Creating Breathless Moments
E
ven here in the casual atmosphere of wine country, there’s often a slight formality associated with tasting bubbly wines. The sampling experience is, at times, held in a grand salon with formal seating and a rather structured approach to service. Most of the winemaking terminology used to describe sparkling wine production is primarily done in the French language – all of which can be daunting for newcomers to learn about méthode champenoise, a sparkling wine process which uses a natural secondary fermentation in the bottle to achieve the rounded and delicate bubbles in the wine. At Breathless Sparkling Wines in Healdsburg, your foray into the effervescent is never intimidating or ceremonious. The three founding sisters of Sharon Cohn, Rebecca Faust, Cynthia Faust, and award-winning veteran winemaker Penny Gadd-Coster (dubbed sister number four) created the winery in loving memory of the sisters’ late mother, Martha Jane. She imparted the notion to her girls that every breath we take is a precious gift and ought to be enjoyed to the fullest. And so, Breathless Sparkling Wines was born. Founded on a concept of relaxed elegance, friendly and knowledgeable hosts, ecofriendly stewardship, and creating special moments out of the ordinary, the environment at Breathless Sparkling Wines encourages visitors to share good wine with family and friends and drink in life’s breathless moments – to savor the simple joys. A reminder that even life’s smallest moments can leave you breathless.
SIPPING AL FRESCO
Located one block from Healdsburg Plaza off Moore Lane, the stylish tasting room is where industrial meets glam. Built out of shipping containers, the interior design is reminiscent of the flamboyant Art Deco period of the 1920s. Mixed metals, white marble accents, Parisian blue walls, and glistening chandeliers inside the space set the vibe for a celebratory moment awaiting you. Their outdoor tiered terrace feels secluded and one with nature, allowing you to sip at a leisurely pace under the protection of shade umbrellas and redwood trees whilst overlooking a beautiful drought-resistant garden.

Soar To The Bells at
BY LAURA NESS
“Ring out, Wild Bells!” Is one of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s most beloved poems, often associated with the beginning of a new year, when one rings out the old and rings in the new. By now, you have heard the good news: after three years of renovation and recovery from the Glass Fire of September 2020, Sterling Vineyards has opened with an entirely new gondola system. Reopening most tasting rooms would be a matter of turning a key and setting out tables and chairs, but this isn’t just any tasting room. It’s more like an adult Disneyland, with none of the downsides, and plenty of talented and cheerful staff. Surely, riding on an aerial tram to go wine tasting at a creamy white edifice atop a mountain with an unrivaled view of the Napa Valley, should be on every wine lovers bucket list. There is nothing in the world like Sterling. English businessmen, Peter Newton and Michael Stone, planned it that way. They brought a distinctly Euroview to the nascent Napa Valley in 1964, building what was then and now, the largest stucco edifice in all of wine country. Inspired by visits to the Greek Isle of Mykonos, with its whitewashed hills gleaming in the Mediterranean sun, and punctuated with equally blinding alabaster castles dotting the deep olive tones of the hills, they created Sterling Vineyards. Right from the start, they imagined matchless hospitality that would leave visitors breathless, invigorated and forever altered. And they planted Chardonnay and Merlot, putting them squarely at odds with the mainstream obsession of the day with Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, their first wine, in 1969, was a varietal Merlot. Anyone who visits this spot will forever remember that rush of being swept off the valley floor, above the lily pad covered ponds and olive trees, and suddenly, rising high above all the gorgeous squares of vineyards that suddenly manifest themselves in their entirety, only to arrive at a structure that looks all the world like a giant monastery, complete with bell tower. The giant bells become the focal point as you touch down to earth, and when you learn that they are from St. Dunstan’s Church in England, destroyed in WWII, some of this Disney-meets-Mediterranean vacation begins to make sense. These amazing bronze instruments ring out every 15 minutes, marking not only the passage of your time on this planet, but bringing to mind the hands of those many laborers who created this iconic chronograph. By any measurement, this is no ordinary winery, gondola aside. Each terrace, portal, deck and cellar is wrought large against a landscape that seems grander than anywhere else. Exclusive tasting areas and experiences for club members are abundant. Book a session at the Hilltop Terrace and indulge in a food pairing by the warmly lit fireplace, or outside on the deck. Admire the incredible artwork collected by Newton in the Founders Room, including an original Picasso, among many other sketches and paintings in his collection. Continued next page

