The Red Hat Ladies have gone to the dogs!
The Winter Texan Times is sponsoring a contest for Winter Texans to choose their favorite golf course in the Rio Grande Valley. Cast a ballot for your favorite golf course and you may just win the $150 cash prize to be given away. The cash winner will be selected in a random drawing from the names of everyone who casts a vote. See Favorite Golf Course pg. 36

Winners of the Red Hat contest during the Red Hat Ladies’ outing at the Valley Race Park were Kathy Olivarez, Best Hat; and Sheila Durham, Best Dressed. They are pictured with the contest sponsors Margie Peart (left) and Jan Bergman (right).
Shuffleboard still popular with Winter Texans
By Kathy Olivarez The Texas Citrus Fiesta Product Costume Show will take place Saturday, Jan 14, at 2 p.m. at the Mission Community Center, 1420 E. Kika de la Garza Loop. Admission is $5. The 2017 theme is “Cheers to 80 Years” and costumes will reflect past shows themes. Keeping with 80 years See Product Costume Show pg. 40
Winter Texans asked to participate in ‘Life by the Rio’ video contest
The good folks at South Texas Tourism are asking for help from Winter Texans (55 and older) in making a tourism video about good times Winter Texans have in the Rio Grande Valley. Nydia O. By Kathy Olivarez It’s true! The Red Hat ladies have gone to the dogs—the dog races that is! On Jan. 4 approximately 150 Red Hat ladies, many with husbands in tow, spent the day at Valley Race Park in Harlingen watching the live Greyhound races and trying their luck at betting on winners. It was a colorful event with all styles of hats from small flowered bands covered with red and purple flowers to elegant fluffy red hats and everything in between. I opted for a pretty red hat I purchased at the international Red Hat Convention last summer. I almost left it in the car in favor of a warmer one, but decided it would be warm inside. While few of the ladies really understood how to bet, how to pick the dogs for the trifecta or quiniela boxes or what to look at on a dog’s statistics that make it stand out from the others, the ladies See Red Hat Ladies pg. 40
Carol Clem of Pine to Palm Resort Park in Weslaco takes a shot during the finals of the Alamo Palms mixed doubles shuffleboard tournament.
By Henry Miller ALAMO - There are Tampa blocks, St. Pete’s blocks, clutter shots, clear shots, kitchen shots and strategies galore. You use a puck, a disc or a rock – a variety of names for the most crucial instrument in the sport. This is the world of shuffleboard – and if you think it’s easy, or there’s nothing to it, just ask Wally Bentt’s son, a lifetime athlete just in his 40s, who took a shot at shuffleboard during a visit at Leisure World Mobile Home Park in Weslaco. He played a 92-year-old lady. She won handily. “It just shows that there’s something to be said about experience in this sport and strategy,” said Bentt, vice-president and a director of the Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association.
Thirty-three Winter Texan parks and resorts make up the RGVSA. Judy Meaden is president of the Association and says the sport is still among the most popular for the winter residents. Granted, many of the younger Winter Texans now coming to the Valley are favoring some of the newer activities such as pickle ball, petanque and remote control racing rather than shuffleboard as the traditional retirement sport. But to say that shuffleboard has gone by the wayside is nowhere close to a glint of the truth. Meaden said that in the upcoming Golden Age Olympics, shuffleboard will be the most entered sport. The Golden Age Olympics begin Monday, Jan. 16, one day after the McAllen See Shuffleboard pg. 41

Corrected Schedule for Mario Rosales
While writing the story about entertainer Mario Rosales for last week’s paper, our editor accidentally published last year’s schedule of shows. We received a number of phone calls and emails calling the error to our attention after the paper went out last Thursday. Our apologies to Mario Rosales for getting the wrong schedule and to those
who went to the listed locations and found Rosales was not appearing. We contacted Mario to obtain the correct schedule for the remainder of his 2017 appearances in the Valley. The correct 2017 schedule is shown below and now also appears on the Winter Texan Times website at www.wttrgv.com.

