RC Races take off at Alamo Palms
By Henry Miller ALAMO—From the parking lot you could hear track announcer Terry Freeman call the cars to the starting line. The smell of grilled burgers was in the air and a packed house waiting in anticipation for the first race to begin. “Whoa, whoa, you can’t get a head start,” he announced as the cars and their “drivers” prepped for the event’s version of the green flag. Eight remote control hot rods lined up on the 1/8-mile dirt track at Alamo Palms RV Resort for the grand opening of the “Try Out Traxxas” event. More than 200 people attended the event, taking turns at racing the cars on the winding road-style course, complete with jumps, double jumps and hair-pin turns. “This idea floated around
The Pharr Community Theater will present the children’s/family play “Peter & Wendy” by Jeremy Bloom. In this lyrical, atmospheric interpretation of Peter Pan, Jeremy Bloom strips the familiar story down to its emotional essence. Peter lures Wendy away from her nursery to the magical world of Neverland, where she joins his adventures with Tinker Bell, Tiger Lily, and the menacing Captain Hook. A low-tech, inventive adaptation that pays homage to the darker themes of J. M. Barrie’s original, Peter/Wendy will mesmerize audiences of all ages. In the role of Peter Pan, 18-year-old Briana Cruz from La Feria says a friend See Peter & Wendy pg. 23

In addition, the zoo will be aglow with about 150 lighted animal and holiday themed decorative figures located throughout the zoo. the track for two years or so but funding has been always an issue. Then some people decided it was something to do and put in some money and about five or six of us did most of the work in the middle of May and finished up about two to three weeks ago.” said Freeman, who helped coordinate the building of the track and the event. “We had the track ready when everyone got here and decided to have an open house. This was an excellent response.” New Sun Racing, with five stores across the Rio Grande Valley including Valle Vista Mall in Harlingen and La Plaza Mall in McAllen, brought a table of remote control cars, trucks, drones and other accessories. They also provided the park with 20 cars, remotes and batteries to race, wreck and wreak havoc on the course, complete with an announcer/RC driver press box and See RC Racers pg. 4
70-year-old WT makes 400-mile pilgrimage By Kathy Olivarez Dr. Charles “Chuck” Proesel DDS, a master dentist from Gridley, IL., who spends his winters at Bentsen Grove RV Park in Mission, has just completed walking the trail of St. Francis of Assisi, the same trail walked during Biblical times, to the location where St. James the Apostle’s bones are located. Proesel started his career as dentist assigned to the USS Coral Sea, CVA-43 in the early 1970s while the Vietnam War was raging on land. He spent two years doing routine dental work while the senior dentist took the trauma cases that were brought to the ship. Afterwards, he returned home to Illinois where he worked his way up to Master Dentist, of which there are only 2000, of the 160,000 dentists practicing in the U.S. today. He was active in the American Dental Association (ADA) at the state and national levels during his career and served 15 years on Illinois’ Review Committee and
on the Illinois State Charitable Foundation. He was a member of the House of Delegates for Illinois’ state dental association. At the national level he participated in ADA meetings that made policies on issues such as how much fluoride was safe for children to have in their treatments. But now that he has almost retired, he has turned his attention to other interests. The interest in making the walk was sparked when he took a Cursillo or a mini course in Christianity. The concept had its beginning after World War II as a way to get veterans of WWII back in church. While it started in the Catholic Church it has also been used by Lutherans and Methodists who call it “The Walk to Emmaus.” During his Crusillo, Proesel learned about the walk Camino de Santiago, the trail taken by St. Francis of Assisi to Santiago de Compostela, Spain where today the bones of St. James are held in a gold box See Pilgrimage pg. 3

