Eight-foot bronze sculpture of George Washington located at the Veterans War Memorial in McAllen.

On Saturday, Nov. 12 from 7-9 p.m., the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL) will host an opening reception for a solo exhibition of sculptor Douglas Clark’s artwork. Clark has many commemorative public artworks around the RGV. For example, the Veteran’s War Memorial (29th St. & Galveston St.), a Police Memorial (1602 N. Bicentennial Blvd), a Fireman (201 N. 21st St.), the Forest Sculpture Trail at Quinta Mazatlan, and the butterflies in Mission, to name just a few locations. Outside of the RGV, Clark created a sculpture of Janis Joplin and Wade Phillips for Port Arthur, and a relief sculpture for the grave of Chris Kyle in Austin. Clark studied art at UT-Austin and UT-Pan American, where he currently teaches sculpture in the art department. Experience working as a foundry technician at Texas Tech University and further studies in Mexico, gave him the knowledge and experience to create one of the largest foundries in an

academic institution at UTRGV. This gives Clark the opportunity to cast his own large sculptures, and provides a unique opportunity for his students. This exhibit is a special occasion to view the artwork of an immensely talented master of figurative artworks in a gallery setting. The exhibition runs through Dec. 3, and is free and open to the public. UVAL is located in the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Center at 921 E. 12th St., Mission and is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday, 2 - 6 p.m. The Upper Valley Art League is a membership-based nonprofit arts organization dedicated to teaching, preserving and inspiring the arts in the RGV. For additional information about UVAL, its classes, events and exhibitions, visit the website at uppervalleyartleague.org or call 956-583-2787. Socialize with us on Facebook.

Col. Frank Plummer, (USAF, Ret.), who is in charge of the memorial, said this is the first time a keynote speaker at this level of active duty has spoken at the memorial. Lt. Gen. Donahue is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he is Deputy Commanding General of the 1st Brigade Airborne Division.

Col. Frank Plummer said, “It is an honor to have such a high-ranking active duty officer.” In 2005, Col. Plummer’s son, David, was sent to Afghanistan with the 3rd Battalion of the 141st Infantry Division of the Texas National Guard. While there, Plummer and the other men in his unit were under the command of then Col. Donahue, who was under the 1st Brigade 82nd Airborne Division. After the ceremony is over, he plans to meet with the local men from the 3rd Battalion he served with in Afghanistan along with members of the public who attend. Paradise Park Linus Project blankets children By Henry Miller PHARR—Barton Roth shakes his head and shivers as goose bumps quickly form while he visualizes giving blankets to hundreds of students at Santa Maria Elementary and Runn Elementary schools last year. “They would come up and get their blanket and so this,” he said, showing how they would open their blanket up and in one swift motion put it around themselves. “Many of them would say ‘I finally have a blanket of my own.’” Roth is a veteran and coordinator of Paradise Park’s Linus Project in Pharr. The project’s goal, according to Roth’s LinkedIn profile is to “be able to make and donate as many handmade quilts as possible each year to those who are less fortunate, those terminally ill, and the children in foster care. Quilts are made from donated materials, which we ask for all year long. It takes a lot of time and skill in putting all this together and making over 700 quilts each year for the causes we donate to. Thanks to all whom have donated and to those who would like to help out in advance.” Roth had his own blanket growing up, but he did have to share a bed with his brother. He knows what it’s like to share and what it’s like to have something so dearly for himself, such as a blanket. The

Linus Project is not to be confused with Project Linus, a national organization that also provides blankets to children and those in need. Roth and his fellow members of the project wanted to keep a majority of the blankets local due to the extensive need. Of course, some blankets are still donated to those following major events, like tornadoes in Oklahoma, or severe flooding in Louisiana. The Linus Project, which has been running for about a decade, is named after the Peanuts’ character Linus, who is always walking around with his blanket, and can barely breathe when someone takes, or hides it from him. Roth said the park has more squares of fabric to make blankets than they’ve ever accumulated before. Once the squares are ready, according to Roth’s LinkedIn site then it’s time to “Cut Blocks for quilt top, sewing, assembling the quilt, finishing the quilt. There are also the little jobs people don’t think about, washing fabric, ironing, designing the pattern, and hemming the quilt to tying the quilt. Each part takes a different person to make each quilt possible.” The Linus Project will be delivering again to Runn Elementary, with the Donna School District, on Wednesday, Nov. 15 and then to Santa Maria Elementary,

north of San Benito, on Thursday, Nov. 17. Anyone interested in helping or do-

nating can call Barton Roth at (956) 3309737.

