Ascend to the top of the hill for breathtaking views and exceptional wine tasting experiences

Three years after the Glass Fire forced its temporary closure, Sterling Vineyards is excited to reopen its doors and welcome visitors back. Over the past three years, the Sterling Vineyards team has dedicated themselves to an extensive renovation project, breathing new life into this iconic Napa Valley estate. The transformation includes the introduction of a new groundbreaking aerial gondola - the only one of its kind at any winery, expanded tasting and tour offerings, as well as a comprehensive commitment to sustainability and fire mitigation.

“The whole team at Sterling is thrilled to reopen our doors and welcome guests back to our newly renovated winery,” explains Luke Magnini, Director of Hospitality at Sterling Vineyards. “We’ve embarked on a journey to revitalize and elevate the Sterling experience while preserving the timeless beauty and tradition that have made us a beloved Napa Valley destination. Guests can expect the same winery they have always known and loved with enhancements to signature Sterling offerings including our beloved aerial gondola.”

As part of the renovation, Sterling Vineyards replaced its beloved aerial gondola. The new gondola, designed and manufactured by Doppelmayr, offers larger, fully ADA accessible cabins and boasts 360-degree views of northern Napa Valley – not seen previously. To take advantage of the breathtaking views, Sterling upgraded the gondola's path of travel, offering guests a slightly longer ascent to take advantage of the unobstructed views of the Palisades and Vaca Mountains. Sterling remains the only winery with an aerial gondola and one of the few triangular shaped gondolas in the world, making it a one-of-a-kind experience.

Cutting-Edge Sustainability Measures

Recognizing sustainability as a core value for the future of Napa, the Sterling Vineyards team intentionally designed the winery with its environmental impact in mind – the winery, including the aerial gondola is 100% powered by renewable energy. Additionally, drought-resistant plants have been placed throughout the property and a new underground water tank was built to enhance sustainability and safety measures.

To prevent future disruptions to the land, Sterling Vineyards has taken extensive measures in the preservation and protection of the property, starting with fire mitigation efforts. This includes clearing burnt native hillsides, assessing all at risk wineries in the Calistoga community, and bringing in sheep to graze the land regularly.

Exciting New Experiences

With new and improved attractions and the core identity of the original winery, Sterling Vineyards welcomes long time visitors and newcomers alike to the property with four new experiences: The Sterling Stroll, Tour and Terrace Tasting, Hilltop Tasting, and The Founders Experience. Guests interested in hosting private or corporate events can also book the St. Dunstan’s Room. Named after the signature bell’s that ring throughout the property, the St. Dunstan room welcomes up to 30 guests for an intimate wine tasting experience. All experiences include a round trip ride on Sterling’s Aerial Gondola.

CELEBRATE SONOMA! 200 YEARS IN THE MAKING

World-famous Sonoma Valley –renowned for incredible wine and before that, apples, pears, cherries and a glorious abundance of other fruit and vegetables. Of course, long before the first crops were planted in the bucolic Valley of the Moon, indigenous people called the area home for more than 12,000 years. Grapes arrived with Spanish missionaries in the early 19th century with the first vines planted by Padre Jose Altimira at Mission San Francisco Solano in the city of Sonoma in 1823. Taking root some two-hundred years ago, those first plants have spawned an industry few could have imagined at the time.

Although the Sonoma Valley didn’t officially gain American Viticultural status (AVA or appellation) until 1981, it now comprises an astonishing 14,000plus acres of vineyards and somewhere in the vicinity of 100 wineries and tasting rooms. The valley’s gorgeous rolling vineyards stretch all the way from the mountainous northern reaches of Kenwood to the flatter, windier Carneros region in the south. Each AVA brings its own unique and special flavor profile to the grapes grown there.

FARMING FAMILIES

The legacy of generations has impacted the world of wine

The Sangiacomo family began farming pears on what is known as their Home Ranch, a property dating back to the mid-1800s. Farming ever since, the family added table and wine grapes, keeping the fruit trees which included the pears as well as apples, peaches, prunes and cherries as the ranch expanded to 400 acres from its original 88. Third generation family partner, Steve Sangiacomo, is aligned with siblings Mike and Mia as the family farm continues to move forward. “Our grandparents settled in this beautiful town in 1927 and we’ve been so fortunate to have farmed in Sonoma Valley for over 95 years,” said Sangiacomo. “We are grateful to have a multi-generational business and are overwhelmed to see how special this community has become. The 200th anniversary of farming in the valley is an important milestone and one we are excited to be a part of and help celebrate. Now we’re looking forward to the next 200 years!”

