Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 30, No. 7 © 2016-2017 Brownsville’s Holiday Village: ‘I Like It!’
By Kathy Olivarez “I like it,” shouted my exuberant twoyear-old great grandson, Jordon, when we pulled into a parking space in front of one of the brightly lit little cottages in the Brownsville Holiday Village. “I like it,” he repeated Jordon was already ready for something special because we rode in the car for over an hour to get there, singing Christmas songs as we made the drive to get in the spirit. After a quick stop for pizza so no one would starve (and throw tantrums) we got to the park. As it was a holiday weekend, the park was teeming with little children, all of whom clearly “liked it.” As soon as Jordon was out of his car seat, he was running toward the little house with his father in rapid pursuit. His eyes were filled with stars as he ran and climbed up on the step, put his hand above his eyes and peered in at the lights and decorations. He turned and gave a big smile. “I like it!” he stated once more. Then just as suddenly, he was down and running toward the yellow school bus next door, shouting “I like it.” So it was as we made our way down the line of little houses. Alamo Rec-Veh Park brings innovation to WT activities
Russ Saenz and Jim Davis (background) lock in on their targets during some leisure shooting time at “The Range,” a 10-meter shooting range for .177 caliber air guns at Alamo Recreational Vehicle Park.
By Henry Miller ALAMO—Jim Davis peered through his rifle scope and fired. Then he walked up to his target, a joker from a deck of cards, and showed what he did. “I missed it by a little,” he said. But wait, go back – the card he shot wasn’t facing him like a target. The card was turned 90 degrees so the paper thin side was what was facing him. He shot through the thin side, almost splitting the card with that shot. This wasn’t during a major rifle competition. This was at the Alamo Rec-Veh Park, located at 1320 W. Frontage Rd., Alamo. Davis was using a .177 caliber pellet rifle at the shooting range created on site just four years earlier. To put it in context, the .177 caliber and the target 10 meters away are the same caliber and distance that was used in the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. 19-year-old Ginny Thrasher won that event – the first gold medalist winner for the USA in the Rio Olympics. This may not seem like a contemporary setting or follow the stereotypes of what people believe goes on in Winter Texan parks. But this clearly isn’t your normal Winter Texan park. The Doughnut Makers By Henry Miller MISSION – Every other Wednesday, as early as 6 a.m., a wonderful aroma begins to creep out from the main hall at Bentsen Grove Resort. Inside, David Johnson and Gary Grant are fast at work preparing up to 60 dozen of delicious, fresh and hot doughnuts for residents – and visitors – who start their morning with one (or more) of these delicacies and some piping hot coffee. Grant said when the operation gets into full swing, they’ll be reaching up to 100 dozen every other Wednesday. For Johnson it brings back memories of the “glory days” of doughnuts. He used to work in his mother’s doughnut shop, the Kilburn Avenue Doughnut Shop, while he was a teen. It was the 1960s and they used to make 1,200 dozen doughnuts a day with See Doughnut Makers pg. 3

But for now, 40 dozen is good – until more Winter Texans return of course. Johnson met Grant, also from Illinois, about 3 ½ years ago in the park and they became good friends. The wives also met and now they spend time hanging out, sometimes having to bear the burden of eating the final few doughnuts on that rare occasion that there are any left after things shut down
no doughnuts, another group is preparing biscuits and gravy. Grant is going on his eighth year making the doughnuts. He said at one point there was nobody available to do the long-standing tradition so he decided to volunteer. Of course, he’s a doughnut fan too. “I really like the blueberry ones with the vanilla icing,” said Grant, from Mattoon, Ill. “But actually I like them all.” The duo, who receive help from two others when more Winter visitors have made the trek to their Southern homes, will begin the full range of doughnuts – chocolate, vanilla, glazed, blueberry and more – beginning Wednesday. Dec. 10. It’s not only the residents who get to enjoy the hot, fresh delicacies, but other parks also get in on the fun – ordering dozens ahead of time to come pick up on those ear-

Pirate’s Landing Welcomes Winter Texans
One of the most popular places to dine while visiting Port Isabel is Pirate’s Landing, where Winter Texans are favored customers. Not only does the restaurant offer a variety of lunch specials but also there is bar open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with half price specials. There is a full line of wines, beers and mixed drinks to suit all tastes. Plus, Cactus Willie entertains Monday through Thursday and often the bar area overflows into the main dining room. During Winter Texan season, manager Dan Reeves offers half price specials during happy hour, including half price shrimp on Mondays, pulled pork sandwiches on Tuesdays, all appetizers half price on Wednesdays, bangers and mashed potatoes (English sausages with mashed potatoes) on Thursday, and half price oysters on Friday. For lunch there are a number of offerings including deep fried avocado filled with shrimp salad. Very good! Reeves recommends the South of the Border Taste of Shrimp Cerviche with boiled shrimp marinated in lime juice with avocado and pico de gallo. Also very good! For anyone with a gluten problem their crab cakes are gluten-free. For those who do not enjoy seafood, Reeves recommends chicken salad croissant with walnuts, or the chopped steak wrapped in bacon and served with a side of veggies and mashed potatoes. Then there are favorites such as Crab Louie, po’ boy sandwiches and burgers. For those who want a heavier meal, try ginger marinated salmon, bacon wrapped shrimp, and flounder or snapper dishes. Dessert comes in all flavors of cheesecakes or the signature molten chocolate cake with ice cream on top.
HAPPY HOUR EVERY DAY
The scenery is great because it is right on the water next to the Queen Isabella Causeway so visitors can watch the sea traffic as it comes and goes past the bank of large windows. It is a great place to enjoy the scenery, and kick back and relax with a great meal while listening to Cactus Willie.

