Serving Winter Texans From Mission To South Padre Island Since 1987 Vol. 30, No. 11 © 2016-2017 www.wttrgv.com Thursday, January 5, 2017 2017 All Valley RV and Outdoor Show is Jan. 12-14

You don’t have to be shopping for a new RV or boat to enjoy this year’s All Valley RV and Outdoor Show. Yes, there will be plenty of RVs and boats, but there will be lots more to see at the 2017 All Valley RV and Outdoor Show being held in Mercedes at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Showgrounds Jan. 12-14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 but parking is free. According to Salome Welliver, president of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Texas Recreational Vehicle Association. This year’s show will be better than ever. “A couple of years ago we changed from just concentrating on RVs to having a show that encompasses all sorts of outdoor activities. The show has grown so that it not only attracts Winter Texans, it gets the attention of the local people as well. Last year over 7000 people attended.” See All Valley RV Show pg. 39

Bulls are bigger than ever at Santa Maria Bullring

According to Fred Renk, owner of the Santa Maria Bullring, the bulls to be used in the opening bullfight of the season on Jan. 8, are bigger than any ever used at the Santa Maria Bullring previously. “They are the size of the bulls used in the big bullrings in Mexico and Spain. The fact there is no picador (a rider on a padded horse who places a long stick placed on the bull’s hump to make him bleed a little bit and lower his blood pressure) or banderillas (men who go out on foot and place sticks on bull’s See Santa Maria Bulling pg. 38

Winter Texans enjoy South Padre Polar Bear Dip

By Henry Miller The water temperature was about 65 degrees, there was a light sprinkle when the morning began and a wind up to 15 miles per hour. For many like Gwen and Jer Johnson, it was a day in paradise – celestial like weather for the annual Polar Bear Dip at Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill on South Padre Island. “We had a wonderful time,” Gwen said. “We stayed after the dip, we listened to some music, ate some corn dogs...it was another great experience. Petanque gold medalists prepare for GA Olympics

Lise Lemay, of Pleasant Valley Resort in Mission, tosses her ball while practicing petanque at Pleasant Valley Resort in Mission.

By Henry Miller Claude and Lise Lemay are competitive. Really, really competitive. The husband and wife, who are from Rockland, Ontario, Canada and now live in Pleasant Valley Resort in Mission, are geared up for another busy year at the Golden Age Olympics, which begins on Monday, Jan. 16. The annual competition is run by the City of McAllen and will have more than 30 events held at venues in McAllen, Mission, Pharr, Donna and Harlingen. Last year was a good year for the Lemays. Claude and Lise won the mixed doubles in 8-ball billiards, Lise won the gold medal for Texas Hold ‘em Poker, Claude claimed the bronze medal in cribbage and they paired up again to win the gold medal in petanque. Petanque is the most popular of the Golden Age Olympic sports. Close to 100 three-person teams are expected to sign up for this year’s event, meaning up to 450 Golden Age competitors playing in a game that’s something like a combiSee Petanque Medalist pg. 38

Carpenters Once More brings tour to the RGV For those younger baby boomers who loved the songs of the seventies soft rock duo, The Carpenters, such as “Close to You,” “For All We Know,” or “We’ve Only Just Begun,” Diana Lynn will take guests back in time to when the Carpenters were at the top of the music world. Karen Carpenter was known for her pure, sweet voice when she sang. Though she died in 1983, when Diana sings her songs, it is as if Carpenter was singing them. Carpenter’s song, “Close to You,” is still the number one song chosen for weddings. Lynn has been entertaining audiences since she was three years old. Singing with her brother at a young age, Lynn and he became known as the “Donny and Marie” of Christian music, traveling all around the United States. Lynn took a break from entertaining to raise a family. She worked in sales, marketing, as a magician’s assistant and in nursing but eventually decided to follow her life’s dream of entertaining. She moved to Branson 15 years ago. She has performed as the lead female vocal in a Neil Diamond Tribute all over the United States. She co-starred in the hit production, “Duets,” with her husband and Neil Diamond look-and-sound-alike, Keith Allyn. Lynn is starring in her own award winning live Branson Production, “The Carpenters Once More.” Her show is filled with the duo’s songs. In addition to Car-