From inside the cathedral. St. Francis started his journey in Italy but many pilgrims start in St. Jean Pied de Port, France where Proesel started. The trail from that location is called Camino de Santiago. He found that some of the Europeans he met on the trip walked across Europe as well. Proesel said those who make the walk are granted an indulgence from the Catholic Church. Indulgences help people get out of purgatory and into heaven quicker he explained. The walk was 788 kilometers (490 miles) long and took him five and a half weeks to complete. The terrain varied from rough, requiring him to climb several of the Pyrenees Mountains, to gentler trails leading through a number of villages. Proesel found the first day crossing one of the mountains was the most grueling. He had to climb from 400 feet above sea level to about 5000 feet above sea level and then go back down to 700 feet above sea level. It was a 28-kilometer hike (about 17.4 miles) that took one day. “There are areas where the path is rocky and watching your step is crucial,” said Proesel. “There is a movie called ‘The Way’ I saw during my Crusillo starring Martin Sheen and directed by Emilio Estevez where Emilio, who plays the son, is killed on the first day of the walk because that is the most treacherous part of Camino De Santiago,” added Chuck.
pg. 1 “The weather is often foggy and it can snow. It snowed a bit the morning I left but it wore off quickly. But that is not always the case. Recently a couple from France got lost due to heavy fog on the trail and were lost on the mountain for five days before finding their way out,” he added. “That was by far the toughest part of the walk. I was so tired I only walked three hours before stopping the next day. The good thing about the walk is that each pilgrim can walk at his or her own pace. There are many villages along the route that have hostels where pilgrims spend the nights. Bunks are provided and meals can be purchased at the hostel or in the cafés along the route. Some days the route took him along green hills with mountains in the background. Other days he walked along the paths that cattle, sheep and goats used going to mountain pastures. There were vineyards and farm fields along the route to see. And there were many villages along the way to sightsee or eat lunch. One day he passed a sculpture garden where an artist was displaying his works. In one village he saw a woman with a horse drinking from the fountain in the center of the square. The water coming out of the top was pure enough for humans to drink while the horse enjoyed the water that accumulated at the bottom of the fountain. Another day he came to a cave where a couple gave water and food for donations instead of asking a specific price for the
WINTER TEXAN TIMES I NOVEMBER 23, 2016 03 items. There was no charge for to those who had no money. Another time he met a group of seven Spanish men who had known each other since elementary school who were hiking the trail together, singing as they traveled. He had a fellow pilgrim take his picture at a statue of a pilgrim located along the trail. There is a special iron cross called Cruz de Ferro located at one point on the trail where pilgrims take rocks from where they live and add them to the pile already at the bottom of the cross. The mound around the cross is about 30 feet high now. Before he left, one of Proesel’s patients who knew he was going, called him and asked if he would take something special with him to leave on the cross. A friend of hers had a son named Andrew, who made the walk four years ago and found it to be very meaningful. Andrew died in January of a brain tumor. His mother wanted Chuck to take a medal with Andrew’s name on it and put in on the cross. Chuck wore the medal around his neck until he arrived at the cross. Then a fellow pilgrim used Chuck’s telephone and recorded him climbing the mound and hanging the medal on the cross so Andrew’s mother could see it. Chuck often ate lunch in small restaurants and if calamari was on the menu, he ordered it because it is one of his favorite foods. He carried a backpack with his clothes, a sleeping bag in case the hostel had no linens, first aid supplies, two bottles of water and snacks to eat along the way. He took pictures with the camera on his phone.
He took most of his meals in the hostels where three course meals were served starting with soup followed by rice or pasta and a stew. One of the best things Proesel found about walking the trail was the chance to meet people from all over the world. He traveled alone since his wife was unable to make the trip. He met a couple from Vancouver and walked with them the last three weeks. Along the way me met pilgrims who made the trip three or four times. He even met a man who had walked the trail over 60 times and was writing a book about his experiences. He showed a picture of people around a dining table at one of the hostels and said they were from Vancouver, Germany, Italy, Denver, Salt Lake City and Steamboat Springs. At the end of the pilgrimage Proesel had a lot of satisfaction at having completed it. He never felt threatened in any way along the trail, and felt there was a spiritual presence along the trail caring for the pilgrims. Chuck celebrated his 70th birthday on the trail and was proud that at his age he was able to complete the entire distance of around 490 miles. It was a very meaningful experience for him. He finished his pilgrimage on October 25 and by October 29, he was back in Illinois and headed toward his winter home at Bentsen Grove RV Park in Mission with plenty of adventures to share with his winter friends.

