Andre Lagravere, the 17-year-old son of the great French matador de toros Andre Lagravere Sr., performed Jan. 8 in the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria, Texas taking all the honors and awards. After being brutally tossed by the bull who shredded his beautiful suit of lights, and being attended by the ambulance medics, he returned to the ring with taped mid-section and proceeded to face the last bull of the day. His desire was relentless as he forced the bull to comply with his cape demands, passing the bull with five to six series on each side. He then went to adorning passes that would end up with him kneeling in front of the bull touching his horn. The fans went crazy with a constant roar of “Ole!” said Fred Renk, owner of Santa Maria Bullring. He would then continue as if driven by a higher power, Renk said. Passing the See MATADOR pg. 40
Teenage matador Andre Lagravere thrilled the crowd at Santa Maria Bullring Jan. 8 as he returned to the ring after being brutally tossed by a bull, shredding his suit of lights. Notice the bandages around his mid-section.

Tribute to Bob Wills
Anyone who loved the traditional country music of the late Bob Wills will want to participate in the tribute to Bob Wills Friday, Jan. 27, at Paradise Resort Estates in Pharr. Reserve tickets are $10 and general admission is $8. Wills was an American Western Swing musician often referred to as the “King of Western Swing.” He formed his band The Texas Playboys, in 1934. The band played on the radio in Oklahoma. In the 1940s he had hits like “Steel Guitar Rag,” “New San Antonio Rose,” “Smoke on the Water,” and “Stars and Stripes in Iwo Jima.” In the 1950s his greatest hit was “Faded Love.” He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968. Many of today’s Winter Texan performers grew up listening to his music and often idolized him. Bob Dolle and the Hall of Fame Variety Band will be the hosts of the event.
The band consists of Bob Dolle on keyboard and fiddle, Odie James on drums, Joe Walenta on guitar and vocals, Fred King on guitar and vocals and Lefty Schrage on steel guitar. Among those who will also perform at the tribute are Red Arwood, Wade Benson Landry, and Del Puschert. Bob Dolle and the Hall of Fame Variety Band can be seen Friday, Jan. 20, at Pharr South for a show and dance. They will be at Alamo Rec., Jan 24, dance; See TRIBUTE pg. 36

Redhead Express tours RGV RGV Winter Texans are in for a real treat when The Redhead Express rolls into town to perform three engagements this season. Many Winter Texans enjoyed watching this talented family band grow up performing at the area resorts as they started their career, which has skyrocketed as these four sisters cultivated their talent over the past eight years. Now they’re returning briefly to entertain the people who loved them as they grew up. They are best known for their exquisite harmonies, thought provoking lyrics, and melodies that take you away. Spend an evening in concert with the Redhead Express and you will be captivated by their sound, their realness, their passion and, most importantly, their heart. Now young women, Kendra, Larae, Alisa and Meghan now live and work in Nashville. They were based in Alaska when they first came to the Valley. Kendra is the singer/songwriter and guitar player for the Redhead Express. She grew up loving country music, 80’s pop-rock bands and Broadway musicals. She sang jazz in high school and learned to play guitar on bluegrass music. Her biggest influences were Eva Cassidy, Alison Krauss and the Dixie Chicks. Larae, the second sister, enjoys 70’s and 80’s pop music, Dixie Chicks, Celine
Dion and the banjo music of Keith Urban, Bela, Fleck and Earl Scruggs. Alisa, the third sister, is the fiddle players, mandolinist and low harmony singer. She is inspired by Nickel Creek, Stuart Duncan, the Dixie Chicks, and Alison Krauss. Meghan, the youngest sister, plays the bass violin and sings high harmony and some lead. She is inspired by Dixie Chicks, Marina McBride, Journey and Billy Joel. Redhead Express has opened for Sammy Kershaw, Parmalee, Clay Walker, Chris Young, Chris Lane, Bea Miller, Trace Adkins and others. The Redhead Express will make whistle stops at three locations in the Valley to renew acquaintances and friendships with Winter Texans before they head to ArizoSee REDHEAD pg. 36

