February is a crazy month for us here as I am sure it is for you out there too. There are just too many things to do to fit into the week, let alone a day. This past week we were able to attend WinterFest, Don-Wes Flea Market and a performance by Rick McEwen while enjoying some food at Frankie Flavs. This week, in fact today, is our big event the Valley Star Awards. Winter Texans: We need your survey!
The Winter Texan Survey and Park Occupancy Study Report produced by the UTRGV College of Business and Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Winter Texan Times has been tracking Winter Texan trends and economic impact bi-annually for the past 34 years. Your responses to this survey are critical to providing business and community leaders with invaluable data as they make decisions that impact Winter Texan residents for the next two years. Santa Maria holds encore performance
In the 20 years of presenting bloodless bullfights, never has Santa Maria Bullring presented bulls of this size. They are the same size as you would see in any bullring in Mexico or South America. Fred Renk says in all the years from the time he started with the Astrodome in Houston, this next event will be the largest animals he has ever presented. Since the bulls are never hurt, they will go on to perform in the PBR Rodeo chasing their clowns for the rest of their natural life. It takes a matador with great skill to manage bulls of the size Santa Maria is about to present during this encore performance on February 20th. Not for a second can you lose See ENCORE pg. 5

SPI Kite Fest a breeze
By Anastasia Brunson The SPI Kite Fest was quick and easy to spot, with very few clouds in the sky some kites could be clearly seen from the other side of the bridge in Port Isabel. I followed a line of cars weaving across the flats next to the SPI Convention Centre, found a parking space of sorts, and took some time in the car to layer on some gloves, a scarf, and a beanie. The weather was hovering around the high 40s to low 50s, but there was a pretty intense wind as well. This wind I’m sure, though I’m not a kite-flier, was beneficial to the dozens of kites that were maintaining their place in the sky. With camera in hand, I instantly went towards the right side of the
groups doing choreographed routines to songs such as House of the Rising Sun and Cliffs of Dover. After circling around I watched one of
these routines, this one done to an energetic electronic song. I realized the kites that I thought were remote controlled because they zoomed and did sharp maneuvers so rapidly loud buzzing noises could be heard, were actually manually controlled. These kites were smaller and had a more aerodynamic design, and the performers definitely made use of the large amount of space that was marked off for them. After every performance a round of honking crescendoed, so if the wind was a bit too much for you spectating could be easily done from your vehicle. Walking around the performance area, there was another batch of kites including a couple of squids and other Howard and Trudy Maynard from Canada. animals. Here you had to watch your step a bit to flats, my eye on a massive five-tiered make sure you didn’t trip over any of kite along with various whales and the lines and potentially bring down penguins. As I was taking photos, a kite. Being a bit of a klutz, I opted I was vaguely listening to the an- to stay close to a line of cars to connouncer that was on the other side. Dave and Daphne are here to entertain
You may have seen them at your park. You may have seen them at an Entertainers Showcase. Or you might have seen them perform at the Valley Star Awards a few years back. Wherever you saw them, you can never mistake what Dave and Daphne are here to do. This duet is here to entertain. Dave and Daphne are here throughout the month of February entertaining the Winter Texans at several Winter Texan parks throughout the Valley. They even have a couple of shows in March this year. Look at their half page ad in this week’s paper. The duet has won the Valley Star Award for Duet Musical Group of the Year on more than one occasion and are up for nomination again this year. There is no mistaking why they have won the award and continue to be on that favored list of Wintertainers™. In 2018, Dave and Daphne stole the show at the Valley Star Awards with performances of “Hey Good Looking,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and Dave’s fast finger performance of “Flight of the Bumble Bee” that he performs, by himself, on dueling banjos. The duet has also been known to perform songs such as “I Will Always Love You,” “Always on my Mind,” and many other great songs. What brings emotion to the crowd is their powerful rendition of “The Lord’s Prayer” and their tribute to veterans that includes “Where the Eagles Fly” and “God Bless America.”
Dave Slayer has toured the world with Barbara Mandrell, performed for presidents, and has appeared on countless TV shows. Roy Clark proclaimed Dave as one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet. Dave credits his uncles, (Bluegrass legends and Grand Ole Opry members) Jim and Jesse McReynolds and the Virginia Boys, for his love of music and musical ability and talents. When not on tour, he performs with his uncle Jesse at the Grand Ole Opry. His repertoire ranges from “Orange Blosson Special,” to “The Flight of the Bumble Bee,” and from “Wildwood Flower” to “The William Tell Overture.” He is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, and humorist. But most of all, he is just a regular guy with a God-given talent to touch people with his music. Daphne Anderson is a beautiful female vocalist born and raised in Albany, Georgia. She has performed in pageants, talent contests, and churches. She has toured with some of the greatest southern gospel music groups of all time, including The Bill Gaither Group, the Florida Boys, The Hinsons, and many others. During that time, she was voted Female Vocalist of the Year by the Southern Gospel Music Association. Shortly after graduating from Georgia Southwestern University, she moved to Nashville to pursue her music career. Daphne has been described as a cross between Shania Twain and Patsy Cline. She’s quick witted and super talented. Her impressions of country music legends Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and the aforementioned Patsy Cline are phenomenal. The duet says it is a privilege to