Even the gift shop goes above and beyond. Where else can you find lambswool tartan plaid scarves in an assortment of dreamy colors, and a Napa Monopoly board, featuring the Sterling gondola? This is only the third time in its history that Sterling has replaced the iconic gondola system. The current iteration from Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group, an international manufacturer of transportation systems for ski areas, urban transport and amusement parks, has engineered over 15,000 installations in 96 countries. The current cars seat 8 comfortably with great ventilation, versus the previous version’s small cars that held four. To make the point, one of the old cars sits, museum-like, as you exit and make your way to the first tasting stop of the Sterling Stroll. You’ll enjoy a generous pour of the 2020 Pinot Gris from Carneros, as you enter the building’s interior, and begin the self-guided tour. Video screens along with storyboards lay out the history of the property and highlight how each stop contributes to the Sterling experience. We observed the crushpad and production area, quiet this year, while enjoying an unoaked Chardonnay from their vast Carneros vineyard. Overlooking the idle concrete tanks, lined up like toy soldiers from the Nutcracker, we sampled a 2019 Carneros Pinot Noir. The winery will be in full swing for next year’s harvest, under the direction of winemaker Lauren Kopit, who graduated from UC Davis in 2009, and has been with Sterling since 2014. On this early November day, the fall colors were both blazing and sublime, amplified by the low angle of the sun, as we enjoyed a 2017 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the terrace, where you can relax with optional small bites from the kitchen. Visitors during the next few months will be able to witness artist Dusty Kramer painting a giant mural on the long wall opposite the barrel room that depicts the pre-Glass Fire setting. He told us he’s using a lot of green paint: the trees that once surrounded the winery were plenty verdant. A landmark turning 60 years old in 2024, deserves a special commemoration. A friend gifted me a bottle of 1988 Sterling Red Blend, in a Burgundy bottle, clocking in at 13% alcohol. It looked like Pinot Noir. When I handed it to Director of Hospitality, Luke Magnini, he noted with considerable excitement, that it stated: Grown, Produced & Bottled by Sterling Vineyards. “Sterling was the first winery that stated that their product was completely made by them, every step of the way,” Magnini told us. “They grew the grapes, made the wines, and bottled them, all under their control. Their hands were on every part of the process.” Just one more way the founders put their indelible stamp on a winery experience with wines to match. In this digital age, the reminder that the hands of time are touched by all of us, rings out with every peal of the bells.

Harvest 2023 at Priest Ranch
D
A Fabulous Vintage! BY LAURA NESS
ecember marks a quieter time in the cellar at Somerston .Estate at Priest Ranch, the 1682-acre expanse of wildness at the edge of Napa that includes 242 acres of vineyards. Now that the vines have all been relieved of their fruit, the winemaking team, headed up by Director of Viticulture & Winemaking Craig Becker, and Winemaker Cody Hurd, are patiently waiting for malolactic fermentation to finish. Given the extraordinarily cold spring and summer, the season was late upon late. Becker and Hurd, have been stewarding Somerston Estate at Priest Ranch together since 2010, when Becker recruited Hurd from Hall Vineyards, where he’d apprenticed with Steve Leveque. “I told Steve I wanted to study enology at UC Davis and he said, ‘Just ask me lots of questions!’ So I became the most annoying intern ever!’” Priest Ranch vineyard is planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with multiple clones of each variety. Each clone is isolated

to a specific block, the goal is to ferment each block separately. This makes for a complex set of fermentations, to say the least! With the abundance of water from the generous winter of 2022/2023, the vines put forth a healthy crop, even after a later-than-expected start to the growing season. Winemaker Cody Hurd told us, “We’re very fortunate to finally have water! We rely solely on rain to fill up our reservoir, and thankfully, the creeks were still flowing very late into the summer.” This led to huge vine vigor and abundant fruit. Hurd tells us that the first grapes picked were the Musquee clone of Sauvignon Blanc, which came in at the very end of September. Their last pick was November 9, when they brought in their last lot of Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Deerhound block. Hurd says they were eager to get that fruit in before the threat of rain. The 2023 crop looks healthy and exceptional. “We had our biggest year ever, which is good,” says Hurd. “It means everything is right where we want it to be. About three tons per acre overall is really just about perfect.”