From pg. 1 mander Stefan Walch, commanding officer of the USS Gonzalez, the ship named for Medal of Honor winner Freddie Gonzalez of Edinburg. Walch is visiting the Rio Grande Valley to honor and remember those who died, earning the highest US award for bravery and courage in combat. The memorial will start at 11 a.m. on November 11 at Veterans War Memorial of Texas. Preliminary activities will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a concert with the McAllen band and choir, dressed in tuxedos and ball gowns singing patriotic and religious music. “The choir will perform ‘Amazing Grace’ with their wonderful voices and accompanying band music,” said Col. Plummer. Another special presentation will be Jacob Patino, a 9-year-old boy from McAuliffe Elementary in McAllen, who will recite the poem, “In Flanders Fields,”

by John McRae. Col. Plummer explained the poem was written by Dr. McRae in 1915 at the Battle of Ypres. “The battle lasted 35 days and it was the first time the German Army used poison gas. British French and Belgium soldiers were unprepared and there were over 100,000 casualties, averaging over 3,000 causalities a day,” stated Plummer. At the time McRae wrote the poem, he was sitting in the back of an ambulance, grieving over a friend who died in the battle. The poem was an account of what he was seeing. After he wrote it, he wadded it up and threw it away. But another soldier retrieved it and showed it to his commanding officer, who sent the poem to a British magazine, “Punch.” The poem was published and “went viral” around the world, setting the standard for military poetry. McAllen Mayor Jim Darling will serve as master of ceremonies for the memorial and welcome everyone. The public is urged to visit and be part of this Memorial Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Vietnam veterans suffer survivor’s guilt

By Kathy Olivarez I have written many stories about veterans for Veterans Day and had very little trouble finding people to talk to me. Most have been about World War II and a few about Korea or other time periods. But when Winter Texan Times publisher Jim Brunson asked me to speak to some Vietnam veterans and have them recount their memories, I hit a stone wall. Most of the Vietnam veterans did not want to talk about the war. For them, discussing the war brought back emotions they had tried to bury over the years. Many Vietnam veterans suffer feelings of guilt because they are still living when their

buddies were killed in the war. They call it survivor’s guilt. Such is the story of Wally Cavazos. Jose “Wally” Cavazos, a McAllen resident, was a member of the Navy Seabees during his time in the service. Those were the battalions that built roads and bridges so other troops could be moved into the combat areas. Wally was almost ready to graduate from Pan American College when he received word he was about to be drafted. So he registered for the Navy and got a deferment to finish school. After graduating he tried to get a job teaching so he could get another

deferment. No such luck! When he went to the draft board to tell them he found a teaching job, they told him he was being shipped to San Diego the next Sunday. “San Diego,” he thought. ‘That’s not so bad. He imagined he would get some sort of a desk job. Instead, he was assigned to the Seabees and shipped directly to Vietnam without any combat training. It was 1967 and things in Vietnam were just starting to heat up. He was assigned to Hue Phu Bai, a hot area in the north part of South Vietnam. When he arrived he was given an opportunity to choose his assignment. Seeing that he was college educated, he was offered a position as military journalist. When asked what the duties would be, he was told he would have to travel around the area following the soldiers and looking for stories to write for military publications. He was also told he would be replacing the former journalist in the area who had been killed in action. Not liking that, he asked what his other option was. The answer was machine gunner. He suddenly found the position of military journalist quite appealing. While his assignments were such that he saw little military action, he remem-

bers on occasion where he accompanied some doctors on a mercy mission to treat children injured in the war at a location near the border of North Vietnam. The drive to the location was on rough narrow roads with lots of brush and trees where enemy soldiers could hide. It was a very uneasy trip. As the doctors set up their equipment to treat people, they told Cavazos to serve as a lookout. He was to go to the edge of the village and watch for enemy soldiers or other signs of trouble. He was there no more than 15 minutes when he saw 12 men in “white pajamas” the typical uniform of the Viet Cong. Knowing that 12 to one did not place the odds in his favor, he stood up with his gun across his chest and looked at them. Knowing where there was one American there were usually many more, the 12 men did a U-turn and headed back the direction from which they came. Neither side fired a shot. As they left he went back and reported to the doctors who immediately packed up and left. That was the closest he came to combat. When he had completed 18 months of his two-year stint, he was helping build an emergency landing strip at An Hoa when he injured his knee, which was already injured due to an old football injury. Men were working in 12-hour shifts, See SURVIVOR pg. 18

