Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 30, No. 9 © 2016-2017 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, December 22, 2016 Leal Montalvo opens the bullfight season January 8

Santa Maria Bullring opens the 2017 Winter Texan season Sunday, Jan. 8 with Leal Montalvo, the 2016 maximo triunfador and winner of the Golden Ear Award. In the dramatic encounter with Leal’s last bull in the grand finale earlier this year, the bull caught him and tossed him ten feet in the air, and when he hit the ground, the bull picked him up again nearly putting a horn in his hip. Leal jumped up grabbed his cape and dropped onto both knees and caped the bull around him in a 360-degree pass that made the fans break into a roar. It was so dramatic they kept it up and he turned it on, ten more passes, and he limped away from his adversary. He then returned and grabbed the rose from the shoulders of the bull in the symbolic kill, and the fans kept roaring their approval. The judge, Don Gerardo Martinez, awarded him symbolic ears and tail and the golden trophy. Matador Montalvo suffered a tremendous hematoma on his right hip, that had to be tended to by doctors after his return to Monterrey. Appearing with Leal in the opener is the fantastic young matador Andre Lagravere who recently returned from a tour of Spanish rings including the capital in Madrid. He scored high among the Spaniards, appearing in ten different See Santa Maria pg. 15

Don-Wes Flea Market has something for everyone By Kathy Olivarez Who doesn’t like to find a bargain? According to the latest Winter Texan Survey, Winter Texans love to go to flea markets. And according to our sources, Don-Wes Flea Market is one of the best in the Valley, though there are dozens of flea markets all throughout the area. --Wes is located at 208 N. Victoria Road in Donna. Admission is free. There is a lunchroom that serves breakfast as well as hot dogs and hamburgers with fries along with other items for lunch. Manager Debbie Fitzgerald was at the lunch counter talking with Winter Texans who had returned for the new season. Musician Andy Coin was at a table eating lunch with a friend. There is always a musician in the back corner to provide entertainment for diners. On the day the Winter Texan Times See Flea Market pg. 28

Ray Seaton and Bill Baxter were the pack mules for the “stuff” their wives were buying.

Musicians enjoy performing in Winter Texan Orchestra

Bob Seymour leads the Winter Texan Orchestra during a Christmas concert at Enchanted Valley Ranch in Mission.

By Henry Miller Bob Seymour’s musical career begins, as he says it “the day my grandfather showed me where to put my fingers on the guitar strings.” As a young boy, his attention diverted toward wanting to be a veterinarian. However, when he graduated from Butler University, his degree was in music and he became a school band director. He remained in the music career until he decided it was time for change, when he worked with the Boy Scouts of America for 24 years. He then changed careers again and worked as the Executive Director of the Indianapolis Rotary Clubs for 15 years. Now, he is back to music conducting the Winter Texan Orchestra, which performed its final Christmas show of the See Orchestra pg. 25

Lindley Creek and Link Union come together “We are happy to be back in the Rio Grande Valley and performing for our friends,” said Kathie Greer of Lindley Creek. “Both our Christmas show and our regular show are new this year. The family is writing new music to perform and we are working on a new CD in Nashville that will come out after the first of the year,” said Kathie. “We are especially looking forward to our show, “Faith, Family, Freedom” that will also feature Link Union. It will take place at Park Place in Harlingen, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. We hope our fans will come out for that special event.” The Greer Family, known as Lindley Creek, is an acoustic family band playing traditional bluegrass and gospel music. They sing soulful songs, do family harmonies and perform some original music written by Katie Greer. They have performed together since 2003 at venues around their home state of Missouri. Later they branched out to travel the United States and Canada and, of course, the Rio Grande Valley playing their music and sharing their faith. Kathie Greer, mother, plays acoustic guitar, piano and clarinet. She started singing in church as a child and played in a country band in high school. She serves as stage director for the shows, maintains

their wardrobe and website and in general “is the glue that holds the family together.” John Rob Greer provides the rhythm, playing bass during their shows. While the entire family offers spiritual guidance through they music, John offers inspiring sermons at churches he visits on tour. Jase Greer is now 21 and an accomplished musician who plays fiddle, chin cello, saxophone, electric guitar and sings bass vocals. He took violin lessons with Jim VanCleve of the Josh Turner Band. His voice blends well with that of his sister when they sing harmony. He considers Michael Buble, Michael Cleveland and Andy Leftwich as his musical inspirations. At 19, Katie Greer is the lead singer for the group and primary mandolin player. She enjoys writing songs and Lindley Creek performs some of the songs she writes. Her inspirations are Carrie Underwood, Allison Krause, Toni Kelly and Manisa. Lindley Creek is currently in the Rio Grande Valley performing a Christmas show. The show can be seen Dec. 22 at 4 p.m. at Port Isabel Park Center and Dec. 23, Tropic Star, Pharr; Dec. 24, Sleepy Valley, Mission. They will do a show at Carefree Valley Resort in Harlingen on

