11th Annual Valley Star Awards was one to remember
Long-time favorites, soon-to-be favorites and an extremely wide variety of Wintertainers made the 11th annual Valley Star Awards at Mission Bell RV Park one that raised the bar for future events. If you didn’t get the chance to attend and see the entertainment – Johnathan Len, Justin Terry, Mountain Highway, Ron and Jan Easter, Rebecca and Jaime Bagwell, and Curt James – you should make a point to catch them somewhere. In the end, Helen Russell & Company (“I’m, ‘And Company’,” her husband of 39 years, Elvis, said jokingly) were the big winners.

Winter Texan Ambassadors Wanted
If you love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley each winter, you’re invited to become a Winter Texan Ambassador. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities. See AMBASSADORS pg. 33 INDEX

Traffic increasing at all Valley golf courses
For what seems like an eternity, the COVID-19 pandemic has waged war around the world. For golf courses it was especially difficult. One week they were open, one week they were closed and the not-knowing-what’s-happening tomorrow, or later today, wreaked havoc. However, it also gave directors of golf, owners, golf pros and those who make decisions an opportunity to make some tweaks to their courses – minor to major. Golfers definitely have shown appreciation as rounds have steadily increased over the past 10-12 months and are forecasted to continue rising. South Padre Island Golf Club See GOLF pg. 15

Fergusons honored with Heritage Award
As we prepared for our 11th Annual Valley Star Awards show, we found ourselves at a crossroads that we come to from time to time when we decide it is time to honor someone for their special contributions to the Wintertainers and the Winter Texans they come to entertain. Robert and Billie Ferguson were recognized with the Valley Star Awards Heritage Award last week to honor all their contributions to the Winter Texan community. This is only the fourth time Valley Star Awards has recognized someone with this honor, as it isn’t a recognition taken lightly. It was well deserved by these two that have given so much and will be dearly missed as they retire from the Valley scene. The Fergusons have been instrumental pieces in the Winter Texan community for so many years – serving as activity directors in four parks over the past 17 years; serving on the Activity Directors Association board for over 15 years; building, booking, and producing two very successful showcases set up to bring together the Wintertainers™ and Activity Directors; and just simply being there for anyone that needed advice or assistance running their
activity programs. Robert has been known by many names and one of them was Mr. Entertainment. Both Robert and Billie made it their job to know all the entertainers, newcomers, and old timers alike. They always knew who the best talent was and what parks could expect from any given performer or group. They organized 33 showcases – something they did for 17 years – which became the most sought-after event in the Valley for entertainers. They all knew, that was the place they had to be if they wanted an opportunity to showcase their talent for hundreds of activity directors. For many years the Winter Texan Times ran the Winter Texan Favorites Survey. While our writer at the time did her best to pick out Wintertainers™ that were visiting the Valley for each category, it was a struggle. Thankfully, after a number of years two “good people” contacted Jim Brunson, previous owner and publisher of the Winter Texan Times, to collaborate on this special project. These two made the annual survey bigger and better by helping to organize the selection of nominees and run an actual show – ultimately creating the Valley Star Awards. They have been solely responsible for putting on a great show for 11 solid years, even pivoting and creating a Pandemic-safe outdoor show See FERGUSONS pg. 14

Activity Director Appreciation Day is coming
It’s time to show your activity director some love. March 1 each year has been designated as Activity Appreciation Day, but we will celebrate on Wednesday, March 2. The Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association (RGVADA) will host an Appreciation Party for area activity directors at American Legion Hall, 1305 E. Jasmine, in McAllen, beginning at 11 a.m. on March 2. Lunch will be provided at noon along with door prizes and entertainment at 1 p.m. All activity directors are invited, but you need to RSVP at rgvada.org. If you would like to have a ta-
ble at this event, contact Billie and she’ll get you all set up. Remember, your activity director is the heart of your park. While most of us are attending happy hours, swimming or looking for a new
place to eat, they are busy keeping everything on an even keel. They work many, many hours that nobody realizes. Take some time to tell them they are loved and appreciated.

