Highly talented Dave & Daphne coming to town

Get ready for a great show filled with talented guitar playing and the voice of an angel. (Daphne’s voice, not Dave’s.) Dave & Daphne are returning to the Rio Grande Valley in this month. Dave, who was lead guitarist for Barbara Mandell for seven years, was declared by Roy Clark to be “one of the most fabulous guitarists on the planet.” Dave makes songs like “Orange Blossom Special” and “Flight of the Bumblebee,” which are both difficult to play, look like child’s play. In addition to his skills as a guitarist, he is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter and humorist. Daphne, whose father fondly referred to her as “The Mouth of the South,” has one of the greatest voices ever heard in the Rio Grande Valley—or anywhere else for that matter. She toured with the Gaither’s, one of the best-known gospel groups ever. She sang with the Florida Boys, the Cathedrals, Rex Nelon, the Hinsons, and many others. She was voted Female of the Year by the Southern Gospel Music Association. Daphne’s voice has been referred to as a cross between Shania Twain and Patsy Cline and she is able to sing almost any kind of music. She also yodels like Patsy Montana. Her version of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” sends

Dave & Daphne chills down the spine of the listener. Her renditions of “Amazing Grace” and “The Lord’s Prayer” are incredible. Both Dave and Daphne give God credit for the enormous talent he gave them. They are truly two of the most talented entertainers to perform in the Rio Grande Valley and should not be missed. Dave & Daphne can be seen Feb. 12 at Citrus Valley Resort in McAllen at 2 p.m.; Feb. 12, Big Valley RV Resort, Donna; Feb. 13, Hidden Valley Resort, Mission; Feb.14, Oleander Acres, Mission; Feb. 15, VIP La Feria; Feb. 19, Pharr South Resort, Pharr, 6:30 p.m.; Feb. 21, Alamo Rose; Feb. 22, Winter Haven: Feb. 24, Rio Valley Estates; and Feb. 25, Sunshine RV Resort, Harlingen.

WT’s favorite duet Gordy & Debbie to perform

Five time winners of Valley Star Award’s Duet Musical Group of the Year, Gordy & Debbie have returned to the Rio Grande Valley for the month of February. These Branson performers have long been favorites with Winter Texans. Gordy & Debbie sing all the country favorites from the 50s and 60s and Gordy often does tributes to George Strait. They also add a bit of comedy to their routines. The combination has made them popular with senior citizens everywhere as they now travel to Florida and Arizona as well as the Rio Grande Valley. Gordy grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he began singing in the church choir when he was 13 years old and he has been singing ever since. He sang in the gospel quartet 3rd Generation for seven years. Some of their music was played on national gospel radio. In 2005 he competed in the Colgate Country Showdown and won the local competition and then placed second in the Missouri State Competition. That same year he entered Doug Gabriel’s Branson Idol competition where he also placed second. Gordy moved to Branson in 2005 where he began performing at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner as a singing server. Also in 2005 he met

Debbie Kaye. They married in the dining room of Mel’s Hard Luck Diner in 2006. Debbie Kaye grew up in Kimball, South Dakota where she found her love of music. As a teen she worked waiting tables in the family-owned truck stop where all the stars stopped on their way across South Dakota. She dreamed of becoming a country star. Debbie studied music education at South Dakota University but decided she would rather sing than teach. She moved to Clear Lake, Iowa and formed the Debbie Kaye Band. She opened for Bobby Vee and headlined several times at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake where Buddy Holly’s last concert was held. She moved to Branson in 1994 and performed in the Showboat Branson Belles Show and in The Pump Boys and Dinette Show. She spent 11 years at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner as a singing server. When the couple is not performing in shows in Branson, they spend the off-season working at local resorts and doing numerous road shows each year. Leslie Blasing Show delights audiences

