Tejano Christmas was delightful play
By Kathy Olivarez “Tejano Christmas,” adapted from “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, was a delightful addition to the festivities of the Christmas season. The play was written and directed by Pedro Garcia, who also starred in the leading role. It was produced and first presented by the Pharr Community Theater. With the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Watson who have been trying to convince the theater to take the plays to the parks for seven years, the play was presented in three different Winter Texan locations this season. Garcia plays Ezequiel Codos, a wealthy water broker in the Rio Grande Valley who plans to sell the majority of the water rights along the Rio Grande to investors for a large profit, leaving the people of the Valley almost without water. He persists in the plan despite warnings from his employees and others. He cares for no one but himself. When carolers arrive to sing Christmas carols and ask for donations for the poor, his answer is “Puro pedo,” which translates as baloney or worse. When his employee asks for Christmas off, he grants it reluctantly but tells him to be there early the morning after Christmas to work on those water contracts. He gets visits from his attorney and his nephew who wish him a merry Christmas but his standard answer is “Puro pedo.” After a miserable Christmas Eve meal of menudo, he goes home and falls asleep. He is first visited by the ghost of Christmas past in the ghostly form of a woman who fought in the Mexican Revolution. She takes him back to revisit his past where his greed for money outweighed See Tejano Christmas pg. 31
Frontera Audubon Society is city escape for wildlife
By Kathy Olivarez Nestled on a 15-acre tract of land at 1101 South Texas Blvd., near downtown Weslaco, the Frontera Audubon Society is a city escape for the birds and other wildlife that make it their home. Filled with rich vegetation, it’s hard to imagine that just a few feet away heavy traffic runs up and down Texas Blvd. It has become a birding hotspot for Weslaco. At the front of the site is the historic Skaggs House that’s under renovation for a future headquarters. The home was built in 1927 for a local banker and citrus grower, Lester Skaggs, and his wife, Florence. In 1992 their daughter, Bebe, donated the home to Frontera Audubon Society. In 1994 it was designated a Texas Historical Landmark. There is an old orchard to one side and a small picnic area on the other side. The Fran Holmes and Jann Englemann

Bluegrass At Lamplighter
By Henry Miller MISSION – Bluegrass music has a variety of unique sounds within its ensemble. The twang of a banjo, the smooth sound of an auto harp or a fidgety fiddle to gear things up are part of its eclectic mix that, when played together, bring unison to the band. Such is the case with the Bluegrass Jam from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursdays at Lamplighter Mobile Home and RV Subdivision, hosted by Wanda and Jim Sanders. With an eight-to-12 person crew of regulars on stage, the Bluegrass Jam here is a mix of genres, all with a little bit of country - tweaked to ring out that unique Appalachian sound. “They’re really good,” said Mary Klesner, who along with her husband, Dick Klesner, are Lamplighter residents and regulars to the jam sessions. “We have some of the best jams here – bluegrass, country and gospel.” The Sanders began hosting the jam
about four years ago. They live in the Golf View Estates in Mission but lived at Lamplighter previously where they started the jam session and have continued to host it. “A lot of people come all the time – it’s a very faithful group,” said Jim, who plays the guitar and began playing in 1998, “after I finished my working career and got married again.” A Flint, Mich., native, Sanders was introduced to his future wife by a friend in Arkansas. “She was playing church music and has done that all her life,” he said. “We met and took it from there.” The two worked together as contract musicians in the Ozark Folks Center for nearly 12 years. Wanda, who also played the guitar, transitioned to the auto harp, previously known as a zither, because Jim played guitar and because the auto harp is a very prominent instrument in folk muSee Bluegrass pg. 28