From pg. 1 bleachers. “We play every chance we get now,” Freeman said. “This caught on pretty fast. We expect to have 50 to 100 car owners by the end of the season.” At least two other parks – Victoria Palms and Alamo Rec – also have tracks and the three, along with any others that are interested, will be forming a racing series. “I don’t think we’ve ever raced a single car in our lives,” Freeman said. “But when they came up to us from New Sun Racing we said ‘hey, this sounds like a lot of fun. Let’s do it.’” Freeman said that he felt that the activities were getting a little stagnant. He said also that it was time to start adding some interesting things to attract more Winter Texans to the Valley. If Thursday’s showing was any predictor, the plan may have its dividends. It already has in terms of local interest. “A lot of people are getting into it,” said Faisal Saleem, sales manager and partner of New Sun Racing. “We started going to visit the Winter Texan Parks last year and the interest was incredible. We really didn’t expect it to turn out like this but once they see these cars going 55-60 miles per hour, and then to see the drones racing,
they really want to do it.” The cars were modified to run closer to 30 miles per hour for this event. Alamo Palms is also working on a drag racing track and what they are calling a “bash track,” set up to jump off ramps and run over rocks and other obstacles. “Those are winter projects,” Freeman said, referring to the other two tracks under construction. “The bashing track is where they can run over stuff like rocks or jump over bridges – like what a lot of the off road Jeeps so. We hope to have a little of everything when the season is over.” “We were just looking for some things that would be entertaining and these guys came and showed us what those cars could do,” Freeman added. “Most of us have never done this but it is catching on. Saleem said it’s not only catching on with Winter Texans, but all across the country – especially in the Rio Grande Valley. “It seems like everyone is wanting to be a part of this,” he said. “They come in asking for cars to look a certain way or they want to see the things these cars can do. It’s a lot of fun.” For information on the racing at Alamo Palms or any of the Encore RGV Parks, call (956) 787-7571. Attention Seniors and Baby Boomers Back By Request…
• Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop Reveals • How To Prevent Falls And Improve Your Balance Have you fallen in the past? Are you afraid of falling? Has your balance become more unsteady? Has your walking become more difficult? Have you started using a cane or walker recently? (Or have been told to…but are resisting?) If you have answered yes to any of these questions (or have a stubborn spouse or parent who is in denial) – The Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop may be a life changing (abd possibly life saving) event for you. Hello, As you get older your balance naturally begins to get worse. I see this every day and it can completely ruin your quality of life. • You start to hold on to furniture when you walk • You start to walk slower and constantly look at the floor • You avoid going out of the house whenever possible • You become more reliant on family members, often making you feel guilty about being a burden • You are no longer able to enjoy life (go out with family/friends, take vacation, etc.) And the more you avoid doing these things the more fearful you become that you will fall. This can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Plus, the more you avoid moving..the more likely you are to experience depression, increased stress, muscle weakness, difficulty walking..and a host of other medical issues. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, our Balance and Fall Prevention specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in the neighborhood improve their balance and get back to doing the things they love.. it’s what we do. So by request, We are hosting a Balance and Fall Prevention Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy 6100 N. 10th St., Ste. G McAllen, Tx 78504 at 10 AM on

Big Daddy’s is the place for wonderful burgers!
Just think about those BIG, JUICY hamburgers made from fresh, never frozen, ground meat, topped with a whole arsenal of delicious toppings and seasonings to delight your taste buds and definitely satisfy your tummy. Big Daddy’s Burgers is the best place to go for that “gourmet burger experience” without paying an arm and a leg for top quality. Each burger has at least a three-quarter pound patty of fresh meat. You are not going to go home hungry! Some selections even offer two or three patties of meat for those with a big appetite. For those with a smaller appetite, the Lil’ Daddy Burger has one patty. If you’re good and hungry, the Daddy Jr. Burger has two patties and the Big Daddy has three patties. They are served with big, thick French fries.
They also come in all sorts of flavors, – some quite unusual. There is the Frito Pie Burger covered with chili con carne, or the chori-queso burger with cheese and chorizo. Look for the Mexican Burger with cheddar cheese and avocado. Try the Swiss Burger with mushrooms, and Swiss cheese or try a Bacon Mushroom Burger. If you like things spicy, go for the firecracker burger covered in hot Cheetos for a fiery tasting burger. Want something different? Big Daddy offers an awesome Philly Steak Sandwich made with shredded rib eye meat. Or go for Da Chicken Burger made with juicy tender chicken breast. For extra sides, there are all flavors of chicken wings; some with barbecue sauces, garlic, and Parmesan to name a few. Their customers’ favorite starters are the stuffed

Oscar selected the Mexican Burger, which he said was juicy and delicious, a definite cut above those frozen hamburger patties found in fast food restaurants. I ordered a chicken salad, made for those with smaller appetites. It was made with iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, croutons, and delicious strips of fresh, never frozen, chicken breasts. It was very fresh and it was obvious the chicken was freshly prepared. Big Daddy’s has two locations. One is at 5818 N. Cage Blvd. in Pharr. Exit SH 281 on the Nolana exit and the restaurant is just past the AEP building. In McAllen they are located at 100 S. Bicentennial Blvd.

Edinburg Chamber says, ‘Welcomes Back’
Winter Texans from all parks in Edinburg took part in the annual Edinburg Welcome Back & Expo held Thursday, Nov. 17. The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce greeted returning Winter Texans with margaritas as they walked in the door. They also served a meal consisting of a barbecue sandwich, potato chips and a large “Welcome Back” cake! Residents of several parks came and claimed tables as they enjoyed the music and activities planned by the chamber. Parks represented included Wriggley’s RV on Monte Cristo, Citrus Mobile Park, Green Acres, Orange Grove, Texas Trails, Lazy Palms, Enchanted Valley and others. Folks attending came from Canada, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin and, of course, Texas. Keys and Strings provided the music that ranged from western to oldies to rock ‘n roll. The music gave guests a chance to dance, and many did just that. Or they could sit and talk because as one man put it, “the music is not so loud so we could