penter’s songs, Lynn sings country hits and Christian music. She also sings the songs of Olivia Newton John, Amy Grant, Marie Osmond and Crystal Gayle to name a few. Between songs Lynn pays tribute to Karen Carpenter and gives information about the late singer during the shows. This, along with the costume changes that model the clothes Carpenter wore, make the show special. In Branson “The Carpenters Once More” tribute show was nominated for Show of the Year and Tribute Artist of the Year by Branson Show Awards and was nominated for the Branson-based Terry Music Awards including Best Matinee Show of the Year. Young baby boomers will remember Karen Carpenter singing, “I Need to Be in Love” and “For All We Know,” and many others from the time they were in college or just starting out in the work world. “The Carpenters Once More” can be seen Jan. 5 at Tip O’ Texas RV Resort in Pharr; Jan. 10, Bentsen Grove, Palmview; Jan. 11, Bit O’ Heaven, Donna; Jan. 13, Twin Palms, Rio Hondo; Jan 14, Sleepy Valley, Mission; Jan. 15, Pharr South; Jan. 20, Alamo Country Club; Jan. 21, Border Theater, Mission; and Jan. 26, Schlitterbahn, South Padre Island. On Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. there will be a special show for activity directors only at the Border Theater in Mission.

JANUARY 5, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery.

HAPPY HOUR SPEC MONDAY - FRIDAY 4 - 7 PM

2nd Street Bistro offers variety of buffets and more The 2nd Street Bistro, located inside the Doubletree Hotel on 2nd Street in McAllen offers a wide variety of foods, ranging from themed buffets to specialty dishes. As a Southerner I grew up eating shrimp and grits but had never seen them on any menu in the Rio Grande Valley. I was delighted when I found them on the menu at the 2nd Street Bistro. Manager Fernando Rocha warned me they had a “Texas twist” to them but I ordered them anyway. When they arrived I found four jumbo shrimp stuffed with cream cheese and jalapenos, wrapped in bacon and grilled until the bacon was crispy. They were served on top of grits seasoned with butter and garlic. While a little different from those served in the south, they were absolutely delicious!

Buffet Variety

Wednesday through Sunday the Bistro features buffets. The Mexican buffet on Wednesday features cabrito that is so soft it falls off the bones. All the traditional foods, such as enchiladas, fajitas, guacamole and chips with their special seasoning, tacos, rice and beans are offered for $14.95. BREWS: Friday, there is a special Seafood Buffet that features shrimp tacos, blackened bass, fresh shrimp and other seafood delicacies for $15.95. The Bistro also offers holiday banquets on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. All noon buffets come with soup, salad and dessert bars. A breakfast bar is available each morning on weekdays.

The Bistro features live music from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring local groups. E. J. Colbath, a local favorite, performs Wednesdays and Saturdays. LOCALS In addition to the shrimpCRAFT andB DRAFT grits, look for ahi tuna steaks, bonein ribeye steaks, pork chops, salmon WINE, S COCKTAILS, COSMOS, and many other delicious offerings.

