Rina’s Ramblings
This season has been a fun one filled with activities, entertainment, and just a whole lot of fun. We have one more issue after this one and I wanted to spend some time giving some reminders in this issue for our readers and our advertisers. If you did not get one of our Take Home issues from last week, we have plenty left at the office. Last week’s issue is one that we invite you to take back home with you. It is filled with stories about why you should visit the Rio Grande Valley and what the Valley has to offer our visitors. It’s a great introduction for those that don’t know much about the great Magic of the Valley. So, swing by the office and get a handful or more copies if you want to take some home and share with your friends. While March 30 will be our last physical print issue for this season, we do still continue to publish items online. We still get news items that we think are good to share with our readers. We also know we have full-time converted Texans that benefit from that news. So be sure to visit our website often and sign up for our email newsletter so you can be the first to know when a new story has been posted. Also, during the off season, we publish online classifieds. These are at a discounted rate. Rates can be found in this week’s issue and next week, and online. Be sure to take advantage of those rates and still advertise your stuff, even if you are up north. Our summer projects are also starting. During our off-season we also put together the Rio Grande Valley Visitors Guide and the Rio Grande Valley Mobile Home and Park Directory. Advertising for these is available See RAMBLINGS pg. 18
Texas Onion Fest is back The annual Texas Onion fest is back and scheduled for Saturday, March 26, in Downtown Weslaco from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Texas Onion Fest celebrates the development of the world-famous Sweet Texas Onion which was developed in Weslaco at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Originally called the 1015 onion, the name came from the suggested planting date, October 15th. See ONION FEST pg. 16
The people at Long Island Village make the difference
Cheryl Fitzgerald and her husband Scott have been golfing seriously for the past five years. One, or both of them, can be found on the course nearly every day. They, like many residents of the park they live in, not just enjoy golf, but are deeply passionate about it. It’s that passion that has led golfers to name Long Island Village as the Winter Texan Times Overall Favorite RGV Golf Course. (The course also came in second for the Lower See GOLF pg. 12

route. The making of the gnomes by Mary, along with a week spent decorating the cart, paid off with a bag of goodies. Top prizes also went to Jim and Carol McGowan in the walker category for their “paddy wagon,” a
small coaster wagon in which their small Irish Setter was riding. Jim came dressed in an Irish kilt and outfit with his wife in a color matching outfit. The top animal entry went to Kathy Swanson, who was wearing a dinosaur suit, with a play on the idea of “fossil fuel.” Another entry was Joe and LeAnn Hummel with an oversize coaster wagon titled “Annie’s Little Red Wagon,” which included a couple of riders along with a traditional rainbow and pot of gold. Presiding over the annual event were the three parade marshals, all longtime residents at the park. Riding in the golf cart leading the parade, and driven by John Mitts, was Roz Harper. Canadian Devona Slater and Mary Hall rode behind in an attached small cart. The parade had been preceded by a hamburger bash rather than the usual corn beef and cabbage, with Roger Peterson, of the Poker Brats, grilling the burgers. The entire observance was under the auspices of Audry Stewart and her crew. See PARADE pg. 10

ARVP celebrates with 49th Anniversary Extravaganza
Observing its 49th anniversary, Alamo Rec-Veh Park treated its residents to four fun-filled days, just as it has each year since its 45th celebration. This year’s anniversary activities included crowning its king and queen, along with their court, two dances, a parade, several meals, a fishing derby, a Super Bowl party, a bake sale, and an auction.
Park management and its residents have celebrated each four-day anniversary celebration with dances, complete with newly crowned royalty, as well as a parade, several meals, and a wide variety of other entertaining activities. Planning has begun for Alamo Rec-Veh Park’s 50th anniversary next year.
Brownsville Guitar Festival returns live The Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts presents the Brownsville Guitar Festival on March 25 and 26, featuring performances by some of the best, most inventive acoustic guitarists in the world today. From France, Gaëlle Solal brings her vibrant and uniquely popular style to our stage while Xavier Jara (all the way from Minnesota) displays talents that won him the world’s most prestigious solo guitar competition. Created by Dr. Michael Quantz in 2001, the festival was designed to benefit students and music programs
of all levels studying music on the guitar. Ensembles from over 50 cities across the US (California to Florida to Alaska) and Mexico have participated in the festival. Some of the greats in the classical guitar world have performed and taught for us including Grammy™ winners: David Russell, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Jason Vieaux, and Los Romeros. The event will take place at the TSC Performing Arts Center - Brownsville. Go to http://www. brownsvilleguitarfest.com for more information on event schedules.

