Great entertainment planned for Mission’s Winter Texan Fiesta

Where can Winter Texans find such great entertainers as Johnny Ray Gomez, The Richard Lynch Band, Bill Chrastil, Mama’s Wranglers, Regan James Swedeen, and Terry Smith all in one place? The Mega Winter Texan Fiesta in Mission, of course. With an attendance of over 3,000 Winter Texans every year, this Winter Texan appreciation event hosted by the Mission Chamber of Commerce is the most popular event in the Rio Grande Valley. Rich Bellert, the show’s producer, will be emceeing and entertaining with his cowboy poetry. This is Bellert’s 15th out of 16 years producing the Winter Texan Fiesta for the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce. The annual Winter Texan Fiesta planned for Saturday, Feb. 11, will be held once again at Leo Peña Placita Park in downtown Mission across from H-E-B, located on Conway Ave. and Business 83. Things get started at 11 a.m. with a free lunch provided for those with meal vouchers. Free meal vouchers are available through the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce, 202 W. Top-ranked Montalvo returns to Santa Maria Bullring

Sunday, Feb. 12, Leal Montalvo returns to put on one of his remarkable performances in a bloodless bullfight at the Santa Maria Bullring. Leal, who is ranked among the top matadors of Mexico, opened the season this year with a perfect display of complete fearless art and domination of his two colminar bulls. “His performance was impeccable, his bravery was displayed with each series of passes he made bringing the bull closer and closer and ending the series each time with a pass bringing the bull behind his back,” said Santa Maria Bullring owner Fred Renk. Leal has been the golden trophy win-

ner for the past three seasons, and he is a favorite among the Winter Texan fans. Alternating with Leal will be last week’s triumphant, 17-year-old Joselito Sainz of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. At five foot, three inches tall, he has been named the “Little Giant.” “He spent half the time passing the bull on his knees, creating a roar of ole’s during his two bull performances,” Renk said. “He truly is something to watch. He dominated his bulls while being barely able to see over their backs.” Joselito has predicted he will triumph, and top the big star Leal. See Montalvo- pg. 30

Liverpool Legends perform limited engagement

Get ready for a Beatles show that is as close to authentic as it gets when the Liverpool Legends make a return trip to the Rio Grande Valley to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles. Louise Harrison, sister of the late George Harrison, created this Beatles tribute group. From the moment they boys walk out on stage the physical resemblance to the originally Beatles is unbelievable. Their accents, mannerisms and behavior have been carefully developed so they look like the original Beatles. And when they sing, they sound like the original Beatles. This is the group that performed a special show at Victoria Palms in 2013 that had the audience up and dancing in the aisles to the songs they loved in the

1960s. They have returned to the Valley several times since then to help the Beatles generation relive the glory days when Beatles were the undisputed favorites of the younger generation. Listen for songs like “My Girl,” “Mr. Postman,” “Money Can’t Buy Love,” and “Yesterday,” the most recorded Beatles song of all time. Other hits include “Yellow Submarine,” “Love Is All You Need,” “Move Over Beethoven,” and “Will You Still Need Me?” There will be one performance only on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Historic Edinburg Auditorium. Tickets are available at www.topboxtickets.com. Or call (956) 631-1411 to order tickets by phone and receive a $5 discount.

Goldwing will return to the RGV

With rumors flying about their retirement from the road, Goldwing would like the folks in the Rio Grande Valley to know they plan to return to the Valley next season. They do intend to retire from most road travel, where they drive long distances between nightly shows. And with good reason because they have been hired by Dolly Parton to be a part of her Dixie Stampede show in Branson, Mo. During the Branson season they will be working at the Dixie Stampede. But because Branson closes down for a couple of months during the worst part of winter, they will continue to return for six weeks to the Rio Grande Valley and perform here while the weather is bad in Branson.

Country artist Josh Turner to appear at Edinburg Fiesta The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce presents the 49th Annual Fiesta Edinburg. The festival will be moving to a new location this year at H-E-B Park, located at 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd. in Edinburg. “We are excited about the new venue and we know our festival fans are going to love it as well,” said Letty Gonzalez, president of the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. “The facilities are state-ofthe-art and this is going to create an environment like no other. The amphitheater is going to be electric.” On Friday, February 24, Nashville recording artist and famed country singer Josh Turner will perform. Also performing on the same stage are special guests The Powell Brothers, Eddie Saenz and Lauren Corzine. The festival will run February 23-26 and is expected to draw thousands of spectators to Edinburg. Fiesta Edinburg is the Edinburg Chamber’s largest celebration. Besides being a fun, quality of life event for the city and the Rio Grande Valley, major attractions such as the Heart of America Carnival, regional food, arts/crafts plus top-notch entertainment are a large draw to the community festival. Multi-platinum MCA Nashville recording artist Josh Turner, is one of coun-

