Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 30 Year Anniversary Vol. 30, No. 8 © 2016-2017 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, December 15, 2016 Winter Texans share Christmas spirit

Citrus season is here!

We always look forward to citrus season here in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. All kinds of wonderful, delicious citrus are grown here including oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes and a variety of other citrus products. And the locals and Winter Texans alike know that Texas has the sweetest grapefruit and oranges on the planet. Earth Born Market, located at 4508 N. Taylor Road, McAllen not only sells delicious Valley citrus, but theirs is organically grown – free of pesticides and other harmful chemicals. And since they own the citrus groves and grow it locally, the prices are very reasonable, said Earth Born Market owner Russon Holbrook. Earth Born also offers a full range of organically and naturally grown fruits and vegetables and a variety of other healthy, yet delicious products. Emily Holbrook explained, “All fruit from our own farms is USDA Certified Organic. We also offer additional varieties that are not organic but are naturally grown from local farms.” The organic fruit and vegetables are proSee Citrus Season pg. 24 At left: Emily Holbrook displays a few of the popular citrus varieties available at Earth Born Market, including the Whittaker grapefruit, Rio Star grapefruit, Ruby Red grapefruit, Navel oranges, Marrs oranges and tangelos.

The holiday spirit is blanketing the Rio Grande Valley and Winter Texans are among those who enjoy the holiday most. But since they are away from their homes, Winter Texans enjoy helping those around them who are in need. Following is a small sample of some of the different ways the people wintering in the Rio Grande Valley are having a positive impact on the lives of the less fortunate in the Valley. Angels visit Alamo Museum

Bentsen Grove Resort rocks By Henry Miller

It’s Christmastime and angels just seem to go with the spirit of Christmas. The Alamo Museum recently opened a grand exhibit featuring hundreds of angels galore on display. There are small angels, large angels, clusters of angels, angels with moving wings, angels on lamps and even on buckets. The angels are from the private collection of Shirl Pfeiffer who collected them over a period of 30 years before donating the collection to the fledgling museum. MCALLEN - Bruce Watts likes rocks. He creates clocks, women’s pendants, bolos and more with the rocks he finds. His end results – transformed rocks – were on display at the Christmas Showcase Event at the McAllen Convention Center last weekend. “I just bumped into a guy who was an RVer and was next to me at Bentsen Grove,” Watts said. “He said ‘you should come see what we do’ and told me about this rock club. I thought ‘I like rocks – I don’t know anything about them but I like them.’ So I checked it out.” What he found was a group of 100 or more Winter Texans at Bentsen Grove RV Resort rock club who, like Watts, had a passion for rocks. Sunday’s show was the only

one he and his wife Diana have scheduled, but there is an open house coming up at Bentsen Grove from 1 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 10 for the public to check out the rock shop at the park. Watts was one of approximately 50 vendors at the Christmas Showcase, organized by Event Show Management. It’s the first time the show has been taken to McAllen and has become a major attraction the past 30 years in San Antonio. The attraction brought in people from all over the Valley. “They have some good stuff,” said Bob Charles, a Winter Texan who decided last year to stop the back-and-forth trek from his hometown in Springfield, Ill., and became a permanent resident. “I’m just here looking for some Christmas stuff, things for

the grandkids and things to put in their grab bags.” Charles was especially happy about some designer toothpick holders. “Yeah, you can never find one when you need one,” he said. “This will hopefully put an end to that.” Bruce Watts’ wife, Diana – a native Hawaiian – was perusing through the other vendors before heading back to the booth with her husband. “This is a good show,” she said. “We have a home in San Antonio and we travel back and forth.” Watts said the rock group meets once a week and they have had as many as 125 active members. You have to live in the park