Quinta Mazatlán presents Fish Ecology with Dr. Taylor
Dive deeper into the fish ecology of South Texas. Fish play an important role in recycling nutrients back into their environment and are essential for the survival and overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Join us March 24th at 6 p.m. for a special presentation focusing on “A century of change to the fish assemblages and flow regime in the Rio Grande/ Rio Bravo with Dr. Chris Taylor! For the Rio Grande Valley our main water source is the Rio Grande River (known as the Rio Bravo in Mexico). The Rio Grande flows for about 1,900 miles starting at the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and is fed by a series of tributaries (river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake): Pecos River in West Texas and the Rio Conchos, Rio Salado, and Rio San Juan in Mexico. The river we know today is not the same that it was hundreds of years ago. Due to changing climates, erosion/deposition, and human impact the Rio
Grande has undergone a significant amount of change. These changes have a major effect on the communities that surround the rivers and on the diversity of species that inhabit the water. In his presentation, Dr. Taylor will discuss the changes in flow regime and how they have affected the diversity and population of fish found the Rio Grande River. Dr. Christopher Taylor is a fish ecologist and ichthyologist who has been researching fish ecology in rivers and streams of Texas and the southeastern U.S. for over 30 years. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma in 1995 where he completed a dissertation titled, Factors affecting the distribution of stream fishes at multiple spatial scales. Dr. Taylor took his first academic position in the Department of Biological Sciences at Mississippi State University where he spent 12 years and moved up the ranks to full Professor. He then moved
to Texas in 2007 and spent five years in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Anxious for something different, Dr. Taylor moved to Washington (state) as the Program Head for the fish physiology laboratory at the Abernathy Fish Technology Center, which is part of the research arm of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. An opportunity arose to return to academia with the founding of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he remains today and continues working on the ecology of fishes in Texas rivers. Learn more at the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán for a special presentation on “A century of change to the fish assemblages and flow regime in the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo”

Camille Playhouse presents Jekyll and Hyde
The Camille Playhouse will present Jekyll and Hyde for two weekends in April. Friday and Saturday shows (April 1, 2, 8, and 9) are at 8 p.m. Sunday Matinee showings (April 3 and 10) are at 2 p.m. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic thriller, Jekyll & Hyde is the gripping tale of a brilliant mind gone horrifically awry, set to a powerful pop-rock score by Frank Wildhorn with book and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. In an attempt to cure his ailing father’s mental illness by separating “good” from “evil” in the human personality, talented physician Dr. Jekyll inadvertently creates an alternate personality of pure
evil, dubbed Mr. Hyde, who wreaks murderous havoc on the city of London. As his fiancée Emma grows increasingly fearful for her betrothed, a prostitute, Lucy, finds herself dangerously involved with both the doctor and his alter ego. Struggling to control Hyde before he takes over for good, Jekyll must race to find a cure for the demon he has created in his own mind. Tickets are $25 for the general seating. Tickets can be purchased online at www.camilleplayhouse.net or at their box office at 1 Dean Porter Park, in Brownsville. For more information, call (956) 542-8900.

Winter Texan Times Advertising Sales Associate Alma Chavez ran into some Red Hatters at the McAllen Heritage Center last week. The ladies were enjoying a tour of the center and stopped for a moment to take a picture in front of the beautiful mural on the side of the building. A Red Hatter from Donna told Alma they were so happy to grab a newspaper while she was delivering. It meant they didn’t have to wait to grab a copy back at their park.

Let’s play golf
Our local golf courses have been attracting a lot of attention. It seems that most every golf course has made some improvement - more holes, water fountains or a re-sodding of the greens. Some of us may not be golfers, but it must be a great game. Golfing
is a fun way to exercise and a fun way to enjoy your friends and the outdoors. Now that we are having beautiful, sunshiny days, it is time to enjoy the wonderful South Texas weather. Golfing seems to be the only game that visually seems to pit yourself against yourself. Yes, there are foursomes that often compete against other foursomes. Winning then becomes a team effort. But each member of the team has his own score actually written down and tabulated in the total. The game

Fortunately, the public courses almost double that number. A poll taken by the National Golf Association showed that the Rio Grande Valley has more playable days of golf than anywhere else in the United States. So, let’s play golf. It’s time to enjoy our great outdoors!

You may feel that you have to be wealthy to play golf. Not true. There are public golf courses in almost every town from South Padre Island up to Rio Grande City. Yes, you will pay a fee to play and an extra fee if you want to rent a golf cart. But don’t you pay a fee to see a movie or to go bowling? True - It will cost you if you want to buy golf clubs and a special pair of golf shoes. Private courses as well as public courses are scattered all over the Rio Grande Valley. Some cities even have more than one golf course. Only members or their guests are allowed to play on the private cours-