The Kitchen at Priest Ranch
The fruits of Becker and Hurd’s previous labors can be enjoyed at the newly opened Kitchen at Priest Ranch in Yountville, where Executive Chef Dan Solomon is dishing out his singular creations daily, with a seasonal flair. Enjoy the pan roasted market fish with autumn squash puree, wild mushrooms, root vegetables, bacon, shaved fennel and olive oil. Suggested pairing here is the 2022 Block 71 Sauvignon Blanc, which walks that tiptoe line between citrus and tropical, nicely weaving in notes of ripe grapefruit with lemongrass, chamomille, green melon and pineapple. This non-polarizing style won’t cause a ruckus, and will be ideal as a welcome wine for holiday celebrations. Another solid “go with anything” wine is the 2018 Brut Rosé, and if you prefer something more robust and red, go with the 2019 Double Barrel, a blend of Malbec and Merlot.

ith one of Wine Country’s most beloved tasting rooms, Frank Family Vineyards is thrilled to be awarded Best Overall Winery, Best Chardonnay, Best Sparkling Wine and Best Winemaker by The Press Democrat’s first annual Best of Napa County awards. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the awards arrive at an exciting time for Frank Family Vineyards, as the winery recently opened The Miller House, a new hospitality space created as a venue for elevated wine and food experiences. Adding to the luster, these accolades come on the heels of the career luminary recognition of Frank Family Founder Rich Frank as a Wine Star at the Wine Spectator New York Wine Experience on October 21. “Since we first opened our doors in 1993, Frank Family Vineyards has been dedicated to providing outstanding guest experiences and crafting exceptional wines,” says Frank. “These awards are a testament to our Winemaker and General Manager Todd Graff’s prowess in creating delicious wines that run the gamut from still to sparkling. Todd has been with us for over twenty harvests and has been integral in defining the signature style of Frank Family wines.” Frank Family has consistently garnered recognition as one of Napa Valley’s premier wineries in both consumer and industry rankings. In addition to Rich Frank’s Wine Star award from Wine Spectator, Frank Family’s new Miller House was featured as “Best Tasting Experiences in the West 2023” by Sunset magazine.

“The continued recognition of Frank Family Vineyards is a credit to the dedicated winemaking and hospitality team we have built over the years. Some of our crew have stood alongside me in the cellar for over two decades, and I am thrilled to share these awards with them,” says Graff. The Press Democrat’s Best of Napa County awards were determined through reader nomination and votes, with the winners were announced on November 5. Frank Family Vineyards has been a part of Napa Valley’s landscape for three decades. Founded by former Disney Studios President Rich Frank, along with his wife, Leslie, an Emmy Award-winning former broadcast news journalist, the winery is dedicated to crafting exceptional wines with balance and memorable guest experiences. Consistently recognized as having one of the best tasting rooms in Napa Valley, Frank Family is considered one of today’s most successful California wineries. The team at Frank Family are proud stewards of 380 acres of sustainably farmed, coveted vineyards spanning five estate properties, including the iconic Winston Hill Vineyard in Rutherford. While best known for its classic renditions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the worldclass portfolio also includes méthode champenoise sparkling wines, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and more.

T
he historic Sonoma Plaza – once a Mexican military outpost, fleeting frontier republic, and Spanish Mission village – is now a gorgeous historic landmark and “slow” culture capitol. Sonoma Plaza radiates romance around every corner, cafe and cobblestone. Whether you’re here for a day trip or extended stay, Sonoma Plaza offers the picture-perfect start (and end) to your adventures. It’s a pedestrian paradise, so ditch the car keys and discover real wine country on foot or bicycle. The Plaza’s old adobe storefronts, meandering alleyways, sunlit courtyards and historic landmarks hum with an eclectic mix of restaurants, hotels, tasting rooms, cafes, artisan boutiques, galleries – even a vintage movie house. As for the nature lover, wildflower hikes and stunning hilltop vistas abound within just a short distance. Anchoring it all is the tranquil Plaza itself, whose vast green stretches of lawn and immense tree canopy create a lush setting for picnics, cultural activities and weekly farmers markets.