try music’s most recognizable hit-makers. With a rich, deep voice and distinctive style, Turner has sold more than 12 million units, is a disciple of traditional country music and one of the youngest members of the Grand Ole Opry. From his 2003 Platinum-selling debut “Long Black Train” to his most recent 2012 Billboard No. 1 release “Punching Bag,” Turner has garnered multiple GRAMMY, CMA, and ACM nominations. Turner’s hits include “Your Man,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” “Firecracker,” “Would You Go with Me,” “All Over Me,” and “Time Is Love,” the most played country song of 2012. Turner is currently on the road in support of his latest radio single, “Hometown Girl,” which Rolling Stone Country notes, “pairs the South Carolina native’s unmistakable, country-to-the-core baritone with a modern, rollicking beat.” General admission concert tickets are $35 and this includes admission to the vendor and exhibit area of the festival. Limited Premium Admission concert tickets are also available for $55. Purchase tickets at www.hebparkrgv.com. Parking is free. Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course

Winter Texans’ Favorite Mid-Valley Golf Courses

Tierra Santa wins Winter Texans’ Favorite Golf Course Valleywide

By Henry Miller One thing is for certain, Winter Texans still like challenges, especially at good prices. Responses to the Winter Texan Times’ Winter Texan Favorite Golf Course contest is the perfect indicator of that assessment. Winter Texans all across the Rio Grande Valley – from Howling Trails in La Joya to River Bend and South Padre Island – were asked what their favorite course was in three regions. They chose their favorite Upper Valley, Mid-Valley and Lower Valley course. When all was said and done, as well as their favorite golf course overall, Valleywide. In the Valleywide competition, Weslaco’s Tierra Santa edged out McAllen’s Palm View and Pharr’s Tierra Del Sol in an extremely close contest. This was the third year that the Win-

ter Texan Times held the popularity contest. Those three courses captured 65.4 percent of the voting with Tierra Santa earning 24 percent, barely edging the runners up. All total, 14 courses received at least one vote. Of course, Tierra Santa also captured Favorite Mid-Valley Golf Course. “It’s a very well-maintained golf course,” said Karen Fallis, who resides in Pine-to-Palm Resort Park in Weslaco. “I like the layout of it and the fairways are nice and my husband (Garry) and I and some friends try to play 2-3 times per week there.” Fallis lives on a golf course back home in Manitoba, Canada. Tony Butler earns 2nd Place Tie in Mid-Valley

For the second straight year, Tony Butler captured second place for golf courses in the Mid-Valley. One of the things that Winter Texans especially love about the 27-hole facility is the option to play 18 or to jaunt over to the 9-hole course that measures a short 2,600 yards and is a par35. Eddie Medlin, director of golf at the club for 14 years, said the Winter Texan golfers are more than just visitors; they develop relationships with them just like the full-time residents. “The course is in a lot better shape than it has been in quite a while. We have worked real hard on it, especially this last summer,” Medlin said. “The Winter Tex-

ans, they make the world go around in the golf industry down here. Without our Winter Texans it would be very difficult to support as many golf courses in the Valley as there is. We love having our Winter Texans and build a relationship that goes beyond golf. We look forward to them showing up in November and December, and we are always sorry to see them leave in March and April. That goes beyond just the economical aspect of them being here. They are very special to us.” Located at 2640 South M Street in Harlingen, the 18-hole section of the course measures 6,400 yards and is a par71. Phone 956-216-5970.

Treasure Hills ties for No. 2 in Mid-Valley

It wasn’t too long ago that Treasure Hills was up for sale. Then it looked like it was sold. Then it was up for sale again. The discourse that ran through the golf course, and lack of maintenance, added to the course’s struggle. Since its sale, however, the reviews continue to be more and more positive. Several people have commented on one golf website that they had an “Excellent round and interesting course, tricky holes

that seem to be easy and they aren’t.” Located at 3009 N. Augusta National Dr. in Harlingen, the par-72 course isn’t the longest of courses, maxing out at 6,960 yards, but it provides several holes with water and many shot-making opportunities. The course has a scenic rolling terrain and water on many holes. For more information, call 956-4251700.

Winter Texans’ Favorite Upper Valley Golf Courses

Palm View is Winter Texans’ Favorite Upper Valley golf course

By Henry Miller MCALLEN – Carlos Espinosa was very curious. Here he was with one of the most beautifully laid out golf courses in the largest city in the Rio Grande Valley, but something didn’t add up. Numbers were drastically falling in terms of Winter Texas rounds and Espinosa, the director of golf for the city’s course, couldn’t figure out why. “It makes you doubt your ability and wonder why. Where am I failing? Where is our staff failing?” Espinosa said.

