Texas Butterfly Festival highlights peak of butterfly season

23rd annual RGV Birding Festival opens Nov. 2 People flock to Harlingen, Texas year after year to attend the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival to enjoy the treasures of nature right here in our own backyard. Some of the top reasons folks enjoy the Birding Festival are: First, there are almost 500 documented bird species found in the RGV; Second, there are over 20 birds species here that are found nowhere else in the U.S.; Third, the festival offers an abundance of guided field trips with low guide-to-participant ratios; and Fourth, folks really enjoy the relaxing atmosphere with warm weather and a friendly, affordable host city – Harlingen, Texas. This year’s 23rd annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival will be held in Harlingen Nov. 2-6. It will headquarter out of the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium.

USA Today calls Mission, Texas “the Butterfly Capitol of the USA.” Now, at the peak of butterfly season, visitors are coming to Mission from all parts of the United States to see as many of these beautifully delightful creations as possible during the 21st annual Texas Butterfly Festival. The festival kicks off with a free Community Day on October 29 and runs through November 2 with a series of field trips and seminars at the National Butterfly Center (NBC) in Mission. Last year, visitors from 22 states and five foreign countries participated in the festival, which takes place in an area that encompasses 11 different habitats and attracts about 300 species of butterflies, along with 500 species of birds and 90 species of dragonflies. The festival takes place during prime butterfly season and is growing in popularity each year. This year, the Texas Butterfly Festival will also be the North American Butterfly Association’s biennial meeting.

There will be field trips designed for beginners and others for experts. While popular trips to Sabal Palms Sanctuary and Camp Lulu Sams are already sold out, other tours still have openings. The Riverboat “Ride & Seek” with Captain Johnny Hart is still available along with the Butterfly Beltway where visitors tour the grounds of the Butterfly Center and the Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park World Birding Center Headquarters, both in Mission. There are trips to Cielo Escondido (Hidden Heaven), The King Family Compound, the Wonders of Weslaco, West (Starr County habitats), and Coastal Specialties. The field trips include Into the Wild, La Sal del Rey (The King’s Salt) and Military Highway. The festival begins on Saturday, Oct. 29 with Community Day, which has become an extremely popular event with the young, and the young at heart, explains See BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL pg. 3

It’s not too late to register, but the field trips are filling up fast, so while the time for preregistration has closed, onsite registration for field trips and seminars will be held Nov. 1 in the morning at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, located at 1204 Fair Park Blvd. Field trips for Nov. 2 include the Upper Rio Grande that includes locations like Salineno, Chapeno, and Falcon. Look for rare Muscovy Ducks, Scaled Quail and Hook-billed Kites. Other finds will include the Greater Roadrunner, White-tIpped Dove and White-collared Seed-eater to name a few. Rancho Lomita will introduce visitors to native plants of the Rio Grande Valley and the ways they were used by early settlers. Las Estrella, a nature conservancy not generally open to the public, is known See BIRDING FESTIVAL pg. 3

erybody how to make what we call butterfly brew. It’s basically a bait for butterflies. It’s made up of putrefied bananas, brown sugar and imported beer so it’s very fragrant to them and it lures them in to feed. We do those demonstrations throughout the day and we let people take a little bit of brew home with them so that they can feed all the butterflies flying through.” “We’ll also have basic bird and butterfly identification sessions where you can walk and talk with our docents and staff members in the gardens to learn about different bird and butterfly species and how to recognize them,” added Wright. “We’ll have some gardening talks as well as the fun stuff that everybody enjoys like face painting, arts, crafts and different games with prizes for the young and for the old. We’ll be open for free that Saturday from around 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is welcome to explore the National Butterfly Center’s formal gardens and wildscapes. We’re continually planting this area, and the birds, the butterflies, the bugs, the mammals and the reptiles should all be active, and out and about, as long as the weather is good.” The National Butterfly Center is open for the public to explore its trails and gardens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. Chimney Park rebounds from May storm

By Kathy Olivarez Once again Chimney Park RV Park has faced a major disaster only to poetically “rise from the ashes” again. In 2010 the park, which sits on the banks of the Rio Grande was flooded when the river overflowed its banks following local sixinch rains compounded by floodwater releases upstream by the U.S. International

