather. It spent 20 months in 75% new French oak barrels, giving it the extra tannin, spice, and complexity that makes this wine built for aging.
While the Hudson Vineyard in Los Carneros is most known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, B Cellars crafts an elegant, cool-climate Merlot from this reputable plot of grapes. It is made in a Right Bank Bordeaux style and was aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak before making its debut this September. There are only 225 cases of this Merlot produced. Aromas of plum and chocolate fill the nose, while the palate shows off solid structure, medium body, soft texture, and notes of spiced fruit cake. B Cellars makes several notable wines from Hudson Vineyard and this Merlot is well worth seeking.
This Pinot Noir from Imagery Winery carries with it 5% of Petit Verdot, which brings a wonderful splash of color and a subtle floral accent to the redfruited bouquet. It’s full of wild red fruit such as strawberry, boysenberry, and ripe cherry. With a medium-bodied texture balanced by soft acidity, this Pinot Noir is an excellent food companion. The oak is subtle and wellintegrated, and the style stays true to the varietal from start to finish.
Aged in 33% new French oak, this Pinot Noir drinks like a classic Pinot from Russian River Valley. It’s immediately fruity and earthy on the nose with aromas of plum, black tea, and forest floor. On the palate, it shows off juicy acidity, elegance and power, and notes of spiced plum cake, orange peel, and cranberry. It’s robust enough to stand beside an array of cuisine as the season shifts from summer to fall.

Standing atop an aerie overlooking Northern California’s Anderson Valley, Fathers + Daughters Cellars principal, Guy Pacurar, talks about what makes this AVA, and the family’s Ferrington Vineyard, so special.
“When I’d close my eyes and imagine what a wine region would look like, I’d picture rolling hills grazed by sheep, streams running between vineyard and orchards, hawks soaring overhead and a small valley where time seems to stand still. It wasn’t until I ventured off the beaten path and into the mostly undiscovered region of Anderson Valley that I found my idyll.”
It was a similar quest that led father-in-law and vineyard owner, Kurt Schoeneman, to the Anderson Valley in 1996. During his visit, he ran across Ferrington, a vineyard that had fallen into a state of disrepair. However, in doing his research, he found that Williams Selyem was a buyer of fruit from Ferrington. Based on the stature of this client, Schoeneman bought the vineyard and worked it. His commitment to not only grow the best fruit possible, but to sell that fruit only to winemakers who will do it justice, served to resurrect, enhance, and burnish its reputation. Today, Ferrington enjoys an almost mythical status among California vineyards.
In 2012, his granddaughter, Ella, was born to daughter Sarah and her husband, Guy. They approached Schoeneman and asked if they could make a Pinot in Ella’s honor. Given the green light, they sought out Phil Baxter Jr., a winemaker with a reputation for making age-worthy Pinots and just like that, Fathers + Daughters Cellars was born.
Since then, in addition to making their Ferringtondesignate Pinot Noir every year, they have added
Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Sarah’ Rustic Bubbles (a Chardonnay Petillant Naturel) to the mix.
annual production stands at just under 1,000 cases and distribution is primarily limited to Northern California and online sales.
But truly, the best way to experience these wines, and the vision that brought them to market, is to “Taste at The Top”. Book a tasting with Fathers + Daughters and you will find yourself at a rustic picnic table perched on that very aerie overlooking the idyllic Anderson Valley.
“I think to truly understand the impact of terroir on wine, one has to taste the wine on the land where it was born,” said Pacurar. “I promise you, after you’ve tasted at the top, every sip of Fathers + Daughters will immediately transport you back to this idyllic valley.”
Tasting opportunities are extremely limited and are weather-dependent. Email Dad@FandDCellars.com for more information, or to book a tasting.

An Enchanted Evening is directed by Transcendence’s own Executive Director Brad Surosky and marks his Transcendence directorial debut. Tickets for An Enchanted Evening start at $35 and are on sale now. Groups of ten or more save up to 20%.
Conceived by Surosky, along with fellow company members Matt Smart (Hamilton National Tour) and Amanda M. Stuart (The Phantom of the Opera National Tour), An Enchanted Evening celebrates the best of Broadway and beyond with thrilling dance and musical performances underneath the magnificent Wine Country stars and sky.
“This is my favorite show of the year where we get to pay tribute to some of the best of Broadway and beyond, with some of the best talent from across the country,” shared Surosky. “The show will take you on a journey of magic, love, friendship, persisting through obstacles, growth, and celebration. It is truly what this community needs right now.”
Surosky continued, “There are special arrangements and musical surprises that will delight audiences throughout the show. For instance, two incredibly skilled pianists will open Act 2 with a rousing “Dueling Pianos” section that will rock the stage!”
An Enchanted Evening features songs from hit musicals such as Wicked, Into the Woods, South Pacific, and Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, and music from
legendary artists including Elton John, Queen, Frank Sinatra, Garth Brooks, Nina Simone, and Billy Joel.

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect.
Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country.
Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:
• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved.
• Understand that there may be a time limit
• Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs.
• If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person.
• If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly.
• Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)
• Be flexible
• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.
• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period.
• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast.
• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.
• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!
• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?
• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help.
• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle).
• Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).
• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and best not to wear white!
• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.
• Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.
• Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.
• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery
• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.
• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.
• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
• Enjoy yourself!