Hidalgo Festival of Lights offers entertainment for all ages

Wham! Pow! Shazam! Watch out for those superheroes! As the presentation begins each superhero is introduced by Wonder Woman and honored for finally having captured the Joker, Batman’s nemesis, and put him in jail. Spiderman, Superman, Captain American and Batman all take their bows for this wonderful feat! Suddenly who should appear but the Joker himself, who has broken out of jail. He takes on each of the superheroes, defeating them in battle, then escapes out into the crowd proclaiming his intention to ruin the Festival of Lights! All children present are appointed deputies to keep a lookout for this sinister character who may be planning to pull the plug on the lights at the Hidalgo Festival of Lights. As the skit ends, Wonder Woman admonishes the children to be careful, and if they spot the Joker, report him to the police immediately! The young children present loved the skit and promised to be on the lookout for the Joker as they walked through the lighting displays and enjoyed carnival rides. Probably much more a favorite with the adults, Estudiantina Guadalupana Potosima returned for their annual appearances at the Hidalgo Festival of Lights. This prestigious singing group is composed of approximately 25 boys of junior high and high school age with excellent

singing voices. The group had its origin in 16th century Spain and the costumes the boys wear are replicas of a student’s clothing in the 16th century. While early members of the group were known for “song, merrymaking and pranks,” today it is an organization that produces a positive effect on the emotional, social and intellectual development of its members. Their concert on Saturday, Dec. 3, was a mixture of old, well-known Christmas songs and a number of other Christmas songs unfamiliar in the United States but popular in Mexico. Some of the songs, such as “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” sung in Spanish date back to the 14th century. Other familiar songs included “The First Noel” and “Oh Holy Night.” Some lively songs were on a fun level such as Feliz Navidad/I Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas!” On several of the lighter songs people in the audience were asked to dance and the boys selected ladies out of the front row as their partners. In addition to singing and dancing, the boys provided their own music. Several of the boys played the bandurria, which is a Spanish mandolin. Estudiantina Guadalupana is renown in Mexico, performing across the nation as well as the United States and other countries. For over half a century the group has produced many of Mexico’s top singers.

Dad is Always Looking For His Next Big Adventure

The superheroes show will continue this Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. other entertainment includes: Dec. 15 Valley View Folklorico and Mariachi Dec. 16 Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial Choir Dec. 18 Valley View Conjunto and Cachorritos Dec. 19 Creative Art Studio Dec. 20 Hidalgo High School Mariachi The annual Posada de Ramon Ayala

The festival’s lights will remain on in the city through December 31 so people can drive through the streets and enjoy the sights from their own vehicles, or park and stroll along the lighted streets.

Superheroes Captain America, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman perform a routine at the Hidalgo Festival of Lights stage in front of city hall. Other groups will perform nightly through December 20.

Razz-Ma-Tazz livens up Siesta Village

By Henry Miller WESLACO - Residents of the Siesta Retirement Village Park have been returning from up north a little earlier this year – and there have been several new residents. That’s good news for not only the park and the community but also for Gayle Mead, the park’s activities coordinator, who likes to see a good crowd at the events she puts on the calendar. She had no problem with that on Sunday as several residents – and visitors from neighboring parks – came early to see the McAllen Nikki Rowe High School show choir Razz-Ma-Tazz. One of eight performing choirs at Nikki Rowe, this group of about 20 students is the premiere mixed show choir at Nikki Rowe. They perform 30 or more times a year, singing, dancing and participating at times with the audience. Sunday, they showed why they are the best of the best. Barb Waitt is a resident at Pine to Palm Park, just down the road from Siesta. She, along with six friends arrived early for nearly front row seats to see the group perform. “I saw them last year,” she said. “And then I saw the flyer for the show here today and so we came to see it. It really is an enjoyable performance.”

Razz-Ma-Tazz sang a variety of traditional Christmas songs, with their own flair sometimes added in. On more than one occasion, singers would walk down the center of the audience, even serenading a visitor in a couple of instances. “I like to have things on the calendar early, to get the word out and to know there are activities going on in advance,” said Mead, a North Dakota native who has been at the Siesta Village since 2002. “Our residents love this group and they’ll be back for their spring show as well.” Stacey Gonzalez has been directing the performers for three years. She said she picks the music and keeps the audience in mind. This season, Razz-Ma-Tazz will perform 20 Christmas shows. Last season the group put on 34 shows in just 19 days. Gonzalez said she starts booking the group in March, months in advance. They began working on their choreography for the spring show earlier this week. Mead, the activities coordinator, said she just kind of “fell into” the activities position and clearly enjoys it. She has plenty of other performances already scheduled including a male quartet from Rio Hondo named “4 HIS Glory” performing on Saturday. Later she has the “Carpenters Once More” putting together a show. Led by Diana Lynn, “Carpen-

