RGV Quilt Guild Show draws over 1,000 entries

By Brittany Asbury The Rio Grande Valley Guild Quilt Show put on a display that filled the South Padre Island Convention Centre to capacity for two days. Over 1,000 quilts of all sizes as well as quilted pieces such as table runners, placemats, shirts, purses, and wall hangings zig-zagged in long rows through the main room, hung on the walls far above the vendors’ booths, and were variously displayed in side rooms. Fabrics, quilting supplies, quilt designs, Singer sewing machines, and Martelli tables and non-slip cutting shapes filled various booths along with even more quilts and quilt samples to view. The Best of Show winner was “A Primitive Garden” by Nathalie Anderson and Bernie Gee. This Wall Hanging quilt also took first place for the Wall Hanging category, and was created both by hand sewing and applique and the use of a track-mounted long arm machine. Leslie Blasing named Entertainer of the Year

Gordy and Debbie Wensel won Duet Musical Group of the Year for the fifth consecutive year at the Valley Star Awards.

By Kathy Olivarez The Valley Star Awards, created and produced by Robert and Billie Ferguson with the assistance of the Winter Texan Times, was once again a terrific show with lots of great entertainment preceding the announcements of entertainers voted by Winter Texans to be their favorites during the winter season. The 2016 show was held Saturday, Feb. 20, at Mission Bell Resort. Leslie Blasing was named Female Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, Unfortunately for Leslie, there was an accident on the bridge coming from South Padre Island that shut down traffic for several hours and she was unable to come. Gordy and Debbie Wensel accepted the awards for her. Bill Chrastil was named Male Vocalist of the Year, Goldwing Express was awarded Family Musical Group of the Year, and the award for non-related Musical Group of the Year went to Razz Ma Tazz, a musical performing group from Nikki Rowe

High School. For the fifth time in a row Gordy & Debbie won Duet Musical Group of the Year. Renaissance Rockers once again captured the award for Rock & Roll Band, while Louis Gomez & Texas Country won Country Western Band of the Year. The award for Novelty or Comedy Act went to Bernie & Red, Gospel Group of the Year to 4 His Glory, and the award for Small Variety Show of the Year went to Walter Plant. The first entertainer to perform was Johnny Ray Gomez, an accordion player from Omaha Nebraska. He put in a lively show with lively polkas and did a segment with a silver glove like Michael Jackson’s and a boxing glove like Rocky’s. He sang songs like “Yakety Yak,” “Let’s Twist Again,” Pretty Woman,” and an entertaining tongue twister called, “Sarah, Sarah.” The next entertainment group was See STAR AWARDS pg. 30

Red Hats celebrate Festival of Tables

Approximately 400 Red Hat Society Ladies from all over the Rio Grande Valley gathered Feb. 9 at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr to enjoy the annual Festival of Tables. This is a special event where Red Hat groups from all over the Rio Grande Valley set a themed table for other Red Hatters to enjoy. Themes varied from table to table. Many had holiday themes such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter, Fourth of July, Valentines Days or St. Patrick’s Day or Mardi Gras. Several had water themes like the beach, a lake resort, lighthouses, Hawaii, or fish. Some had timed themes such as the 1950’s or the Civil War era. Others had themes for celebrations like Mardi Gras and Fiesta. There were a couple of tables set for teas, a formal dinner setting, a Red Hat shoe table, and one for bird houses. A couple of tables welcomed spring, while others had specific themes like angels, chocolate, Coca-Cola® or rummage sales. The tables were all beautifully decorated. Many were quite colorful, while other stuck to traditional colors for the themes they represented. Each table had a different hostess. Some were dressed according to their theme such as a poodle skirt for the 1950’s or a long dress for the Civil War. Others wore traditional Red Hat clothing. The hostesses represented a variety of

states. Ten were from Minnesota, three from Iowa and Texas. Two were from Kansas, Michigan and Missouri, There was one each from New York, California, Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. One was from the province of Ontario in Canada. The others were unknown. When the ladies arrived, they walked around the room and viewed the tables. Then instead of sitting with the ladies they came with, the ladies were sent to different tables so they met ladies from all over the nation and discovered what type activities their Red Hat Societies were doing. Chairwoman Jan Bergman called the luncheon to order and introduced her assistant Margie Pert along with several other volunteers. see RED HATS pg. 30

From pg. 01 al Guard get in free with ID. People who buy a ticket to one of the BorderFest concerts can use their concert ticket to get into BorderFest without buying another ticket. Pre-sale tickets are available at Hidalgo City Hall and State Farm Arena. They are also available at the following locations throughout the Valley. Palinque Grill, Polle Palenque and Taco Palinque. Mayor Cepeda also announced that in spite of lowering the cost of going to BorderFest to $10 for adults, to make it accessible to more people, the organization would be partnering with St. Jude’s Hospital for children with cancer by donating $1 to the hospital for every ticket purchased. Cepeda said the hospital treats children regardless of their parents’ ability to pay and BorderFest is proud to partner with the hospital. Events will kick off on Wednesday, March 3 with the traditional abrazo at 9:45 a.m. A festival will ensue in Reynosa as mariachi and folkloric dancers cross the bridge. There will also be a group of square dancers that will go across to dance in Mexico and earn their international pins.