Hailing from one of the valley’s oldest farming families, Taylor Serres Murnig is the fifth of six generations to live on the sprawling Serres Ranch property. Also celebrating a milestone anniversary, the ranch turns 100 years old in 2024 and, according to Serres Murnig, has been about farming from beginning to end. “Our family is grateful for the land on which we have grown up and have the good fortune to work to this day. Whether we are farming or ranching, our primary focus is on the daily dance with Mother Nature,” said Serres Murnig.Today, Serres Ranch grows sustainably farmed world-class grapes as well as blueberries, which are a highly anticipated treat each summer.

A story about Sonoma Valley’s original farm families would not be complete without including the colorful history of Agoston Haraszathy.

Elected the Sherriff of San Diego in 1850, he built the first jail there, serving for two years before moving north in pursuit of gold and the perfect terrior for fine wines. He found it in Sonoma where he established Buena Vista Winery in 1857. From that point forward, the self-proclaimed “Count of Buena Vista” was a vivacious and eccentric pioneer with a veritable love and unending commitment to California wine. An experimental innovator and vintner, a respected author and shrewd businessman, and a brilliant and incredibly zealous promoter, The Count is considered California’s most acclaimed and flamboyant vinicultural pioneer and evangelist. His legacy continues to this day with the Buena Vista tagline, “Our Future is Our Past.”

Ned Hill’s father, Steve, moved to Sonoma in 1979 and farmed some of the first grapes on the west side of the valley. He worked for his lifelong friend, Ed Durrell, managing the Durrell Ranch for some 30-odd years. As Durrell’s reputation grew, the elder Hill quickly became known as a supplier of quality wine grapes. Following in his father’s footsteps, young Ned started working the vineyards at age 9, driving a tractor by 12 and was soon ensconced in the family business. As the owner of La Prenda Vineyard Management and La Prenda Wines Ned’s philosophy of farming is based in community and he said, “You can’t get through 200 years of farming without a great community behind you.” Calling himself the “CTO” for Chief Tractor Operator, Ned is proud to continue the legacy set by the valley’s families, his among them.

The Sebastiani name is eponymous with Sonoma Valley. When Samuele Sebastiani emigrated from the Tuscany region of Italy in 1895, he set off a chain reaction that reverberates throughout the valley to this day. A stonemason by trade, he saved enough money to purchase land in Sonoma, starting Sebastiani Winery in 1904 and making wine for the Sonoma community and restaurants of San Francisco. His great grandson, Chris Sebastiani is a fourth generation Sonoman who carries on the tradition with pride. “My family could not be more honored to have played a role in helping Sonoma Valley become the world-renowned winemaking region it is, “said Sebastiani. “We

hold our collective past close to our heart and look to the future with optimism and dedication to continue the tradition of excellence we have all created.”

In Sonoma Valley, the legacy of old farming families like these is deeply intertwined with the region's rich agricultural heritage. Five generations of the Kunde family have been responsibly cultivating exceptional wines on for more than 100 years. These families, and others such as Batto and Leveroni, have cultivated the land with a profound sense of tradition and stewardship. For generations, they’ve tended to vineyards and pastures, preserving methods passed down through the ages while adapting to the evolving demands of modern agriculture. They represent a living history of resilience, innovation, and community.

THE FUTURE

Over the past 200 years, farming has brought earthiness, grit, and an incredible community culture to the Sonoma Valley.

Families have been built on a farming ethic of hard work that reaps great rewards in terms of wine, food, culture and more. There are so many reasons to visit the incomparable Sonoma Valley including farms tours, tasting experiences, and classes in sustainability and regenerative farming to name a few. Don’t miss all that this incredible valley has to offer.

SUSTAINABILITY

There cannot be enough said about the importance of sustainable farming for the future of the earth.

Sonoma Valley, and the larger county, are leading the world in sustainability and regenerative farming, using agriculture as part of the climate solution. In the valley, nowhere is this more evident than at Gundlach Bundschu The Bundschu family has farmed the land for 165 years and takes a proactive approach in responding to climate change. Meghan Murphy is the brand’s sustainability manager. “We work with Mother Nature, not against her,” said Murphy. “This led us to achieve our Regenerative Organic Certification in 2023, which encourages us to constantly improve. Whether that be through new sustainable technologies or introducing new soil health measures, sustainability is a path of continual improvement that will keep us on our toes and learning indefinitely. In five to ten years, I see us continuing to implement more animals and technology into our farming program, reducing tillage, and taking a deeper look into the sustainability of our entire supply chain, including grower, procurement, and distribution partners.”

Located in the heart of Sonoma Valley in Glen Ellen, Benziger Family Winery is known as a leader in eco-conscious and organic winegrowing. This 85-acre estate, founded by the Benziger Family over 40 years ago, impresses with rustic beauty, sweeping landscapes and rich biodiversity – the beautiful ranch buzzes with the sounds of wildlife, beneficial insects and farm animals. Today, the entire estate Biodynamically® farmed (the highest level of organic farming), and produces an award-winning portfolio of red, white, and rosé wines.