WE WILL SELL YOUR RV

ters Once More” pays tribute to vocalist and drummer Karen Carpenter whose hits with the group included We’ve Only Just Begun, Close To You and Please Mr. Postman, along with several others. “We have a few shows that come directly from Branson, Mo.” Mead said. “I like keeping everyone entertained.” Sunday’s show with the highly energetic, Razz-Ma-Tazz show choir was

exactly that, and the perfect way to put Christmas in high gear. Razz-Ma-Tazz is scheduled to perform tonight at 7 p.m. at Lemon Tree RV in Mission. In February and March they will be performing at (subject to change) Canyon Lake, Mission; Casa Del Valle, Donna; Aladdin Villas, Mission; Tip ‘O Texas, Pharr; and Bentsen Grove Resort, Mission.

The Razz-Ma-Tazz performance choir from Nikki Rowe does one of its Christmas song and dance numbers at Siesta Village in Weslaco. (Notice the lipstick on the side of the performer’s face.)

Concert tonight supports Backpack Ministry Casa Del Sol RV Park in Donna is hosting a Backpack Ministry Benefit Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. The park is located at 400 N. Val Verde. The concert is a free will offering and all funds will be distributed to the First United Methodist Church for their Backpack Ministry. This ministry fills backpacks with food items every Friday and delivers them to needy families. Each

backpack contains food to help support a family of four to eat over the weekend. The concert features gospel music, an old style sing-a-long, country music and storytelling. Anyone attending is encouraged to bring a camera for free photos with Santa Claus. The event is open to the public. For more information, call Butch Danielski at 956-464-8380.

Imagine singing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “God Bless America,” in Barbershop style four-part harmony. Now imagine having some fun performing tunes like “King of the Road” or “Ragtime Gal” as part of a men’s barbershop chorus that likes to liven things up and have a little fun. Imagine no more, men. If you enjoy singing, and especially if you have sung before in a choir or other group, the Men of A-Chord Barbershop Chorus wants

you to join them. The Men of A-Chord men’s chorus practices on Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, located at the southwest corner of Pecan and 2nd Street, in McAllen. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the group is invited to visit their rehearsals. As one member of the group said, “if you sing a bad note, they don’t jump on you,” and they’re all easy-going guys who like to ham it up.

Le Peep offers breakfast and lunch specialties Le Peep, located at 7700 N. 10th Street, in McAllen provides some of the best eating for breakfast and lunch to be found anywhere in the Valley. I took the Winter Texan Times Director of Marketing, Norma Reyes, with me on this visit that we both looked forward to with eager anticipation due to the wonderful reputation of Le Peep. The first course for Norma and I was a Gooey Bun, the specialty of the house. It consists of an English muffin covered with brown sugar, cinnamon and toasted almonds. It was a taste of my childhood with the addition of warm toasted almonds, which I love. They even include a serving of cream cheese and “Mom’s” sassy apples on the side. Norma enjoyed it too, especially the toasted almonds, which reminded her of going to the fair as a child. Next I ordered a Crab Cake Benedict, which is an English muffin topped with cream cheese, a crunchy crab cake and eggs topped with Hollandaise sauce. Most people get poached eggs but I chose scrambled. Good Eating! It comes with a serving of peasant potatoes seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic salt and sprinkled with parsley. And more apples! Perfect! Manager Marcos Bazaldua said the most popular Eggs Benedict is the Harvest Benedict with cream cheese, sautéed spinach and veggies. The menu also has a variety of pancakes including the seasonal sweet potato pancake, a chocolate chip pancake, a variety of waffles and toast. Norma mentioned the pancake breakfast with one egg, two mini pancakes and two strips of bacon is her mother’s favorite as she is a light eater. But she opted for the California Turkey sandwich instead of breakfast. It was served on pita bread