JANUARY 19, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 21 Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, January 21, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. items. The sauces, meats and vegetables are cooked there in the restaurant from scratch. We started our meal with the new Kickin’ shrimp appetizer of dusted fried shrimp served with black sesame seeds and a spicy Asian sauce. We also had the onion loaf, another favorite appetizer. And of course we had the traditional French bread with garlic butter sauce. In addition to ribs, the restaurant also serves other top-quality meats. The most popular is three medallion filets with a variety of toppings to go on them. Toppings include wild mushroom sauce, a cabernet Demi-glace, and Bourbon barbecued onions. Or try an Asiago cheese crust. For a salad, I chose the bleu cheese wedge of crispy iceberg lettuce, bleu cheese dressing and crumbles, red onions and a tomato pesto sauce. The pesto sauce
most bleu cheese wedges. For his entrée Oscar from the advertising department took the three medallion filets with loaded mashed potatoes and broccoli and they were gone almost before I got a good look at them. For those who prefer seafood, Tony Roma’s signature seafood dish is a wild-caught salmon filet served in a shrimp and salmon piccata with rice and a veggie of choice. It was excellent. Norma selected the new “Not Your Mama’s Chicken,” two fiveounce chicken breast sitting on a bed of mashed potatoes with a side of baby carrots, parsnips and butternut squash. She loved it. Add a holiday dessert of bread pudding seasoned with holiday spices and a sprinkling of chocolate chips and it is a meal fit for a king! Come on out to Tony Roma’s and enjoy a wonderful meal. Whether it’s one of your old, reliable favorites, or to try out one of their delicious new entrees, you’re in for a great dining experience.

Entertainers showcase highlights new and old performers By Kathy Olivarez Each year activity directors look forward to the two entertainment showcases where they get a preview of the new entertainers coming to the Rio Grande Valley to perform during Winter Texan season. The first showcase of the season was held at Park Place in Harlingen Jan. 11, where was a full line-up of entertainers vying to entertain in the parks. The Winter Texan Times took an informal survey of activity directors starting during the noon hour, asking them which entertainers they liked in the morning hours. We also got feedback from some of the activity directors on the afternoon entertainers. Some of those we spoke to still liked entertainers from the morning hours best. Our informal poll revealed that the most popular performers at the Showcase was the Williamson Branch. It seems the girls stole the show because there were comments like, “I liked to see those little girls dance,” and “That little girl who was fighting with her older sister over a potential boyfriend, while singing, “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man,” was funny. Her antics had the audience in gales of laughter. A close second was Helen Russell &
Company. “Like that gal in the glittery top,” one man said. “Her music was upbeat and her comedy routines were funny.” She also plays a lively five-string banjo during the show. Although not new to the Valley this year, Bill Chrastil ranked a close third in our informal poll. His audition included songs like “Ring of Fire,” from Johnny Cash, “On the Road Again,” by Willie Nelson, “Sweet Caroline” by Tom Jones, and of course, his signature Elvis song, “Don’t Be Cruel.” Other favorites for the day included J. C. Harrison and Lindley Creek. J.C. Harrison won over the audience with his traditional country songs like “Luckenbach, Texas,” and Hank Williams old songs. Lindley Creek garnered much attention with “Jolene,” “The Little Dipper,” and “Orange Blossom Special.” There were rounds of applause when Jase and Katie did a little cross playing on each other’s fiddles. Another new performer, William Florian, was very popular with his uplifting music and tribute to the late John Denver. In the afternoon, Daddy D 3, a new See SHOWCASE pg. 32

edge and expertise with others. Many of the members started carving when they were kids, while others became involved after the retired to the Valley. Some of the members are carving instructors, while others are just learning all about the world of carving. Members are interested in other related skills such as pyrography (wood burning). Egg carving, antlers, stone, plastic and glass. Painting techniques include oil and acrylics with brushes and pencils, or airbrushing. Some members are sculpting with clay on
armatures made with wood and metal. A few people are involved with intarsia – making pictures or animals with different colored pieces of wood. Woodcarvers Rally on the Rio Wanting to offer more than just a fabulous woodcarving show each year, the RGV Woodcarvers have now been hosting Rally on the Rio for almost 20 years, bringing together carving instructors from around the country to put on a woodcarving seminar for Rio Grande Valley residents and Winter Texans alike. The 2017 Rally on the Rio will take place Jan. 23 through Sat., Jan. 28, also at Cielo Banquet Hall. The Rally