“Those were the things that drove me to make some changes more than anything.” The changes have been received positively among the Winter Texans as they have voted Palm View as their favorite Upper Valley course in the annual Winter Texan Times Favorite Golf Course Contest. With 12 courses available to choose from in the Upper Valley section of the contest, Palm View finished on top with 31.5 percent of the votes, followed by See PALM VIEW GOLF pg. 29

Tierra Del Sol takes No. 2 spot in Upper Valley

It wasn’t too long ago that Tierra Del Sol had to make a decision – cart paths were incomplete, there were way too many spots where there was no grass in the fairways, great shots to greens wouldn’t hold and poor drainage would turn fairways into small lakes. The City of Pharr decided to close the course for a short time to invest nearly a million dollars. The investment has been well worth it. Winter Texan rounds are up and the golf course clearly doesn’t play the way it used to. That’s clear right from hole No. 1. Now a long approach shot has a much better chance of staying on the green since they raised the back side of it to stop balls from speeding off the green

and, in many cases, into the rough. “Come back!” read one post on golflink.com related to the new Tierra Del Sol back in late 2015. “New greens keeper and it’s already starting to look better. Greens are good, with little break to the hole. The fairways are in good shape. The sand traps are also looking good.” Located at 700 E. Hall Acres Road in Pharr, Tierra del Sol plays nearly 6,800 from the longest set of tees. It currently has openings for its Winter Texan Leagues. Tierra Del Sol is a pubic, 18-hole golf course, 72 par, 6767 yards. For information about Tierra Del Sol Golf Course, call 956-402-4545.

Los Lagos rounds out top three in Upper Valley

Last year’s top pick by Winter Texans as their favorite Upper Valley golf course, Los Lagos can be challenging for the best of golfers. This year, Los Lagos, coming in as No. 3 in the Upper Valley favorite category, still ranks high as a Winter Texan favorite. Moguls (rolling hills), doglegs that have strategically placed sand traps (and residential developments) give the golfer two options – take the straight and narrow and hope for a great approach shot, or be faced with the possibility of a three-put, or cut off corners and hope to not land in someone’s back yard or in a deep bunker. Oh yeah, and then there’s the wind. While most courses in South Texas are affected by sometimes very strong winds, it seems that Los Lagos is blessed – or cursed depending on how

much of a challenge you like – with an overabundance of it. Located at 1720 South Longoria Road in Edinburg, golfnow.com sums up the course by saying “The signature hole is the intimidating par 3 No. 14, which plays anywhere from 130 to 160 yards depending on the tee and pin placements. The southeast wind impacts your shot into a kidney-shaped green that is guarded by water on the left and a large pot bunker on the front right. The green is a tough two-putt, and if you miss the approach back right, you’re faced with a tough chip back downhill toward the hole.” Los Lagos is a public golf course offering 18 holes, 72 par, 7188 yards. River Bend, South Padre Island Golf Clubs tie for first place

By Henry Miller The votes have been counted, and there is a tie for first place as the Winter Texans’ Favorite Lower Valley Golf Course. River Bend Golf Club tied with South Padre Island Golf Club in the annual Winter Texan Times Favorite Golf Course Contest. Winter Texan Robert Kinash is quick to say what he likes most about River Bend Golf Club in Brownsville. “It has everything,” he said. “It’s an all around good course.” Then he adds, “It doesn’t haven any bunkers, and that’s a good thing.”

Kinash, who lives in La Floresta Park in Mercedes, picked River Bend as his favorite course. River Bend was built as a nine-hole course but expanded to 18 holes in 1985. It’s situated along the banks of the Rio Grande and is considered one of the bestkept secrets in the Valley. Of course, for 30 years there was no marketing – zero, nada, zilch. That changed when the Barnard family purchased the course in 2015. Now General Manager Jeremy Barnard and his dad and uncle – owners of the course – have See RIVER BEND pg. 31

South Padre Island Golf Club earns First Place tie in Lower Valley

With the most picturesque sights from many tees of the Laguna Madre and South Padre Island in the distance, the view at South Padre Island Golf Club is enough to get you to go back time and again. Located at 1 Golf House Road in Laguna Vista, the course can go from a normal to challenging course to extremely difficult when the wind decides to pay a visit.