BULLFIGHTER

From pg. 01 according to Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring. Karla is from a dynasty of matadors. Renk said this will be a one-time opportunity to witness history in the making as Karla will soon be off on a tour of Spain, France and Portugal in the near future. Karla is unique in that she has faced bulls since her early teens. Her daily routine is to train five hours a day, and has the stamina to run ten miles a day in her training. The bulls she will face on Sunday are of the ranch of Don Fred Renk and Don Longinos Mendoza. They were sired by the great toro of Fred Renk “El Conquistador” that is of pure Spanish blood. The press will be here from all over the country to witness this young lady’s performance. Sharing the card with Karla is the great matador from Monterrey, Mexico Guillermo Ibarra. He performed in the second corrida in the Santa Maria on Jan. 24. “He received a slight wound to the right thigh, but was able to continue,” said Renk. The very talented Alexa Michelle Posas is due to entertain by singing some of the great mariachi songs at 3:15 p.m. The bullfight starts at 4 p.m.The gates open at 1 p.m. Reservations can be made in advance by calling Fred Renk at the bullring at 1-956-481-3300. Tickets are on sale at the Winter Texan Times, 1217 N. Conway in Mission. Or they may be purchased at Border Tire, located at Bus. 83 and Mayberry Rd. in Mission, phone 956-585-8473.

Johnny Ray Gomez: accordion player extraordinaire Although he was born into a musical family, when Johnny Ray Gomez began taking accordion lessons at age 9, he hated them. But when he heard a friend play at school he was impressed and asked who his teacher was. His teacher was well known accordionist Johnny Swoboda. He begged your parents to let him take lessons from him and promised to practice one hour a day -- and the rest is history. Gomez has been playing accordion professionally since he was 15. He had a combo called the U-Neeks that included a drummer, guitar-player and Johnny. They played high school dances. At age 21 he was selected as host of Channel 7 Dancestand in Omaha, a show that mirrored American Bandstand. The job taught him how to ad lib and keep the audience involved. He worked Dancestand for three years before moving on. He formed a larger group called the Johnny Ray Gomez Revue with four guys and three girls. They started out playing small town casinos in Nevada before making it to the big time when they played Las Vegas at Stardust and Gold Nugget Casinos for the next few years. At about 36 he returned to Omaha to raised a family, Johnny Ray IV, Tony and

Gina. While his family was growing up he made his home base in Omaha, and for 10 years he was entertainment manager at Bluffs Run Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In 2015 his friend Bill Chrastil called him and told him there was one spot open in the Entertainer’s Showcase. Chrastil encouraged Gomez to come down and audition. He came down to audition and was heavily booked with a total of 57 show to perform this season. He was even nominated for Novelty/Comedy Act of the Year in the 2016 Valley Star Awards – quite an accomplishment for his first season in the RGV. Johnny Ray can be seen Thursday, Feb. 25 at Alamo Paradise Park at 4 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 26. Rio Valley Estates; Sunday, Feb. 28, Magic Valley Park. He can be seen Tuesday, Mar. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at The Grove Park; Wednesday, Mar. 2 at Restful Valley Ranch; Friday, Mar. 4, Breezelake Camp Ground; Saturday, Mar. 5, Seven Oaks Resort; Sunday, Mar. 6, Paradise South; Wednesday, Mar. 9,Winter Haven Resort at 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Mar. 11, Circle TRV Park; Sunday, Mar. 12, Paul’s RV Park; Monday, Mar. 13, Citrus Valley RV Park, 2 p.m.; and Mon-

Link Union plans two RGV engagements

From the Ozark Mountains, Link Union will take guests on a journey… through the centuries, over the mountains and across the sea. Their fusion of vocals, old-time instruments and high energy creates a Folk-Rock experience like no other. Link Union is a synergy of the elements of bands such as Mumford and Sons, Alison Krause, and The Avett Brothers, creating a connection with their audience. Whether it’s ancient tunes or their original songs, they never forget where they came from and stay true to their roots. The Link Family is one of those families that learned to perform in the Rio

Grande Valley before moving to other markets. While they used to spend the entire winter here, they are now in demand in Arizona and Florida as well. But as they travel from one toward the other, they are swinging down to South Texas for two performances this year. They will be at Bentsen Grove in Mission at 7 p.m. on March 2. The other show will be March 3 at Sleepy Valley at 7 p.m. Those are the only two chances to see this dynamic group. Rachel Link, who has transformed from a teenage girl in a vivacious young woman, is bandleader on stage. She

plays mandolin, cello and penny whistle. She sings lead and harmony. She was two-time winner of the FAME Mandolin Player of the Year and in 2012 was FAME Musician of the Year. The very talented Kyle Link is a multi-instrumentalist playing mostly fiddle. He arranges music, writes music and is the main instrumental instructor for the rest of the group. Ashley Link, Kyle’s wife, plays fiddle and is a busy mother of two. Ben, now 19, plays mostly banjo, electric and acoustic guitar. He sings lead and harmony and writes a lot of the music Link Union uses. He was two-time

FAME banjo Player of the Year. Aaron Link is now 16 years old and is lead guitar player for the band but also plays fiddle and bass. He also writes songs. Aaron is the 2012 FAME Rhythm Guitar Player of the Year. John Link, 15, now plays bass, drums, sings lead and acts as stagehand. Mom, Becky Link, sings lead and harmony, plays keyboard and bass. She is a two-time SPBGMA Midwest Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year. Dad, Lance Link, is sound engineer, business manager and incredible bus driver.