Branson entertainer Ralph Kuster delights audiences with one-man show
By Henry Miller MISSION — Young and old alike came to life recently at Ralph Kuster’s Christmas Show at Valley View Estates RV Park. Kuster, a one-man singing sensation, who has performed regularly in Branson, Mo., and has delighted Winter Texas across the Rio Grande Valley, performed something for everyone at a full house in Mission. “I don’t know how many of you may remember this person, Jimmy Durante,” he said. Durante was the narrator of the 1969 30-minute Christmas television cartoon special, “Frosty the Snowman,” and sang the title song to the show. Even if the younger ones in attendance didn’t recognize Durante’s name, they sure were familiar with his voice as Kuster impersonated it perfectly during his rendition of the magical snowman’s song. For Birdy Selleck, the park’s entertainment director, the Durante impersonation brought back a different type of memory. Durante had a large, bulbous nose that he often referred to as his Schnozzola – and it became his nickname later in life. Selleck remembers meeting Durante on Long Island, where she grew up, asking him to
let her touch his nose. “I pulled on it,” she said. “My mom owned a salon and did the hair of several celebrities or their wives and I met him and asked him.” But Kuster wasn’t done there. Kuster, a Canadian who resides at the Paradise Park in Pharr, had plenty of songs, impersonations and music for everyone. From a welcoming Christmas song highlighting how other lands celebrate Christmas with songs like the Hawaiian, “Mele Kalikimaka,” and “Feliz Navidad,” Kuster kept the audience involved with balls and other fun interactions. He performed in front of one audience member, impersonating Elvis Presley and then moved to another, giving her a Christmas card while singing, “Return to Sender.” For Kuster, performing at Valley View Estates RV Park is a coming home of sorts. After all it was the Sellecks who first brought him down to South Texas to perform in an annual showcase, where entertainers from all over are given nine minutes to show their talents in front of Winter Texan activity/entertainment diSee Ralph Kuster pg. 21

Schlitterbahn plans New Year’s bash For those wanting to celebrate New Year’s in a big way, the Schlitterbahn on South Padre Island is a great place to do it. Plan to stay at the Schlitterbahn, 100 Padre Blvd., and enjoy their New Year’s special menu. Then make plans to view the fireworks being set off at midnight to celebrate the New Year’s arrival. Have a glass of champagne at midnight and then watch the fireworks displays. They will be on the bayside and the beach side of the island so they should be easy to see. After a leisurely rest, stay and see or participate in the annual New Year’s Day Polar Dip at Clayton’s Bar & Grill (register at 10 a.m. and dip at noon). The wrong ad was inadvertently placed in the Winter Texan Times last week. It was the ad for 2014. The following is the corrected menu for festivities at the Schlitterbahn for New Year’s Even 2016.
The Schlitterbahn has a great menu planned for New Year’s Eve. There will be hors d’oeuvres from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. They will include cascading fruits & vegetables with dipping sauce, Mexican shrimp cocktails with fresh limes, shrimp and Mahi Mahi ceviche, beef and chicken satay with dipping sauce, buffalo mozzarella wrapped in prosciutto with basil balsamic pesto drizzle, chicken roulade in puff pastry an assorted finger sandwiches. From 10 p.m. to midnight there will be sweet and salty treats available including assorted nuts, spicy edamame, Bavarian pretzels and other treats. The cost of this celebration with a room for up to four people is only $249. For reservations or more information call (956) 761-1160. Go out and enjoy a New Year’s celebration in warm South Texas!

Victoria Palms offers new items on the lunch menu By Kathy Olivarez DONNA — Mark Arevalo, chef at Victoria Palms RV Resort, has added several new items to the resort’s restaurant menu. One item Arevalo says is popular with the ladies is the new spring salad, made with Spring greens and topped with Mandarin oranges, strawberries, almond slices, shredded mozzarella cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette. Another item is the Queen’s Chicken, which is chicken breast stuffed with spinach, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes resting on a cream base. Or try the Croque Monsieur sandwich made with two slices of Sourdough bread, dipped in a milk, egg, salt and garlic batter before being cooked like French toast. The bread is stuffed with ham and cheese, smothered in cheese sauce and served with a side of hash browns. Another option is the fish tacos made with blackened fish, which has become popular at the Friday fish fry. Several soups are new as well. The Chicken Chipotle with peppers and the Chicken Poblano with pureed green peppers are both new to the menu.