Boundary and Water Commission. Many homes were flooded in July of that year. Mother Nature unleashed her destructive forces again on May 31 of this year when up to 100-mile-per-hour wind shears – some called it a tornado – accompanied by heavy rain and large hail See CHIMNEY PARK pg. 12

From pg. 11 stones, swept through the park sending some of the trailers “topsy-turvy”. According to park manager Wendi Burns, there was a line where the tornado wiped out a number of mobile homes. She said there were 90 mobile units in the park, and most of them had at least minor damage. But those in the path of the worst winds were destroyed. Burns was on vacation, 10 hours into driving to St. Louis to see family when the storm came through. At midnight she got the call that a tornado had hit the park and she immediately turned around and headed back to Mission, arriving about 10 a.m. the next morning. “When I arrived things were so chaotic I could not imagine where to even begin the cleanup process,” Burns said. “I was in shock.” Even getting to the park was difficult as there were many vehicles with red lights on Conway Avenue because of the downed power lines. An estimated 68 electric power poles were sheared by the storm. Fortunately, there were only about 12 residents in Chimney Park at the time. Another was a member of the Border Patrol, whose mobile home was turned on end and then picked up and dropped on the other end. Residents present remember hearing

the heavy rain, the pounding of the hail, and then a sound like a freight train, which was the tornado bearing down on them. While the storm was over quickly, many of the 90 units, two apartments and the main building had sustained varying degrees of damage. It took rescue units 25 minutes to get to the park because of the many downed electric lines and trees in their path. Burns said it took two days to get over the shock and then it was time to develop a plan for recovery. Since almost all of the units had some kind of damage, owners who were away had to be notified. Many of them returned and helped with the clean up. Burns gives a great deal of credit to the Mission Police and Fire Departments and the Border Patrol. The Border Patrol brought in large equipment to help with the clearing of debris. Many of the men in those organizations worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help clear out the irreversibly damaged homes and other debris. The Fire Department cooked a meal for residents and the Border Patrol brought in water since the water in the park was undrinkable. “We could not have done it without their help,” said Burns. owners’ return for the winter season. Others, less damaged, have been repaired. When the Winter Texan Times visited the park recently, a new coat of paint was being sprayed on the office/rec hall building. Burns said the roof had some damage. But the major damage came from the water because the tornado blew out all the doors and windows. The rec hall has new flooring and ceiling tiles. The columns on the outside of the porch were destroyed and had to be rebuilt. All in all, the spirit of the residents has been resilient. They lost about 10 residential units. Most were couples in their 80s and 90s who lacked the energy or means to rebuild. Another three couples wanted mobile homes instead of smaller trailers and took the opportunity to move to new locations since their existing units were destroyed. Perhaps the fact the park is right on the river and one of the most scenic places to stay in the Valley has something to do with it. And although there are many illegal crossings on the river, the fact there is a Border Patrol station right in the park makes the residents feel safe. Burns says all 260 lots are ready for occupancy.

Riverside Club A little further down the river, another Winter Texan favorite, the Riverside Club, escaped the brunt of the storm. Johnny Hart, owner, spent his summer clearing away felled trees and landscaping. While he lost nine of his trees, and had some fence damage, neither of his two buildings or his boat, “The Riverside Dreamer,” were damaged. He feels much luckier than he was in 2010 when he lost a brand new building to the floodwaters. This time he was only down four to five days due to the electricity being out. Hart said the tornado started in the Madero area where it took out a number of roofs. It jumped over to Chimney Park where it did the most damage. Jumping across to Oleander Acres it did minor damage on the south end. Then it heavily damaged the De la Fuente home next door. It took out his landscaping before moving on to Granjeno where several homes were destroyed. Then he thinks it moved into Mexico because he did not hear of much more damage on this side of the river. Hart said the felled trees have been removed along with the damaged landscaping. He is open for business on weekends now and is ready for daily service when the Winter Season begins.

Camille Playhouse presents ‘The Addams Family’ for Halloween

Hearkening back to the days of the old black and white TV series, Camille Playhouse is presenting “The Addams Family.” Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family, a man her family has never met. If that were not upsetting enough, Wednesday asks her father, Gomez Addams, to keep it a secret from her mother, Morticia. Everything will change when the family hosts a dinner for the “normal” boyfriend and his parents. The play can be seen October 21-23 and again October 28-30. Future performances will include a musical “Billy Elliot” to be presented Dec. 8-11 and Dec 16-18.

