Rina’s Ramblings

This season has been a blast! Despite a knee injury at the beginning of the season, I was able to get out there a bit and enjoy some time with you. It took me a while, and I know we missed a lot at the beginning of the season, but we still had some fun once the season really started picking up in January. It was a pleasure to get out to attend events where parks were giving to their communities or had made special items for the veterans in their parks. It was also heartwarming to see events held in memory of those lost, or to help support a family who lost a loved one. Your love for those you surround yourself with is a wonderful thing and makes me feel blessed to be but a small part of it – whether I was able to attend or just include some of what you do in the Winter Texan Times. We have truly enjoyed getting to know you this year. We have been able to connect with you this year more than we have in previous years. Yes, things were a little slow last year, but you sure made up for it this year. We have enjoyed meeting activity directors, Wintertainers™, volunteers, and all of those in between. My husband and I have always had a fondness of the Winter Texan community. He saw this paper from its very first issue in 1987 and now strives to continue what his grandmother and dad built. I grew up surrounded by two Winter Texan parks. Our family befriended several of the residents each year. I remember one couple from Washington that brought us apples every year. They eventually had to stop visiting, but their children visited one year, just See RAMBLINGS pg. 19

Thank you for all that you do This season is ending, and I hate to see it go. We always enjoy your time with us, and our time with you, and we sure are going to miss it while you are gone. After a couple of years with a slow down of activities and not much to attend, we were so thankful to get out this year. We wish we could have attended more events, because there was just so much to do. We were so happy to see parks reopening and letting people in this season. It was nice to see things as they should be at most places. After See THANK YOU pg. 14

Winter Texans enjoy 46th Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso By Herb Moering Tourist Day in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico was a “breeze” for Winter Texans attending the all-day appreciation of visitors’ celebration on March 21. Despite the strong gusts of wind, Winter Texans enjoyed the entertainment, the trinkets, and the food, which included free tamales as the visitors came across the international bridge over the Rio Grande River. The fun began even before leaving the U.S. side, with WinSee TOURIST pg. 24

Submitted by Ruth Filz Martha Little and her husband Irv first came to Palm Gardens RV Park in Harlingen in 2008 and enjoyed the area, finally buying a place in 2010. Martha came from a long line of quilters. Her grandmother made quilts out of sugar sacks while her mother used old clothing. Martha’s youngest daughter is also learning to quilt. When she first came to Palm Gardens, Martha brought her sewing machine and material. During the first year she had other quilters from the park to her house for lessons. Once she had a few other people, they started quilting at the hall. In the spring of 2010, Martha learned she had cancer and had chemo treatments, resulting in the loss of her hair. During the chemo sessions, she met other sewers and discussed making chemo caps. Her quilt guild in Port Perry, Canada obtained a couple of patterns and made several caps. Martha lived with the cancer until her death in May 2014. During this period, she joined a cancer support group at Hearth Place in Toronto. The group provided support for the patient plus the family and is run solely on support from the public. The Port Perry Quilt Guild made

several caps that were donated to Hearth Place. After Martha died, her husband Irv approached the quilters at Palm Gardens and spoke to Sherry Polk about making caps. That year, residents made over 50 caps that were later supplied to Hearth Place. Each cap was given to a cancer patient who had lost her hair during chemo. Several of the caps made by Palm Gardens were also donated to St. Jude’s for the children cancer patients. For the past seven years, every February Palm Gardens residents get together to make cancer caps that are given to Texas Oncology and Valley Cancer Associates in Harlingen and also send some back to Port Perry, Canada with Irv. Over the years, the group has also made and donated port pillows (provides cushion between the chemo port and the car’s seat belt). This year residents obtained patterns to also crochet and knit caps. Thanks to Martha’s vision and the initiative she started, and to the residents of Palm Gardens who cut and sewed caps and port pillows, who crocheted and knitted caps, and who provided monetary donations, we are happy to donate to Texas Oncology and Valley Cancer Associates in Harlingen and to Port Perry in Canada. This year’s donations were 186 tee-shirt material caps, 86 cotton material caps, 250 crochet or knit caps, and 125 port pillows.

