Festival of Tables was better than ever!
By Kathy Olivarez Red Hat ladies from all over the Rio Grande Valley gathered for the first time in two years at Alamo Country Club on February 25 to view the elegant tables set by chapters from all over the Valley and to meet and greet old friends. A total of 25 tables with different themes were set for the ladies to enjoy. For an hour before lunch was served ladies browsed the tables to see which ones were their favorites. One of the favorite tables were presented by Maureen Keppy and Dennis Ziaja. Though the theme was “Oriental,” Japan was empha-
WOW! It has been crazy the last two weeks. I have enjoyed the busy-ness – getting out there and doing. Last week I was able to attend Alamo Rose’s presentation of quilts to their resident veterans. This was such a beautiful ceremony with a presentation of colors and the military flags. It even included some history about the Star-Spangled Banner. And of course, there was a See RAMBLINGS pg. 18
Winter Texan Ambassadors Wanted
If you love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley each winter, you’re invited to become a Winter Texan Ambassador. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. The past couple of years have been difficult for many businesses. While not knowing if they were going to be opened or closed, it gave directors of golf, owners, golf pros and those who make decisions an opportunity to make some tweaks to their courses – minor to major. Over the next few weeks, we would like you to try out a new course, or two or three, and then let us know about your favorites in our golf course survey. We would also like to solicit additional feedback for our wrap up story. And if you would, attach a short note to your ballot, telling us why you voted the way you did. Veterans honored at Alamo Rose
It was a beautiful day last week when several Veteran residents at Alamo Rose were honored with patriotic themed quilts made by the park’s quilters. Two years ago, the summer quilters wanted to do something special for the park’s own resident Ve t e r a n s . Last year they recognized a number of World War II Veterans. This year they recognized 28 Veterans in the park. Diana Gatewood said, “These ladies and gentlemen have come from all walks of life. Some were very young when they got the calling, some a little older. Many had nothing in common with one another until they put on the uniform and raised their right hand. “We are here today to thank them and salute their bravery,” she added. Each quilt was handmade by members and friends of the Alamo Rose Summer Quilters under the direction of Rachel Patch. Doris Anderson took on the arduous task of quilting them and another group of ladies assembled the quilts. The quilts were all made with red, white, and blue colors. Some featured artwork in the center, while others had intricate designs. “It was difficult to decide who received which quilt,” she said. “So, they were wrapped. They are all lovely.” Before the event was in full swing, a brief history lesson was shared about the Star-Spangled Banner. Prior to the presentations and the potluck dinner, the US flag and flags of military branches were presented
by members of those branches. Flag presenters were Jim Neighbors, Richard Velich, Ray DeCatur, Paul Blough, Frank Hostler, and Gordon Swanson. Pastor John Gale said a blessing on the food. Diana went on to recognize veterans in attendance, even if they weren’t getting a quilt that day, by calling out each branch and asking them to stand. She also recognized firefighters, first responders, law enforcement, and others – American and Canadian. “These are all heroes,” said Diana. “They all deserve a huge round of applause. Thank you all for your service.” Diana and Jack Gatewood, Barbara Brown, and Rachel then went on calling recipients, one-by-one, sharing a brief bio detailing their time in the military. These individuals served anywhere from four to sixteen years. Those receiving quilts were: Frank Hostler, Air Force; Paul Blough, Navy; John Gale, Navy; Roger C. Heilig, Air Force; Steve Jackson, Navy; Philip Altheide, Air Force; Raymond DeCatur, Marine Corps; Jerry D. Broadfield, Air Force; Ken Kay, Navy Reserves; Kenneth Pingel, Air Force; Gary Dennis Pittman, Air Force; Bob Culbertson, Navy; Rachel Patch, Army; Allen R. Trafford, Army and Army National Guard; Larry Booth, Army National Guard; David Jones, Navy; Kevin Coan, Air See VETERANS pg. 7