Mission Bell hosts benefit
Mission Bell/Trade Winds RV Resort is holding a benefit for Jean Durbin. Jean and her husband, Bob, were workampers from October until the end of January this season. They worked in Activities and Bob worked in Maintenance in his spare time. He was always available to help people. Bob played guitar a n d was a motorcycle enthusiast. This w a s their first year in the Rio Grande Valley. They went back to Arizona for their physicals and to get their prescriptions renewed. Bob had high blood pressure, so the doctor wanted him to stay in Arizona while they monitored his new meds. While there he tested positive for Covid and was hospitalized. He had several health issues and passed away on Friday, Feb. 11. Jean is still trying to cope with everything. She’s had extra expenses for the trip to Arizona, Bob’s hospitalization, living expenses and more. On Sunday, February 27, there will be a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. followed by an auction of homemade baked goods. After you’re nice and full, there will be a lineup of entertainers and jammers sharing gospel music at 6 p.m. Some of the scheduled entertainers are Dave and Daphne, Jamie Layton, Justin Terry, Pickpocket Gene and Mountain Highway. Everything is donated and 100 percent will go to Jean. Please join us as we raise some money and show some love for one of our own. If you would like to participate, help, or have any questions, call Robert Ferguson at (574) 361-2947.

Happy Days at Pharr South
By Herb Moering “Happy Days” were here again as more than 100 residents enjoyed the Pharr South Park fashion show and luncheon on Friday, Feb. 18. Those attending were reminded of the TV show, “Happy Days,” with the theme decorated hall, poodle skirts, saddle shoes, background music, and photos of Richie Cunningham and family, Potsie, Chachi, Ralphie, Joanie and of course the Fonz. That show, according to Dee Hammond, who offered the welcome and suggested they pretend they were at Arnold’s Diner, spanned 11 seasons from 1974 to 1984 with a total of 255 episodes. The 38th event was chaired by Lynette Smith with assistance from last coordinator in 2020, Pat Yoder. There was no event in 2021 due to covid pandemic concerns. Because of the lingering fallout from the pandemic, this year’s event was limited to park residents, which in the past had drawn up to 300 women. Smith said, “It was disappointing to outsiders,” Smith said, “but felt it was in the best interests of all to limit it.” Hammond said the style show was launched in 1983 by the park’s Bunch for Lunch women. “I’m happy that it is going on this year,” she said. Barb Bierman, a past show co-
ordinator, said, “It’s a fun activity.” As women arrived, they each received a rose from Rena Marketon and an escort to the dining tables by one of the Gentlemen of Pharr South, who also served the burger meal. The guys escorted the style show models to the runway in the middle of the hall, with outfits described by narrator Bierman and Sandy Pena from Lionels Western of Weslaco and Lionels Boutique in Mission. Clothing also was paraded for the Cato store in McAllen. Two fellows from the park, Ted Yoder and Rick Ames, modeled western wear, The other models included Martha Varwig, Sherry Anderley, Lori Teunisson, Mary Garcia, Kathy Ames, Joyce Rachwitz, Evelyn Ringler, Maria Guillen, Jackie Houlihan, Jo Fritz, Joann Askevics and Bierman. During the style show intermission, a little local entertainment livened up the afternoon, which featured Terry Juhl, Jane Heinen, Ted and Pat Yoder and Lynette Smith doing a 50s song in their “automobile,” followed by Mary Lou Hall and Perry Heaton in a 50s skit/dance number. Hammond thanked the audience for spending a “Happy Day with us.”

VSO celebrates with “Dances of the Americas”
The dance hall meets the concert hall as the Valley Symphony Orchestra (VSO) announces the next concert in its 70th anniversary season with “Dances of the Americas,” a musical celebration of dance rhythms from across the U.S. and Latin America. The concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, February 25 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The evening’s program will be led by Maestro Peter Dabrowski, who says the audience should prepare to tap their toes and feel the rhythm. “There is no greater music than music made for dancing,” Dabrowski said. “This concert is carried by passion and rhythm - two things that dancers and musicians have in common.” Special soloist for the evening is Dr. Melissa Vaughan on clarinet. Vaughan holds a DMA in clarinet from Arizona State University and has music degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Baylor University. She has performed in various recitals, orchestras and chamber groups across the United States and Belgium. Vaughan’s performance is made possible through generous sponsorship from Frost Bank. The concert program includes “Serenata,” a Pops classic composed by Leroy Anderson in 1947, “The Carousel Waltz” one of the greatest symphonic waltzes composed by Richard Rodgers and arranged by Don Walker in 1945, and “Chaconne in E minor,” a classic string piece orchestrated by Carlos Chavez and composed by Dietrich Buxtehu-

