Winter Texan Ambassadors Wanted

If you love coming down to the Rio Grande Valley each winter, you’re invited to become a Winter Texan Ambassador. The job is simple: share with your friends all the good times you have in the Valley each winter – away from the snow and ice. In a place where you can play golf almost any winter day. In a place where your MH & RV resort is a community of its own with lots of friends to share in a whole array of fun activities.

Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show runs March 10-20

The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Showgrounds are going to be full of animals and people beginning tomorrow as the event celebrates its 83rd year. The event will feature its senior discount day on Wednesday, March 16. The show was organized in 1939 to support an educational environment that promotes family, community and volunteerism highlighting the Valley’s agriculture and students that participate in growing animals. Upper Valley golf courses receive some needed TLC

The past couple of years have been difficult for many businesses. While not knowing if they were going to be opened or closed, it gave directors of golf, owners, golf pros and those who make decisions an opportunity to make some tweaks to their courses – minor to major. We invite you to try out a new course, or two or three, and then let us know about your favorites in our golf course survey. We would also like to solicit additional feedback for our wrap up story. And if you would, attach a short note to your ballot, telling us why you voted the way you did. We would love to hear your See GOLF pg. 14

Larry DeBuse golf tournament held

Larry and Susan DeBuse, formerly of Green Gate Grove in Palm View, were honored at the Larry DeBuse Invitational Golf Tournament, held at Shary Golf Course on March 2. Kathy Roberts and her team organized the event to raise funds for the Parkinson’s Foundation, Inc. and continues Larry’s annual golf outing, The Annual Not Ready for the PGA Golf Fun Day Invitational, which he ran for the last 6 seasons. This year’s event featured a nine-hole, four person scramble with a full slate of 11 teams. The event was capped off by a luncheon, served by the Shary Golf Course staff, and an award ceremony emceed by Jesse Hansen. Congratulations go to first place winners, the Lynda Colton Team, who shot five under par and who won an 18-hole pass to Shary Golf Course. The event raised over $3,600 for the fight against Parkinson’s Disease through entrance fees, the sale of refreshments and mulligans, a 50/50 drawing, an auction and through the many generous donations of others. The DeBuse family has returned to their home in Bella Vista, AR, as Larry continues his fight against Parkinson’s Disease. If you have an event or special someone in your park.... let us know. Russell, a flag bearer, said Theresa Howard is the instructor and choreographer. Russell also has served as the park’s entertainment coordinator for the past six years. When it came to awarding of the Alamo Chamber of Commerce sponsored trophies, Trophy Gardens was the overwhelming grand prize winner. The top trophy was handed to queen Bonnie to hold for all the photo taking. The other winners were 1st place—Sand Devils Motorcycle Club; 2nd place—Alamo Code Enforcement entry, and 3rd place— PSJA Memorial High School mariachi group, who performed on stage following the parade. In keeping with the western theme, honorary parade marshal Constable Martin Cantu from Precinct 2, rode the route on horseback. He took a moment at the end of the parade to thank all those for coming. A brief performance by the PSJA Memorial cheerleaders followed. on March 6, 1836, its rallying cry launched Texas toward independence from Mexico. The Chamber of Commerce parade is one of only a few in the entire state of Texas to remember the 13-day battle between 1,800 to 6,000 Mexican soldiers under General Santa Anna and 189 defenders of the Alamo under Lt. Col. William Travis that came to a bloody conclusion on that fateful day when Santa Ana ordered an assault on the San Antonio mission complex in which 600 or more Mexican soldiers died along with all the Texas defenders. The only Americans to survive were civilians, almost all women and children. While the price was high, it gave enough time for 59 politicians in the hamlet of Washington on the Brazos to hammer out a declaration of independence from Mexico four days earlier. It was April 21, 1836, that a Texan force led by Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna’s army of 1,500 men at San Jacinto, near present day Houston. It was marked by the rallying cry of “Remember the Alamo.” It also ended the war for independence from Mexico and created a new nation—the Republic of Texas.

You’ll want to tell your friends about the dances in your park, the jam sessions, craft sales, pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials and the wonderful Wintertainers™ performing daily in the resorts. If you like country music, there’s a jam for you and a number of quality bands performing for country-western dances. If your preference is rock-n-roll or bluegrass, you’re not disappointed. There are many talented performers who come to the Rio Grande Valley from Branson, Nashville and other locales during the winter season. Be sure to tell your friends about the very affordable cost of living in the Rio Grande Valley! Not only do you save a ton of money on heating fuel to keep you warm in the winter, but everything costs less than in most other areas of the country. It’s a great place to make your retirement dollars stretch further, enabling you to enjoy a great lifestyle with all your new friends in Deep South Texas.