Thousands of stitches sewn to thank veterans

Submitted by E. Louise Baker, Tropic Star Quilter Tropic Star Park hosted a very special event on Sunday, March 6. Fifty-six veterans were honored with the presentation of a patriotic quilt made by the quilting ladies of Tropic Star. This special event began three years ago. Someone shared the idea of honoring the veterans in our park with a patriotic quilt. Identifying the veterans in our park was completed by a dedicated committee. Their results were shocking. How could our quilting group produce all the quilts needed? However, work began, and word spread about the project. Soon many folks were supporting the large project. The quilters sewed, others cut the fabric, some pressed as the sewing progressed. Some quilters made the tops at their summer homes. Many contributed funds to purchase fabric

and pay for the quilting. What an exciting adventure. To date, 108 quilts have been presented to the veterans residing in Tropic Star Park. The first quilts were presented to 30 veterans in 2020. It was such a wonderful feeling to honor our veterans who had given so much. They made great sacrifices so that we Americans can enjoy a peaceful nation. Their sacrifice gives all of us the freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to protest, the right to a fair trial and the right to vote. The project began with honoring those veterans who had served in World War II. Later veterans from other conflicts were honored in the following years. The pandemic did not prevent the dedicated quilters from honoring 20 veterans at an outdoor presentation in 2021. Folks watched, cheered, and See STITCHES pg. 19

Onion was center of attention at Onion Fest

Thousands of people walked the downtown streets of Weslaco, celebrating what may have been the nic-

est day of the year to date, in honor of the 1015 onion. They ate, drank and were entertained – or entertaining - as the much-loved onion, known as the “million-dollar baby” took center stage at the annual festival that returned after a COVID-19 pandemic

halt. It was clear from the hoard of people that they were ready to get out for a beautiful day and enjoy the Texas Onion Fest, which celebrates the development of what has become a world-famous onion developed in Weslaco by Dr. Leonard Pike at the Texas A&M University Extension Service. The festival, which began in 1989, offers cooking demos, a car show, the 1015 Market, dancing horses, an onion-eating contest and more. It also offers onions, plenty of onions. Bags of onions were given away; onions were a key ingredient in many of the foods being sold – especially blooming onions.

“This has been a tradition in Weslaco for a long time,” said James Cano, who was helping the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce distribute some of the free onion bags. “It has created a movement for people to come out once a year and enjoy this.” Linda and Dale Graham walked away from the Freddie Flav’z restaurant tent, each with a blooming onion that was much more than onion. It was more like a blooming onion on steroids. “It’s heavy,” Linda said. “There’s meat in there.” The couple, from Elsworth, Illinois, has been visiting the Valley for 11 years and lives in Country Sunshine RV Park in Weslaco. wiches – just bread and sliced raw onions. “Oh no, I can’t go that far,” Linda said. “But I do like them with roast beef or on roasted sandwiches.” Frank Macias, owner of Frankie Flav’z Craft Burgers and BBQ, said he didn’t want to make just an ordinary onion blossom so, like his burgers, he came up with something unique. “It’s a brisket blossom,” he said. “It has chopped brisket, pico de gallo, queso fresco, barbeque sauce and some cilantro. What better toppings, it all blends in well.” Sindy Norris is a converted Winter Texan from Iowa who visited for four years. She said the people in the park converted her. It was her first time at the Onion Fest. See ONION pg. 15

You are going to be missed

It’s that time of the year. Our Winter Texan friends are departing for their summer homes. No doubt your friends and family missed you while you were gone. But we are going to miss you also. Please have a safe trip home and come back again next winter. We will be waiting for you. We would all be remiss if we did not take the time to say thank you for all that you do for the Rio Grande Valley. You are like a breath of fresh air when you give of your time, your talents and your love and compassion to the people of South Texas. How could we do it without you? So many of you look for ways to contribute to us. Not just with the purchases you make but with other contributions that cannot be measured. Thank you. First of all, we need to be reminded of the used and outgrown winter coats that you bring to contribute to our needy families and children. Cold winter days are rare in our Rio Grande Valley. But when they do occur many children will stay home from school for lack of warm clothing. The coats you bring help

to keep those children warm and in school. Thank you. Not all families are able to pay for tutors to help their children learn to read or do their sums. A wonderful program called HOSTS is always looking for volunteers. And you answered the call. You “Helped One Student To Succeed” and that is what HOSTS stands for. What a blessing you are. Thank you. And how about the quilting bees where so many of you get together to make and donate lap quilts for those in nursing homes or in a veterans’ hospital? Or perhaps you were able to knit or crochet a small afghan to wrap around cold and weary shoulders. Your loving hands bring comfort to those who perhaps are no longer able to be out and about. Thank you. At Christmas time you bring joy to those who might not receive a gift from Santa if it were not for you. You are very, very special. Thank you. Please have a safe trip home. Until we meet again.