Pad Thai at Asia Basil is excellent “This is excellent!” exclaimed Raul Martinez, the Winter Texan Times advertising executive who joined me to write a food review of Asia Basil, in Weslaco. “The thing that really gives it a special taste is the sprinkling of fresh cilantro and peanuts on top. It makes it pop!” I agreed. I had never eaten the dish before but found the combination of shrimp, chicken and beef in a bed of rice noodles with a flavored sauce to be very tasty. I would definitely eat it again. But that was just one of the items Tom brought out for us to sample. For appetizers we had crab puffs that were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Raul had never eaten one before and also found them to his liking. We were also served ginger chicken wings that were stir fried with ginger and onions for a unique taste that I liked. Tom also brought his Summer Rolls for us to try. They had a filling of pork, shrimp and sprouts. Unlike the soggy ones purchased in the stores, these had a crisp layer outside while the filling was tender. We were served a bowl of Special Beef Soup which includes rice noodles cooked with sliced round eye, brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs. According to Raul, it is similar to menudo, a Mexican holiday dish. I found the tendon to be a bit gelatinous but was aware that it is supposed to be very rich in minerals. We found it a bit bland at first until Samantha, our waitress, said we were supposed to put Sirache or Hoisin Sauce in it to give it the flavor we wanted. Raul added Sirache Sauce for a hot taste while I opted for the Hoisin sauce for the Asian. taste. Both of us found the soup much better with the added favoring. Tom told us some patrons order the soup with only the brisket in it. We both enjoyed the excellent meal. Raul even ordered Fried Rice with Shrimp to take home. I got a taste

and found it excellent. The foods served at Asia Basil are a combination of Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines. Tom prepares his meals without the MSG found in many Asian foods. He uses a chicken based flavoring instead. The prices are excellent ranging from $7.95 to $10.95 for most entrees with enough to share or take home. Give them a try. We think you’ll enjoy the experience. Asia Basil is located at located at 702 S. Texas Blvd., Weslaco.

An Interview with Bernie & Red

Popular entertainers Bernie & Red will be performing throughout the Rio Grande Valley during the month of January and here is a Q & A with them. Q. You have been visiting the Rio Grande Valley for quite some time; you must have noticed changes in the entertainment scene here over the years. A. Definitely. When we first traveled to the Valley almost 20 years ago there were very few performers who were targeting the Winter Texan community, something that has definitely changed in recent years. Now we have well known national acts performing in RV resorts, and countless “Tribute” and “Oldies” shows. There are also many regional artists like ourselves, from throughout the US and Canada who are including South Texas on their touring schedule, leading to a vibrant entertainment scene here in the Valley. Q. You have always prided yourself on producing a new show every year, is that still the case? A. Oh yes. We return to a lot of locations on an annual basis and feel a responsibility to deliver a new show. If people have enjoyed us in the past and choose to return, we feel we owe it to them to present something new. We’re excited about this year’s new show, “The British Invasion,” because these are all the songs that we enjoyed as teenagers back in Liver-

pool in the 60s. Little did we know when we saw The Beatles at The Cavern and other locations, that they would go on to change the face of popular music forever. So, of course, there are several Beatles songs in this show, as well as loads of other songs from the 60s, everything from “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” to “Downtown,” and from “Ferry Cross the Mersey” to “House of the Rising Sun.” You’ll also hear the stories behind the hits and the performers, and as an added bonus, Johnny Carson’s alter-ego from the 60s, Carnac, will return with all new predictions. Look out for the new show at select locations, but we will also be presenting some of our older shows so check listings in the Winter Texan Times. Q. You are known for the comedy routines in your shows. You were voted “Best Comedy Act” in last year’s Valley Star Awards, not for the first time. That must have been rewarding. A. Definitely. And a big “Thank You” to everyone who voted for us and also thanks to the Winter Texan Times for organizing the voting process via the ballots that you include with the newspaper. Yes, comedy is a big part of our shows and we strive to write new material each year. Audiences enjoy our music, which we’re very thankful for, but the comedy is what

makes us different. Let’s face it; we all need a good laugh on a regular basis. It’s good for you! Q. You celebrated an anniversary re-

cently, tell us about that. A. Yes, we celebrated 51 years of marriage in November, 40 of those years as See Bernie & Red pg. 21