your train of thought while performing with a bull of the size you will see. In history, the wounds received by matadors are from making mistakes while facing the size that is set to perform. Renk’s own goring, which occurred in Ciudad Juarez 60 years ago, was his own fault, he says. His son, David Renk, was only four years old when he witnessed the event. “Did you see what I did wrong?” Renk asked his son. He said, yes, I did dad. “Don’t ever make that error son.” And he never did in the 25 years he performed all over the world. David was the sixth American to become a full matador in 150 years, and the only one of these that performed in the largest bullring in the world, Mexico City, in front of 48,000 fans in 1983 at the age of 21. “We have this event prepared to entertain you,” says Renk. Go see the great horse of Mario Ordaz, the singing horseman and his horse ‘El Guapo’ and hear the great voice of Alexa Posas. Fighters performing will be “El Breco” Rodrigo Cepeda from Mexico City and Cayetano Delgado from Monterrey. Gates open at 1 p.m. for food and beverages. Bullfights start at 4 p.m. As always, you can call now to reserve your tickets at (956) 4813300. Santa Maria Bullring is located at 4877 FM 107 in La Gloria.

Chamber celebrates Winter Texans
Each year Winter Texans look forward to the great entertainment that performs at the annual Mission Winter Texan Fiesta. The event is held by the Mission Chamber to say “Thank you” to the Winter Texans that make the Valley their home during the winter season. The event features great entertainment, vendors, and complimentary meals for the first 1,000 attendees. This year’s entertainment is Rick McEwen and Curt James. Whether he is singing, strumming his guitar, cracking jokes, or just telling some stories from his childhood, Rick McEwen is sure to entertain. He is most known for his Kenny Rogers music, but he also
sings other artists like Elvis, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, and even Loretta Lynn. Curt James is a classic country singer with a twist of oldies like Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and the Beach Boys. He is always a hit at dances and shows and even won Valley Star Awards Male Vocalist of the Year in 2020. This year’s event will be held on Thursday, February 24. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Live music will be provided from 12 to 3:30 p.m. It will be held at the Great Mission Chamber of Commerce, 202 W. Tom Landry, in Mission. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs for comfortable seating during the free concert.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES Volunteers are needed for the event. Shifts available are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. If available, email amanda@missioncham-

Palm Gardens donates to charities At their weekly Koffee Klatch on February 3, Palm Gardens Activities Club President, Wray Pedro, invited Victor Rivera from Loaves and Fishes and Gracie Bradwell from Valley Haven Emergency Shelter to accept a check for $645 each. “It was truly a pleasure and honor to receive it. Truly a blessing,” said Rivera of the donation. The residents recently had a pie/cake auction which brought in $1,290 for charity. They decided to split these dollars between these two organizations as both programs are valuable contributors in helping our community.

Styletto Features & Benefits
Alamo Rose Quilt-A-Bees will host its annual quilt show on Thursday, February 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at 938 S. Alamo Road. Admission is $2. The park will display 27 quilts of valor to Alamo Rose Veterans. They will also offer Burden Bears and other things for sale and a secondhand Rose area. Angela will again have quilt supplies and fabric for sale. Burden Bears are an item the group started offering after finding one in a member’s donated belongings after she passed away due to cancer. The group liked the bears so much, they have continued to make them, offer them for sale, and donate them to local law enforcement for when they encounter children in crisis. The bears come with a little note and quilt. The note contains
a poem with the meaning of the bear – to bring comfort to one’s burdens. There will be a drawing at 3 p.m. at the end of the show for the “Texas Star” opportunity quilt. Chances are $1 or six tickets for $5. If you have any questions, contact Marilyn Kimmel at (812) 344-9897.