The 10th Annual Shuffleboard Tournament was held at La Floresta RV Park in Mercedes. While dark clouds threatened rain, the weather cooperated, and the tournament was able to be played without delay. There were 68 participants in the double-elimination event. Winners in the A Bracket were Karen Birtwhistle and Wayne Summerly, both of Manitoba, Canada. Winners in the B Bracket were Sue Froehlich, Floodwood, Minnesota;
and David Martin. Shuffleboard is a very popular activity at La Floresta RV Park. The tournaments were begun about 10 years ago by George Link, from Manitoba, Canada. He explained that they enjoyed curling in Canada and saw similarities with shuffleboard, except that shuffleboard is done on a court, instead of ice. Shuffleboard games are held twice a week under the direction of Bill Hocken of Ontario, Canada.
Harlingen Community Theatre holds reprise performance
Back by popular demand, the Harlingen Community Theatre (HCT) will hold a reprise performance of The Marvelous Wonderettes. The reprise performances will be held for one last weekend, March 4-6. This smash Off-Broadway hit takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where we meet Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy: four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. As we learn about their lives and loves, the girls serenade us with classic ‘50s hits including “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” “Stupid Cupid,” and “Lipstick on Your Collar.” In Act II, the Wonderettes reunite to take the stage and perform at their ten-year reunion. We learn about the highs and lows the
girls have experienced in the past decade and are charmed to find that no matter what life throws their way, they will conquer it together. Featuring over 30 classic ’50s and ’60s hits, The Marvelous Wonderettes will keep you smiling in this must-take musical trip down memory lane. The performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a matinee performance on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 with an additional $2 transaction fee for debit/credit card transactions. Reservations are also accepted online at www.harlingencommunitytheatre.org. Call (956) 412-7529 for more information or visit their website.

for us last year. We have thoroughly enjoyed partnering with these two from the inception of the Valley Star Awards Show. We have learned a lot from these two and we can only hope that we can measure up and continue to maintain the very high standards of professionalism, fairness, and quality. “They definitely had the interests of the Activity Directors as their priority,” said Peter Loring at Seven Oaks, of their commitment to the activity directors and the association. They are an amazing team, contributed Maude from Casa del Valle. They share, they care, and are so organized – all reasons they have made such a huge impact on those they have served. They make one feel important no matter whether you’re an entertainer or a volunteer. Being part of their team has been one of the most wonderful and memorable experiences for so many. Sue Dodd said of Robert and Billie, they were good teachers and “with their guidance everything always seemed to just fall into place like clockwork. [They] will be leaving a legacy from which we can all profit and learn.” “They are the epitome of integrity and fairness, which was very much in line with the way I always tried to operate my business. That’s just who they are – “good people.” Robert is a true leader, and Billie is the one who would flawlessly take care of all the behind-the-scenes details to make sure everything worked as planned,” said Jim Brunson. Linda Miller, who served with them for several years, said they

were always good to bounce ideas off of. Their job was a year-round job because they were always sharing about the Valley even while they were home in Tennessee or traveling to events. They always gave their very best wherever they worked, whatever project was set before them. “They are two of my favorite people,” said Miller. “Couldn’t have been better friends to everybody, and especially me. I love them dearly.” For us, current owners of the Winter Texan Times, we know we have a lot to live up to taking over the Valley Star Aw a r d s . We hope we can continue their legacy and put on a great show year after year. They are going to be a tough act to follow, but they were great examples and have provided us with lessons we won’t forget. Jim shared some words that we can all relate to, “Happy trails, Robert and Billie, until we meet again. We are surely going to miss you. I am proud to call you my good friends. “Congratulations on the Heritage Award, an award you certainly deserve. You have created a wonderful heritage for us to reflect upon and for others to build upon. You have raised the bar for all those who follow. God bless you in this next chapter of life.” Everyone here at the Winter Texan Times and the Valley Star Awards would like to echo what so many have already expressed to Robert and Billie. We love you and thank you! Know that you will be missed!