Shenandoah singer Billy Droze performs at Border Theatre
On Saturday, Jan. 14, Billy Droze, the former lead will singer of Grammy Award-winning super group Shenandoah, is returning to Texas to perform a special concert for his Winter Texan fans. Droze will give two performances at the Border Theater in Mission at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets are $12. Droze cut his teeth right here in the Rio Grande Valley. Since the age of 13 he has made the trip every year to perform his brand of music. His charismatic live show has been well received here in the Valley. Billy Ryan Droze grew up in Alabama knowing that music was his life as far back as he can remember. “It’s as if I was inserted with a computer chip that made my life revolve around music.” But the reason is just as likely the influence of his father, Bob Droze, a dedicated country, gospel, and bluegrass musician, even now that he’s in his 80s. Billy was on stage with his dad by the time he was 4 years old, and spent his childhood singing with him everywhere from churches to blue-
grass festivals to honky-tonks, developing a passion for traditional country, gospel, and roots music that has influenced him ever since. He learned to play guitar when he was 12, and as a teenager would perform anywhere, anytime, for anyone who would listen, sometimes walking miles down country roads, carrying his guitar, just for the chance to play a few songs. By the time he was 16, Billy’s dad had moved on to Texas, so he followed him and spent a year or so playing with his band. Then after rambling around Texas for a while, he decided it was time to move to Nashville, where he’s lived ever since. Continuing to play anywhere he could, and constantly honing his skills as a songsmith and musician, Billy steadilymexpanded his ever-growing fan base, dramatically increased by several tours singing lead for Grammy-winning Shenandoah (using the name Billy Ryan). In response to a family tragedy and
the need for a change of scenery, Billy decided to expand his horizons by booking a 13-city, nine-country tour of Eastern Europe to promote his third independent album, “Ready for The Ride.” He was extremely well received by fans and reviewers. The tour earned him three #1 singles on the European Hot Disc charts. This tour also led him to Lithuania where he found his soul mate. When he returned to the U.S. it was with his new wife, Marija, whose lovely voice blends perfectly with his, and their sons, Nickie and Timothy. Since his return he has appeared in Country Weekly numerous times, as well as other magazines and on websites in the US and Europe. He has had four major network country music videos. He has a voice so beautiful, earthy and sincere that some say every song gives listeners goosebumps. For more information go to www.billydroze.com.

Daddy D Three take Valley by storm
The Daddy D Three is back for their first full year in the Rio Grande Valley and what an amazing response they have gotten this far. The “Three” Darren Johnson, Bob Balsley and Jeff Hinnendael have about 20 dates including dances and shows throughout the Valley and are looking to add more if a park needs to fill a date.
Leaving 33 degrees in Green Bay, Wisconsin and arriving to a few palm trees and 70 degrees was a welcome change of pace. The guys play 50s and 60s Rock N’ Roll tunes with a mix of comedy and a bit of country. Sit back and listen, or get up and dance to oldies like “That’ll Be the Day,” See DADDY D THREE pg. 26

JANUARY 12, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 21 Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.
Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. Le Peep offers breakfast and lunch specialties Le Peep, located at 7700 N. 10th Street, in McAllen provides some of the best eating for breakfast and lunch to be found anywhere in the Valley. I took the Winter Texan Times Director of Marketing, Norma Reyes, with me on this visit that we both looked forward to with eager anticipation due to the wonderful reputation of Le Peep. The first course for Norma and I was a Gooey Bun, the specialty of the house. It consists of an English muffin covered with brown sugar, cinnamon and toasted almonds. It was a taste of my childhood with the addition of warm toasted almonds, which I love. They even include a serving of cream cheese and “Mom’s” sassy apples on the side. Norma enjoyed it too, especially the toasted almonds, which reminded her of going to the fair as a child. Next I ordered a Crab Cake Benedict, which is an English muffin topped with cream cheese, a crunchy crab cake and eggs topped with Hollandaise sauce. Most people get poached eggs but I chose scrambled. Good Eating! It comes with a serving of peasant potatoes seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic salt and sprinkled with parsley. And more apples! Perfect! Manager Marcos Bazaldua said the most popular Eggs Benedict is the Harvest Benedict with cream cheese, sautéed spinach and veggies. The menu also has a variety of pancakes including the seasonal sweet potato pancake, a chocolate chip pancake, a variety of waffles and toast. Norma mentioned the pancake breakfast with one egg, two mini pancakes and two strips of bacon is her mother’s favorite as she is a light eater. But she opted for the California Turkey sandwich instead of breakfast. It was served on pita bread
with warm lean turkey, bacon strips, melted Swiss cheese, crisp lettuce, tomatoes and avocados. After taking a few bites, she exclaimed, “My mouth is having a fiesta. Every bite has a different flavor!” The sandwich came with a small bowl of chicken tortilla soup that looked so good I was tempted to take it away from her. It had chunks of chicken in a soup base with a good flavor, and crispy chips on it along with chucks of avocado. The restaurant serves a variety of panini’s and other sandwiches to meet everyone’s taste. They do burgers for the diehard that cannot live without them, but the specialty sandwiches are the main feature at lunchtime. Bazaldua said the California Turkey Norma chose is the favorite lunchtime meal of their patrons. It’s a great place to go for a special treat such as a brunch out with the ladies!

Oak Ridge Boys return to Llano Grande Jan. 14-18
The Oak Ridge Boys will once again appear at Llano Grande Resort in Mercedes Jan.14 -18. Their high-energy stage show remains the heart and soul of what they do best. Their performances will feature classic gospel, country and patriotic music. The Oak Ridge Boys have one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry. Their string of hits includes the pop-chart-topper “Elvira,” as well as “Bobbie Sue,” “Dream On,” “Thank God for Kids,” “American Made,” “I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes,” “Fancy Free,” “Gonna Take a Lot of River” and many others. They scored 12 gold, three platinum, one double-platinum album, and one double-platinum single and have had more than a dozen, national number one singles and over 30 Top-Ten hits. Every time they step before an audience, the Oaks bring three decades of charted singles and 50 years of tradition to bear on a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of the Oak Ridge Boys has gar-
nered a host of industry and fan accolades including Grammy, Dove, ACM, and CMA awards. In 2008 they were awarded the coveted Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award. The Oaks have garnered a host of additional industry and fan accolades. Oct. 25, 2015 the Oak Ridge Boys were honored with induction into the elite Country Music Hall of Fame. “I feel like I can do what I do on stage just as good now as I could 20 years ago,” said one of the Oaks, Joe Bonsall. “I plan to be rockin’ my tail off out there as long as I am healthy. The people who come out, who bring their families to see us, deserve everything I’ve got.” Bass singer Richard Sterban added, “I think our stage show is one of the reasons for our continuity. We are still having fun doing this. We love what we do. Getting on stage and bringing music to people is still what we live for.” To purchase tickets call Llano Grande at (956) 565-2228. Tavie Spivey offers lively Rock & Roll show