In January look for Maria Callas’ “Master Class,” which features Maria Callas teaching a class in front of an audience. She is glamorous, larger tan life and drop dead funny. “Master Class” can be seen Jan. 27-29 and Feb. 3-5. In March look for “Curtains” set in 1959. Tickets for plays are adults $15. Tickets for musicals are $20. There are performances at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights and matinees at 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Winter Texans can get a ticket for $50 that allows them to see three performances while they are in the Valley. For more information call the Camille Playhouse at 956542-8900.

Year-round residents of Park Place in Harlingen took time in September to remember those whose lives were lost September 11, 2001 when the two planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Peter Douglas, who planned the candlelight ceremony, said volunteers placed white flowers in vases in remembrance of those who lost their lives in service to their fellowmen.

Members of Harlingen’s Fire Station #3 participated along with a group of policemen from La Feria. American Legion Post #205 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2410 also took place in the ceremony. WELCOME

Get ready for some delicious breakfasts during the holidays at Denny’s where three new pancakes have been created just for the holiday season. Norma Reyes, Director of Advertising for the Winter Texan Times, and I met with Joe Trujillo Director of Operations for Denny’s to sample the new items It would not be Thanksgiving without pumpkin so Denny’s is unveiling a new pumpkin cream pancake * breakfast. Norma chose these and we both sampled them. They have the spices found in pumpkin pies and a slightly sweet cream sauce on top. The spicy flavor not usually found in a pancake was a delight! With salted caramel being the rage in candy, cakes, ice creams and coffees, why not salted caramel pancakes? Denny’s are served with bananas in a sweet cream and ribbons of caramel on top. The result is a pancake already so sweet no syrup is needed. Delicious! Joe brought us a third new pancake to try. The whole wheat flax pancake with blackberry sauce had an unusual crunch due to the flax seeds. Since nutritionists recommend eating flax seeds for a variety © 2016 DFO, LLC. Attention Seniors and Baby Boomers Back By Request…

• Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop Reveals • How To Prevent Falls And Improve Your Balance Have you fallen in the past? Are you afraid of falling? Has your balance become more unsteady? Has your walking become more difficult? Have you started using a cane or walker recently? (Or have been told to…but are resisting?) If you have answered yes to any of these questions (or have a stubborn spouse or parent who is in denial) – The Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop may be a life changing (abd possibly life saving) event for you. I see this every day and it can completely ruin your quality of life. • You start to hold on to furniture when you walk • You start to walk slower and constantly look at the floor • You avoid going out of the house whenever possible • You become more reliant on family members, often making you feel guilty about being a burden • You are no longer able to enjoy life (go out with family/friends, take vacation, etc.) And the more you avoid doing these things the more fearful you become that you will fall. This can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Plus, the more you avoid moving..the more likely you are to experience depression, increased stress, muscle weakness, difficulty walking..and a host of other medical issues. NBC receives grant from Family Campers & RVers The National Butterfly Center recently announced it has received a grant from the Family Campers & RVers Wildlife Fund in the amount of $1200. The grant was given to NBC to honor its work with preservation of butterfly habitat for over 300 species of butterflies and their educational outreach program and work with Girl Scout camping programs. The grant was submitted by DeWayne and June Johnston and other members of the Winter Texan Chapter of FCRV, which is composed of 130 couples and

singles who live in various parts of the United States and Canada but who winter in the Rio Grande Valley. Marianna Wright, director of NBC, said the grant would be used to enhance their educational programs for Girl Scouts. Wright said local Girl Scouts have come up with a fun patch called Monarchs, Milkweed and Me where scouts learn more about the endangered Monarchs and how to help preserve them. Wright explained it was not an official Girl Scout badge because those

were planned and designated by the national organization. This patch is designed to teach girls in the Valley more about its butterflies and the ecology that preserves them. The girls learn the ways in which milkweed plants are needed to host monarchs during their migration. it is the only plant they eat or live on unlike other butterflies that have several choices of food or habitat. They also make posters to take home or for businesses explaining about the need to preserve or plant habitat for monarchs as they travel.