Leisure World holds quilt show
The Leisure World Quilters sixth biannual quilt show will be held February 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Hall, 400 East 18th St. in Weslaco. The quilter’s raffle quilt is king size measuring 106”x106” in green, rust, and gold colors. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are available from any of the Leisure World quilters or at the show. The drawing will be held at the end of the show, and you don’t need to be present to win. While the quilters traditionally piece the top in the intervening year, this year’s quilt was particularly
challenging due to Covid restrictions on use of and number of quilters that could be in the quilt room. In addition to making the raffle quilt, the quilters make comfort quilts for residents experiencing serious health problems and walker bags, clothing protectors (bibs) and lap quilts for the local veteran’s home. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact meshea5656@gmail.com (608762-5656) or mlsody@gmail.com (620-343-0666).
Brownsville is ready to celebrate Charro Days. The multi-day event will take place from February 19 through February 27. The annual fiesta commemorates the Mexican heritage of the area on both sides of the Rio Grande and is named in honor of the “Charro,” that dashing Mexican gentleman cowboy. The first Charro Days was celebrated in 1938 and features parades, dances, races, a bullfight, rodeo, a concert, a grand ball, and Noche Mexicana. Residents and visitors dressed in the traditional costumes of Mexico and honored the Mexican “Charros.” The Mr. Amigo Association became part of Charro Days in 1969 and honors a Mexican citizen who contributes to friendly bi-national relations. During Charro Days, the association holds dances, Mr. Amigo makes appearances at events,
and they coordinate the Hands Across the Border Ceremony at the Gateway International Bridge. The Sombrero Festival is a three-day street party in Washington Park with Tejano, Conjunto, Country and rock performers. Adult, family and kid events and rides along with a variety of traditional and local foods are also found at the event. The Noche Mexicana Dance will be held Thursday, February 24, at 6 p.m. at the Amigoland Convention Center. The Color Guard Parade begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 26 with the Grand International Parade following at 1 p.m. This year’s illuminated parade will be held on Friday, February 25 at 7 p.m. For more information, visit them on Facebook, or online at www. charrodaysfiesta.com.

I have to admit, it’s hard for me to stray away from the breakfast choices at Denny’s. I’ve been a fan of “Moons Over My Hammy” since I walked into my first Denny’s in the early 1990s in Florence, S.C. I also love the omelets, skillets, and slams However, recently I stopped in determined to grab some lunch and pry myself away from my breakfast comfort zone. This was almost a challenge-the-restaurant meal. I’m usually disappointed with battered fish. It usually ends up battered minnow – all batter and little fish. I’m also all or nothing with fish you get one chance only because I’m either gonna love it or loathe it. However, when I broke my first of three decent-sized pieces in half, I was pleased to see the fish-to-batter ratio was much more pleasing. The batter was tasty and crispy, but not overwhelmingly thick, and the fish was cooked perfectly. I was extremely pleased that it met all my criteria, something that I rarely find. Am I too picky? Nah. My daughter’s reaction to the bourbon bacon burger was simply – it was ‘really good. I could eat it again.’ Trust me, that’s a roaring endorsement. Speaking of her reaction, I could eat that fish again. I was impressed. As I pulled into the Denny’s, one of the first things that caught my eye was a drive-thru lane. I rubbed my eyes and looked again – it was still there. “We realized that drive thrus were very successful and that’s what we had to do. We called corporate for permission and we came up with how to do it. Now they are flying down here to see how we do it and are going to try to get up to 50 of their restaurants across the country to do it.” Denny’s has always been trendsetters in the food business - especially in the breakfast business. Now they continue to do the same, here in the Valley, with business operations. For me that just means more ways to get my “Moons Over My Hammy” cravings taken care of.