By Kathy Olivarez Those who have not seen one of Leslie Blasing’s shows are missing out on a great performer. There is good reason she has been selected as Female Vocalist of the Year every year from 2013 to 2016 and Entertainer of the Year 2014-2016 at the Valley Star Awards presentations. Leslie has a rich contra-alto voice with great vibrato and a virtual encyclopedia of songs spanning six decades. She knows almost all the songs that have come out since the war years of the 1940s. Unlike many of the entertainers who come to Winter Texan resorts across the Valley from Branson or Nashville or other locations, Leslie is homegrown. Well almost. She tells audiences that she came to the Valley for a three-week gig 24 years ago and is still here. She grew up in Hondo, Texas, where she was encouraged to sing by the high school principal. She was discovered by Winter Texans and other Winter Texan entertainers who encouraged her to get out and sing in the resorts. She started a recent show at Wintergreen Estates with an old favorite country song by Loretta Lynn, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Then she moved to an oldie, “My Little Runaway.” Just as quickly she

moved to the 80s and Anne Murray, a favorite Canadian singer with “Fly Away.” Then it was back to the 1940s with a lively “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Then it was back to the 50s or 60s oldies with “Johnny B. Goode.” After singing, Patsy Cline’s “Tell Me Now” she asked for audience participation on “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” Then it was on to Freddie Fender and “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” She livened things up with Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be the Day” and Sammi Smith’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night. She changed some of George Strait’s lyrics saying “All my execs Wear Rolexes,” and “I’m alive and well on South Padre Island.” She told tales of her days in San Antonio where she met the likes of Sammi Smith, who had an amazing voice range, and Reba McIntyre and Dolly Parton who offered to help her advance in her career. But once she arrived at South Padre Island, she decided she was home. After singing at the Sheraton for eight years, she moved to Schlitterbahn for another 10 years. She loves to sing and is amazed that people will pay her to do what she loves. “I feel blessed every night when I sing,” she tells the audience.

She cut up by singing a Willie Nelson song with a clip on her nose to get his special sound. She swayed back and forth while singing Ray Charles. Singing “Seven Spanish Angels,” she switched from character to character. After break she asked for requests from the audience. There were no requests she did not know. She asked the audience to sing along on most of the requests. The audience happily sang along as she took them on a trip down memory lane. Leslie can be seen on Saturdays and Sundays between 1 and 4 p.m. at Boomerang Billy’s on South Padre Island. On Tuesdays look for her at Louie’s Backyard from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays she sings at Palm Street Pier on the island from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays she can be found at the Coral Reef from 1 to 3 p.m. In addition, Leslie will perform Feb. 7 “History of Rock-n-Roll Show” at the SPI Convention Center. Tickets are $8-$12. Feb. 8 she’ll be at La Hacienda Estates, Alamo; Feb. 19, Valley View Estates, Mission; and Feb. 23, Tropic Winds, Harlingen. Leslie will present a special show, “The Music of the Time WWII and 40’s Era Popular Songs at Victoria Palms Ballroom Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Presale tickets are

$10 and at the door $12. Call (956) 7823263 for tickets. Leslie will be in the Isla Grande Ballroom on Valentine’s Day. Tickets are $35 for singles or $60 for couples with a dinner buffet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Music from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. She has been nominated once again for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Valley Star Awards to be held Feb.18 at Mission Bell.

FEBRUARY 2, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 17 Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. When you register, you can bring a guest at no additional cost (we do this because many people request to bring their spouse or other family member).

Big Daddy’s is the place for wonderful burgers!

Just think about those BIG, JUICY hamburgers made from fresh, never frozen, ground meat, topped with a whole arsenal of delicious toppings and seasonings to delight your taste buds and definitely satisfy your tummy. Big Daddy’s Burgers is the best place to go for that “gourmet burger experience” without paying an arm and a leg for top quality. Each burger has at least a three-quarter pound patty of fresh meat. You are not going to go home hungry! Some selections even offer two or three patties of meat for those with a big appetite. For those with a smaller appetite, the Lil’ Daddy Burger has one patty. If you’re good and hungry, the Daddy Jr. Burger has two patties and the Big Daddy has three patties. They are served with big, thick French fries.

They also come in all sorts of flavors, – some quite unusual. There is the Frito Pie Burger covered with chili con carne, or the chori-queso burger with cheese and chorizo. Look for the Mexican Burger with cheddar cheese and avocado. Try the Swiss Burger with mushrooms, and Swiss cheese or try a Bacon Mushroom Burger. If you like things spicy, go for the firecracker burger covered in hot Cheetos for a fiery tasting burger. Want something different? Big Daddy offers an awesome Philly Steak Sandwich made with shredded rib eye meat. Or go for Da Chicken Burger made with juicy tender chicken breast. For extra sides, there are all flavors of chicken wings; some with barbecue sauces, garlic, and Parmesan to name a few. Their customers’ favorite starters are the stuffed

mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese sticks. Or go for the nachos! Oscar, a Winter Texan Times sales representative, and I started with chicken wings which were crispy and tasty. He chose garlic while I chose Parmesan. Both were delicious! Oscar selected the Mexican Burger, which he said was juicy and delicious, a definite cut above those frozen hamburger patties found in fast food restaurants. I ordered a chicken salad, made for those with smaller appetites. It was made with iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, croutons, and delicious strips of fresh, never frozen, chicken breasts. It was very fresh and it was obvious the chicken was freshly prepared. Big Daddy’s has two locations. One is at 5818 N. Cage Blvd. in Pharr. Exit SH 281 on the Nolana exit and the restaurant is just past the AEP building. In McAllen they are located at 100 S. Bicentennial Blvd.

From “We have a guild of over 300 members,” Jacobson said. “Most of them have been quilting since they were little girls. There’s a few of us who waited until we retired to start quilting, and I’m one of them.” Jacobson, who has been quilting since 2014, is also the treasurer for the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild. The expo also featured an area where many items were for sale, including pincushions, quilts, and other sewing supplies. Each day also had a silent auction featuring miniature quilts donated to the guild. The proceeds made at the show go back to the guild, so those programs can be offered. The Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild meets once a month in Weslaco. “It’s all for education, more than any-

thing else,” Jacobson said. “We educate each other, and we educate the kids.” There were 11 categories that participants in the expo competed in: wall hangings, crib, lap, twin, full, queen, king, apparel/personal accessories, home décor, art, and the Beatles challenge. The Best of Show award, which was awarded to “Bed of Roses,” voted best overall, went to Kathleen Dombi. The guild also held presentations of Military Service Quilts, made by the group, for veterans and those in active duty for the U.S. Military. Each one is made with a service member in mind. Deborah Blackbourn, who is a co-chair of the Military Service Quilts program in the guild, got involved in the program four years ago. “There are over 100,000 veterans in the Valley,” Blackbourn said. “So we decided that those who receive one from us needs to be a full-time resident of the Valley. They can’t be a Winter Texan.” The Military Service Quilt section of the expo featured forms to nominate a veteran or someone under active duty to receive a quilt from the guild, which is also available online. “We do the presentations everywhere, at halls, hospitals, veteran’s homes, birthday parties, anniversaries, even happy hour,” Blackbourn said. “We’ve done several here at the expo as well.” Blackbourn spoke about the feelings and responses to the presentation of a mil-

itary service quilt. “People get really emotional,” Blackbourn said. “Just now after this many years I can barely make it through a presentation without getting choked up.” Blackbourn said that she started doing this work in remembrance for her father, father-in-law, and her husband’s uncle. “It’s just been a passion,” Blackbourn said. “We’ve met so many nice people, and there are so many people out there who are so deserving.” Blackbourn still keeps and uses a quilt made by her grandmother from pieces of her mother’s dresses as a child. She said she loves how much meaning is behind it, and Jacobson agreed. “Quilts mean love, always,” Jacobson said. “The more it’s loved, the better it is.” When speaking about the different techniques that go into each quilt, Jacobson reflected on the longstanding custom of quilting and its impact. “There’s an amazing amount of history with quilts,” Jacobson said. “And’s it’s mostly the women who make it so. And you’re only limited by your imagination.” 2017 RGV Quilt Guild Show Winners Best of Show Kathleen Dombi Beatles Challenge 1st – Kathleen Dombi See QUILT SHOW pg. 38

Terry Smith: A songwriter/ singer with a different touch Terry Smith, a versatile songwriter who has written songs for a wide range of audiences, will be performing at the Border Theater and at a limited number of parks and resorts during his brief tour in the RGV this month. He says without exaggeration, “I’ve pitched songs to everyone from the country artists of the day to the Texas Rangers baseball team and Captain Kangaroo.” Many a “full-time songwriter” has a smaller catalogue than Terry, whose file cabinet holds over 2,000 songs, “the good, the bad, and the ugly,” as he sums them up. As a singer, Terry has steadily built a following over the years in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. For 30 years, Smith, who was born in Cordell, Okla. and reared in Denton, Texas, taught English and coached baseball in public school systems in Texas and Tennessee. After retiring from teaching, Terry began to pursue in earnest his love of songwriting and singing country music. His first album was a country gospel project, “Look at My Hands” in 1979, which features his initial version of “Far