with warm lean turkey, bacon strips, melted Swiss cheese, crisp lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. After taking a few bites, she exclaimed, “My mouth is having a fiesta. Every bite has a different flavor!” The sandwich came with a small bowl of chicken tortilla soup that looked so good I was tempted to take it away from her. It had chunks of chicken in a soup base with a good flavor, and crispy chips on it along with chucks of avocado. The restaurant serves a variety of panini’s and other sandwiches to meet everyone’s taste. They do burgers for the diehard that cannot live without them, but the specialty sandwiches are the main feature at lunchtime. Bazaldua said the California Turkey Norma chose is the favorite lunchtime meal of their patrons. It’s a great place to go for a special treat such as a brunch out with the ladies!

Salvation Army seeks ‘Angel Tree’ donations

The Salvation Army in McAllen gathers donations each year for their “Angel Tree” program, which provides Christmas gifts – toys and clothing – for children from very needy families. This year they are trying to help over 2200 “little angels” though community members donations to sponsor and angel. According to Eloise Montemayor of the Salvation Army, there is very little time left to help as distributions to parents will be made Dec. 16. Montemayor said the children receive a gift bag valued about $50 containing at least four items. Two items come from the child’s wish list while two other items come from the family’s wish list for clothing sweater, shoes, jacket, pants and shirts. Montemayor said people who adopt an angel could do it by themselves or jointly with someone else. Or people with toys or clothing items who did not adopt an angel but who want to make a child’s Christmas happier could drop things items at the McAllen Salvation Army building. Gifts should not be wrapped when they are taken to the Salvation Army offices at 1600 N. 23rd Street in McAllen. For more information, call the McAllen office at 956682-1468. For Winter Texans living in Cameron County, the Salvation Army Headquarters is located at 201 E. Monroe in Harlingen.

Call (956) 423-2456 for information. In addition to the Christmas Angels program that served 620 families and 2092 children, Montemayor said in 2015 the Hidalgo Country Salvation Army provided 13,299 unduplicated nights of lodging in their emergency shelter and distributed 6123 hygiene kits to those who used the shelter. A total of 75,055 meals were served from their Soup Kitchen. A total of 1360 Thanksgiving meals were served. 50,014 meals and 27,087 sandwiches were served to refugees as part of the immigrant relief effort in conjunction with Sacred Heart Church in McAllen between June 11, 2014 and November 30 2015. Rent assistance was provided to 93 residents, food boxes went to 593 residents, 13,016 residents received clothing vouchers, and 7,145 received local bus vouchers. Approximately 502 people received one of “Tim’s Coats.” Box fans were given to 715 people and another 346 received furniture vouchers. Approximately 1263 people took part in Life Skills, English-as-a second-language, or AARP classes provided by the Salvation Army. Totals for services offered in 2016 will not be available until next year. Monetary donations are welcome to support these programs that help the needy. Port Isabel/SPI Boat Parade is Dec. 18 Reorganized with new sponsors, there will be a Port Isabel/South Padre Island Boat Parade after all. It will take place Sunday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. It will be hosted by Will and Jack’s Burger Shack. Elma Ruiz, chairperson, said the parade will begin at South Point and Long Island Village. It will travel through the swing bridge and cross under the Queen Isabella Causeway traveling along the bay side of the island. Judging will be done at the Painted

Marlin at Jim’s Pier and an award ceremony will be held following the parade at Louie’s Backyard. Ruiz said there are currently 12 boats in the parade that will be lit up with bright lights, characters and many will have special effects such as blowing snow. According to Ruiz, people who would like to ride on one of the boats and take part in the parade can call Jessica Tyler at (956) 579-2158. There is a $20 charge for riding one of the boats.

