Canadians enjoy Riverside Club celebration
Many Canadians really get into the spirit, wearing their Canadian Day attire, as did Hope & Garth Jones, of New Brunswick, at last year’s celebration.

By Brittany Asbury Regine and Ken, of Manitoba, Canada, took the complimentary golfcart ride from the Riverside Club’s overflow parking to the club itself for the annual Canada Day celebration, and enjoyed the ride in the warm air. “It’s our sixth year in the Valley,” Ken said with a smile. “We’re ‘too old to be cold.’ We even have that painted on the side of our trailer.” The warm Texas weather was the main draw for many more Canadians and
other Winter Texans who came south and gathered on Canada Day at the Riverside Club in Mission, Texas. Phil and Mary Jo Dobberfuhl, of Oconomowoc, Wis., travelled down to the Valley for the very first time, and were delighted to become Winter Texans. “What I like so far is having a nice cigar outside,” Phil said with a smile. “Having bare feet,” Mary Jo chimed in. “Not having to put on a coat outside,” they both continued. “Driving with the

I never thought we’d actually get to see the Rio Grande, but there it is,” Phil added, as he watched the river waters flow gently by. From pg. 01 McAllen Convention Center,” Gary said. “We look in the Winter Texan Times for music and interesting items for sale. We went to Quinta Mazatlan for the World Birding Center, and went on nature walks. We got to see an ocelot stalking.” Larry and Paula Barnes, of Missouri, were also outside enjoying the weather at a cafe table. “It’s our sixth winter here. We like to play bingo, go to dinner and dances, take a riverboat cruise, go to South Padre Island and sit on the beach. We went to Mexico.” Bill and Velva Frazier, who shared the Barnes’ table, added that they read the Winter Texan Times every week for things to do. “I like to see what’s going on, what’s for sale, get information on reunions and meetings.” Just one table over were two more couples from Wisconsin. Gene and Georgene, of Birchwood, are dairy farmers who rearranged their schedule to come down to Texas for the winter, while Harold and Nancy Stein, of Mikana, are both retired. “We’re enjoying the weather,” Gene said, and Nancy Stein added, “It’s just nice because everyone is friendly down here.” The friendly nature of Texas and oth-

er Winter Texans is what brought Fred and Gladys Fiss, of Dobbimkon, Canada, back to the Valley. “It’s our sixth season down here, at Alamo Palms. We were hesitant to come…but we made new friends,” Fred explained, and gestured to Bob and Eula Broadway. “They’ve adopted us.” “What we find in common down here is a lot of old people!” Bob added, laughing. Ghaislaine Gagnom and her husband Jean-Paul Mallette, with their friends Linda Vaccheno and her husband Robaire Brissom, and Christiane Leclerc and her husband Jean-Yves Turjeon, were all visiting the Valley for the second time, but were visiting the Riverside Club for the first time. “We’re here because we’ve seen that this was supposed to be Canada Day,” Ghaislaine explained, translating from French for her friends. “We’ve gone everywhere. Mexico a few times. My husband likes Walmart and restaurants. He likes shopping and eating!” Mallette nodded agreement and laughed as Ghaislaine went on. “I do handicrafts. Quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting; made some furniture for inside the motorhome. I do a little of everything; it’s in the family, we’re all handy people.”

Willie & Company at Llano Grande Friday
Willie & Company will be performing at Llano Grande, Friday, Mar. 11. Willie is not just a character, he is definitely the star of the show. Just ask him. Peggy Miller, a renown ventriloquist, has been entertaining people worldwide for more than two decades with Willie. Willie can be a smart aleck, but deep down he is a totally sincere young man whose has an ability to get his audience involved in his show. He often shares the show with his great-great granny who charms folks from her generation. His cousin Hannah, a wanna-be star, also comes along at times. It is a unique show where audiences almost believe Willie is a real boy.
CANADA
From pg. 04 Inside the building, hidden from the diners outside, the celebration of Canada Day was going on. Gordon and Mary Ann Stewart, of Winchester, Ontario, were sharing a long table with several other Canadians, including Helen Link and Will Wilson, both from Ottawa. “We’re all down here to celebrate Canada Day, here for the entertainment. We’re staying in Pleasant Valley Park, in Mission. We go to Mexico, play bingo at different parks, golf, go to South Padre Island once or twice a year, go to jams.” “We enjoy the sun, and music jams. No snow is wonderful,” Helen said.