Side Banks of Jordan,” a song featured twice in the movie “The Apostle” and included on the film’s soundtrack CD. The song was heard in its entirety at the close of “Ring of Fire,” a TV movie based on the life of June Carter Cash debuted in the spring of 2013. “Jordan” has been recorded close to 300 times by many different artists, including Ernie Ashworth of Grand Ole Opry fame, as well as the Statler Brothers on their album “Amen.” In the spring of 1999 June Carter Cash released “Press On,” her first solo album in over 24 years, on which she and Johnny Cash re-recorded “Far Side Banks of Jordan.” “Press On” won a Grammy in 2,000. Terry has written songs that were recorded by wellknown country music artists such as Kitty Wells, Chris LeDoux, The Oak Ridge Boys, Daniel O’Donnell, Kris Kristofferson, Patty Loveless, George Hamilton IV, Allison Krauss, Roy Acuff, Jimmy Fortune, and many more. Terry is a member of the Traditional Country Music Hall of Fame and was voted Traditional Music Association’s Songwriter of the Year in 1995 and 1996. See TERRY SMITH pg. 39

www.wttrgv.com TERRY SMITH

From pg. 38 Smith has released thirteen albums to date. His newest project, “The Second Time Around,” was recorded in January 2015, and includes fifteen of Terry’s songs first cut by other artists. Many of Terry’s fans anxiously await Terry’s next CD offering, having purchased each one. One of Terry’s popular CD’s, cut in 2001, is entitled “Spokes in The Wheel,” an album that focuses on the various kinds of songs Terry writes including ballads, novelty, honkytonk, story songs, inspirational, and gospel. As Terry says, “Just as a spoke is only one part of a wheel, each of my musical and personal influences contribute to who I am as a person. The various types of songs I write make up the sum of who I am as a writer and performer. Terry Smith will be appearing with his Quilted Country Band in a limited number of parks in February. He will also perform at the Border Theater in downtown Mission on Monday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Appearing with Smith at the Border Theatre only will be award-winning cowboy poetry reciter, Rich Bellert, in a full two-hour show. The price of admission is $7 per person. For more information, call (612) 281-7147 or (712) 540-0452. Terry Smith can be seen Feb. 6 at Heritage Square, Mission; Feb. 7, The Grove, San Juan; Feb. 10, Val Verde RV Park, Donna, 2 p.m.; Feb. 13, Border Theater in Mission, 2 p.m. and Feb. 15, Quiet Village II.

FEBRUARY 2, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 39 WOOD CARVING

From ging a tree. Most of the wood is carved away from the figure, but not so much that it leaves the carver only one option to follow. Instead it leaves enough excess for the carver to put his or her own touch to the wood to call it his own. “It really just saves time in the process,” Vaughn said. “You can get to carving the object faster, there’s enough wood so you can change it to do what you want to in your style and quicker without having to remove all the excess wood.” Like painters, everyone has their own style and their favorite objects/genres to carve. “I really like doing a lot of Santas, carousel horses and last year I got into fish reproductions,” Vaughn said. “Those take probably a couple of hundred hours – it’s the scaling that takes a lot of time.” John Morehead recently completed a hollowed out cane with a diamond pattern on the outside. He carved a chain on the inside through the diamond openings on the outside and then carved a working turnbuckle on the inside along with the chain. Doug Wilkerson, 93, of Minnesota, has very little use of his left hand due to an injury in World War II. However, he is in the carving building nearly every day,

pg. 1 working on plates and canes or animals. “He does a little bit of everything,” said Gene Veneer who, along with Morehead, is also on the committee. “Don’t tell him you can’t do something – look at all he does. It’s amazing.” Most carvers use basswood for their pieces. The wood is not really considered a soft wood but it’s softer and with a finer wood grain, which makes it great for detail in an object. Oak and pine have larger grain that doesn’t take detail very well and oak is just too hard to carve with, said Vaughn. Vaughn said it doesn’t matter what level a carver is at, from beginner to expert, there are others in the club – and usually working in the building, to help at any point. While the purpose is to create lifelike objects, the real enjoyment comes in the camaraderie. “I really enjoy the peacefulness of it,” Vaughn said. “The second thing I ever did was a rose and my mother still has it. I remember thinking back then – this is really neat; that piece of wood looks like a rose. I always enjoyed working with wood, even before I started carving, but this has taken me way beyond that – it’s really a nice medium to work in.”