oldies rock group, had the audience tapping toes with “Whole Lotta Shakin” going on and they received applause for “Time Goes by So Slowly.” Jonathan Edwards, grandson of the late and great Lloyd Kramer blew the audience back to the past with his grandfather’s music like “Last Date.” Edwards told the audience his grandfather could also be heard playing on the sound tracks of “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Georgia,” and “San Antonio Rose.” While many had left before the last band of the day, Rewind did a great job of catching the attention of the activity directors with songs like, “La Bamba,” “Sweet Caroline,” and “Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.” Had they not been the last act of the day, they probably would have received more attention. This survey was an informal one and does not mean there were no other good performers. There were several that got a number of votes as one of the activity directors’ favorite groups and had a number of bookings. So, it’s looking like next season will bring some great talent performing in the RGV resorts. So, look forward to having a great time.
Due to death in the family, we will not be able to attend either entertainer’s showcase this January. We will, however, be available for booking for Christmas, Country Variety, and Gospel Shows for next winter between Nov 20 thru March 31. Swing your partners with Joe Saltel
By Kathy Olivarez “Do-si-do…Move to the middle and turn the girl! Promenade around the world.” If the words seem familiar it’s because they’re calls for square dancing. Square dancing is not just a bunch of ladies moving around the floor swinging frilly skirts and petticoats; it can be vigorous exercise both physically and mentally as dancers strive to master the calls. For many years the Rio Grande Valley has been considered to be “the square dance capital of the world” because there were so many callers and dancers here in the winter. While there are fewer today than in past years, square dancing is still very much alive in the Rio Grande Valley. Joe Saltel is one of several callers located in the Valley. He teaches basic lessons to beginners and expands their skills through more advanced classes as they become adept at following the calls. For those who would like to learn to square dance, Saltel will be teaching beginning lessons on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. at Tropic Star’s Ballroom, 141 S. Cage Blvd. in Pharr, and will run from Jan. 8 to March 12. Saltel’s introduction to square dance calling came at the age of 8, when his grandfather assisted him in learning his first few singing calls. Saltel has been actively calling and teaching Basic through Advanced 2 since 1971, and more recent-
ly Challenge-1. The categories are designations in square dancing developed by CALLERLAB, the international association of modern Western square dance callers, and is the largest square dance association in the United States. Under the system the number of calls, or dancer commands, increases with the next higher step in the categories. Challenge 3A, the highest category, contains up to 429 calls and concepts. Saltel is a member of Callerlab and is licensed by BMI, the largest music rights association in the U.S., and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Saltel has been a featured caller for many festivals, conventions, and special dances in over 40 states including Alaska and Hawaii. He’s also worked in Canada, Denmark, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Sweden. As a recording artist, his voice can be heard on the Alliance, Blue Star, Chic, Chinook, DJ, Dance Ranch, Hi-Hat, Riverboat, Royal, SDBob Recordings, and Silver Sounds labels, as well as many CDs and cassettes. Saltel is also a member of the Screen Actor’s Guild and choreographed and appeared in a made-for-TV movie, “Blue Skies.” Saltel and his wife, Chris, married in 1982 and have led ten successful tours/ cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and Mexico including the cities of Puerto Vallarta and Cancun. Chris held a manage-

In 2001, they relocated from their home on the Northern California coast and now live full-time in the Rio Grande Valley. Their daughter, Tanya, traveled and called onstage with her dad and has appeared on some of his CDs. She is now 33 years old and mother to her own two-year-old daughter. Saltel and Chris spend November through April running a full square dance program at the Tropic Star RV Resort. The remaining months they tour and travel domestically and internationally to call at festivals and special dances. They frequently visit their daughter and granddaughter, Shania. Saltel enjoys what he calls his vocation and avocation, and feels fortunate to be part of this great activity. He loves teaching square dancing. Following the beginner lessons on Sundays at the Tropic Star there will be a Mainstream Dance at 7 p.m. On Tuesdays at 10 a.m. an A-2

Sherwin Linton: 61 years Family Medical Center and no missed performances Now Accepting New Patients One of the longtime great performers in the Rio Grande Valley is Sherwin Linton who in his 61 years of entertaining, has never missed a single performance. He sings the songs of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Marty Robbins, Chuck Berry, and Buddy Holly. He can sing over 5,000 songs. Sherwin got started early as an entertainer when he had his own radio show on KWAT in Watertown, South Dakota. He and his band, The Rocketeers, were soon in demand all over South Dakota. In 1957 he moved to Minnesota and started a new band, The Fender Benders. The band was popular from Minnesota to the west coast and he soon had several Rock-a-Billy releases. In 1966 he traveled to Nashville to cut “Cotton King,” a song that put him at the top of the Country Music Charts. In 1975 his song, “When She Cries” won an award for single of the year. In 1986 he wrote and recorded, “Santa Got a DWI,” which is a Christmas perennial. See SHERWIN LINTON pg. 36

Lagravere will be back for the next bullfight this weekend, Sunday, Jan. 22. Appearing with him is San Luis Potosi, Mexico matador Joselito Sainz, another dynamic young matador. He has a tremendous background as well. This will be his debut at the Santa Maria Bullring. The bulls are again of enormous size, Renk said. Tickets are available by calling the bullring for reservations at 1-956-481-3300. They are also on sale at Pepe’s Restaurant in Harlingen, 117 S. Sunshine Strip, call