“When the north wind blows, the course can be extremely difficult,” General Manager Chris Meade said last year when the course won the most popular title outright. “It’s like playing a totally different course.” South Padre Island Golf is a public course with 18 holes, par 72 and 6800 yards. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. Pirate’s Landing Welcomes Winter Texans

One of the most popular places to dine while visiting Port Isabel is Pirate’s Landing, where Winter Texans are favored customers. Not only does the restaurant offer a variety of lunch specials but also there is bar open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with half price specials. There is a full line of wines, beers and mixed drinks to suit all tastes. Plus, Cactus Willie entertains Monday through Thursday and often the bar area overflows into the main dining room. During Winter Texan season, manager Dan Reeves offers half price specials during happy hour, including half price shrimp on Mondays, pulled pork sandwiches on Tuesdays, all appetizers half price on Wednesdays, bangers and mashed potatoes (English sausages with mashed potatoes) on Thursday, and half price oysters on Friday. For lunch there are a number of offerings including deep fried avocado filled with shrimp salad. Very good! Reeves recommends the South of the Border Taste of Shrimp Cerviche with boiled shrimp marinated in lime juice with avocado and pico de gallo. Also very good! For anyone with a gluten problem their crab cakes are gluten-free. For those who do not enjoy seafood, Reeves recommends chicken salad croissant with walnuts, or the chopped steak wrapped in bacon and served with a side of veggies and mashed potatoes. Then there are favorites such as Crab Louie, po’ boy sandwiches and burgers. For those who want a heavier meal, try ginger marinated salmon, bacon wrapped shrimp, and flounder or snapper dishes. Dessert comes in all flavors of cheesecakes or the signature molten chocolate cake with ice cream on top.

The scenery is great because it is right on the water next to the Queen Isabella Causeway so visitors can watch the sea traffic as it comes and goes past the bank of large windows. It is a great place to enjoy the scenery, and kick back and relax with a great meal while listening to Cactus Willie.

PALM VIEW GOLF

From pg. 18 Tierra Del Sol with 26 percent and Los Lagos with 10 percent. “I really like the course and the layout,” said Carol Paterson, a Winter Texan resident of the Penitas RV Park. “I like the specials they put on too.” Paterson said she likes the fact that the course has a variety of distances from tee to green and she can use all her clubs. She especially has a likeness for No. 9, a hole with plenty of trouble approaching the green from the left side. “I try to stay right,” Paterson said. “My ball usually goes right anyway so I like that hole.” “It’s humbling to hear comments like that,” Espinosa said. “I tell our customers that we are far from perfect but we try to be and we are so thankful for them to choose us.” Espinosa’s curiosity led him to study what was happening, why their numbers had been falling for about 10 years. Sure, there are fewer rounds being played all across the nation regardless of age, but the

numbers didn’t make sense to him. Espinosa said he took a deep look at what had been taking place and decided to go visit the parks and talk with the communities. “I got to know the customer better and identify what they wanted and implemented a program that would benefit them and us.” What transpired was the end of a free fall and the beginning of a three-year upward trend. It’s still not the numbers from 10 years ago, but Espinosa describes the change as “unparalleled and I am as grateful as I could be to them.” Palm View is a par-72 course with a mid-range length of 5,779 yards form the middle tees but turns into a lengthy and challenging 6,771 yards from the back tees. While is has some fairly wide-open holes, it also has holes that will challenge how much you are willing to “go for it” for a better approach. Palm View Golf Course is located at 2701 S Ware Rd., McAllen. Phone 956681-3444.

From pg. 19 huge plans. “Since buying the course we have rebranded, redid the website, the logo, and started a big marketing effort,” Barnard said. “We’ve hired consultants, an architect out of Michigan and we are slowly remodeling.” They’ve also hired the same agronomist out of Florida who helped with a major remodel at Pebble Beach Golf Course in 1993. “We are dealing with really high caliber people,” Barnard said. “Going forward we have plans to improve the course more and plans for more housing, commercial and RV lots. There’s a huge master plan. River Bend has approximately 75 fulltime residents and swells to more than

about 35-40 percent of our business and we have started reaching out to other parks and opening different options for memberships,” Barnard said, adding that golfers can play for as low as $22 per round with one of the punch-card options offered. “We’re still looking at how we can reach them more,” Barnard said. “They are a huge part of us and we love how faithful and loyal they are. They have an old-school mentality where they want to be a part of something and belong somewhere. We have some guys who moved here in 1985 or 86 – they don’t need a yardage book, that’s for sure.” For more information, call 956-5480191.