Three Terroir-Driven Categories

The Lake County terroir here is distinctive. To understand the complexity of the area, Wild Diamond has a saying: “220 at 2,200,” which describes the red volcanic soil (type 220) sitting at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Due to geology, geography, and weather, these conditions create special growing conditions.

There are three separate labels, each distinctive and specific to the varietal: Wild Diamond specifies the three main Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot

Dumb Luck is the Rhône varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Petite Sirah Moon Tears designates other “Old World” varieties, currently focusing on Albariño.

These separate varietals give you an exploratory journey through the unique and varied terroir that Wild Diamond Vineyards is named after.

The current Bordeaux and Rhône wine tasting list comprises 2016 and 2017 vintages — most would refer to this as a library tasting. The wines have been aged long enough to grow up and mature, so they are ready for you to drink now or to age. Also on the tasting list is the Albariño and a not too common Albariño Brisat (orange wine), which is as different in appearance and flavor as an orange is to an apple.

An Experience Like No Other

Embark on a journey to Wild Diamond Vineyards, where the less traveled road leads to a unique wine experience. The drive up to Wild Diamond is a reward in itself, offering a thrilling anticipation of what’s to come. Here, it’s not just about the wine but the place, the terroir, the view, and the people you’re with. And when you add the wine to this equation, it’s a breathtaking, multi-sensory experience.

Small-production, estate-grown wines from unique volcanic terroir

As you sip your wine and settle into one of many comfortable tasting areas, you are surrounded by a 360-degree view of Lake County: The hills, vineyards, valleys, and Lake Berryessa in the distance, and sometimes you can catch the geyser spouting in Calistoga.

If you are a Bordeaux or Rhône lover, go no further. Winemaker Bruce Regalia knows his craft well, and this unique terroir and micro-climates allow for growing several different varieties. Bruce coaxes characteristics from the grapes and lets the earth speak to you through them.

See you there!

Wild Diamond is open for tasting Thursday through Monday (closed Tuesday/Wednesday). Reservations are recommended but walk-ins are also welcomed. Check out the Vineyard Tour, available on Saturdays at 10 am with reservation.

Lake County offers many tastings, each with its unique appeal. However, here you will be “on top of the world” where all your senses will come together to experience “a sense of place.”

The name “Wild Diamond” was not randomly chosen. Lake County terroir is composed of “wild diamonds,” (also referred to as “moon tears”), which is a semiprecious gem-quality quartz that may be clear, lavender, pink or yellow. When you visit Wild Diamond, note the “wild diamonds” on the property.

While driving toward the Skunk Train Depot in Willits on Highway 101, just north of Santa Rosa, there were signs that fall has arrived. Festooned in seasonal décor, the 1915 redwood-built depot structure is a testament to the mighty lumbering industry that once dominated the region. I was welcomed by staff and could almost make out the Conductors call which rang down the platform. Was it really, All Agourd!? Stepping on to these passenger coaches is literally stepping back in time. With the final boarding call and the Conductor’s okay, two short toots on the whistle and we’re off. As the train snakes its way through the Willits yard, one can’t help but imagine how many railcars have moved through here over the past century. Leaving Willits behind the train begins to climb the east face of the Coastal Mountain Range, this steep ascent will have passengers traveling through Tunnel #2 before descending into the redwood thick Noyo River Canyon.

Sit back and enjoy a seasonal snack, and maybe an adult beverage for the grownups, while we journey through the Douglas Fir and Coastal Redwood forest, where the trees hold tight to secrets and stories of Pumpkin Expresses gone-by. Here, it’s the summer and fall fog producing a coastal drizzle that keeps this forest thriving.

Fear not – when you see the birds take flight, it’s the friendly scarecrows doing their job to protect the Skunk-sized pumpkin patch. It’s not every day you emerge to a meadow of bright orange pumpkins waiting for you to make one your own. Sure, you’ve seen a pumpkin patch before – but not one like this!

On the day I rode it was chilly and there was a light drizzle, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I zipped up my jacket and headed straight to get that perfect pumpkin. climbed back aboard got a warm cider and nestled into my seat with my new orange gourd. Be sure to learn its personality – you must carve it an appropriate face after all!

Don’t wait! – Trips and tickets (and pumpkins!) are limited. So, grab your camera and jump on the Pumpkin Express for a fall adventure you will enjoy.

Experience is 2 hours and a pumpkin. Friday through Sunday and Wednesdays in October. Multiple times during the day.

Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.