isn’t the only event we plan to attend this week, but definitely one of my favorites each year. We are eager for this year’s event to see who all the winners are – to see who our readers have chosen as their favorite Wintertainers™. Since we wait until the last minute to tally the results, we are often as surprised as you are. If you haven’t had the chance to get a ticket, there will be an opportunity to purchase at the door. The event starts at 1 p.m. at Mission Bell in Mission. Lunch is available from 12 to 1 p.m. It’s going to a rocking good time. Events coming up that you might be interested in are Charro Days, Mission Chamber’s Winter Texan Fiesta, the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show, Fiesta Edinburg, and so much entertainment – in the parks and outside of the parks. Be sure to watch our calendars to learn more about these events and others. We will also run stories about events, post on our website,
and sometimes mention them on our Facebook pages. If you don’t already follow us on Facebook, we have the Winter Texan Times, Valley Star Awards, Winter Texans and On the Rio. We use these to share items that aren’t always readily available when we go to press. Our website will also have news items that weren’t able to get into our print edition. Also, we have our weekly newsletter that features stories we have put online during the week. If you haven’t done so already, fill out the Winter Texan Survey that you can find online. February 23rd is the deadline to be entered for a chance to win a cash prize. We hope to see you out and about as we attend events throughout the week. If there is something you think we should know about, please send the information to news@wintertexantimes.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Here’s How It Works
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

short the response to the 2020 survey, resulting in too little participation to produce an accurate report. As a result, community and business leaders have been chomping at the bit for updated information about the health and status of our Winter Texan population. Winter Texan Times publisher Dan Brunson reports “I have been fielding calls for over a year now asking where the new study can be found. I have been explaining that the 2019-2020 season being cut short right in the middle of our survey period in February and March of 2020 resulted in a low response
rate as our Winter Texans were focused on packing and heading back to their northern homes amidst all the uncertainty surrounding Covid in its early months. But, be patient. Now that we are starting to live with this thing and Winter Texan activity and occupancy appears to be returning strong, we’ll have a new survey report out in the Spring of 2022.” If you don’t have a physical copy of the survey, please fill one out online at https://bit.ly/WinterTexanSurvey. If you prefer a physical copy of the survey, please come by the Winter Texan Times office at 1217 N Conway in Mission for a copy.

clude a tour of the museum. The mission of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is to keep the planes from WWII flying. What started with one plane has grown not only into a mission to save the planes from the era, but to also keep them in their natural habitat – in the air. More than 11,000 volunteers work to keep the airplanes flying so generations can “see, hear, feel, and experience the power and majesty of these aircraft in operation.” The CAF goal is to keep these airplanes alive to “tell the story of the greatest generation.” Tours are just one means of rais-
ing money for the CAF. These tours can be special group events or just go on by when they are open. Most of their exhibits portray WWII and the battles fought during the time. About half of their exhibits feature personal stories of people that live, or lived, in the Valley and were part of the War in some way. Tickets can be purchased through Leslie at any of her shows. Pre-sale tickets are $12, or $15 at the door. All seats are first come, first served and are open. Snacks, hot dogs, chips, popcorn, ice and sodas will also be available for purchase. For tickets and information, call (970) 397-4604 or (956) 479-8585.

FEBRUARY 16, 2022 KITE FEST

From pg. 2
tinue taking pictures. Then rounding back to the entrance there was a group of crabs that flew along the ground, leaving arches in the sand as they swayed to and fro. When coming in I had noticed the various out of state license plates and Winter Texan bumper stickers, so after warming up in the car a bit I went back out to see how some were enjoying the fest.
Jeff and Bobbianne from Wisconsin.
WINTER TEXAN TIMES
Jeff and Bobbianne from Wisconsin said they were enjoying the kites, sunshine, and colors. Their experience with flying kites was mostly in crashing them as kids but they still found them nice to look at. All the way from Canada was Howard and Trudy Maynard, they had actually been to SPI Kite Fest two years previously and bought some kites to fly themselves at that time. The beach and people down
here have had them returning as Winter Texans. Before the fest closed a synchronized routine was done by six kite fliers with those same aerodynamic kites. I watched this from my car and even then, it was impressive to see. SPI Kite fest brought out a range of kites in colors and shapes I didn’t know existed and a multitude of people together for a fun, bright day. Even a variety of dogs had a good time with their owners out on the breezy flats.