Tip ‘O Texas, Paradise Park residents enjoy park activities By Henry Miller

It may have been the end of the weekend, but that didn’t stop many people from enjoying their Sunday night at the Tip ‘O Texas RV Resort in Pharr. Billiards was going strong as several men got their competitive juices flowing, playing eight-ball in the billiards room just off the main hall. One building over, about 25 residents enjoyed card games of

rummy, gin and who knows what else. A few miles away at Paradise Park in Pharr, about 50 people – some from the park, others being visitors, enjoyed the first movie of the year – Ithaca, starring Alex Neustaedter, Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Popcorn, candy bars, sodas, drinks and other snacks were available for the season-opening event.

items. The sauces, meats and vegetables are cooked there in the restaurant from scratch. We started our meal with the new Kickin’ shrimp appetizer of dusted fried shrimp served with black sesame seeds and a spicy Asian sauce. We also had the onion loaf, another favorite appetizer. And of course we had the traditional French bread with garlic butter sauce. In addition to ribs, the restaurant also serves other top-quality meats. The most popular is three medallion filets with a variety of toppings to go on them. Toppings include wild mushroom sauce, a cabernet Demi-glace, and Bourbon barbecued onions. Or try an Asiago cheese crust. For a salad, I chose the bleu cheese wedge of crispy iceberg lettuce, bleu cheese dressing and crumbles, red onions and a tomato pesto sauce. The pesto sauce

most bleu cheese wedges. For his entrée Oscar from the advertising department took the three medallion filets with loaded mashed potatoes and broccoli and they were gone almost before I got a good look at them. For those who prefer seafood, Tony Roma’s signature seafood dish is a wild-caught salmon filet served in a shrimp and salmon piccata with rice and a veggie of choice. It was excellent. Norma selected the new “Not Your Mama’s Chicken,” two fiveounce chicken breast sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes with a side of baby carrots, parsnips and butternut squash. She loved it. Add a holiday dessert of bread pudding seasoned with holiday spices and a sprinkling of chocolate chips and it is a meal fit for a king! Come on out to Tony Roma’s and enjoy a wonderful meal. Whether it’s one of your old, reliable favorites, or to try out one of their delicious new entrees, you’re in for a great dining experience.

round the clock laying the 180-pound steel metts needed to build the runway. As protection for the Seabees, planes dropped the napalm on the surrounding forests to defoliate them. The soldiers constructing the air strip, especially at night working under spotlights, were easy targets for the enemy hidden in the forests. Just three hours after injuring his knee, Wally’s leg had swollen so badly he could not walk. His meniscus was torn. He was sent to a doctor in Da Nang. When the doctor got through swearing he should never have been sent to Vietnam with that injury in the first place, he gave him two options. The army would operate and fix the leg but he would have to up for another year. Or he could opt for an early out and take care of the leg himself later. While waiting for his dismissal papers he became friends with another military journalist assigned to the same area. Both were married with children so they had a lot in common. They were told by higher command there would not be two of them working the same position and one would have to leave. Neither wanted to leave the location so the commander asked them to write a story. Whoever wrote the best story would stay

and the other would have to go to another location. Cavazos won. Later, when the Vietnamese launched the Tet offensive, he was on the second plane leaving the area, but the location where his friend was reassigned was to be evacuated later. But the evacuation came too late and when the fighting broke out, his friend was killed. “I felt so guilty when he died. I kept thinking if he had won the best story, I would have been left behind and possibly killed instead. But I was able to return home to my family. When I arrived in California, my friend’s wife had already arrived and I wanted to greet her and tell her I was sorry but I was afraid she would blame me for his death.” Cavazos said he still sometimes feels survivor’s guilt. So many men died or were severely wounded, and he suffered nothing more than a knee injury and never even shot his rifle. He believes survivor’s guilt and the fact that the men returned home to a country that did not welcome them has left many men unable to talk about their experiences in Vietnam. According to Cavazos’ wife, the experience changed him. When he left he was a bit self-centered and selfish. But after his experiences in Vietnam he came home much more sensitive. He thinks many soldiers had the same reaction but cannot put it into words.

The emotion of War Vietnam veteran Jose “Wally” Cavazos used some of his time in Vietnam to write poetry. But it’s not the kind of poetry that lifts the spirit of the reader. Rather it reveals the terror of war and the struggles a soldier feels as he faces an unknown enemy. His poetry emerges from the scenes he witnessed first hand while serving in Vietnam. Here is one of his poignant poems that reveals deep-seated emotions many war survivors feel.