hether you’re you a foodie with a passion for truffles, or a food voyager with a curiosity about one of the most exclusive foods in the world, the Napa Truffle Festival has something for you with programs that offer an opportunity to explore and learn firsthand from experts about the gastronomy, science, history, mystery and hunting and harvesting of the highly prized Périgord black truffle (aka black diamonds). For a truffle adventure, on Saturday come for Dig Truffles? — A Foodie’s Guide with Winery Truffle Lunch & Cooking Demo at Bouchaine Vineyards. This day-long journey offers all things truffle, including a cooking demo, fun science, meet the truffle dogs and, of course, lots and lots of extraordinary truffle cuisine paired with wines and presented by world-class experts. Or, come on Sunday for a Winery Truffle Lunch at Donum Estate where you can explore the Estate’s stunning grounds and artworks on a self-paced walking tour. The day includes a rousing truffle dog demo (petting encouraged!). See the highly trained truffle dogs in action as they sniff out truffles. Looking for a divine dining experience? The Truffles & Wine Dinner at La Toque offers the ultimate culinary truffle experience. Composed by Michelin star and master chefs flown in from around the world, this opulent dinner is truffle cuisine at its absolute best! It’s not every day that FOUR Michelin star/master chefs converge in the same kitchen to create a meal. Incomparably earthy and primal, the finest and freshest black truffles take center stage in each exquisite course, expertly prepared by our superstar chefs. The evening begins with a reception featuring Roederer Estate’s classic sparkling wine served with elegant truffle canapes, followed by a superb multi-course truffle menu impeccably paired with some of the world’s finest library and reserve wines, hand-selected by Chef Ken Frank and his team of sommeliers to complement the complex flavors of the black truffle dishes. For a more casual experience, you can catch the free Monday Truffle Festival Marketplace at Oxbow Public Market where you’ll get a chance to sample the extraordinary flavors of the mythic black truffle prepared in every sort of fabulous way — from wild mushroom goat cheese truffle enchiladas, truffled grilled oysters and pizza al tartufo to truffled French fries, chocolate truffles, and cheeky cupcakes with little pink pigs (as in: they hunt truffles). Also, taste wines, see cooking demos, meet the truffle dogs, and shop for specialty foods and products. Plus, buy your own fresh black truffle! napatrufflefestival.com

Sonoma County Harvest Fair 2023 Winning Wines After a two-day professional wine competition with 18 judges tasting almost 1,000 wines, the much-anticipated results are in. While many of the County’s best wines competed in the wine competition, the three that rose to the top received rave reviews from the judges. Winemaker Diane Wilson was credited with creating a deeply layered Zinfandel that boasted notes of red ripe fruit and earthy allspice undertones. Clay Fritz was praised for the tropical ripe fruit notes and perfectly integrated oak for a balanced finish for his winning Chardonnay. The elegant bouquet of delicate white fruit, exceptional minerality and almost creamy finish earned winemaker Andrew Schwendeman the win in the specialty wine category for his Blanc de Blanc submission. Sonoma County Harvest Fair is the largest regional wine competition in the United States. Any made with grapes in Sonoma County, with a Sonoma County designated AVA as the only region listed on the bottle were eligible for entry. A complete list of the Sonoma County wines that won Best in Class, and Gold medals is available at HarvestFair.org.

New Release Wine Recommendations
by Melissa Vogt
‘Tis the season for all things celebratory. This trio of bubbles will brighten every festive occasion this holiday. Frank Family Vineyards 2016 Blanc de Blancs, $60 This a beautiful Blanc de Blancs from Frank Family Vineyards in Napa Valley. It boasts an expansive bouquet of Meyer lemon, crushed nuts, and a hint of minerals. On the palate, it’s wildly effervescent and full of golden apple, Meyer lemon, and honey notes. There’s nice acidity and a kiss of sweetness from the ripe fruit. This Blanc de Blancs spent nearly five years on the lees before disgorgement, giving it wonderful texture and complexity.
Gloria Ferrer 2019 Vista Brut, $48 This Sonoma-based winery has a longstanding history of producing excellent sparkling wines and it shows in the 2019 Vista Brut. This sparkling is comprised of 93% Pinot Noir and 7% Chardonnay and opens with Christmas spice cake aromas like cranberry and dried orange peel. The palate brings ripe notes of red cherry and juicy lemon with vibrant acidity and racy perlage. This 2019 Vista Brut spent three years en tirage and showcases 12 grams of sugar, making it a good choice for those who like a touch of sweetness in their bubbles.
Domaine Carneros 2017 Late Disgorged Brut, $59 The 2017 Late Disgorged Brut from Domaine Carneros is a lovely offering for the holiday season. The late disgorgement classification brings six years aging on the lees, giving it a silky profile with textured layers of complexity and flavor. It’s a nice combination of 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Chardonnay, and shows off aromas of fresh bread and wild strawberries. On the palate, this sparkling wine shines with notes of spiced pears, golden apples, wild strawberry, and crushed nuts. This is a nicely crafted bottle of bubbles fit for the holidays.