ALAMO MUSEUM From pg. 1

gan in the 1990s when she and her husband, Paul, lived in a Victorian house in Rockford, Ill. The house became a part of a village of about 35 Victorian homes near the downtown area. The couple owned an interior design shop that featured glassware and angels. Friends and family members also gave her angels as gifts. Over the years Pfeiffer collected over 1500 angels. Many of those angels are now on display at the Alamo Museum. The Alamo Museum, now run by volunteers, will be open Mondays and

Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Volunteer Herb Moering is willing to open for tours at special times if he is given advance notice. Anyone interested in a tour should call the Alamo Fire Department at (956) 781-2004 to set up a time. Admission is free but donations will gladly be accepted. The museum was closed through the summer and early fall months for renovation of the air conditioning system. The Alamo Museum is located at 130 S. 8th St, in Alamo.

duced by South Texas Organics, the largest organic citrus and vegetable grower in the state of Texas. The Holbrook family owns both South Texas Organics and Earth Born Market. “We offer five varieties of grapefruit, including Ruby Red, Rio Star, Whittaker Gold, Texas Grande and white grapefruit,” Emily added. And all of them have a different taste and color. The flesh of the grapefruit ranges in color from white to pink to red. The taste also ranges from the older varieties that have the old, traditional taste, to the newer varieties, like Ruby Red and Rio Star, with a much sweeter flavor. Emily Holbrook prepared a simple but colorful citrus salad consisting of four varieties of grapefruit as well as orange and tangerine slices. This makes a very attractive dish offering a different flavor experience with every bite. In addition to the grapefruit varieties, Earth Born currently has navel oranges, Marrs oranges, Honeyball oranges, Pineapple oranges, Meyer lemons, Valley lemons, Persian limes, tangerines and tangelos. The popular Lulu avocados, which are grown in the U.S., are now in season. Explaining why the Lulu avocados are so popular, Emily said they are creamier and sweeter than the Hass avocados grown in Mexico. And they don’t turn brown when you slice them. Earth Born can ship Valley citrus to your friends and family members back home, offering a selection of gift fruit packages. “We ship Fancy Fruit, which is the highest quality citrus,” said Emily Holbrook. Citrus Juice Earth Born has fresh squeezed, unpasteurized grapefruit juice, orange juice, lem-

onade and limeade made on the premises. Emily said fresh squeezed, unpasteurized citrus juices contain live enzymes, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that help boost the immune system. Assistant store manager Denver McGowen said many customers tell her the juice made from organic fruit is simply sweeter tasting than juice made from non-organic fruit. Sweeteners such as 100 percent organic agave, local wildflower honey and whole cane sugar are added to the lemonade and limeade to provide the sweetener it needs. The fresh squeezed citrus juices are known for their excellent flavor – far superior to the supermarket varieties. McGowen said many Winter Texans who are getting ready to go home in the spring come by the store and stock up on juices to take back to family and friends, or to put in the freezer. Cold Pressed Juices McGowen pointed out Earth Born also produces a line of cold pressed juices with different combinations of ingredients that help detox the body. Products used in the juices include pineapple, pear, green apple, cucumber, spinach, celery, lemon, tangerine, kale, romaine lettuce, beets, carrots, ginger, watermelon and even bee pollen, among others. The combination selected depends upon the heath goal the person is trying to achieve. These drinks are 100 percent fruit and vegetable juice with no added sugar. They are cold pressed to preserve nutrient values. “We make all the juices ourselves,” said Russon Holbrook. It’s like taking a daily

All juices are unpasteurized, have no added sugars or preservatives and provide the highest form of vitamins, nutrients and enzymes.” “We have a ‘farm to bottle concept,’” added Russon. “We use locally grown produce when we can. Apples have to be imported but kale, carrots, spinach, watermelon and other things are locally grown. We choose organic or naturally grown products whenever possible.” Local Honey The store also sells local honey such as the orange blossom honey. Russon Holbrook said, “The local beekeepers put their hives in our organic citrus groves, so the honey harvested there is less likely have been exposed to pesticides.” Many people say both the wildflower and orange blossom honey is excellent for sore throats and colds because it carries the local allergens, said McGowen.

Homemade Fudge, Etc. When you feel like indulging just a little, visit the folks at Earth Born Market and take home some of their wonderful fudge, freshly made right there at the store. They also sell homemade grapefruit and pecan pies. Look for high quality pecans – excellent for those pecan pies for Christmas. Denver also pointed out some gluten-free, non-GMO snacks that can be used on the Paleo diet not seen elsewhere in the Valley. The store carries several similar products designed for those with dietary issues or those who simply want food that is healthier to eat. Russon Holbrook stated Earth Born is planning to expand product offerings in the future. In January look for organically grown kale, cabbage, broccoli, onions and Hawaiian papayas. Go online to www.earthbornmkt.com to see items for sale. Or call (956) 682-2980 for information. Store hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday-Saturday.