This brings La Floresta to a total of about $52,000 raised by the La Floresta family during the past 26 years. We pray our donation will help speed up a cure. Their show will be held on Wednesday, March 9, from 4 to 6 p.m. This traditional Bluegrass Band is filled with Rio Grande Valley Winter Texans. It is a great bunch of very talented musicians sharing wonder-
ful vocal harmonies and some of the best instrumentals you’ll hear in the Valley. This culmination of talented Bluegrass musicians is purely a blend of what is considered to be an extremely entertaining art form, says band leader Wayne Uncer. sized by Keppy, who was wearing a brightly colored kimono. “I have had a Japanese pen pal for 66 years,” she explained. “I finally had an opportunity to go to Japan and meet her.” The centerpiece of their table was a traditional Japanese doll in a glass case, wearing a kimono. Other items included fans with oriental designs, bento (lunch) boxes, and other colorful objects. Keppy spent her time telling those who stopped by her table about the things she gathered in Japan on her trip. A second favorite table was entitled “The Fabulous Fifties” created by Judy Reynolds and Kay Beall who dressed in “poodle skirts” reminiscent of the 50’s. The ladies used a red tablecloth covered with things from the 50’s like a “Howdy Doody” doll, antique car models and children’s old 78 rpm records were used as chargers for the dinner plates. The napkins carried the 50’s theme and featured popular entertainers and events of the era. “If we were voting, this table would be my favorite,” exclaimed one Red Hatter as she admired the elegant “New Year’s Eve” table prepared by Jan Bergman and Donna Reit. The table featured tall crystalware with tiny white lights inside the bowls and white rose balls on top. Black place mats with gray and white china from Jan’s hope chest and silver “crackers” over a white lace tablecloth completed the look. Christmas is always a favorite theme and Barbara Gerlach and Ethel Gonzalez were ready with red plaid chair toppers featuring a snow-
man on the back that matched the lighted table runner on their table. Several decorated cone Christmas trees were placed along the runner. “Chocolate” is always popular, and the table designed by Terry Dutremaine and Jean Henry was covered with several types of chocolate candy and cupcakes for the lucky ladies at their table to take home. For those looking for a healthy treat, a table named “Apples” offered bright juicy apples to those who sat there. Connie Gerrels and Linda Shaaf created the table. And for those who love going to the movies and eating popcorn, “At the Movies,” created by Sandy Eddington and Pati Jo Miller, featured a popcorn theme. “Safari’ was the theme of a table covered with leopard cloth and black placemats and napkins. Animal safari bags filled with goodies added to the theme created by Apolyn Crist and Iris Lewis. “Red Hat Tea Party” by Maggie Loney and Carol Shilling featured lovely china teapots with floral decorations on them that were filled with rose bouquets. Another “Red Hat Tea Party” was decorated with a variety of red hats. It was created by Matilde Buni and Eleonore Smith. Other themes included “St. Patrick’s Day” with lucky charms and the traditional green theme, designed by Char Tiegen and Miriam Cartwright. A “Valentine’s Day” table covered with bright red hearts, was designed by Alicia Requenez and Alicia Lozano. “Quilting” was the theme of a table by Sherry Petrie and Sue See RED HAT pg. 18