Popular Southern Anthem announces RGV show schedule Wendy, Derek, Mikaela and Logan vocalist. p.m.; Jan.11, VIP La Feria East, Jan. 12

Pauseway, collectively known as Southern Anthem, are returning to the Rio Grande Valley in January to entertain Winter Texans. This family band is known for bringing a fresh sound to long-time country music, bluegrass and gospel favorites. What started with providing interim entertainment at a local theater has taken them on an unimaginable journey. They have performed in churches, auditoriums, fairs and festivals, in Branson, made national television appearances on RFD TV, and had requests to perform from Nashville. Southern Anthem is known for tight harmony and live instrumentation. Mikaela is singer, songwriter and bass player. She has been performing live for over six years and feels right at home on stage. Family bluegrass band, Williamson Branch, new in RGV Family bands are always popular with Winter Texans who are reminded of their grandchildren and enjoy seeing them perform. Williamson Branch, which is new to the Rio Grande Valley, is known for bluegrass music but also plays country and gospel. They also perform clog dancing. Father, Kevin Williamson, who plays rhythm guitar, has been playing music professionally for over 35 years. He worked with bluegrass bands like Duncan & Phoenix, Dave Evans, River Bend and others. He also played and sang with Bill Monroe at a nightclub near Nashville in the 1990’s. Kevin was recently nominated for Bluegrass Entertainer of the Year. He is also a Grammy-nominated songwriter.

Family matriarch, Debbie Williamson, has been entertaining for 20 years and was a founding member of the band, “Shadow Ridge.” She sings lead and harmony and plays mandolin. Melody Williamson, 17, plays fiddle and sings. She’s been performing on stage since she was 2. She also writes music and her original song, “There’s No Country Here,” climbed to number 15 on the independent country radio charts. For the past three years Melody has been one of 20 youths from across the nation to be featured on the International Bluegrass Music Association’s, “Kids on Bluegrass Showcase.” She is also listed in the honorary group, Tomorrow’s Bluegrass Stars. Kadence Williamson, 14, sings harmo-

ny too high for anyone else to sing. She plays ukulele, bass and fiddle. She was also named to the roster of “Tomorrow’ Bluegrass Stars.” Caroline Williamson, 7, plays fiddle, clog dances and sings harmony. She does a sassy Loretta Lynn, singing, “You Ain’t Woman Enough.” She is the banjo play-

er for the group though she has not completely mastered it. She wants to learn mandolin and guitar. The Williamson Branch can be seen Jan. 6 at Bentsen Palm Village, and Jan. 7 at Chimney Park. All shows are at 7 p.m. Call (615) 545-3526 to book Williamson Branch.

Country Pickin’ is ticket to traditional country music

Country Pickin’ is a traditional country music band put together right here in the Rio Grande Valley by long-time professional musician Leland Jones. Jones has performed for over 60 years on stage, and has made recordings out of Nashville. Jones plays a flat-top rhythm guitar and also sings. He performed with many Nashville stars such as Rhonda Vincent, Porter Wagoner and Dottie West. His last venture was the Country Pickin’ Opry in Richmond, Missouri with Lee Roy Van Dyck. Now he is spending his winters in the Rio Grande Valley and has put together a band that plays for dances, happy hours and performs shows. The type of music played varies a bit based on which they are doing. The band he has put together includes Mick Morrow of Michigan on bass, Larry Roberts of Donna on lead guitar, Roger Dean of Iowa on steel guitar, Rich Stanberry of Illinois on drums and, of course, Jones on flat-top guitar. All of the band members also do vocals and all have professional music experience in their backgrounds. Larry Roberts was lead guitar player for the late Jimmy Dicken’s band for several years. This season Country Pickin’ can be

seen at San Juan Gardens on Jan. 14; on Jan. 18 at Road Runner Park, Alamo; Jan. 19, Shrine Club, La Feria, 6 p.m. (meal and show); Jan. 25 at Country Palms, San Juan and Jan. 28 at Koenig’s Resort, Donna. Also look for them on Feb. 1 at San Juan Gardens, Feb. 11, San Juan Gardens, Feb. 20, River Ranch Resort; Feb. 24, Country Palms, Mar. 4, La hacienda and Mar. 11, San Juan Gardens. For bookings or information call Carole Jones and (816) 509-4085.