From pg. 1 Victoria Palms Victoria Palms in Donna is helping 19 families in Mexico to have a merrier Christmas. Doing this project in conjunction with Mabel’s Clinic in Progreso, Mexico, selected families will receive a box with all the food they need to make a special Christmas dinner. Each member of the family also will receive wrapped Christmas gifts. Other residents of Victoria Palms have been making blankets that will be given to families in need through the Cleaker Heald Elementary School. Paradise Park Paradise Park in Pharr residents have a Christmas tree covered with hands bearing a child’s name and age. Persons who take a hand will provide new clothing for the child they selected. In addition to the tree the park also sponsors a Sunday Undies drive where everyone brings socks or underwear for younger children in need. Mission West Some residents of Mission West take turns ringing the bells at the local WalMart for the Salvation Army. Others are actively involved in the collection of food and toy for the Peñitas Food Pantry and its Christmas stocking program. Fun N Sun Members of Fun N Sun’s CRAB (Conservative Riding Adult Bikers) organization are collecting food and toys to be distributed locally to those in need. El Dorado RV Park The ladies at El Dorado RV Park have

as candy, small toys, pencils and socks to be distributed to the people who take part in the Peñitas Community Food Pantry Christmas distribution. While some of the ladies were making the stockings others were knitting winter caps to be distributed to the children. Paradise Park - Harlingen While not tackling a specific Christmas project, the park residents at Paradise Park in Harlingen contribute regularly to Loaves and Fishes, a homeless shelter and food pantry located in Harlingen. The park also has a band, Kitchen Klatter, that regularly gives concerts at nursing homes. Fountain at Peñitas The ladies at the Fountain of Peñitas have been making quilts for veterans. Working in conjunction with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3895 from La Joya, the ladies will deliver their quilts to veterans at the Alfredo Gonzalez Nursing Home in McAllen. Palm Resaca Residents of Palm Resaca MH Park in Brownsville regularly work at the local food pantry, helping with food distributions for the local needy. Activity Directors: If you would like to be included in a future edition of the Winter Texan Times, sharing what your park is doing to help those in need at Christmastime, send us a paragraph or two along with photographs to news@wintertexantimes.com. Thank you to all our Winter Texan friends for all you do to help those in need. Merry Christmas!

The Watts used to travel extensively but that was cut down dramatically when they sold their RV to settle down more at the park. The group, however, still travels and goes rock hunting – mainly in Starr County – out at ranches where they have been given permission. But Bruce has found rocks from all over the country that he uses to make his items – including the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, a nice rock in Colorado that he used

pg. 3 to create a desk clock that is in the display case at the park and one he even bought – a wild horse Jasper, that came out of the desert lands in the Idaho, Oregon, Utah area. His greatest find, however, may have been on one of the regular Friday hunts with the Bentsen Rock Club on one of the Starr County ranches. There he found what he called a “piece” of Cycad, a predecessor to the palm tree. The “piece” was actually an 85-pound slab of petrified Cycad that Watts and another carried back to the truck. Every year the rock club holds a gem and mineral show – this year it will be Feb. 4 at the park and the Cycad will be the featured rock. “We’ll have several samples of it, a little

bit of jewelry, a couple of belt buckles and some bolos,” Watts said. “That’s a pretty unique stone. It’s not rare, but it’s quite unusual.” Watts said even though he and his wife don’t travel as much, he still bumps into people who will tell him that they have a collection of rocks as well if he’d like to come see them. Many times he ends up buying them and storing them for a future project. “I have more rock than I’ll probably ever get to,” he said. “We have one of the best rock shops of any in the Valley and I enjoy making top quality merchandise. No glass, no plastic, nothing from China. Just the very best metal to wrap the pendants and some beautiful natural stone that I’ve picked up from all around the world.