Tour of San Antonio available
Have a yen to visit San Antonio while in the Rio Grande Valley but don’t want to drive in that traffic? Here’s the perfect tour. It was put together by activity directors at Bit O’ Heaven and Chimney Park last year for their residents. But when the tornado hit Chimney Park this summer several of the residents scheduled to go backed out because of expenses in repairing or replacing their units. As a result, there are about 20 spaces now available for this special chartered tour of San Antonio. The tour will take place Jan.7-10 and costs $497 per person, double occupancy. Full payment is due by Dec. 16. This almost all-inclusive tour
includes all costs except two lunches and personal purchases. Accommodations are at the Drury Inn Plaza located on the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is filled with unusual museums, shopping opportunities and great restaurants that cater to almost any kind of cuisine one might desire. Most restaurants have sidewalk cafes on the banks of the river where you can sit and enjoy watching the tour boats and tourists go by. The first stop on the tour is the famous Alamo. But this is not just any tour. It is a “guided moonlight tour” with a guide who is dressed in period costume. Those on the tour will get to see hidden places
www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com
not available to see on the daytime tours. See “Saga” the story of Texas created through slides and shown on the wall of a church next to the Alamo. It tells the story of Texas from its beginnings. Enjoy a wonderful meal at the top of the San Antonio Tower of the Americas. The 750-foot tower was the tallest tower in America when it was constructed for the 1968 World’s Fair. A few years ago, the restaurant and observation deck were given an $8 million renovation, providing a luxurious dining experience. The Tower’s revolving Chart House Restaurant offers some of San Antonio’s finest cuisine while giving patrons incredible panaoramic views of the city. Most meals take about an hour, which is just enough time to see all four quadrants of the city. Enjoy a stop at one of the missions and learn how the Franciscan Fathers brought Native Americans into the missions and taught them Christianity and agricultural practices so they could give up the life of “hunting and gathering” The bus will also make a stop at Trader’s Village, a large market that features a beautiful array of arts, crafts and wares from Mexico and the Southwest. There is plenty of time allowed for shopping and eating. While this is a guided tour, it has
been planned to be leisurely with lots of free time so everyone has time to enjoy shopping as well as the sights while there. Enjoy a dinner cruise on the San Antonio River on a specially outfitted boat that serves an elegant meal during the tour. There are some very interesting locations such as the tiny island referred to as “Wedding Island” and the building that is really just a wall. The trip offers many of the highlights of San Antonio. The bus will take people from place to place so those with limited walking ability can choose how much walking they want to do. San Antonio is considered to be one of the four most unique cities in the United States because of the heavy influence of the Mexican culture found there as it intertwines with the Anglo culture. Many may find San Antonio too intimidating to drive in because it is the seventh largest city in the United States. But with a tour like this one, there is absolutely no reason to miss seeing it while enjoying your winter in the Rio Grande Valley. To make a reservation call Susan at Bit O’ Heaven at (603) 396-2786, or Linda at Chimney Park at (956) 585-5061 right away to snap up one of the remaining reservations.
Dear Editor, Chimney Park RV Resort’s management and residents want to express their sincere thank you to the many local organizations and private parties who were so very generous in the difficult days following the tornado that almost destroyed our winter home. The many residents who returned to Chimney Park to help with the massive cleanup, worked so very hard in the heat with no electric and no water, and the gift of meals from others can never be thanked enough. When you come to Chimney Park now, signs of the destruction are gone. The park is beautiful with pretty landscaping, new homes, and smiles everywhere. The contributions of time and effort from the following organizations and individuals cannot be measured in any way. The Mission Police Department (for guarding the park, keeping everything safe and feeding us); Texas State Troopers (for guarding and patrolling the grounds); Mission Fire Depart-
ment (fast response and rescuing efforts); Border Patrol (for their constant presence, cutting down trees and help moving debris); City of Mission (all the extra effort in removing branches and trees and feeding us) local Lions Club (donated 40 cases of water, when we had none). Our good neighbor Johnny Hart (owner of the Riverside Club) who brought his equipment in to help in many ways. James Cardoza, Mission Emergency Management Coordinator, who was always available to help us with many situations. Chimney Park RV Resort with its historical chimney and the Rio Grande River remains one of premier parks in the Rio Grande Valley. It is truly a “one of its kind” in location and setting and most of all “one of a kind” in its fortitude and spirit. So, come join us for one of our public events and experience that “one of a kind spirit.” The Management and Staff Chimney Park RV Resort, Mission TX