Brownsville Museum plans Taste of Texas Brownsville’s newest museum, Laureles House, located at 1501 E. 7th Street in Linear Park, will be the site of the sixth annual Taste of Texas event to be held Saturday, Mar. 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will feature wine tastings from around the world and spirits and craft beers unique to the Lone Star State. There will be a sampling of hor d’oeurves and food pairings with a live Bluegrass band providing the music. “Or ice rain,” Mary Ann agreed. Randy and Judy Buchko, of Manitoba, agreed that weather was the real draw. “We’ve been coming down here for 24 years. We tried all the other places, but we like Texas best. We’re not ‘Snowbirds,’ we’re Winter Texans!” One table down,Pierre Pellerin, working his English around French translations for his wife, Ginette, and his friends Gilles and Lucie Charbonneau, was enthusiastic about getting away from the snow. “We all stay in Sleepy Valley Park. This is our fourth year in the Valley; last year we bought a house, so we expect to come here more a few more years. The first reason we came here is because people here are so welcoming, and the second?” He laughed. “The weather!”

Tilted Kilt
Where good times are alWays on tap! If you haven’t experienced the Tilted Kilt, then you are missing out! Located on the south side of Expressway 83 just West of Ware Rd. in McAllen, this Celtic-themed restaurant offers a total sensory experience. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by one of their beautiful and friendly Kilt Girls and ushered to a comfortable table. Surrounded by a warm pub-like atmosphere you also have a 360° view of multiple HD television screens streaming all the sports action you can handle. From classic pub fare to gourmet burgers, the menu is sure to have something for everyone in your group to enjoy. Their burger selection includes the Big Arse® Burger that comes with a ½ lb. high quality ground beef patty, made to order and served with your choice of side. If you’re extra hungry, you can even “Make It A Dublin” by adding a second ½ lb. beef patty and double the cheese. Other burger choices include the Wicked Boston Burger that comes with Maple pepper bacon, American cheese, caramelized onion relish, burger sauce, leaf lettuce and ripe tomato. The Hot Mess Burger is a fork and knife burger with TK chili, cheddar cheese, smothered with Monterey Jack cheese sauce. The Big Arse® Classic burger comes with pickle chips, leaf lettuce, ripe to-

Any time of year the tender beef pot roast, mixed with vegetables and a rich and hearty Guinness® beef stock served with a side of garlic bread is a delicious choice! If you like sandwiches we suggest The ‘Kilt® Club, or if you are in the mood for something different, try their Creamy Pub Pasta! If you have a sweet tooth, their Tilted Guilt will complete any meal. Chimney Park residents donate to Mission Food Pantry
Al & Gail Quivey (L) and Lloyd Burns (R) present donations of $907 From Chimney RV Park to Adela Ortega, Mission Food Pantry Director
New, larger headquarters of Mission Food Pantry, 115. S. Mayberry, Mission
Al and Gail Quivey and Lloyd Burns gave a donation of $952 plus 175 food donations to the new Mission Food Pantry, located at 115 S. Mayberry Road near CWV (Catholic War Veterans) Park in Mission. Adela Ortega, Mission Food Pantry Director gladly accepted the donation. “Our Winter Texans help the Mission Food Pantry so much when they are here from November to April. We get many food donations. The food helps us feed our families. The cash donations are used to purchase food from Foy’s Supermarket
at cost to supply needed items not donated,” Ortega said. Many Winter Texan parks work to help the Mission Food Pantry, she said. As an example, Mission Bell and Tradewinds Resorts held a Ropa Usada Style Show where admission was a can of food for the pantry. They auctioned off the clothes along with other silent auction items afterwards and the money, a total of $367, was donated with 427 items of food for the needy in the community.