“Who Put the Bop in the Bop ShooBop?” Tavie Spivey’s Rock & Roll Show is filled with old songs that are seldom heard anymore but when Winter Texans hear her start singing, they go, “Oh, I remember that,” and start singing along. Listen for old songs like “Lollipop,” “Lipstick on Your Collar,” “The Great Pretender,” “Earth Angel,” and many other rock and roll classics. Tavie likes to get people moving by doing songs like “Hand Jive” and “The Hokey Pokey” and the old Charlie Brown song, “Why’s Everybody Always Pickin’ on Me?” The songs Tavie chooses are from Rock & Roll’s “age of innocence” back in the 50s and 60s. “My shows are not just me singing. I like to get the people up and participating,” said Tavie. “I also do dances.” Tavie is an Army veteran with 27 years of administrative service and working as a recruiter. As a result, she always honors veterans in her shows with their branch of the military’s song and songs like “God Bless the USA.” During her military career, Tavie enter-
tained at NCO clubs on weekends all over the United States and in Europe when she was stationed there. Tavie laughs and says, “I always made more money entertaining than I did working in the Army.” She has been heard on oldies radio stations including XM Sirius Channel 5. She has been heard in other English-speaking nations as well. In the early days she sang country music but later decided to make a switch to the oldies because fewer people were doing them. During her career she has had the opportunity to sing with entertainers such as The Coasters, Jimmy Clanton (Venus in Blue Jeans), “The Country Comedy Tour,” and with a nationally acclaimed Elvis Tribute, for NASA’s Columbia Space Shuttle Project and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Tavie’s Rock & Roll show can be seen Jan. 13 at Dream Valley Resort in Mission; Jan 14, Pleasant Valley Resort, Mission; Jan. 15, Sunshine RV Resort, Harlingen; Jan. 16, Eldorado Acres, Palmview; Jan. 17, Tropical Valley Acres, Mission; Jan. 18, Park Place, Harlingen; See TAVIE SPIVEY pg. 40

Gomer & Patsy entertain Winter Texans While many entertainers return to the more popular than Patsy Cline and Gary’s
Rio Grande Valley year after year to entertain, none is more endearing than Gary Crain with his depiction of the loveable character Gomer Pyle who was first appeared on the Andy Griffith Show and then had his own show. Gomer had an innocence about him that Crain has captured that warms our hearts and takes us back to a time when life was simpler. Gary’s character Gomer P. Presley, cousin to Elvis will return this year with a new wardrobe of Elvis-like costumes to entertain during the shows. Gary also does a variety of loveable old TV characters like Mr. Haney from Green Acres and Foster Brooks from the Dean Martin Show and later the Bill Cosby Show and former President Bill Clinton. No singer of the 1950s and 60s was
wife, Patsy, sings many of her songs along with songs of other singers of that era. Patsy sings Cline’s favorite songs like “Crazy” and “Walkin’ After Midnight” but she also sings some of Cline’s less known songs such as “You Took Him Off My Hands.” In addition to Cline, she also sings Nancy Sinatra and Connie Francis. In 2015 Gary Crain was named Comedian of the Year in the Valley Star Awards. The Gary & Patsy Show can be seen Jan. 6 at Winter Green Estates, Mission; Jan. 25 Winter Fest Schitterbahn on South Padre Island at 10 a.m. and Jan. 28, W&I Resort, Mission. To contact the Gary & Patsy Show call (501) 278-7838 or (501) 278-7913 or email garyecrain@yahoo.com.
Senior Ambassadors host TAMU Singing Cadets
Get ready for some great music Thursday, Jan. 12 when the Senior Ambassadors team up with the Texas A&M Singing Cadets for a special concert to be held at 7 p.m. at Center Church (former Trinity Worship Center) located on the southbound feeder road of Expressway 281 and Nolana Loop in Pharr. According to Virgel Kroeker, spokesperson for the Senior Ambassadors, the Singing Cadets will sing a variety of music including patriotic, spirituals, oldies, popu-
lar hits and much more. The Senior Ambassadors will join them in two songs. “It will be sort of like grandpas singing with their grandsons,” said Kroeker. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available from any member of the Senior Ambassadors, or by contacting Mike at jmk448k@yahoo.com. Kroeker recommended getting tickets early as they are expecting a complete sellout of tickets.