W/ine tasting in Lake County offers a captivating journey through some of California’s hidden gems in the world of winemaking. Nestled amidst picturesque landscapes, this region boasts a diverse array of vineyards and wineries, each offering its own unique charm and character. Lava domes, cinder cones, and the world’s largest geothermal field define the area and the terroir. The grapes, and therefore the wine, are uniquely influenced by geology. There are over thirty wineries to explore, with wines to savor. Sip distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc in addition to numerous other varietals. The area is so well regarded for grape growing that several prominent names, such as the Jackson Family, Foley Family, Beckstoffer, and Constellation Brands own vineyards in Lake County. From family-owned boutique wineries to larger estates, there's something to suit every palate. The experience goes beyond just tasting wine; it’s an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and hospitality while enjoying breathtaking views of Clear Lake and the surrounding mountains. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, wine tasting in Lake County promises an unforgettable adventure.

When in Kelseyville, you have to eat at Saw Shop Public House! Their motto is “Welcome to our house—everyone is local, and locals are family.” The food here will blow you away. It’s good, fun, tasty and friendly. On The Waterfront Restaurant in Lakeport is a modern eatery with a globally inspired, progressive menu of original dishes meant to be shared. The fresh and ever-changing seasonal menu is designed to tantalize your senses with a fusion of flavors, complemented by wine, to deliver an unforgettable experience. At the Blue Wing Saloon in Upper Lake, the atmosphere exudes a warm, inviting charm that makes it a local favorite. The rustic wooden interiors, adorned with vintage photographs and eclectic memorabilia, create a nostalgic ambiance that perfectly complements the hearty comfort food on the menu. Another local favorite is Red's at the Skyroom in Lakeport. Relax and watch the small planes fly in and out while enjoying traditional comfort food like fish and chips, specialty burgers, fried chicken sandwich or Uncle Gary’s Pot Roast Sandwich. But the twist? Oysters and sushi! Greenview Restaurant is another delicious option, located on the Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course. Let’s eat!

Sonoma County Wineries & Tasting Rooms

Visitors to Wine Country are easily overwhelmed trying to decide which winery destinations to include in their itinerary.

Wine Country This Month is partnering with CANVAS to research and discover, winery experiences that are worth sharing with guests. Last month, our day included DeLoach Vineyards, Cāpo Creek Winery and Dutton Estate Winery.

“Since our lovely CANVAS tour, I can genuinely offer our visitors a plan for Sonoma County when heading west to the ocean,” said Marissa Carlisle, from Yountville Welcome Center & Chamber.

“I would not have been able to sincerely endorse the three delightfully unique wineries had I not visited  and discovered them personally … Cāpo Creek, Dutton Estate and DeLoach … each unique in their own way.”

The Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma, CANVAS, is a dynamic organization comprised of outstanding leaders in the hospitality community. CANVAS Members continually provide guests to Napa and Sonoma with the best possible experiences. We are proud to have such dedicated and loyal individuals participating in the programs facilitated by CANVAS that benefit our Community.

Wine Country This Month is for wine and food enthusiasts eager to explore the vibrant wine regions of Napa, Sonoma and Lake counties. We devote our pages to informing readers of where to go, what’s new and what’s not to be missed. Partnering with CANVAS allows us to share our insights with hotel concierges, tasting room staff and other outstanding leaders in the hospitality industry to help provide guests with the best possible experience.

At our first stop, DeLoach Vineyards, we had the benefit of cool weather so were able to sit outside on their lovely patio as well as enjoy the tour. In addition to the beautiful gardens, “Theater of Nature,” we also saw areas of the property that none of us had seen before, like The Villa and the adorable sheep feasting on cuttings from the neighboring gardens. We learned about their vineyards and, of course thoroughly enjoyed their wonderful wines!  1791 Olivet Road, Santa Rosa, 707-755-3300

Lunch and superb wines were at Cāpo Creek Winery If you have not yet discovered this winery, it is a must! Mary Roy has a beautiful story to tell with lovely authenticity and humor. Her wines are exceptional. We loved the Grenache Noir Rosé. The lunch is a taste and presentation winner! She does it all. She is the winemaker, chef and all round welcoming personality. “The benefit of going to this small winery is access to wines you probably won't find anywhere else,” said Cathy Balach from Poetry Inn. “The host was down-to-earth and open and eager to sharing her story and passion for food and wine. No pretentiousness here. It is located off of West Dry Creek and is a wonderful spot to bicycle to. Oh, and can’t forget the cave, a great bonus! 7171 W Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg

Dutton Estate Winery is “about agricultural history and good wine combined with family and hospitality,” Balach continued. It is always special to visit the wineries that represent generations of family. We enjoyed a variety of tasty wines with a lovely cheese platter that paired very well with the wines. Be sure to try the cider and the new Vermentino. 8757 Green Valley Road, Sebastopol

A special thanks to Chris Ferris of Four54 Tours who drove us in a Mercedes Sprinter. He was a joy to be with, knowledgeable and considerate.