Baseball needs the New York Yankees to be good – they are the most popular team in the sport (meaning loved and hated). Same goes for the Dallas Cowboys. As these teams win, people become more passionate about them – one way or another. South Padre Island Golf Club is similar. It needs to be the diamond of South Texas Golf. Just the name exudes excellence so anything less on the course is unacceptable and they are working to make it more than just acceptable. It’s making its way back to the top tier and most prestigious courses around. That bodes well for golf in general. Major renovations have re-elevated this golf course to one of the premiere courses in South Texas. Completely torn apart and rebuilt greens (all 18), a new irrigation system and the addition of “lots of grass” are key upgrades that add to the entire golf experience. South Padre Island Golf Club has some of the most scenic holes in all of

The course has consistently worked on improving its cart paths, sand traps, natural beauty, and other areas in recent years. If you haven’t played here recently, it’s worth checking out again. International provides the beginning golfer as many challenges as the more experienced golfer. Perfectly self-described as a golf sanctuary, the peaceful surroundings combined with a difficult but beatable and rewarding layout, the four sets of tees are key in how you play your round and give even the lowest handicappers some big decisions to make – lay up or grip it and rip it?

With the unpredictable wind – in both strength and direction – you may have to choose between three or four clubs. This is not a putt-putt course. In fact, some of the holes may be the toughest in South Texas. Of course, some holes are forgiving too but you’ll never get bored of playing this beautifully designed and fun course. They not only were named the “Best Small Band Variety Act” but also “Entertainers of the Year,” by Winter Texan voters across the Rio Grande Valley. From Osage Beach, Missouri, the duo has had a long-time award-winning show, bringing live music, “scalding piano, hot licks on the banjo, jumpin’ bass guitar and drums.” They perform country, bluegrass, rockabilly, classic rock from the 50s to the 80s and more. Their variety doesn’t stop there, including audience participation, comedy, and impersonations of entertainers such as Dolly Parton, Cher, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more. “I can’t give this lady enough credit,” Elvis said. “She’s just amazing.” This is the second time the duo, married for 43 years, and who began entertaining in the 80s, have won “Entertainers of the Year”, and fourth time named “Best Small Band Variety Act”. “First of all, we concentrate on being entertainers. We aren’t the finest or most polished musicians, but entertainment is our No. 1 thing,” Russell said. “We try to connect with the people and change our show to have new content every year. If they come back time after time, they don’t want to hear the same thing, so we work hard to come up with new material and feel it’s worth it. “We just enjoy the people and what we do. If it

gets to the point you don’t enjoy it or dread it, don’t do it. We still love what we do.” For the second time in the past three events, Rusty Rierson was named Male Vocalist of the Year. Rierson’s vocals, personality and comedy within the show made him an immediate hit when he first arrived. Obviously, he still is. “The really meaningful thing about the Valley Star Awards is that it’s a people’s choice award,” he said. “There are no judges with natural biases and prejudices. It’s left up to the fans to choose. That means my fans really appreciate what I do. And that is a very fulfilling thing for me.” “I am humbled to win this award again in 2022.” Robert and Billie Ferguson, names synonymous with Winter Texans and Wintertainers alike, received the prestigious Heritage Award, given out only three times prior. The award is given in appreciation for the outstanding contribution to Winter Texas entertainment and the Fergusons have given their all, moving to the Valley 17 years ago, starting

the Winter Texan Showcase in 2006, growing it to two showcases (from 15 to 66 entertainers) and, as Robert said, “we have met every entertainer to come to the RGV in the past 15 years.” This is their final year in the Valley, heading back to Tennessee in April. There, Robert will teach and call square dancing, something he did before he moved to the Valley and while here. Billie said she will more than likely be the treasurer for the Tennessee State Square Dancing Convention. They aren’t slowing down, just transitioning. They have been tour directors, activity directors and an integral part of entertainment in the Valley
throughout their time. “It was wonderful and really special to receive that,” Billie said. “We didn’t expect it and it was such a nice gesture they did. It made us feel
really good.” The other three Heritage Award winners are entertainer Sherwin Linton, former Winter Texan Times writer Kathy Olivarez and former Winter Texan Times publisher Jim