Tuesdays are burger nights and Arevalo has added a new Monster Burger with a fried egg on top. I asked him about the custom of adding the egg, which I have seen on the menu in several restaurants. Arevalo said it’s a Puerto Rican custom that has spread to the United States. Arevalo said the most popular burger is made with Swiss cheese and covered in mushrooms. The restaurant offers Philly sandwiches and continental clubs on sourdough bread and featuring cheddar cheese. I asked Arevalo what items were the most popular on the menu. He said many people love the liver and onions the restaurant serves. After listening to his menu options, Norma Reyes, Winter Texan Times sales and advertising director and I made selections. We chose the Chicken Chipotle soup. Reyes said it was spicy and had a bit of a kick to it! Both of us enjoyed it very much. We opted to try his Queen’s chicken. It was delicious! The chicken had a good flavor and was tender and moist. It was served with a side of grilled zucchini and squash that was crisp and flavorful. We also tried the blackened fish tacos that were also delicious! Arevalo makes his own blackening spices that have a special flavor. The tacos were very good. For dessert we shared a slice of his double chocolate cake, which has enough chocolate to make any chocoholic happy. Then we also shared a lemon bar, which Arevalo said was a best seller. That also was good. Arevalo said Chef Dave Roundtree is back again and still making omelets for the Sunday buffet with whatever the customer wants. He has probably made over 70,000 by now!

Performers Andy and Brenda Coin are back in the Rio Grande Valley
By Kathy Olivarez Andy and Brenda Coin, known as the Coin Collection, have returned to the Rio Grande Valley and are hard at work. For the past five years the couple has appeared on Tuesdays and Wednesday at Paradise Roadhouse Bar & Grill, 3700 E. Expressway 83 in Weslaco from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. On Fridays they can be found at El Vaquero’s Hangout, 5704 FM 84 in Mission, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Starting on Jan. 8 the Coin Collection can be seen at Louie’s Backyard on Sundays 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 31, they will be hosting the New Year’s Party at Country Sunshine Resort, 1601 S. Airport Drive in Weslaco. Tickets are $12.50 and can be purchased at the resort office. Call Nancy or Debbie at (956) 638-3158 or (956) 969-7171. Andy is from Missouri and worked as a full-time entertainer there for many years. During that time, he opened for Kathy Mattea, K.D. Lang and Keith Whitley. He also owned Andy’s Music Store in Kansas City. After moving to Nashville he made a guest appearance on Hee Haw. In 1990 he moved to Branson and started the Frontier show at the 76 Music Hall. He was the
original pioneer in what has now become Hot Winter Fun, promoting year-round entertainment in Branson. Andy is a versatile singer and plays and sings what the crowd wants. If they want jazz, blues, country, classic rock & roll, Andy can play it. He can even do a full show of George Jones if requested. Brenda grew up on a farm near Dickinson, North Dakota where the badlands and a musical family insured true country music. She participated in many talent competitions and was named second runner-up in the Miss Dickinson Pageant in 1979. She toured with many bands and eventually started her own band, “Quarter Moon.” In 1989 she moved to Branson where she sang in shows including The Vance Greek Show, The Eddie Cash, The Buck Trent Show and the Warren Stokes Country Review in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Brenda starred as Patsy in the Patsy Show and when she sings Patsy Cline’s songs, she sounds like Patsy. To Brenda the highlight of her career was getting to sing with Charley Pride as a feature and backup singer for 10 years at the Charley Pride Theater in Branson. She toured England, Ireland and Scotland
with Charley. She sang with him on several cruise ships, working with Tim McGraw, Shenandoah, John Anderson and Alison Krause & Union Station. Andy and Brenda worked together on the Memories of the Morning Show and the Larry Musgrave Show. They opened for acts like Alabama and Wayne Newton at The Jukebox Jamboree Show. They also
worked in many other Branson shows. For the last six years they have been coming to the Rio Grande Valley to entertain Winter Texans. Andy and Brenda are versatile in their music and perform whatever type music the audience wants to hear. For more information on their shows or to book them call Andy at (417) 294-1052.