bers her first year at the park, getting involved with other activities such as painting and stained-glass. Then she decided to take up golf. “I told one lady the next year I came that I would like to learn to play,” she said. “We would go out with a group of ladies every morning, walking the course and they would help me out. You don’t get better unless you play so I would go out every day practicing. I took it serious and am always trying to better myself.” Fitzgerald says she can see that the course is getting busier all the time, adding that since the COVID-19 scare has lessened, there are more new golfers who probably took up the sport as a way to get exercise and get out of the house. She also said that golf is more than just an activity at Long Island Village, but a way to support others in need. The course recently had a night-golf event that raised thousands of dollars for St. Jude Hospital, she said. “When there’s need, people

come forth here,” she said. “It’s one of those communities that you just want to keep coming back.” The course is an 18-hole par-3 but can play as long as the more traditional golf courses with a merciless wind that seems to always be in your face. Club selection is critical here and you may need to go up or down a club or two based on pin placement, strength of wind – and its direction. UPPER VALLEY Champion Lakes – First Place A few years back, when the Winter Texan numbers were shrinking, City of McAllen Golf Director Carlos Espinosa went in search of, “Why.” His reaching out to golfers has made a huge difference and Espinosa said it was important to see what the golfers wanted and what he and his staff could do to appeal to the Winter visitors. It has worked. Champion Lakes continues to be a favorite among all golfers – even the new ones who took up the sport due to COVID-19. “People don’t often realize the

The Winter Texans are eso important to the economy in the -Valley, and we have made so many egood relationships with many of -them.” p Of course, it helps that the course nis always in amazing condition with da layout that is visually enchanting but both challenging and unique. MID-VALLEY Tierra Santa – First Place The course with the most wellknown finishing hole is undergoing major changes – including flip-flopping its front and back nine, meaning No. 18 will now by No. 9. The good side is that even if you have a bad No. 9, you still have nine more holes to recover – and can make a stop at the clubhouse along the way. The pro shop is being remodeled as well as the restaurant. The course has been in immaculate shape for several years and the layout is fabulous. You could play this course over and over and never get tired of the challenges, or the beauty of several holes. multiple shot selections for almost every hole. Par 3s are easily reached but where they land – even if on the green – can make the difference between a birdie and a bogey, or something else. It’s definitely a risk and reward type of course and clearly a favorite all across the Valley. Stuart Place Country Club – Second Place This golf course continues to make a meteoric rise in popularity. It’s a refreshing and enjoyable course to play (don’t confuse that with easy though). It has the look and feel of a country club from the moment you drive in, but it is public for play – as nice as the course is, it also has one of the premiere golf pros in LPGA Class A pro Wendy Werley Bullock, founder of Mind Body Golf Training and a Master Kids Teacher. Then, when you hit the clubhouse, you’ve discovered the pot at the end of the rainbow. Open arms, smiling faces and a great time awaits you, whether you had a spectacular round, or one you want to forget. It makes the entire experience an A-plus. Village Executive Golf Course – Third Place You get what you see at this Weslaco tucked-away gem. It’s flat, it’s open and it’s a perfect place to play when you decide you just want to go and hit some balls. While this course is perfect for beginners, it’s also ideal for those who want to challenge themselves by going for every pin. It provides golfers with challenges but is also forgiving enough to drop some low scores. The par-3 course is a little more than 1,350 yards from the farthest tees, making it a shot-makers, and apparently a Winter Texan’s, favorite course. LOWER VALLEY River Bend – First Place Ever since River Bend opened itself up to let golfers know they were open, the course has sky-rocketed to a perennial favorite among Winter Texans, and across the Valley. It’s situated along the banks of
the Rio Grande and was once considered one of the best-kept golf secrets in the Valley The Rio Grande Valley is renowned for its climate, flora and fauna, friendly people and economical lifestyle and River Bend worked to bring it together in one location. The name is derived from the huge bend in the Rio Grande that borders the resort and provides the property with a lush tropical setting. Plants and birds not seen elsewhere in the U.S. are common throughout River Bend Resort & Golf Club. Not only one of the most scenic and relaxing courses to play, River Bend gives golfers wide open holes, tight fairways, elevation changes and a chance to use every club in your bag. They have also removed some trees to where a beautiful view of the River emerges and it could make you forget that you’re golfing and not just sight-seeing. South Padre Island Golf Course - Third Place The expectations are high when you play a course named after one of the most exhilarating vacation destinations in the country. This course has been working furiously to meet those expectations. Clearly that work – and some TLC – is paying off as once again SPI is among the Winter Texans’ favorite courses. It’s easy to take in some of the breathtaking views this course has to offer. Those same views can also lull you into too much relaxation on a course that is filled with challenges, and the amazingly crazy South Texas winds, especially on the coast. Whether you come to South Texas on vacation or are a winter visitor – or a full-time resident, you need to play this course at least once. There will be stories to tell, especially after playing the par-4 No. 18. A hole where being conservative is probably the best bet, even though the rewards of a long ball are at their maximum.

Here’s How It Works
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