Pirate’s Landing brightened my day

It was an overcast day as I sat inside P i r a t e ’s Landing, looking over a varied menu that appeals to adults and children alike. But, hey, I was in Port Isabel, by South Padre Island, so who’s complaining? The temperature outside was about 72, the music was at a perfect volume, so people didn’t have to scream over it and, after a couple weeks of cold, windy, gloomy weather it was a nice change of pace – and that was even before I ate, which tells me it’s gonna be a good day. I ordered the seafood stuffed mushrooms, covered in Alfredo sauce and some parmesan cheese. I forgot from my last trip here not just how tasty this appetizer is, but how filling it is. I topped it off with some Pirates Landing hot sauce and was on my way to a day of deliciousness. I ordered the ranchero shrimp. It felt a little strange that they came with rice, charro beans and Since 1964 tortillas but, hey, we are on the U.S./Mexico border so why not? I could smell the plate before it arrived as my Try Our server walked toward my booth. When he placed it Famous in front of me, a smile came across my face seeing Enchiladas how many ready-for-me only shrimp were laying around with the red ranchero sauce and onions and peppers mixed within. Wayne Uncer. “Our most heartfelt gratitude to everyone supporting and donating to our cause.” The band is a traditional bluegrass band filled with Rio Grande Valley Winter Texans. It is a great bunch of talented musicians sharing wonderful harmonies and some of the best instrumentals you’ll hear in Texas. They have performed all over the Valley for the past six years raising money for St. Jude’s.

Art Walk kicks off Irish Fest

The McAllen Art Walk will kickoff the Irish Fest on Friday, April 1, at the McAllen Incubator, located at 601 N Main St; premiering the gallery exhibit for the month of April. The exhibit is a multimedia and interactive art experience created by a team of Rio Grande Valley artists in all types of mediums, from classic acrylic on canvas to textural projections, photography, and guided storytelling. The exhibit titled “This Dark Land,” explores the myth and folklore of the Celtic Isles, transporting the visitor through involved surrealism and eerie dreamscapes. Drawing from the Irish landscape and its dark mythologies, more than seven artists and a team of students will build an enchanted world that engages all the senses and inspires a sense of wonder. Make it a night out in the McAllen Arts District for Aprils Art Walk to get a first look.

The event welcomes you back on April 2nd, for the South Texas Irish Festival from 12 p.m.-7 p.m. where the featured cultural experience engages all the senses. From visual and interactive art exhibits, music workshops, family games and storytelling too. A free whiskey tasting flight of three varying casks will be offered on the mezzanine of the McAllen Incubator, a prime view that will let you see the entire festival at once. With all day entertainment and traditional Irish Bread Bowl stew and Shepherd’s Pie by Chef Adrian Luna, whiskey will round off the fest experience authentically and deliciously! Raising Cane’s, as a sponsor to the Irish Fest, will also be providing a GREEN lemonade stand free to festival goers while supplies last. Be sure to follow the South Texas See IRISH FEST pg. 19

a plethora of accessories and many other items. One booth used a liquid substance to create “piercings” and several Winter Texans lined up to see how they looked with a temporary nose piercing. The liquid hardens and then is easily washed off. All of this celebration in homage to an onion. Ironically, it was enough to make a personified 1015 onion cry.

Speer hosts book discussion

By William Renner, Reference Librarian Join Speer Memorial Library in Mission on Tuesday, April 5, for a discussion of the book The Great Quake, to take place in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book. Good Friday, March 27, 1964, 5:36 p.m. Southern Alaska is struck by the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America— the second most powerful in world history. At 9.2 on the Richter scale, its violent shaking causes deaths and major damage in Anchorage, Valdez, and other towns. But the tsunamis that it generates produce even more death and destruction—and not just in Alaska, but also as far away as California. They even do damage in Hawaii and Japan. Southern Alaska is an area that George Plafker knows quite well from his many summer hiking expeditions there. But flying above it, two days after the earthquake, as-

sessing the aftermath as a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, he is shocked by what he sees. It is not only the structural damage, but the changes to the landscape itself, that draw his attention. After many observations, both from the air and on the ground, Mr. Plafker shifts his career focus to the study of earthquakes. Years later, his work leads to the confirmation of the theory of plate tectonics, the idea that the earth’s crust consists of different

sections, or plates, all moving in slow motion in relation to one another. This explains many geographic features of the earth, as well as earthquakes, and is a major scientific advance. Written by Henry Fountain, and first published in 2017, The Great Quake is a tale of the fury of nature, the story of how an earthquake upended the lives of individuals and communities—and of how it left an indelible mark on science itself. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