rectors. It provides the directors a chance to see and hear the talent live before hiring them for the season. “Me and my husband were visiting our daughter in Greenup, Ill. And I walked into an antique store and heard his voice – they were playing a gospel CD,” Selleck said. “I asked who that person was and thought ‘he has to come to the Valley.’” Ironically, Kuster and the storeowner were friends and Kuster had recently stopped by to visit and drop off some CDs on the way to perform in Branson. Selleck gave the owner the name and number of the showcase contact; he attended and has been coming back ever since. “The people are so kind and this is just a wonderful place, said Kuster, who has recorded eight CDs – from gospel to county to Christmas and more. Kuster started his professional career, as he puts it, “late in life,” performing in front of a live audience for the first time in 2004. He had grown up singing in high school and performing in plays. Finally, he decided to chase his dream and has found success and “plenty of joy.” He sings with several different voices and
can impersonate the likes of Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra and others. His voice also has an amazing range, what he calls his low voice and high voice. He can sing deeply rich songs like Johnny Cash’s, “Folsom Prison Blues,” or “Ring of Fire,” and turn around to the light, tenor sound of Sinatra or Neil Diamond. “I’ve always loved to sing,” he said, adding he knows 613 songs but may have to refresh a little depending on the show. “That’s what I do in my Toyota driving across the country,” he said. “It has 320,000 miles on it…that’s a lot of time to refresh.” Here is a list of Ralph Kuster’s upcoming variety shows: Jan. 8, 6:30 p.m., Sunshine RV Resort, Harlingen Jan. 17, 7 p.m., Trails End RV Resort, Weslaco Jan. 27, 7 p.m., Lazy Palms Ranch, Edinburg Feb. 17, 7 p.m, Eastgate RV Park Park, Harlingen Feb. 23, 7 p.m., Paradise Park, Pharr Call (417) 230-8198 to schedule Ralph Kuster for a show.

DECEMBER 29, 2016 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES BLUEGRASS
From sic, the style they would perform at the Ozark Center, Wanda said. “Folk music is known for telling stories back when there were no newspapers,” Wanda said. “A lot of times, people would put those stories to music and it traveled from one community to another. Now, bluegrass plays a lot of those songs and added banjos, the mandolin, the fiddle, maybe a Dobro and it brings a different sound to the music – whether it’s an old folk song, or gospel or country song – it sounds different when it’s done bluegrass style.” While there are as many as a dozen regular musicians in the group, others get a chance to perform with them. Sometimes there are as many as 50 people waiting in front of the stage, instrument in hand for their opportunity to join in. Some will wait more than two hours to perform one song.
pg. 1 “They must love it,” Jim said. “I like the different instrumentation of bluegrass; banjo, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass and guitar and it all it comes together. Most of the music we do is adaptations from old time music. Not the sixties but the old-time folk music. That’s where the basis from Bluegrass come from, they just speed it up.” The songs were as wide-ranging in style as the instrumentation on stage. The group performed “Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” “Pretty Red Wing,” which some websites claim date back to Native American days - “Walking the Dog,” along with popular gospel songs “I’ll Fly Away,” “I Saw The Light,” and others. The Sanders performed the well-known Country Gospel song, “By The Mark,” written by Gillian Welch. “People request it,” Wanda said. “Bluegrass style just livens it up.”
www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com
Lamplighter resident Lance Giberson requested to hear upright bass player Jessie Green sing “Beulah Land,” a song written in 1875, and she performed it acapella, much to his delight. Giberson and his wife, Gloria, are regular attendees at the jam. He said he requests that song and loves to hear it anytime he can. Giberson has been diagnosed with stage four Melanoma, the serious form of skin cancer where the cancer can spread from the lymph nodes to other organs, according to healthline.com. Still, Giberson was laughing and joking and enjoying the moment listening to all the performers. “You know, if I had to live my life over again - I tell people this all the time – I
would live it exactly the same way. I’ve been blessed and have no regrets.” Giberson said he’s going to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for most tests and his outlook is extremely positive. “They can cure things like this,” he said. In the meantime, he and Gloria, GiGi as he calls her, will continue to be regulars at the Bluegrass Jam on Thursday mornings and maybe as well at the Sunday Gospel Jam and Thursday Night Country Jam. “Here’s a fact – I’m smarter than my wife is and she’ll agree,” he said, jokingly. “I married her and all she got was me – see, I am smarter.”
Ron Raymer, left, plays the mandolin while Larry Peterson plays the fiddle during the Bluegrass Jam at the Lamplighter RV Resort in Mission.