From pg. 20 entertainers. We feel so fortunate to be making a living doing something that we love, and seeing the world in the process and even now, still enjoying our travels. Q. You don’t get tired of living out of a suitcase? A. Well, fortunately, like a lot of Snowbirds, we travel in an RV, so no suitcases! Our home is always with us and thanks to cell phones, Wi-Fi and computers, we can still take care of business wherever we are. In addition, we get to travel this wonderful country. Q. What are your plans for the rest of the year? A. This winter tour is our busiest period of the year. We’ll be back home in Canada by mid-April, and by then we’ll need to do some work with our half acre of organic blueberries. The rest of the summer will include some concerts, but lots of time off. We have half a dozen grand kids, so they take up some of our time and we try to visit relatives in the UK each year if possible, so that’s planned for the fall. And in between all of those things, we’ll be working on our new show for next season. Q. In past years you have donated a show to the St Baldrick’s Foundation, raising awareness of childhood cancer. Will you be doing that again this year? A. We will. It will be our final show

for this season. It will be at Texas Trails in Pharr Monday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. We’re losing track, but we think this is the tenth annual concert for St Baldrick’s. All 100 percent of the proceeds go to the charity. So far we’ve raised over $20,000! Thank you to everyone who has supported the event in the past. We always try to make this a special concert by encouraging requests from the audience. We try to include some of our lesser heard songs and routines along with material that no one has heard before. This concert is for a very worthy cause, so we encourage as many people as possible to attend and support the charity. Bernie and Red can be seen Jan. 7, at Orange Grove RV, Edinburg (show #3); Jan 8, Bentsen Grove RV, Mission, (show #2); Jan 10, Alamo Rose RV, (show #5); Jan. 15, Valley View Estates, (show#5); Jan 18, Alamo Rec-Veh, (Show #1); Jan. 21, Mission West RV, (new show); Jan. 22, and Sunshine RV, Harlingen, 2 p.m., (new show). They can also be see Jan. 24, Tropic Star RV, Pharr (show #2); Jan. 25, Winterhaven Resort, Brownsville, 2 p.m., (new show); Jan. 26, Siesta Village, Weslaco, (show #2); Jan. 29, Winter Ranch RV, Alamo, 3 p.m. (new show); and Jan. 30, Texas Trails RV, Pharr, 2 p.m. (best of all shows).

www.wttrgv.com were in the ORCHESTRA

From pg. 1 season on Sunday at the Enchanted Valley Ranch in Mission. “I think it’s wonderful that these seniors have remained playing their instruments and have carried some of the things they’ve learned and done and loved in high school and college,” said Shirley Robinson, who no longer holds the cochair position of social events, but is still doing it until the park finds a replacement. The orchestra is not to full strength as of yet, currently with about 40 of its 50 regulars, but the sound the musicians provided Sunday, performing several Christmas Classics such as “Silent Night” and “Silver Bells” along with some medley mixes was nothing short of holiday mood making. It was precise and spanned the gamut of sound from light and easy to commanding. Seymour conducted the ensemble while his wife played piano. Seymour has been conducting the orchestra, which practices and stores their instruments at Tip O Texas RV Resort in Pharr, for the past four years. Prior to conducting, he played the tuba. Now only Herb Burket plays the tuba, and he had a solo in Sunday’s performance, “Hark The Herald Tubas Sing.” “I met Herb in the Salvation Army Band,” Seymour said. “I invited him to come perform and next thing we knew we

85

Rio Grande Valley Concert band.” Seymour is currently limited in how much he can do while enduring a heart condition. “I’ve been a little under the weather and have a heart issue that needs to be addressed and fixed,” he said. “But they can fix just about anything these days so I’m hoping this is a fairly quick fix.” While he works on improving his health, he’s also been at work increasing numbers in the band. One of the newest members is 16-year-old Rebecca Salazar, who plays the violin. “She’s homeschooled so she really has no school or group to play in,” he said. “While the schools have orchestras and bands to play in, the homeschooled are just sitting in in their house. When I asked her to play she was excited – and that’s an important part of playing an instrument, being in a group and performing. She said she’s going to bring a legion of string players to us.” Seymour said he’s hoping to add more strings to the section, especially the violin since strings are the quietest of all sections and demands larger numbers to equal out the sound. He already is counting on some new cello players and a viola player coming up from Mexico City in a couple weeks. Sunday’s performance also included some of the more traditional carols to sing See Orchestra pg. 29