JANUARY 12, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES VIDEO CONTEST
From called “Life by the Rio.” The videos submitted should be 45 seconds to one minute in length featuring activities and events Winter Texans enjoy doing around the Rio Grande Valley. They need to be moving images. No mention of private businesses, or wearing of company logos is permitted. Judging criteria is originality and creativity, 40 percent; adherence to the creative assignment, 30 percent and overall appeal, 30 percent. All entries become the property of South Texas Tourism and will not be returned. These videos could showcase a group of golfers on one of the Valley’s more picturesque golf courses along with a statement about why Winter Texans like playing there. Other possible subjects could include the Gladys Porter Zoo or scenes from one of the World Birding Center satellites in the Valley. Don’t forget National Butterfly Center in Mission. Or how about the three National Wildlife Refuges, or the Sabal Palms Sanctuary? Love the beach? Going deep-sea fishing? Take a video of the Laguna Madre or the Gulf of Mexico and show the shells picked up on the shoreline or the fish caught there. Sports fans who are participating in the Golden Age Olympics could take short
pg. 1 videos of the competition taking place in the parks. Square dancing, shuffleboard, jams, quilting, petanque, pickle ball and RC races are just a few of the many Winter Texan activities that could be part of a video. Take some video clips of everyone all dressed up for a special event or at the park dances and be sure to include those bands providing the entertainment. Remember to smile and let folks know how much fun you’re having this winter. Don’t forget your favorite places to eat. Rancho El Charco in La Joya and The Riverside Club in Mission offer scenic settings along the river. There are many others to select from while making video. Enjoy those festivals. The Texas Citrus Fiesta is the last week of January in Mission. Charro Days and Air Fiesta in Brownsville are coming in February. Don’t forget Donna’s Chisolm Trail Festival in February. While the video is to feature Winter Texans having fun at places in the Rio Grande Valley, a few activities in the parks might be included. Submit videos of your favorite entertainers who come from Branson and other locations to entertain Winter Texans. Quilters be sure and submit videos of your quilt shows. While the purpose of this video is to
CHAPMAN DISTRIBUTING

showcase the Rio Grande Valley, be sure to include clips of Winter Texans just having fun, like the guys wearing the coconuts and grass skirts during the Hawaiian Luaus at the parks – or equally zany activities. First prize for the videos will be $200. Second and third place winners will receive a Happy Senior gift basket. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. The winners will be announced in the Winter Texan Times on March 17. Videos will be judged by the South Texas Tourism Board. Participants can enter as many videos as they wish from different
events or locations. Each video should identify the city and location they are filming and tell why the person creating the Valley loves the Rio Grande Valley. E-mail videos to southtexastourism@ gmail.com. Include the full name of the person sending the video as well as physical address, e-mail address and phone number. JANUARY 12, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES RED HAT LADIES
From had fun making small bets and rooting for their dogs. Some did better than others. My friend, Carol Gross, was one of those who did well. Carol’s technique was to pick a dog and make a bet for him to win, place or show in the race. That was a $6 bet. She won $15, a profit of $9. Not bad! Carol had stepped outside where the trainers were lining the dogs up to show and heard them talking saying a certain breeder’s dogs were doing well. Naturally, she bet on that breeder’s dogs when they were in the races. While I did not place a bet, I selected three dogs. Based on a previous experience where I had been told the first two dogs and the outside dog have the best chance of winning I selected dogs one, two for my fictitious bet. I added a dog named Charlie Brown because I once owned a dog by that name. It is a good thing I did not make it up to the betting box because none of my dogs won. Carol’s dog won again, netting her a high profit. On race three, one of the dogs I selected won and Carol won again. Race four turned out to be a disaster! The dogs spilled going around the curve and several dogs were knocked out of the race. Some stood there looking bewildered. One had to be picked up and carried off the track. My favorite was the hurt fellow who went on to finish the race but was limping in at the end. This was the only race Carol did not win. By race five Carol was feeling so confident in her betting skills, she was bet-
pg. 1 ting on two dogs. She chose Katie Elder and Downinahole because she liked their names. They came in first and second place. About that time, I heard some celebrating at a table on the deck below me. Several ladies from Alamo Country Club were sitting there. Sue Yocum had gone to cash in her winning tickets and returned to the table waving $60 in her hand! Her technique was to bet on the dogs whose names she liked. Margie Pert, who was hostess for the event, was also celebrating $28 in winnings. The races continued. Carol continued to win while my dogs consistently lost. Good thing I was only betting in my head! About that time Margie came and told me I had won the contest for the best hat. Sheila Durham in a regal purple dress with jacket and a striking red had won the contest for best dressed. She resembled Queen Elizabeth out on one of her many official visits. Each of us received a box of Belgian chocolates. (Guess that diet can wait another week!) I left feeling pleased that I only bet in my head and still had money in my purse. My box of chocolates was my prize for the day. Except for the spill on four, Carol kept winning up until we left after race eight. Being a bit cagey, she was not saying exactly how much she won. But if I ever go again with Carol, I am going to bet on the same dogs she bet on.