The Winter Texan Times will be publishing our annual “Take Home Edition” of the paper on March 16 for you to take home with you so you can show your friends up north all the fun times we have here in the Rio Grande Valley. If you can help us spread the word, give us a call today and tell us how many papers you would like to take back north with you to share with others. Most people take 25 to 50 extra copies of the Take Home Edition to share with their friends. We hope you will do the same and invite your friends to come down with you next winter and give us a try. Give us a call at (956) 580-7800 before close of business on March 12 and we will put you on our list of Winter Texan Ambassadors and make arrangements for you to get the papers you need on March 16. If you are leaving before March 16, take some extra copies of our earlier editions, including today’s paper, to share with the folks back home.

park. “You never know when you might want to stay here full time and might like a new home.” Meikle added, “The corndogs are pretty good as well,” which was offered free along with pop to all visitors. After seven years at Tropic Star RV & MH Resort, Marth said it’s the weather, things to do, especially dancing, and the Branson (Missouri) entertainment that attracts her. Meikle, who came to the “Valley in 2005,” said he likes “jams, including bluegrass music.” He mentioned he and Marth were making a day of it, having started at a couple of park yard sales in the morning, the open house in the afternoon and maybe karaoke to end the day. General Manager Doug Fowler said, the number of visitors wasn’t quite as high as in previous years, but it was still a good turnout. The open house was a bit later than usual, which might have had some impact on the numbers. Sprinkled in

amongst the Winter Texans were some local residents who are also an important part of Clayton Homes clientele, Fowler noted. Fowler mentioned that during his 30 years at Clayton Homes, they have been regular advertisers in the Winter Texan Times, which he indicated is an important source to reach those readers.

Shary Municipal Golf Course At one point it seemed that different parts of this course were under construction for a long time. Temporary greens, ground under construction and more. It never stopped attracting golfers and it’s all been worth it. You won’t recognize these greens now. The course purchased some new equipment that doesn’t tear out the grass and these are comparable now to the best greens across the Rio Grande Valley. Such is the case at Monte Cristo Golf & Country Club. “It’s a different course. They’ve worked on the fairways and made a lot of things better,” were the comments from the pro shop. This course needed only some tender loving care, and it’s getting it. It may be somewhat out of the way, but the scenic holes, the refreshing air – and oftentimes heavy wind – combined with a fairly simple layout makes this a pleasu-

www.wintertexantimes.com rable course to play even under the most stressful of days. Their island hole is tougher than it looks with the wind, and you need to make sure you get enough air under your ball so it sticks. But the big question is – do you want to grip it and rip it? Tierra Del Sol Golf Course By now everyone should know that Tierra Del Sol underwent a major facelift a few years ago and the changes have been remarkable. What’s even better is that they keep up with the maintenance to make sure those changes remain in play for their golfers. Tierra Del Sol has a wide variety of layouts and some of the nicest rolling greens in the Valley. Several holes let you stand there and “grip

it and rip it,” even if you kick out a banana hook or slice every once in a while. Coming up 18 with the Clubhouse rising up behind the finishing hole makes you feel like you’re on some type of private country club estate. It is a beautiful way to end the round on a fun golf course to tackle. Address: 700 E. Where does your favorite food originate?

No doubt at one time or another during your life you have wondered about your heritage. Where did your parents or grandparents come from? Did they come from Europe? From Mexico? From South America or from Canada? Or were they Native American? If we look far enough back on our heritage, we will probably find that somewhere back in past generations we had relatives who were immigrants. Immigration just seems to be a natural process as people look for a better life, a safer environment or a better paying job. Migration and immigration have no doubt existed from the beginning of time. On our own continent immigration originally was from the North to the South

with the immigrants looking for better conditions to raise their crops. During the 1800’s many persons in the United States were moving from the East to the West with many lured by the offer of free land or gold. Others were looking for adventure. Today those of us who live in the United States just call ourselves a mobile society. As people migrate from one place to another, they bring with them new foods, new plants, different animals, and customs and sometimes a different language. They sometimes even introduce new diseases. When the Spaniards arrived in New Spain or what we know as Mexico they introduced horses and cattle. In turn they found tomatoes,

WINTER TEXAN TIMES

com, squash, and beans as well as nutmeg and other spices. Later, when the Mexican people began to migrate into what is now the United States, they brought tortillas and tamales and empanadas - an empanada is a fruit filled baked pie similar to our southern fried pie. The cattle and horses that came with these immigrants brought the mesquite bean in their bellies and now we have the mesquite tree all over Texas and it seems to be spreading to the North. But who introduced us to Barbeque, the American hot dog and apple pie? Food for thought, right? If you begin to research these questions, you may find different answers. Barbeque may have originated in the Caribbean, or it could have come from the vaqueros (cowboys) of South America and Mexico or maybe even from the camp cooks who worked on the cattle drives from Texas to Kansas.

Looking for a change of scenery? New shuffle courts? Pickleball?

The hotdog? Germany would like to take credit but so would New York where sausages were sold on the street. Since eating a sausage with your bare hands was greasy and messy, a bun was wrapped around the sausage and there you have it the hot dog. Why not do a little research on your favorite food? You may find that many of the foods and dishes of the Southern states came with the African slaves when they were brought into the United States. Turnip greens? Com bread? Black eyed peas? Here’s How It Works

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