Girls who work on the patch learn to spot Monarchs and other butterflies who look similar but are not Monarchs like fritillaries. As part of their fun patch or for the official Girl Scout Camping 101 badge, there is an overnight campout where girls learn to pitch tents and spend the night at the butterfly center. Wright said they started letting the scouts have a campout one or twice a year while doing badge work because so many parks

Exploring new worlds While we are not part of Captain Kirk’s crew aboard the USS Enterprise commissioned to explore new worlds, there are often many things in life we get to explore after retiring from busy careers. Yearning to try your hand at a skill you have never tried before? For those who have never developed their artistic talent, or perhaps never even picked up a paintbrush or tried to mix colors for a masterpiece, Painting with a Twist will broaden your artistic horizons. As a non-artist I was a bit intrigued when friends suggested I could do a landscape painting to take home. Knowing I lack basic artistic skills, I went along for the fun. Groups who sign up for the class are invited to bring wine and snacks to the two-hour painting lesson. Perhaps the wine helps to loosen the inhibitions of the non-artist types and bring out their creativity. The people at Painting with a Twist were ready and waiting when our group arrived. Each person was guided to a seat with a small easel holding a blank canvas. Beside the canvas was a palette with a number of different colors on paint, along with paint brushes.

Because our instructor chose a seascape for us, he first told us how to block the area appropriately for sky, water and beaches. When we were ready to begin, he had us blend the yellow and red to get a lovely shade or coral or orange like color of the sunsets often seen on South Padre Island. There was a bit of blue sky as well. The sand on the beach was created with a mixture of brown and yellow while posts on the beach were a darker brown. The water in the picture was a mixture of green and blue to distinguish it from the areas of blue sky. Small white horizontal lines with v’s in them created the effect of waves in the water. Some of those participating were definitely more artistically inclined than others (namely me)! What I lacked in artistic ability I made up in creativity when I realized my painting did not have the masterpiece quality of others in my group. So I painted a surfer who lost his board into my picture being surrounded by sharks and screaming for help! While I did not get home with a gallery quality painting, I did have a good time and took home a painting that gave my family a lot of laughs.

Courtesy photo, Painting with a Twist

There were quite a few in my group who left with paintings that were quite good. Any groups such as the Red Hats or ladies abandoned by golfer husbands that would like to try this activity should call (956) 682-4887. Painting with a Twist is

located at 6400 N 10th Street in McAllen. It is in suite E near the end of the strip mall at that location. Painting sessions are $35. Bring your own wine and refreshments and have a great time!

National Butterfly Center draws media attention

By Kathy Olivarez Marianna Wright, CEO of the National Butterfly Center (NBC) in Mission told the Mission City Council in their Monday, Oct. 10, meeting, the Butterfly Center is drawing favorable attention to Mission as the time for the Texas Butterfly Festival draws near. Wright said many species of butterflies, including the endangered Monarchs could be expected in South Texas during mid- to late October through mid-November, which is the peak of butterfly season. NBC received a Monarch grant of $25,000 because it is the southernmost feeding location for the Monarchs in the United States. Several years ago there was a fire in Mexico during the height of Monarch season and many Monarchs were destroyed. Some estimates said as much as 90 percent of the Monarch population was destroyed. Since that time there has been an effort to see that milkweed, the host plant for Monarchs, is made available along their migration flight path to insure their survival. Wright said the funds received would be used for parks all over South Texas to assure plenty of milkweed as Monarchs make their yearly migrations. Wright said the August issue of Texas Monthly magazine featured “Something in the Way They Move,” a full page edito-

rial featuring the National Butterfly Center in Mission. The magazine reaches 1.8 million people each month and if the city had placed a full page advertisement for the Texas Butterfly Festival, it would have cost $20,000. Another popular publication, “Texas Journey,” the state magazine for the American Automobile Association, will feature information on the Texas Butterfly Festival. It reaches 2.5 million readers and the rates for a full page advertisement are $20,400. WrIght said an episode of “Butterflies an Moths” would be filming at NBC during the festival. This has the potential of reaching 100 million viewers. The attention being drawn to NBC through these three mediums is priceless and publicizes Mission’s unique NBC at no cost to the city. This year’s Texas Butterfly Festival will be held Oct. 29 - Nov. 2 at the National Butterfly Center, located at 3333 Butterfly Park Drive, in Mission. The five-day event features field trips and educational activities for all levels, from beginners to experts. Festival participants can also enjoy private garden tour where home and business owners have planted butterfly gardens that are now awash in butterflies. The festival’s Community Day on Sat-