www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com PRODUCT COSTUME SHOW
From of tradition, the costumes created for the show will be covered in citrus and other agricultural products grown in the Rio Grande Valley. Making these costumes is a special skill that was developed in Mission through a period of about 80 years. In the first few years the costumes were all covered in fresh products. They were very heavy and the models often needed help moving them. The second year of the Fiesta the late Lilia Flores Austin wore a skirt made with fresh leaves and produce that weighed more than she did. A special stand on rollers was built into the skirt. She was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for modeling a costume that was heavier than she was. After the show the costumes were put on a train and taken to the Joskeys department store in downtown San Antonio, housed in the old building between the Alamo and Hemisphere Plaza that has an area cut out on one side because there was an existing church unwilling to sell the land for retail. The costumes were displayed in the show windows for one week to call attention to the new Texas Citrus Fiesta in the Rio Grande Valley. Today’s fabric glues work very well but in the past a lot of glues were tried. Not all of them worked. The first costume the author worked on was as a member of a sorority club. We were all novices and bought the wrong kind of glue. The dress was so stiff it stood up by itself. Our model did well because she got high points for modeling. That was because the dress was so stiff she could not put her arms down by her sides and kept a gracious model’s pose the whole time she was on stage. Designers have had many experiences with the products they used. When the theme was Disney, a friend used poinsettias to get the correct color for Mickey’s pants. She quickly found out they turned black after a day or so and she had to keep the pants in the freezer when they were not being modeled so they would not discolor. It is not always easy to get the color needed and a true red is nearly impossible. Different shades of bougainvillea plants offer a variety of most reds and oranges.
pg. 1 Powdered citrus leaves are excellent for a green color. Citrus sawdust can be anywhere from tan to brown depending on how much it is toasted. Yellows and golds can come from citrus peels. Tangerine peels dry well and give a lovely golden color. Burned citrus peel provides a black color. Through the years the ladies making the costumes refined their techniques and today the majority of the products used for the costumes are dried and ground into a fine powder that is sifted on top of a base costume that has been covered in glue. Once the glue has dried, it can be ironed with wax paper to help make sure it does not peel off. Sometimes intricate designs are made from the seeds of many Valley products. Pumpkin seeds are especially useful because they are flat and easily glued. Onion skin can be used to make lace on costumes. Dried banana leaves make a work boot look rugged. Through the years designers have come up with many ideas to create their costumes. The costumes to be presented this year reflect a variety of themes. Because the theme is “Cheers to 80 Years,” the costumes could represent any theme in the previous 79 fiestas. In the Elementary Division, “Glitz and Glamour,” an 80’s theme, will celebrate the Barbie doll. In the Teen Division one costume will represent the 1969 theme “Fiesta of Adventure.” Another costume will represent the 1966 theme “Fiesta of Fun and Flowers.” Two adult costumes will represent the 1985 “Citrus by the Sea” theme and the 2016 theme “Citrus Cartoons and Comic Book Characters.” In the Hat Division there are three hats based on different themes. One will represent the 1972 “Fantasy Citrus Fiesta” while another will represent a new sheriff from the 2015 theme, “Western Glitz and Glamour.” Tickets for the Product Costume Show may be purchased in advance at the Texas Citrus Fiesta office located at 220 E. 9th Street, Mission, or at the door the day of the event.