www.wttrgv.com POLAR BEAR DIP

From The Johnsons come from Waukee, Iowa and just this year decided to become permanent residents, living at River Bend in Brownsville. They’ve been attending the Polar Bear Dip since 1995. The dip is an annual tradition all over the United States and Canada on New Year’s Day. From Vancouver to the Great Lakes to coastal cities on both sides of the countries, thousands of people come out and prepare – mostly for frigid weather – and much, much icier dips than what people get a taste of on South Padre Island, which is widely considered the warmest Polar Bear Dip in the nation.

pg. 1 Johnson knows for a fact, it’s warmer than the first dip she ever took – in Halifax, Nova Scotia. “The temperature was in the 30s, and it was snowing,” she said. “There, you ran in, dipped and came back out with your warm slippers and housecoat ready.” The coldest Polar Bear dip at the Island came in 2010, when waters dipped to 58 degrees. Sunday, the day started out cold and gloomy but as the day wore on, the drizzle faded, the clouds disappeared and the air temperature climbed to the mid 70s – a perfect day, and way, to start the New Year.

“This has become a tradition for us,” said Gwen, adding that each year they wear an extra set of beads around their necks – one set per year that they’ve done the dip. “Whether we are sick or tired, it doesn’t matter – we jump in.” For Diane Coulter and her husband and friends from Sun Valley Village in Harlingen, this was their first Polar Bear Dip. Not only did they drive to the Island to experience the Dip for the first time, but the group even made “pinky swear” promises to make the event a tradition among themselves. “This was a lot of fun,” said Diane, from Winnipeg, Canada. “We jumped in and were able to come out and not have our teeth chattering. Some people said it

was cold but for us; we’re not used to the 100 degree weather in the summers so this weather is great – you can be sitting here at this time of year in your shorts and bare feet.” The lakes are frozen at this time of year in Winnipeg and this year that area experienced the most snowfall in the month of December in more than a century. “We got here in late October and will stay until sometime in April,” Diane said. “It’s just going to get colder in Winnipeg.” Diane said that when she talks to Valley residents who haven’t experienced the extreme cold she and many other Winter See Polar Bear Dip pg. 39

JANUARY 5, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES SANTA MARIA BULLRING From pg. 1

hump to straighten his charge) has sprouted tremendous interest on the Mexican side of the border,” said Renk. “The size of their horns is incredible,” added Renk. The bulls come from the famous ranch of Don Gerardo Martinez, a ranch whose bulls have never been presented before at Santa Maria mainly because of the size of the horns. “The history of these bulls dates back 60 years and is connected to one of the great matadors in Mexican history, the great Manolo Martinez, who is always referred to around the world as Mexicano de Oro, the golden matador,” explained Renk. Facing these bulls will be Leal Montalvo, of Monterrey, who was last season’s triumfador. He will be alternating with Andre Lagravera, who recently returned from a triumphant tour of Spain. He triumped in Seville and in Madrid, the capital of the bullfighting for the European continent. “It is a great privilege to have him perform at the Santa Maria Bullring,” added Renk. Bullfights are always an exciting event. In Hispanic culture the bullfight is considered more like a ballet than a sport

because of the intricate moves the matador must make in order to subdue the bull and bring him to the point of the symbolic kill. But there are bulls that refuse to do the ballet and make the bullfight considerably more dangerous for the matador. Renk tells the story of his last bullfight in Mexico where the bull was so strong it threw the picador and his horse over the protective wall of the bullring. Come out Sunday, Jan. 8, and see whether these bigger bulls can be subdued without picadors and banderillas. Tickets are $30 on the sunny side of the stadium, $35 in the shade and $40 in the covered ringside box seats. They may be purchased at Pepe’s Restaurant, 117 S. 77 Sunshine Strip, Harlingen (956) 4233663; Weslaco Visitor’s Center, 275 Kansas St., (956) 968-2002; Winter Texan Times (cash only, no credit cards accepted), 1217 Conway Ave., Mission, (956) 580-7800; or Border Tire, located at the corner of Bus. 83 and Mayberry Loop in Mission, (956) 585-8473. Reservations can also be made by calling the Bullring at (956) 481-3300. Pay when you arrive.