Casa Del Sol’s Rec Hall is full of life
Casa Del Sol RV and Mobile Home Park’s recreation hall, in Donna, sits large within its park – really large. It’s a looming presence that says, “Look at me.” You’ll be happy you did. The massive building is only referred to as the rec hall, but make no mistake, it’s a Great Rec Hall. It’s presence on the outside is impressive. It’s value on the inside is even greater and it’s the lifeblood for just about everything for park residents.
On this day it’s decorated for a (Wednesday) luau. “This is where everything happens, from business to entertainment, from playing cards to billiards to using the hot tub or entering the pool,” said Joe Compton who, along with his wife Kathy, have been the park managers for the past five years. “People will come and watch sports games on the big screen TV, share meals, have church and relax or play here.” Joe even streams his high school football team from back in Missouri on Friday nights. It’s been growing in popularity too. The first thing that catches a walk-in’s attention is the decorations, on this day Hawaii-themed all throughout the great hall. The
park is having a luau today (Feb. 23), so the theme is set. Bright colors, a variety of leis, figures, Tiki masks and all things Hawaiian were arranged throughout the hall, extending to its other rooms as well. “Deb Burkett is our park director of design, and she comes up and shops for all of this,” K a t h y said. “Deb is the mastermind, but with lots of help. Deb and Dan (her husband) have really done a big job on beautifi-
cation here and we’re also working on a memorial garden where rose bushes and trees have been bought.” The worker bees at Casa Del Sol keep up with the decorations, changing them regularly and not missing a beat when holidays of significance approach throughout the year. It continually gives the hall a relevant appeal, and probably strikes up some curiosity at times also. “This is the epicenter of Casa del Sol, grand central if you will for amusement and socialization,” Joe said. “All our business is conducted here and the activity directors work here. It’s really a fun place.” It’s more like a mini amusement park for residents. One step into the building and it’s, “OK, what do we want to do first.” The different “stations” around the building include a coffee circle with a television, the hot tub, the inside entrance to the pool, a gym, the

Winter Texans bring their talents to the Valley
The votes are in! The Valley Star Awards have been voted on by you. How blessed we all are to have the Wintertainers visit the Rio Grande Valley as they provide us with some of the best entertainment available....dance to their music, listen to their vocalists and acquaint yourself with some of the top entertainers from Nashville, Memphis and Branson. The Rio Grande Valley also receives internationally known entertainers. A very talented group travels from San Luis Potosi, Mexico to perform at the Festival of Lights in the town of Hi-
dalgo. This group has been invited to entertain worldwide. It is amazing that so many of our local citizens are not aware of how much talent is available for our entertainment. Recently, Port Isabel celebrated Market Days and many locals entered in various competitions, one event being the selection of the best vocalist. It was a surprise to learn that a lady I had known for several years made the cut to enter this competition. Even suffering from dehydration that caused her to pass out the day before, Karen Timko from Winter Ranch RV Park in Al-

Who knows how many more Winter Texans have talents we don’t even know about? Many of our Winter visitors quietly share those talents. A talent can also be a skill - maybe it is the ability to teach or quilt or work as a carpenter or electrician. It is of great benefit to the Rio Grande Valley to have so many Winter Texans who share their talents with us. Their expertise in quilting, teaching, carpentry and so many other talents is not

Here’s How It Works
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

From pg. 1
You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing for country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas. The Winter Texan Times will be
publishing our annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 16 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take 25 to 50 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. Give us a call at (956) 580-7800 before close of business on March 12 and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need on March 16. If you are leaving before March 16, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home.