SHUFFLEBOARD
From Marathon. The sport, created in Florida and extremely popular on cruise ships, is still played by more parks and individuals than any other, Bentt said. And the competitive spirit is strong. Red and Wilma Rudolph out of Aladdin Villas won a recent mixed doubles tournament at Alamo Palms Park. Dave and Kathy Lamphere of Pine to Palm Park finished second while Earl Doell and Carol Klem, also of Pine to Palm Park, took third. On the final day of competition, the stands were filled with spectators. Many of them had competed earlier in the week and were there to watch friends and family on the final day. Many were there just because it was another event where they could gather and spend time with one another. That’s the biggest reason to play the sport, according to Meaden and Bentt. “Everyone loves the camaraderie more than anything. You’re getting outdoors, you’re catching up with friends and having a fun time,” Bentt said. “But there’s still some friendly competition all the time.” Players collect lifetime points and it takes 100 points to move from amateur status to expert status. Twenty-five points are earned for taking first place in the expert division and points are distributed to the top three in each tournament. But, it’s not as easy as it sounds to earn those points. Tournaments will have 70 or more teams and many players have been competing for years and are still in search of a few more points. Of course, others are just happy to be in the amateur/consolation division where they can just have fun – and not worry about a quick exit from a tournament from facing someone with 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000 lifetime points. Wilma Rudolph is the ladies lifetime point leader with 2,412, almost 1,000 points ahead of the second-place player and nearly double that of third. Bill Piette has 2,162 lifetime points to lead the men’s side and Red Rudolph is second with 2,125. “There are some people out here who are playing five or six times a week— playing or practicing,” Bentt said. “The points aren’t a major emphasis but many of them like to collect them and have done
pg. 1 very well. This is all about making friends and spending time doing things together.” Bentt will be honored at the end of the year banquet this year for his lifetime points and, most importantly, for his volunteer work and service to the association and the sport. While there are nearly three dozen parks that make up the association, other parks can join at any time. Many of the parks involved in the association are in the mid-Valley area but parks all across the Rio Grande Valley may compete within their own park or in their local vicinity. Meaden said it doesn’t matter where they were from, they just need to apply and they are in. Residents who are at a park that isn’t a member must go through their activity director to join. The tournament schedule runs through the beginning of March and concludes with the Texas State National Singles tournament at Fun ‘N Sun RV Resort in San Benito. A TSSA National event means anyone from anywhere in the United State who is an association member can compete in the event. For more information on the RGVSA, call Judy Meaden at (715) 571-7866 or Wally Bentt at (780) 690-5004 or visit www.rgvsa.weebly.com. Below is the remaining schedule of events for the 201617 Rio Grande Valley Shuffleboard Association, including date of the event, place, and type of event: Jan 17, 18, 19, Trails End – Mixed Doubles Jan 24, 25, 26, Magic Valley – Doubles Jan 31, Feb 1, 2, Southern Comfort – Mixed Doubles Feb 7, 8, 9, Llano Grande – Mixed Doubles Feb 14, 15, 16, Ranchero Village – Mixed Doubles Feb 23, 24, Snow to Sun – TSSA Tournament of Champions Singles Feb 28, Mar 1, 2, Casa del Sol – Mixed Doubles Mar 7, 8, Llano Grande Non Trophy Winners – Singles Mar 7, 8, 9, Fun ‘N Sun – Russ Jacobsen 75 & over Singles Mar 14, 15, 16, Fun ‘N Sun – TSSA National Singles

Senior Softball is a great way to have fun, meet some terrific guys and a few gals, plus get some exercise at the same time, said Ed Martens, one of the local league’s organizers. The ball players in the Senior Slow Pitch Softball League come from 27 states and all Canadian provinces as well as some local players. Most are Winter Texans representing 31 different RV parks in the area. Last season (Nov. to Feb.) over 175 players enjoyed playing senior softball on Monday and Wednesday mornings or on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The ball field is located at Westside Park on Ware Road in McAllen, approximately one-fourth mile north of Expressway 83. Players start at age 55 and go to over 90 years young. These players just finished their “spring training,” in November and December in the Rio Grande Valley. The
ball game season runs in January and February and ends up around March 1 with the U.S./Canada games. Approximately 300 ball fans with flags from Canada and the United States, armed with noisemakers to celebrate their team’s successes, come out to root for the players from their countries. The winter ball season stated Jan. 2 but it is not too late to join the league. There are openings in all three divisions. Chairman Ed Martens’ job is to get each player placed in the correct division so he or she will play with people of equal abilities. The divisions are based on ages and physical abilities of the players and are designed to see that everyone can play up to his full ability. All Winter Texans and locals are welcome. Please contact Ed Martens at (956) 581-2254 for more information.