thoughts, your stories, and any duffers anecdotes you would like to share. Tony Butler Golf Course Tony Butler will be a new Tony Butler in just a few months. The city of Harlingen will be closing down the golf course from April until possibly October for super-duper, major renovations. Among those improvements include redoing tee boxes, greens, and irrigation. In other words, when the course re-opens it will be like the unveiling of a new course. This is a major project that will benefit the community, the golf course and, of course, golfers. Tony Butler has already gone from having a little bit of everything to a little bit more of everything as the club reopened its executive golf course and now has 27 holes to await the golfer who checks in to possibly the most historic course in South Texas. From wide open fairways where you can swing away to some tight shots within a magnificent set-
ting, this municipal is sure to challenge the golfer in many ways. Butler, a PGA champion from Ganado, Texas brought some of the greatest golfers to the Valley for tournaments during the Great Depression. He was known for his use of the 4-wood, which he would sometimes play entire rounds using only that club. We don’t recommend you try that but if you’re in the mood for a super challenge. renovation of the clubhouse will begin, including a separate room for golfers to just relax. There’s even more. No. 18 – probably the most well-known hole, and surely the most popular finishing hole in the Valley – will no longer be No. 18. The course is flipping its starting hole to where No. 10 was, meaning 18 will now be No. 9. Good thing the new bar/ grill is right there. Golfers can celebrate or commiserate No. 9 before they head to the new back nine. It’s going to be harder to believe that this is a public course and not a country club, because it is a public course with the ultimate country club feel. And no matter if it’s No. Tierra Santa 9 or No. 18 or any hole in between, you will leave that hole either with a big grin on should be exciting enough to bring your face or scratching your head golfers in by the busload. wondering... how? Scenic views, magnificent trees and serene lakes make this course beautiful. And the layout makes it challenging and always a fun course to play. Many holes are wide open, some bottle neck so you play risk versus reward here if you don’t plan a couple shots ahead. Slight elevation changes may also throw the golfer off, or at least for the golfers to think more about which club to pull out of the bag. Address: 3009 N. Heidenscheidt. Pin cushions and other sewing notions decorated the table. “Denim Dazzler” by Jane Simms and Karen Gerlach featured all shades of blue. “Aloha,” featuring pink flamingoes in various forms, was designed by Jana Fleming and Vicki Okeson. More outdoor themes included “On the Beach” with a marine decorated tablecloth and a display of beach flip-flops by Pat Carey and Anne Westgate. Another outdoor table by Jo Anne Procek and Karen Goer, featured a display of “Lighthouses.” “Camping” was the theme used by
Norma Forrest and Mary Goodwin, who displayed miniature campers on a red and white picnic cloth. “Wildflowers” was the theme used by Sandy Funk, while Mary Virginia Gerlach and Kathy Brown also used wildflowers in their “Springtime Magic” theme. Following the browsing the ladies enjoyed a chicken luncheon catered by Balli’s of Mission. Jan Bergman, Exalted Queen Mother of The Rio Grande Valley, led a short meeting before introducing the entertainment. Pianist Jason Whorlow and his two daughters, Brianna and Amelia, entertained. Jason played the music of Elton John, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash and others. He also played and sang a special song he created for the Red Hat Ladies. His two daughters each sang two solos, sometimes walking the floor as they sang.

potluck dinner involved. From there I went to a jam at Casa Del Valle. It was a beautiful tribute to a man that brought music to several parks and made jams better for many involved. I also had the chance to attend the Red Hatters Festival of Tables. It was so much fun to visit with this wonderful group of ladies. I saw people I haven’t seen in years and some I have known for over 30 years – oops, kind of showing my age there (and theirs!). I might just become a Red Hatter
so I can hang out with these ladies more often. We attended a gospel music fundraiser event on Sunday at Mission Bell. This filled our souls and made us realize how blessed we are with the community we serve. The Wintertainers™ included some local jammers, the Whosoever’s, Dave and Daphne, Rusty Rierson, Mountain Highway, Jamie Layton, and Justin Terry. They shared their testimonies and talents with beautiful music of worship.

They have been raising money for St. Jude for over seven years right here in the Rio Grande Valley. All performance proceeds go to St. Jude. Over the last five to six years, the band has raised nearly $45,000
for St. Jude. Over the years they have performed at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and BBQ, Brownsville Historical Society, Edinburg Museum Heritage Days, Jackson St. Market Days in Harlingen, the Pharr International Food Festival, SPI Convention Center and over 30 RV parks throughout the Valley.

Here’s How It Works
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