www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com FLEA MARKET

From pg. 1 visited Randy Parks was playing. While in the Valley he works with Jack Nelson and the County Line Band but was soloing that day. Known for bluegrass, and country music, Randy has performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall and many other venues. Performers on other occasions included Lynn Dvornak, Ruthi, Jim Staton and Cactus Willie. There were a number of Winter Texans shopping at Don-Wes. We met Ray Seaton from Missouri talking with Bill Baxter from Maine. Both men had accompanied their wives who were shopping and the men were holding the bags of goods their wives had already selected. Ray said his wife was “looking for stuff... oddities she cannot find at home.” Bill said he goes two to three times a month and frequently meets friends there. His wife loves to shop at the flea market because she can find almost anything she wants. There are fresh fruits and vegetables outside and many different things inside. I continued walking. Seeing my brace, Fran Barnes of Active Mobility offered me a scooter, which I gladly took. She rents them by the day or by the month and also sells them. As I rode around I found trinkets appropriate to send the grandchildren for Christmas. There was also a Santa enticing people to come into the store and tell him what they want for Christmas. Coastal Jewelry had some really nice costume jewelry. On another row there was a stand with magnetic jewelry that supposedly helps people with arthritis and balance problems. Another stand had Tupperware in all shapes, sizes and colors. Gonzalez Mexico has woodcarvings, pottery, baskets, and Mexican toys that people might like to buy in Mexico to take home to friends or family. One long booth has all kinds of quilting materials and other sewing supplies to aid the many quilters who spend their winters in the Rio Grande Valley. There was a display of all kinds of greeting cards for sale. Judy’s claims to have the

latest fashions for Winter Texans. There is a game center if someone needs a special game to send home to a grandchild. There is a large shop that specializes in Amish and Wisconsin cheeses. The store also had a variety of Amish baked noodles and jars of beets, carrots, onions and a variety of jams. They had Amish popcorn in white, black, yellow, and purple colors for sale. Nine flavors of bratwurst are available. They also sell the long five pound rolls of Amish butter that has no additives. Don’t miss the roasted nuts and fudge! They are delicious! The sales girl said Winter Texans loved the fudge. Look for Al’s Jerky with regular mild, hot, holy cow, and teriyaki jerky! Then look for the ice cream stand to cool off your mouth. One booth has car and RV parts. Outside by the entrance there is a booth that fixes windshields while you shop although it was not open in the middle of the week. Another booth sells all sorts of flags. Anyone who loves to shop for a bargain at a flea market will not want to miss this one. Don-Wes has a great variety of vendors and offers something for everyone.

Debbie Sturn at the cheese stand displays a block of Wisconsin cheese and a bottle of Amish beets for sale.

They will also play two more times on their “home turf” at Tip O’ Texas. “I’m just fascinated with all the jams and dances and music that comes out of all the parks,” Robinson said. “To me it’s amazing and fantastic that these seniors are willing to play their instruments and put the time and energy in it. It’s really great.” There were 16 parks represented in the Winter Texan Orchestra, based on Seymour’s latest count. The park he and

Entries being accepted for ‘Turning of the Quilts’

The Mission Historical Museum is once again looking for antique (or just “old and interesting”) quilts for a “Turning of the Quilts” program to be offered in February. Quilts are presented stacked on a bed. As each quilt is shown, it is turned down to reveal the next quilt, until all have been presented. The museum will be accepting vintage quilts from now until Friday, Jan. 27. Quilts can be brought in Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum will be closed December 23 through 26, and January 1 and 2. Please provide as much information

as you can about your quilt, such as who made it, how old is it, how you got it, etc. Viewers would also be interested in any stories associated with the quilt. All quilts will be handled by trained and knowledgeable individuals. You may bring more than one. “Turning of the Quilts” will be presented as part of the Awards Ceremony at the Eleventh Annual Mission Quilt Show at the Mission Historical Museum at 2 p.m. on February 10. This is a wonderful opportunity to show off some of treasured quilts, and maybe learn a thing or two about them as well. For those who have not yet registered