pillows the organization makes. They showed the pillows that are donated to the Humane Society of Harlingen. Loaves and Fishes told them the pillows would also give the homeless a comfortable place to rest their sleeping heads on instead of plastic bags or the concrete. Linda Greenlee, president of Bonham’s Bears, said that, for the first time in over 20 years, Bonham’s Bears is considering making teddy bears during the summer, depending on whether enough people volunteer, and someone is willing to head up the summer effort. Carrie Correll, who donated some material this year, said she volunteers at a thrift shop, noting that the shop throws away a lot of sheets and pillowcases. These will now be collected and used for the pillow project. Along with the project possibly continuing during the summer months, organizers plan to get Green Bay South residents to help collect personal hygiene items to donate as well. Each organization presented information about their purpose and where the donations go, how they help the people they serve. Adrianna Hernandez at Family Crisis Center, said all their services are free, including a shelter that holds 30 people. They also have a thrift shop they need volunteers for at 124 W. Jackson St., in Harlingen (Repeat Performance Thrift Shop). All proceeds from the thrift shop fund expenses for the families they serve, including birth certificates, clothing, and other items. The teddy bears are at the shelter entrance and each counselor uses a teddy bear in their work. Children’s Bereavement Center offers free counseling and therapy to help grieving children ages three to 24. Ernest Espinoza said they have a Hall of Tears showing the children’s drawings of loved ones that were lost, including 100 lost to COVID last year. They also have a “buddy barn” where the teddy bears will be placed. Each child draws a stuffed animal from the buddy barn. Visit

CBC-RGV.org for more information. Rainbow RGV Community Partners is a non-profit and state-funded organization that provides rooms to help children removed from their homes, often in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their back. Emma Menchaca with Rainbow Rooms, said they have simple requests, and then some not-so-simple requests. Recently, they had one child asking for a bath because he had not bathed in two weeks. A 21-year-old brother was struggling to keep his siblings together and, in despair, committed suicide. The siblings asked for a funeral for their brother and volunteers stepped up and raised money for that funeral. About 75% of the children they help do not graduate from high school, said Menchaca. Of those, 50% are immediately homeless. The Rainbow Room was able to throw a graduation party for one girl, who was the first in her family to graduate. “The children want family,” she said. Every child, even the teens, gets a teddy bear. Loaves and Fishes is also a non-profit organization and receives a lot of help from the Winter Texans every season, especially around Christmas time. The organization has an outreach program where vehicles are driven to the homeless, many of whom are military veterans. They distribute a meal, personal hygiene kits, socks, coats, and a blanket to those they find. They also operate a kitchen that provides breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also has rooms for women with children and a bunk area for men at their 514 South E. St., in Harlingen, where there are also counselors, nurses and caseworkers. Volunteers are always needed. Visit their website at lfrgv. org for more information. Lt. Pablo Sanchez, from the fire department, said that every morning “we check the firetruck engines, firefighting equipment, and teddy bears on board.” There are a lot of traffic accidents, he added, and we

use the teddy bears to reach out to young people of all ages. Some children are stunned and silent. Others say, “I don’t want a teddy bear; I want my mommy.” “We firefighters know that later, after recovery, the children will remember the teddy bears,” said San-

to meet my family. I remember lots of great Halloween and Christmas events as well. I grew up to love you, the Winter Texans, that visit our community year after year – as did my husband. We want to thank you, our readers, park owners and managers, activity directors, and Wintertainers™ for the great community you have built here in the Rio Grande Valley. Without this community – without you – we would not have this opportunity to work and play in your community and bring your community newspaper to you every week from October through March. Again, we had so much fun this

year and look forward to an exciting season next year. We have thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you and had one of the best Valley Star Awards shows this year – which we are taking over (so sad to see Robert and Billie Ferguson leave), and know we have some big shoes to fill. We do intend to keep that show packed with fun and talented Wintertainers™. Thank you for this great season. We love our Winter Texans, and we pray for your health and safety as you travel back north. Stay safe and healthy, and hurry back next fall. We can’t wait to do this again!

saluted our veterans from their golf carts on a beautiful spring morning. This was another great emotional event as the red, white, and blue lap size quilts were presented to the honored veterans. The most recent event, presenting 56 quilts to our honored veterans, was truly full of emotion. Around 300 folks (family and friends) stood to honor the 56 veterans as they proceeded down the aisle following the Tropic Star flag bearers of America and each branch of the service. Some veterans proceeded with their walkers, some with crutches, but all proud veterans. The honored folks, including three ladies, had

served their country in a variety of ways and in many conflicts. The Veterans Quilting Committee proudly displayed the full quilt before it was presented to each veteran. Patti Hoerr, Chairperson for the Sewing Room at Tropic Star, shared the veterans specific service as the quilt was presented. Fifty-six quilts. Each a different design made by folks who wanted to show appreciation for the sacrifices the veterans had made. Sewn in each quilt is a label that reads: “One Quilt to Warm You– Thousands of Stitches to Thank you,” Tropic Star Military Quilters.