Written after witnessing an actual event at An Hoa. The battalion photographer and I were walking along the perimeter of our base camp in Da Nang, when we saw a dove settle on a concrete wire. Behind the dove was one of our bunkers with the barrel of a large machinegun directly behind it. I urged the photographer to get a picture of it. He failed to get a good

There was a stillness unfamiliar, Dark hung heavily that night. When I felt a presence in the bunker An omen in the fading light. In the last shadows of the evening In the dimness it appeared, A tender omen, a bird of peace, To quietly soothe our fears.

From pg. 19 Explosions crisp and clear, And as the body count went up some more, I felt a presence all too near. Screaming, cursing, moaning, crying,

WINTER TEXAN TIMES As the thunderous impacts shook the floor, And as all about me, men lay dying, I felt a presence skip by the door. In desperation I fired one round, And then I fired another. There was a scream of pain so near

www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com And from a home, another of sorrow. ‘Dear Lord’, I yelled with pounding heart, Is that the fires of Hell I see? Is my life so full of sin? Is It Satan that has found me? I have a metal jacket for my body,

And a steel helmet for my head. Yet what will shield my tender soul, From thy calling of the dead.

Bright terror now surrounds me, There is no peace for men or mind. Can I leave this terrible nightmare? To a place called home where peace I’ll find. In a thunderous blast there came my answer, And in a brilliant flash a voice did say, “My son no more will you endure tomorrows, For I will take you home today.”

MMA to hold Veterans Day Parade

HARLINGEN, Texas — Marine Military Academy will host its Veterans Day Parade Friday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. on the MMA Parade Ground. Veterans from all military branches are encouraged to attend, as they will be honored at this occasion and asked to join the MMA superintendent for the pass in review. Nearly 100 veterans were honored at last year’s parade. The public is not only welcome but encouraged to attend this event and pay respect to the nation’s local heroes. All parade-goers are encouraged to participate in the flag retirement ceremony to follow the parade. MMA’s battalion-size parades are al-

ways held in front of the historic Iwo Jima Monument, a symbol of American pride for veterans and civilians alike. Although bleacher seating is available, parade-goers may bring lawn chairs. MMA is located at 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., off Loop 499 and next to Valley International Airport in Harlingen. For more information on the Veterans Day Parade, call (956) 421-9225. Marine Military Academy is a college-preparatory boarding school for young men in grades 8-12 with an optional post-graduate year. Since 1965, MMA is the only private school in the world based on the traditions and values of the U.S. Marine Corps. Located in Harlingen,

Xtreme Bugs invade IMAS

A new exhibit that started October 8 and will run through March 20 asks the question, “What if the ant crawling on your counter, the spider in the doorway, or the butterfly in your garden was the size of your car?” This new exhibition questions the physical characteristics you would notice and behaviors you would observe. This is a 6000-square-foot exhibit features over100 giant bugs, including 22 massive animatronic bugs in vibrant

natural habitats. Learn about super organisms, insect migration and hibernation, and solitary predators with hissing cockroaches, a tarantula, a fluttering Monarch butterfly, a ladybug and a line of marching ants and more. Sounds like a great place to take visiting grandchildren. Admission to IMAS is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 4 to 12. This Xtreme Bugs exhibit has an additional $8 fee with no re-entries.

U.S. Army Camel Corps started in Texas By Kathy Olivarez One of the most unique experiments conducted by the United States Army in the 1800s began in Texas and spread across the Southwestern United States. It was the use of imported camels to transport goods across the desert areas of western Texas and the southwest where long distances between water sources, mountains and impassible rivers proved to be almost insurmountable for men and horses. In 1836, Army Lt. George H. Crosman came up with the idea of using camels and made a list of ways he felt camels

might be of assistance to the army and sent it to Washington. Camels could carry seven to nine hundred pounds each and travel for 30 to 40 miles a day for many days in succession. They can go without water and with little food for six to eight days, and they are suited for travel in grass or sandy plains and do not require shoeing. At the time his report was virtually ignored. In 1847, Crosman, now a major, met Maj. Henry C. Wayne, another camel enthusiast, who wrote a letter to Congress suggesting importation of camels. The letter caught the attention of Mis-