David Langseth, a Wisconsin native, has been at the park for five years and has been a part of many of the projects that are now providing the park’s residents more enjoyable activities to enjoy than ever before. Park members from all over the Valley have been striding in to see the range, the tracks, the lake and everything else the park has done in recent years. Langseth said it all started with David Nickum, a resident who thought it would be fun for others to have a place they could shoot air rifles. The park owner at first let them use half of his maintenance shed – it didn’t take long before he offered up the other half as interest boomed. “We would have people waiting in line to take turns,” Langseth said. “We’ve had as many as 45 people become members and actively shoot at the range.” Several competitions take place at the range, affectionately called “The Range.” There are head-to-head competitions, handicap shoot-offs and another where one shoots at their target whenever they would like within a certain time frame and places See Alamo Rec-Veh Park pg. 30
Jim Davis shows off a card he shot a pellet through, almost splitting the card in two, while the card’s paper thin side was facing him. Davis is a competitive shooter, has been ranked nationally, and can be found quite often at Alamo Rec’s shooting range.

brother, Jaydon, 4, were among a throng of children moving up and down the row looking at the little cottages. Warning! When taking visiting grandchildren, it’s also good to have one adult per child to keep up with them as two of them may suddenly strike off in different directions. The older children’s questions were a little more discerning. “What it this one? Oh, it’s a library!” “Look, this one is a school.” “There’s a church! The people are praying.” “What is Santa doing with that boat?”
referring to Santa’s Hunting Lodge. “Look! Those kids are decorating a Christmas tree.” “This one is a store. There are bananas for sale.” “What are those guys doing?” referring to the cottage where the elves were keeping track of Santa’s expenses. “Look at that giant cupcake in the Sweet Shop.” Jordon echoed with “I want it!” And from a child in the crowd looking at the display set up by the Brownsville dentists, “That little girl is wearing braces!” It was a night of joyous chaos with children having a great time looking at the magical little cottages in the park. They

knew that meant Christmas was coming. Looking at the display through a child’s eyes brings an extra bit of joy. The village is lighted from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. weeknights and 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. weekends. Dean Porter Park opens at 8 a.m. each morning so those who do not want to drive at night can still see the cottages on display. They simply will not enjoy the full effect of the lighting too. For evening viewing to avoid the massive throngs of children, try a weeknight when children have to be in school the next day. The cottages are a delight and are sure to bring out the child in each of us, no matter how old we are! “I like it!”

Tickets may be purchased at the historic gates to the mansion, if still available. For more information contact Quinta Mazatlan at (956) 6813370.

it in a binder to be scored and recorded. On Wednesdays there are “fun shoots” where everybody who is shooting, passes their gun to the next person, giving others a chance to shoot maybe a rifle they wouldn’t spend the amount of money it costs to obtain such a rifle. Davis is a competitive shooter, at one point ranked in the top five in the nation for his category. Alamos Rec has plenty of experts who are leading the charge when it comes to the new wave of events at the park. Doug Corbin owned two tracks in Wisconsin and played a major role in the construction of the RC tracks at the park. The circle track is one-third mile. There’s also an off-road track that is currently undergoing an extension. They also plan on having a carpet track ready to race on early next year. Corbin, like Langseth, can be seen also at the eight-acre lake, used for fishing and remote control races. Langseth said that while most of the RC speedboats hover in the 45 miles per hour range, Corbin takes the cake when it comes to speed and his boat that will eclipse 65 miles per hour. Langseth will spend more time racing his Laser Sailboat on the lake, enjoying the challenge of capturing the wind and using it to race the 40-inch single mast boat – the same one people will see on the massive lake inside Central Park in New York City. There’s also quad copter races, fishing tournaments (the largest largemouth bass pulled out of the lake was 6 pounds and 22 inches long), and minnow races with, yes, actual minnows. “That was my idea,” Langseth said. “But all this vision comes down to Doug (Corbin) and Mike Benoit. Mike is the engineer with

equipment and experience. There is so much talent in this park.” As impressive and trend-setting as it sounds, what may even be more impressive is that all this has been done since 2011. “Mike’s always saying that he wants to get all of this done as soon as possible,” Langseth joked. “That way when we’re in our 70s we can all enjoy it.”
Doug Corbin navigates his remote control truck around the oval track at Alamo Rec Veh Park. Corbin used to own two tracks, has plenty of experience in all aspects of remote control racing and can also be seeing running his RC boats on the park’s 8-acre lake.

It’s basically mixing the flour and water to a perfect consistency on a beater, let it sit and rise on racks, fry them (about a minute for each side) and then letting them cool. Then, after they are cooled, it’s time to put the cinnamon, or the glaze, or whatever on them. “These are some awful good doughnuts,” said Pete Brenner, who enjoys those

I don’t want to miss those mornings. “Every chance I get when I talk to people, I’m telling them about these doughnuts,” said Brenner, another Illinois native who moved to the Ozarks in Arkansas before coming to the Valley. “I think everybody should taste these and know where the best doughnuts are made.” To inquire about ordering doughnuts, call the Bentsen Grove Resort at (956) 5850703.
Fresh, hot doughnuts are being glazed by the dozen for both residents and visitors at Bentsen Grove Resort in Mission.