not hear each other talk”...a definite positive in his opinion. Folks did a bit of walking, line dancing, twisting and boot scootin’! The variety of music included songs like “Blue Ain’t Your Color”, “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”, “Let’s Do the Twist”, “All My Exes Live in Texas”, “Dinkin’ Champaign” and many other Winter Texan favorites. Door prizes were given out and included a number of bottles of wine. Bill Bell’s wife picked a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon for him when his number was called. When asked him if he was going to share it with the people at this table, he said, “If they get there fast enough!” One of his neighbors said they would be there to help him drink it whether he liked it or not. John Emrich received a bottle of Malbec from Argentina that he said was one of the best dry wines in the world. Other, such as John Wulf selected buffet tickets to Mr. Gatti’s. Regardless of whether the Winter Texans present were dancing or whether or

told her about the open auditions and within a couple of hours she drove to Pharr and landed the lead role. “Peter Pan is like the symbol of eternal youth where he never grows up and everything is like a game to him, taking other kids with him to Neverland so they can also stay young. The rest of the cast is really devoted; we’re all doing a really good job. It’s just a fun play to be a part of and to watch.” Fourteen-year-old Rosario Garcia from Edinburg plays Wendy. “She’s a young girl who does not want to grow up and at first is skeptical about going to Neverland, but in the end she loves it. In order to get into the role
I’ve watched the movie several times and I practice my lines everyday with my brother and sisters who also have parts in the play. It’s a great show and we’ve been practicing for a long time and I think it’s going to be awesome.” The oldest in the cast is Adan Rodriguez from Pharr and he plays Mr. Darling and Captain Hook. “Hook is the main Pirate whose always after Peter Pan. I guess he’s mad because Peter Pan does not grow up and that kinda aggravates him. I’m having a marvelous time and the cast is awesome and we all get along fine. We want to have fun and of course stay young, as young as we can.” (He laughs) “Come and see
Peter and Wendy, at the Pharr Community Theater, an adventure that you’ll never forget,” added Rodriguez. Juan Guerra, from Edinburg, is a retired fine arts teacher from La Joya and is directing the production. “It explores innocence and friendship within children and family, how the parents care for their kids and how they want to be with them all the time. We have 12 to 15 cast members. I tell them to live the character, to feel it from inside and to believe they are actually Peter and Wendy and the Lost Boys and to be successful in truly becoming these characters. Children’s theater is very important in the Valley, some of my cast members have performed in plays in schools and at talent shows and others have not. This is an opportunity for them to learn how to
become an actor. The Pharr Community Theater also offers after school programs where some of these kids are taking classes, in the arts, and learning about theater and everything that encompasses what an actor does.” Showtimes for Peter & Wendy are: Nov. 17-19 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults and free for children. The play will be performed at the Elva and Kieth Michal’s Performing Arts Building at 213 W. Newcombe Ave., Pharr. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door starting one hour before showtime upon availability. Seating is limited to 50 persons per show. For more information call 956-6009463 or 956-293-9468 or 956-207-7201.

The Christmas season will arrive in a big way when McAllen kicks of their holiday celebration with the largest illuminated and helium balloon parade in South Texas. The theme of the parade is “Entertainment on Parade.” It will feature over 50 illuminated floats, 36 helium balloons and 13 marching bands. Inside the McAllen Veterans Memorial
Stadium the Texas A&M Fighting Aggie Band will kick off the parade with a performance prior to the start of the parade. The band is known for its precision military marching formations and with over 400 members, it is the largest military band in the nation. Food donations urgently needed for Mission Food Pantry
Thanksgiving is coming, children will be out of school for the week, and the shelves are bare at the Mission Food Pantry. And the Christmas holidays will be coming soon. “The demand for food always increases when the schools close,” said Food Pantry Manager Adela Ortega. “Winter Texans who are very generous are known for helping keep food staples on the shelves at the food pantry but they have been gone over the summer and the Mission Food Pantry is in desperate need of new supplies,” added Ortega. Ortega said items most needed are canned vegetables, such as green beans, corn and peas; canned meats, like tuna or
chicken; along with rice, beans and macaroni. The older residents also need oatmeal and canned or powdered milk. “We are low on everything,” lamented Ortega. Unlike other food banks with repeat clients, the Mission Food Bank is set up to serve people with emergency food needs created by job loss, illness, being on food stamp waiting lists, fires, and other tragedies. “Monetary donations are always welcome,” said Ortega. The food pantry is located at 115 S. Mayberry in Mission. Individuals or parks can make donations. For more information, call Ortega at (956) 458-9066.