www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com PETANQUE MEDALIST

From nation of bocce ball and horseshoes and is played on a court preferably out of a very fine – sandlike almost – gravel, even though other surfaces can be used. The court is 4 meters wide by 15 meters long, according to www.playaboule.com. The game originated in France and carried over to Canada. Pleasant Valley has 14 petanque courts and it was Pleasant Valley Ranch that approached the Golden Age Olympics committees about six years ago to add the sport, which has been rising in popularity across the Rio Grande Valley’s Winter Texan resorts. Ironically, the Lemays weren’t introduced to petanque in their native land, but at the Texano Resort in Hidalgo, Texas where they lived for two years before moving to Pleasant Valley. “It’s not just about throwing your ball,” Claude said. “It is a game of strategy. You have to know the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent. That determines how you play.” Two three-player teams compete against each other. Claude and Lise will be joined this year by Pierre Hereux, who replaces Claudette Dion. Each player has two steel balls, most weighing from 650 grams to 800 grams. The balls (officially called boules) also come in different diameters, with different patterns and different hardness levels. The goal is to have the closest ball to the “piggy,” a little red ball that is the first one thrown onto the court. That’s when the first part of strategy comes into play. “Some teams are better when the pig-

pg. 1 gy is far away, others are better when the piggy is close,” Claude said. “Sometimes you want your ball about two feet away, that way the other team can’t hit your ball, without putting it closer to the piggy.” The team with the ball closest to the piggy wins a point. If they have all three balls closer than their competitors’ balls, they earn three points. It takes 13 points to win a game and to win the match a team must win two out of three games. The third person on each team is the captain and usually known as the hitter. That person’s job is often to knock one of the competitor’s balls farther from the piggy. “We used to play three to four times a week in the mornings,” said Lise, who usually is the first thrower for her team. “It’s fun, it’s very social and very competitive. We’ve had 70 to 100 people out here on a morning practicing and playing. Now that we are playing pool twice a week in the morning, we are only playing petanque once or twice a week.” Warning to all other petanque players – don’t let that statement drop your guard. The Lemays plan to defend their petanque title, their billiards title and maybe even more. “I intend to go for the doubles and singles as well as the mixed,” Claude said with a laugh. “I’m very competitive and this is a whole lot of fun.” For information on the Golden Age Olympics registration or calendar of events, visit: http://mcallen.net/parks-recreation/special-events/gao

Payne Motors dealerships will be there with all kinds of outdoor vehicles including the heavy-duty trucks needed to pull fifth wheels or travel trailers. Other booths will include Tupperware, western hats and other items that may be hard to find in the stores. Richard Moore, nature reporter for Channel 23, will be showing one of his new nature films about the Rio Grande Valley.

JANUARY 5, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 39 Welliver said there would be music at POLAR BEAR DIP

two sites. Payne Motors will sponsor one of the stages providing music in their vehicle display area. Come out and spend the entire day because there will be plenty of food. Food vendors will be there with barbecue and tacos. Look for funnel cakes, bloomin’ onions, corn-on-a stick, kettle corn and other popular foods one expects to find at a fair. There will be plenty of fresh lemonade to go along with the sodas for sale. It’s bound to be a fun day looking at the latest in RVs and outdoor recreational equipment.

From pg. 37 visitors have lived with for years, she tells them just to go to HEB and go stand in the meat freezer for a couple of hours and they’ll get a taste – but still not the full experience. She knows too that living in the Valley for a summer with temps at 104 and a heat index that will surpass 110 is nothing they want to deal with either. Gwen and Diane both said they could hear others saying the water was too cold. That wasn’t the case for the Winter Texans in attendance. “You’d have to dig through the ice to get to the water in Winnipeg,” Diane said. “We’re pretty tough with the weather we face, but that’s even too cold for us.”