Winter Texans who love magic will want to see Roger Wayne
By Kathy Olivarez Illusionist Roger Wayne has returned to the Rio Grande Valley and is preparing for his 2017 performances. Wayne has over 30 years of traveling and entertaining audiences of all ages. His past show was called Roger and Lee Anne’s Grand Illusion Magic Show. It was the largest traveling illusion show with over 10,000 pieces of equipment, with shows in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Wayne is a member of the International brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians. He has worked with headliners such as Ed Mc-
Mahon, EGN’s, “Bozo Circus,” and has been featured on radio and TV shows. Now Wayne has a new show for Winter Texans that features live colored doves that completely vanish at the end of their segment. The show includes lots of audience participation, including a super hero act and a chicken act, lots of music and comedy. A special attraction is the levitation of his lovely wife. The show is completely self-contained as he furnishes his own sound equipment, backdrops and lighting. On Dec. 31, 2015 they performed at Victoria Palms. Karen Humphry, activity director, said, “Roger and his wife were
part of our evening line-up of activities. If his type of entertainment is what you are looking for, Roger would be a great source to consider.” Roger can be seen Jan. 2, at Palm Shadows; Jan. 3, Country Sunshine; Jan. 7, Restful Valley; Jan. 8, Trophy Gardens, 6 p.m.; Jan. 19, Tropical Winds; Jan. 22, Sunshine, 6:30 p.m.; Feb. 2, Eldorado Acres; Feb. 11, Wagon City North; Feb. 12, Fun & Sun; Feb. 19, Lakewood R.V., 6:30 p.m.; Feb. 21. From current headquarters is located behind the home and is accessed from the rear of the building. The native habitat is Tamaulipan Thornnscrub forest but there is an orchard butterfly garden, along with wetlands and ponds. Some of the plants that can be seen include the Soapberry Jaboncillo, Rio Grande Olive, Texas Mountain Laurel, Crucita, Granjeno, Guayacan Montezuma Bald Cypress, Huisache and many other plants that live in a thorn scrub forest ecology. Growth is thick and has created a thicket so dense it’s impossible to get off the one-mile long trail in some locations. There is a Hackberry forest on one side and a small Sabal Palm grove near the back of the thicket. Four lakes and ponds
pg. 1 offer habitat for wetland birds; there is an overlook on one of the larger lakes while the largest lake has a boardwalk over a portion of it. There are several feeding stations to attract the birds. Many birds make their home in the thicket behind the visitor’s center. Some birds commonly found at Frontera include Chachalaca, Great Kiskadee, Mockingbird, Clay-colored Thrush, the Black-Crested Titmouse and the elusive Green Jay. Others are more rare. Recent sightings include the Black Thrush, White Ibis, Blue Gnatcatcher, Yellow-throated Warbler and Orange-crowned Warblers. Frontera keeps a bird board by the entrance to the visitor center to tell visitors what birds to look for as they visit. See Frontera Audubon pg. 31

Look for lizards scurrying across the trail, turtles in the pond and there might even be a squirrel or two making their home in the thicket! Jann Engleman and her husband, Barry, and Fran Holmes and her husband, Randy, were among the people taking advantage of the pretty day at Frontera Audubon Society to do some “birding.” The Englemans live at Bentsen Palm while the Holmes are camper /workers at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. The ladies were standing by the small pond near the entrance to the vis-
itor’s center while their husbands were discussing photographing the wildlife a littler further down the trail. The ladies enjoy looking for birds and other wildlife they don’t see in their home states. Admission to Frontera Audubon is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors. It’s open Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. It is closed on Monday. It is a small retreat from the busy life of the city the birds and other wildlife appreciate very much. And so do the people who come to see them.
DECEMBER 29, 2016 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 31 brought to the park. Several others who do not like to drive at night agreed with him. Don Woltmon said he enjoyed the play very much. “It was cute and very entertaining,” said Woltmon. “The cast did a great job of presenting the play down to the smallest of the children. I would definitely attend another play if it was brought to the park.” Perhaps the play will be revived next
Christmas season. If so, don’t miss a chance to see this colorful adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” that fits the Rio Grande Valley. The Pharr Community Theater will be performing “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare abridged” at Countryside RV in Donna on New Year’s Eve and Pine to Palm Resort in Weslaco on Jan. 14.