Petite Soleil Changes Owners and Retains Its Charm BY JODY PURDOM
“ T his is really my dream come true... We take pride in getting to know our customers whether they are locals or visitors and providing great food in a fun and relaxing environment.” – TRENA MADRIGAL

T
CHEF SONIA CUEVAS FLORES AND OWNER TRENA MADRIGAL
rena Madrigal always dreamed of owning her own restaurant. But when the lifelong Napan and long-time hospitality worker envisioned her own space, she only wanted to be open for breakfast and lunch. Her four children dictate much of her evening’s schedule, thanks to sports and family time so any place open for dinner was off the proverbial table. “What I always wanted was a little place that was open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” said Madrigal. “Luckily, I found the perfect spot with Petite Soleil.” Previously owned and renovated by Napa restauranteur, Terry Letson, Petite Soleil offered everything Madrigal desired including a downtown Napa location. She took ownership on October 2022 and has been going strong ever since even winning Best Breakfast from “The North Bay Bohemian” and Best Breakfast in Napa in the “Press Democrat’s” Best of Napa. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood just off the beaten path, this hidden gem is bursting with positive energy. Mismatched dishes and thrifted coffee mugs with kitchsy sayings are highlights of the space which is open and bright, festooned with colorful paintings and a cheerful vibe. Madrigal insists on as much “from-scratch” as possible with an emphasis on fresh ingredients. Chef Sonia Cuevas Flores is constantly developing new, delicious dishes with nearly everything made in house. While decisions are often difficult, customer favorites include breakfast standbys like huevos rancheros served in a homemade tortilla bowl with both roja and tomatillo salsa as well as scrambles, omelets and Benedicts, or “bennies,” including a keto version served on ham and veggies rather than an English muffin. For lunch, the grilled chicken sandwich on homemade focaccia with pesto aioli is a big hit. Or try the Petite burger which comes topped with all the fixings. Whatever you choose, know that Chef Sonia stayed the course following the ownership change and remains true to the cause – keeping customers satisfied. “This is really my dream come true,” said Madrigal. “I’m excited that locals come by to check out what’s new or different. We take pride in getting to know our customers whether they are locals or visitors and providing great food in a fun and relaxing environment.” Stop by Petite Soleil and discover a fun, neighborly café that might just be your new favorite.

Bocce Courts Many wineries have bocce courts for their visitors’ enjoyment. Becase the game is played between two players or two teams of one, two, or four, it lends itself well to hanging out with friends at the winery as part of your total winery adventure. Be sure to check ahead. Some courts require reservations and/or fees. If you have your own balls, Veterans’ Park in Yountville or Crane Park in St. Helena have bocce courts available when leagues are not in play.

Tickets are available now at bestnightever.org Returning for a second year as Director and coconceiver of Broadway Holiday is Transcendence veteran Colin Campbell McAdoo, who along with fellow co-conceivers Matt Smart and Zachary Kellogg, has created an experience for all ages that explores the vast emotions and memories that the holidays evoke. “We are so excited to present this show that will take the audience on a journey of reflection, comedy, stillness, rock and roll, holiday traditions, and connection,” said McAdoo. “There will be some wonderful acappella moments as well as a couple tunes that Transcendence has never put on stage before. The artists in this show are so talented and we all can’t wait to breathe life into this piece.” The Broadway Holiday cast features several performers from the Transcendence family including Belinda Allyn (Road Trip, 2022 / Disney's Frozen National Tour ), Alloria Frayser (An Enchanted Evening, 2023 / The Lexington Theatre Company’s Chicago), and David L.