for the annual Mission Historical Museum Quilt Show, quilts and quilted items are being accepted through Jan. 4. Quilts to be displayed during the quilt show will also be accepted Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for the holiday scheduled closing dates. Quilts and wall hangings must be ready to hang with a sleeve for display purposes. Entries are accepted on a first-in-firstaccepted basis. Because of limited space, the museum reserves the right to close entries before the deadline. This will allow for the best possible presentation for all entries. To allow for the broadest repre-

sentation, participants may submit only one item per person. Any quilt entered in this show within the past five years is not eligible for entry this year. The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third places in each category. Best-ofShow and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. The exhibit opens on Saturday, Jan. 14, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 11. Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty in downtown Mission. Admission is free. For more information, call the museum at 956-580-8646.

Johnny Ray Gomez came from a musical family starting with his grandfather, Juan Reyes Gomez, who left Mexico with his guitar, which he used when he sang to his grandson. His mother Loretta sang and played piano and while his father had a rich bass voice. The two met in an A Cappella choir. He has four brothers. His oldest brother, Larry, had a dance band that played throughout the Midwest for weddings and nightclubs. Johnny Ray’s musical talents were noticed early. By age 4 he was drumming. At 9 he played saxophone. At age 14 he was playing piano and keyboards with artists like Tiny Tim, Freddy Fender, and Gary Puckets when they performed in

Omaha. In the Valley, Johnny Ray will be doing an accordion/comedy show. He studied accordion with Johnny Swoboda, who founded the Silver Streaks Accordion Band. Swoboda’s ability to play and teach was legendary and he taught over 400 students to play accordion. Johnny Ray has now been an accordion player and comedian for over 59 years, starting in high school when he and drummer Mike Petersen and guitarist Mel Daley played for their high school dances. Later, Joe Cohen joined their group and the band played for dances in the Midwest. The band was a hit on television and

Johnny Ray hosted “Dance Stand with the Rolling Stone,” a takeoff on “American Bandstand” that was a local show in Omaha. David Clayton Thomas, who later played with “Blood, Sweat & Tears” was in the audience. But things changed for Johnny Ray in 1959 when he took his accordion to New York City and won The Ted Mack show. The world opened up to him and he played in Las Vegas, at Lake Tahoe, in Reno, in Playboy Clubs around the country, and has appeared on national television several times. Johnny Ray toured for several years playing all over the country.

In 2012 he was selected as FAME’s Lead Guitarist of the Year in the Rio Grande Valley. Recently he was nominated for Dobro Player of the Year with the Bluegrass Association of Iowa. He is a member of the National Traditional Country Hall of Fame. “Roger will be incorporating more dobro music into his performances this year,” said Sharon, Roger’s wife. Sharon brings both exquisite vocals and energetic bass playing to the group and emcees for their performances. She plays drums, bass, rhythm guitar and sings lead and harmony. Sharon has won a National Traditional Country Music Association International Singing Competition, the Nebraska State Female Championship, and National Country Music Festival Singer’s Division. She won the FAME Award for Bassist of the year in 2012. In 2016 she was nominated for 2016 Bass Player of the Year with Bluegrass Music Association of

Iowa. Jimmy Hanson, another band member of the band, is known for his rhythm guitar and great vocals during country music dances. Jerry Neeman, long-time member of the band, plays trumpet and gives the band a sound that is a bit different from other country bands. A former band director, who specializes in brass instruments, he is a member of the National Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame. Dec. 27 through Jan. 4 he can be seen playing with Jay and Tammy. Roger’s sister, Vanessa, sometimes joins the band and is an outstanding vocalist. Local drummer, Epi Martinez, works with the band during the winter season. The Kenaston Band makes regular appearances on RFD-TV and the Midwest Country Show. They have worked with Stonewall Jackson, Jimmy C. Newman, Charlie McCoy and many other well-known artists. The Kenastons host two festivals each year: the Country & Western Fiddler’s Jamboree in Springview, Nebraska (May 2107), and the Wahoo Country Music Show (June 22-25, 2017). Johnny appeared with Myron on a show where they played duets on two songs, “Glowworm,” and “Lady of Spain.” His accordion talents are known worldwide as he has performed in Japan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Ar-

gentina, Monte Carlo, Canada and the United States. While he is a phenomenal accordion player, he is also well known for the comedy routine he performs while playing. He is booking as a novelty act because he both plays and does a comedy routine. Anyone wishing to reach him for a booking may do so at johnnyraygomez@cox.net. Or they may call him at (402) 651-4598.