sissippi Senator Jefferson Davis, who thought the idea was worthy of attention. But it was not until 1853 when Davis was appointed Secretary of State, that funding for the project was appropriated. In March of 1855, a sum of $30,000 was set aside for importation of camels. Wayne was appointed to head the expedition and the USS Supply, a naval ship, was outfitted to be “a camel car” with hoists and slings to load and transport the camels. Camels were purchased in Goleta, Malta, Greece, Turkey and Egypt. Wayne and others went to Crimea to learn from the British about their experiences using camels during the Crimean War. A total of 33 animals were purchased. Nineteen were female and 14 were male. There were two Bactrian (two-humped camels), which are known for strength and burden carrying abilities. Some of the camels were dromedaries (one-humped), which are known for swiftness. There were also Arabian, Tunis, and Tulli or booghee camels. They cost an average of $250 each. The voyage home began on February 15, 1856 and the cargo was unloaded on May 14, 1856 in Indianola, Texas. After resting and time for acclimatizing, the camels were driven to San Antonio. Later they were moved to Camp Verde where a camel corral like those in Egypt was built. A second expedition was sent to purchase more camels, returning in 1857 with 41 more camels. To satisfy Davis’ concerns about military usefulness Wayne did a field test by sending three wagons with six-mule teams and six camels to San Antonio for a supply of oats. The mule-drawn wagons loaded with 1800 pounds of oats took five days for the return trip, while the camels carried 3648 pound of oats and made the trip in two days. Training the camels was no small task. While normally docile, camels, when irritated, were known to spit foul-smelling cud at their trainers. An angry camel was capable of kicking, biting or stomping an

antagonist to death. It was hard for men to get used to their smell and horses were often frightened by it. Still the experiment persisted and proved successful. Congress authorized building a road to help link eastern territories to those in the far west. The wagon road was built along the 35th parallel from Fort Defiance in New Mexico Territory to the Colorado River on the California/Arizona border. The contract was won by Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a brigadier in the California militia. Beale was ordered to take 25 camels with him on the surveying expedition. Each camel carried a 600-pound pack. Although initially opposed to using the camels, in the end Beale found them to be quite useful. When his expedition got lost in a canyon, a scouting party set out on camels to search for a trail. The camels found a river 20 miles away and led the expedition to it, saving the lives of men and beasts. After that, camels were used to find all watering holes. The camels again proved themselves invaluable when another expedition got lost in the Mojave Desert. It was the camels that led the survivors to safety. After the expedition to survey the road was completed, the camels were supposed to be returned to Camp Verde but Beale instead kept them at Fort Tejon, 100 miles north of Los Angeles. While there, a Mojave Indian raid occurred. Citizens took the camels to chase the Indians away. This was the camels’ only combat situation. The coming of the Civil War halted the camel experiment. Camels captured from former army forts in Texas were used to carry salt from La Sal del Rey in South Texas to the Mexican border to be loaded on ships and sold in Europe by the Confederate Army. And that’s the Rio Grande Valley connection to the camel experiment by the U.S. Army in the 1800s.

Visitors enjoy Texas Butterfly Festival

The 2016 Texas Butterfly Festival held last weekend was a great success, reports Marianna Trevino-Wright, director of the National Butterfly Center in Mission where the annual festival was held. This year’s festival had 158 registrants from 22 states. Participants recorded sighting 113 species of butterflies from three days of field trips across the Rio Grande Valley. That is the greatest number of registrants in four years, since the National Butterfly Center assumed responsibility for organizing and operating the festival on behalf of the City of Mission. The butterfly count was slightly down from last year due to record-breaking summer heat with little rainfall. This resulted in less-than-optimal butterfly habitat that was dry, in many places, with no nectar in bloom and scorched host plants. But sites such as the National Butterfly Center, Bentsen Palm RV Resort and the butterfly-friendly wall around the Retama Village subdivision, along with private gardens in Mission, maintained important habitat for the butterflies, producing the majority of all species seen on any given day.

Especially noteworthy this year was the butterfly habitat at Falcon State Park, which guides and repeat visitors stated looked “better than it’s ever been!” thanks to attention from park staff and summer rainfall. Wright said, “Especially disappointing this year were the number of butterfly collectors present during the peak of butterfly season. Mission has an ordinance protecting butterflies on public lands, including rights of way; however, no other municipalities do. For this reason, collectors were encountered in places such as the irrigation district canal bank at Rio Rico Road, where they reportedly caught and took all of the female Walker’s Metalmarks for captive breeding and private collections. This butterfly is a Lower Rio Grande Valley Specialty – one that visitors travel here to see – and the population was wiped out before the end of the festival.” Wright said visitors were rewarded with uncommon butterflies such as the Double-dotted Skipper, Pale-banded Crescent, Mexican Fritillary and the Marius Hairstreak, which were seen in some quantity. “Guests enjoyed camaraderie

Finally, the North American Butterfly Photo Contest winner was announced: Julie Shaw, of Austin, with Juniper Hairstreak on Milkweed. She will receive a check for $500 for her