www.wttrgv.com ARTISAN SHOW

From pg. 1 up their wares. Lisa Price, event coordinator, said there are about 38 vendors who are planning to participate. Approximately half will be from Mexico. Others will be local food vendors. There will also be some local artisans who set up a booth as well. Price said there would be homemade scarfs, woodworking, jewelry and paintings on sale. There will be Mexican clothing, and other goods brought in from Mexico to sell including Mexican candies. Food booths will include turkey legs, funnel cakes, tacos, empañadas and other popular fair foods. The Mexican Artisan Fair is part of the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta being planned by the Mission Chamber of Commerce to say, “Thank you, Winter Texans for choosing Mission as your winter home.” It will open at 1 p.m. on Friday and close at 8 p.m. It will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Price also invited those coming to the artisan fair to attend the Mission Quilt Show Awards ceremony being held in the museum annex building (old post office) on Tom Landry St. at 2 p.m. There will be a “Turning of the Quilts” presentation

along with announcements of winners. According to Price the main gallery of the museum on Doherty will house a collection of dresses from previous Texas Citrus Fiesta Royal Coronations. The exhibit includes the queen’s gown and the Princess Anna gown for 2015 and several duchess dresses. Plan to make an afternoon of it on Friday. Stop by and enjoy some delicious food and see the creations of the artisans from Mexico before going to the quilt show awards ceremony or plan to stay afterwards for a more leisurely look at the goods on sale.. And don’t forget to see those ball gowns up close. The fair will also be open on Saturday, Feb. 11 during the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta entertainment. It is a short walk from the outdoor amphitheater to the museum for those who get tired of sitting so long. Either day, it’s a great way to enjoy the hospitality of the city of Mission, the chamber of commerce and all the good folks in Mission who want to express their appreciation to our Winter Texan friends by hosting the Mega Winter Texan Fiesta celebration. www.wttrgv.com MCALLEN EXPO

From pg. 1 The entertainment at this year’s Travel & Health & Wellness Expo, hosted by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, will feature the sounds of Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. Also, the popular local band “The Agency” will bring a classic rock, Soul and Motown sounds right out of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The event, formerly known as the McAllen Travel Show, has added a Health, Body and Mind Expo to add a wide range of variety, creating the McAllen Travel & Health and Wellness Expo. So, start spreading the news: Gary Anthony will be delivering one of the most swooning voices of all time. As the premier Frank Sinatra tribute artist, Anthony has been described as not just sounding like Sinatra but also “evoking Sinatra and channeling Sinatra.” “Gary captures Sinatra’s voice and bravado presence superbly,” states a press release. “...his resemblance to Sinatra is positively eerie.” But Sinatra’s voice isn’t the only one that will resonate through the convention center during the expo. Denise Rose will perform as Judy Garland, whose most famous role as an actress came as Dorothy in the original Wizard of Oz, where she sang “Somewhere Over The Rainbow.” In June, Rose received a special Tribute Artist award from the Las Vegas Entertainers Hall of Fame, following the

premier of her one-woman show “Songs and Stories of Judy Garland.” Rose idolized Garland and made her professional debut on stage at the age of 15. If the soft, swooning sounds of Sinatra and Garland don’t capture you, then the jazzy performance of The Agency should surely pique your interest. The group is a local band that is in its 24th year of performing. “Composed of seasoned musicians who grew up with classic rock, “The Agency” is well known for finely crafted vocals, blended sound and danceable arrangements,” according to a press release. The McAllen Travel & Health & Wellness Expo will have plenty of activities. See MCALLEN EXPO pg. 42

The winners will be announced at the Valley Star Awards Show on Feb. 18 at Mission Bell Resort. at survey@wintertexantimes.com to request a ballot, which you can complete and email, mail or fax back to us. Our fax number is 956-585-2304. Limit one ballot per person. The Valley Star Awards Show, hosted by Robert and Billie Ferguson, will be held, Saturday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort, 1711 E. Bus. 83, Mission. The awards show features live performances by some of the Valley’s top

www.wttrgv.com www.wttrgv.com entertainers. This year’s lineup of entertainment includes Bill Chrastil, Mario, Sherwin and Pam Linton, Leslie Blasing, Susan Hudson and the Edinburg Folkloric Dancers. Tickets to the Valley Star Awards Show are $15 and are available at Mission Bell Resort, (605) 610-6114; Winter Texan Times office at 1217 N. Conway Ave., Mission; or order by phone by calling (865) 253-2514. This is a great opportunity to see all of these top performers come together in one show. To ensure good seating for your

group, buy your tickets early. Those who fill out a ballot this year are asked to vote for someone in every category, if you are familiar with the nominees. In the past, some ballots have come in with only one category marked. Also, be sure to write in your choice for Entertainer or Group of the Year. This can be any of the individuals or groups on the ballot, from any category. This year, this award is open to groups as well as individual entertainers.
