La Joya folklórico, mariachi host fiesta celebration
By Jim Brunson The high school that started a nationwide movement celebrating the heritage of music and dance from Mexico, Spain and Latin America is celebrating the program’s 35th anniversary, with a two-day fiesta. In 1982 La Joya High School started
a mariachi and folkloric dance program that soon earned the school national honors, including a trip to the White House to perform for the president of the United States – not once but twice. This weekend on Feb. 18 and 19, La Joya High School Mariachi Los Coyotes and Folklórico Tabasco will be celebrat-
ing their 35 years with performances at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center in La Joya. As the La Joya tradition of excellence continues, the community always looks forward to their annual concerts, but this See La Joya Mariachi pg. 31

Tupelo and Janey Wing Kenyon have been performing their unique blend of music and comedy together since 1978. They have traveled from Alaska to South America, from California to Carolina and from Europe to Asia, performing at fairs, festivals, universities, resorts, cruise ships and community concerts. Laughing Bird show is a lively mix of original contemporary folk music with overtones of country, bluegrass, and light acoustic rock. At their performance, they perform original songs that will “wow” the audience, songs of the heart, and songs that make people laugh. The overall effect is an informal, light-hearted and intimate show to make everyone feel good. Laughing Bird’s songs are carefully crafted to include compelling lyrics accompanied by accomplished acoustic musicianship. Tupelo plays 6 and 12-stringacoustic guitar, dobro, mandolin, banjola, harmonica, and a toe-tapped tambourine. Janey plays mountain dulcimer, bass guitar, banjo and various percussion instruments. Tupelo and Janey both enjoy singing, and most of their songs feature tight harmony arrangements. Their show is spirited with surprises such as off-thewall comedy, a nine-inch dancing clog doll, and even a little yodeling. Tupelo and Janey have recorded 15
albums through the years and a concert DVD featuring their original songs. Their latest album titled, “Still a Mystery” was recently released. CDs and DVDs are available at their performances, and from their website, www.LaughingBirdMusic. com. Original, refreshing, and captivating is a good description of Laughing Bird’s show, but their real magic is the warm, genuine, and unpretentious energy they project from the stage. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-touching, Tupelo and Janey clearly love what they do, and it shows! Come relax, laugh, and enjoy the way Laughing Bird makes the audience feel. Good Tunes . . . Good Times! Music . . . Laughter . . . Fun! Golden Oldies Show features all-star cast Three of the Valley’s Favorite Entertainers – Susan Carman, John Sager and Greg Jones – have once again teamed up to create a popular show they put on annually called the “Golden Oldies Show.” John Sager, who has been Male Vocalist of the Year several times at the Valley Star Awards and was also voted Entertainer of the Year, will be one of the headliners. He was born in Quebec, Canada, he was adopted and raised in Ohio where he showed his musical talents early on. He began piano lessons at 9 years old and learned trombone and tuba in the band. He sang in the high school choir and was named Best Vocalist his junior and senior years. While he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Deshler, a Sister sent him a letter about a singing contest to aid battered women. At her request, he sent in a demo tape and was selected as one of the top ten. Encouraged by this success he went on to enter the Toledo Idol contest in 2003 where he opened for B.J. Thomas and received a standing ovation for his performance. In 2004 he opened for Bobby Rydell and received another standing ovation. In 2009 he moved to Branson where he worked at Mel’s Hard Luck Diner and then Jackie B. Goode’s Uptown Cafe where he gets to sing every day. In 2010 his CD “Living the Dream” was voted Best CD of Branson. He was also named Best Male Vocalist of Branson. In 2011 he was also named Best Male Vocalist of the Year and his gospel CD, “Hope, Love and Faith,” was Best Gospel CD for Branson. Susan Hudson Carman Susan Hudson Carman toured with the USO who entertained troops in the United States, Greenland and Canada. In 2012 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2012 and was also named Female Vocalist of the Year by Valley Star Awards. Known for her ability to deliver a song, Susan Hudson Carman is a former USO entertainer. In addition to entertaining troops in the United States, she traveled to Greenland. In the mid-70s she was opening for CMA Entertainer of the Year Charlie Rich. In 1988, she defeated 2500 females for the title Ms. Country Music America. The award was presented by Tammy

Wynette on the Grand Old Opry Stage. She also appeared on the television show, “Hee Haw.” She has also produced songs for several major record labels and has been the subject (and on the cover) of several music industry magazines. In 1991 Susan Hudson Carman moved to Branson, Missouri where she has appeared in numerous shows including the Ferlin Huskey Show, The Starlighters, Elvis and the Superstars, the Ladies of Motown and Fountains of Faith. Greg Jones Greg Jones’ interest in music began at the age of 3 when he performed on stage for the first time with Leon McAuliffe and his orchestra in Coffeyville, Kansas. While in college he was lead singer for a quartet that sang Top 40 music. After college he hit the road and opened for such stars as Tony Bennett, Ben Vereen, and the Mills Brothers. Greg toured the country for many years with show bands, quartets, trios, and his own “one-man band show.” Greg’s vocal range has allowed him to sing lead and harmony with several groups. His love for all kinds of music has enables him to sing everything from country, pop, oldies, show tunes, standards, and gospel. He also plays keyboards, and guitar, and his variety music is all family oriented with good clean music, comedy and fun. He was the recipient of the 2011 Country Gospel Music Association Male Artist Award. While living in Branson Greg performed at Silver Dollar City, Treasure Lake RV Resort and with Barbara Fairchild at the Starlight Theatre. He and Jodi Miller sang at several Veterans Day celebrations. He has also opened for Jeff and Sheri, Easter, Gold City and in Harmony. In the last few years he has played in RV parks in California, Arizona, and Texas along with performances at festivals and churches around the country. All three musicians have a record of outstanding performances. Golden Oldies can be seen Feb. 20 at Casa Del Valle Resort at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m.; March 5 at Park Place Estates at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and March 13 at Paradise South in Mercedes at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. FEBRUARY 16, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.
Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. PPS – This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. When you register, you can bring a guest at no additional cost (we do this because many people request to bring their spouse or other family member).

Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day in Edinburg The Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg, a museum chronicling the heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, invites the community to celebrate Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day on Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This community festival began more than 25 years ago and continues to offer a day filled with entertainment and demonstrations that illustrate the crafts and traditions of early farming and ranching in South Texas and northeastern Mexico. This year’s theme will include the history of saddles from the early days of Spanish exploration throughout the lands
of the Rio Grande to the modern days of working vaqueros. Families can also experience the history of live ranch-style cooking and craft demonstrations with music and dance performances. The Pioneer & Ranching Crafts Day event is included in regular museum admission: $7 adults, $5 seniors with ID (ages 62+). For more information on the event call (956) 383-6911. FEBRUARY 16, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES VALLEY STAR AWARDS
From Awards, the Winter Texan version of the Academy Awards, will be announced in a show starting at 6 p.m. at Mission Bell Resort, 1711 E. Bus. 83, Mission. Tickets are $15 and are available at Mission Bell Resort, the Winter Texan Times and can be ordered by phone at (865) 253-2514. Leslie Blasing is a “homegrown” entertainer, originally from Hondo, Texas, who could be singing in Branson with the some of the other entertainers who come to the Valley each year, but she likes it here at the Island. She works in a variety of clubs on South Padre Island and adds a few Winter Texan parks to her schedule each season. She is immensely popular with Winter Texans who voted her Female Vocalist of the Year from 2013 to 2016 and Entertainer of the Year from 20142016 in the Valley Star Awards. Susan Hudson Carman was 2012 Female Vocalist of the Year. In her younger years she was a member of the USO and traveled around the United States and Canada United States entertaining troops. She has worked with notables like Charlie Rich, Ferlin Huskey, Tammy Wynette and had a role on the television show, “Hee Haw.” In 1998 she was named Ms. Country Music America, defeating 2500 other hopefuls. She has lived in Branson, Missouri since 1991, appearing in shows like the Starlighters, Elvis and the Superstars, the Ladies of Motown and Fountains of

pg. 1 Faith. Bills Chrastil, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was the 2016 Male Vocalist of the Year. Bill does a number of special tributes to well-known performers in his show, including Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson, Neill Diamond, and Bruce Springsteen (using the voice of Elmer Fudd). The second half of his shows are usually dedicated to Elvis. An entertainer with 30 years of experience, he has rapidly gained popularity in the Rio Grande Valley since his arrival three years ago. Mario Rosales in known for his tribute
to Rodney Dangerfield, and for his singing voice. Mario can hit those low notes no one else can reach. He sings an array of music styles from classic country to Frank Sinatra and anything in between. He lived and worked most of his life as a voiceover artist and stand-up comic in Hollywood. In 2004 he moved to Branson where he worked in several shows and developed his Rodney Dangerfield tribute. Recently, he moved to Las Vegas to be closer to his children and works in the club there when not in the Rio Grande Valley. Sherwin Linton and his wife Pam, are entertainment phenomena. In his 62 years as an entertainer, (he started at age 16), he has yet to miss a single show. Though
Sherwin was entertaining long before Pam joined him on his show and later married him, their voices – with his deep, rich sound and her high sweet sound – complement each other greatly. Sherwin is known for coming on stage in all black and saying “Hello, I’m not Johnny Cash.” He sings Cash’s music so authentically people not paying close attention might think it actually was Johnny Cash. A special addition to this year’s entertainment is the Edinburg Folkloric Group which has entertained in a number of Winter Texan parks across the Valley. It is bound to be a great show and everyone wants to know who won the awards for this year. Come out and join the fun!

LaDawn brings variety performances to RGV resorts
Over her career, LaDawn has studied piano, guitar and violin, but her real focus has been her voice. In pursuit of improving her vocal capabilities, she has worked with many vocal coaches, including internationally renowned soprano, Kristine Ciesinski. Though most of her adult years were spent raising her six children, LaDawn continued working on her musical career. She auditioned for and was hired by CONSONO, a choral ensemble led by Dr. Paul Busselberg that performs in the Houston area. At the same time, she would perform with amazing characters at the local Honky-tonks around northwest Houston. LaDawn was raised in a French Canadian home and later lived for a time in Panama. “Altogether, it really gave me a broad musical versatility that comes through in my selections for my shows.” When asked what type of music she sings, LaDawn is quick to reply that she loves to sing everything. Her shows consist of a wide variety of hits from over the years including songs by artists such as Dolly Parton, Doris Day, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Connie Francis. For LaDawn performing is not so much about the genre as it is about presenting the very best performance that
she can. “When I perform I love to share my voice and energy with others. It’s all about everyone having fun, including me. I try to bring a little bit of glitz and sparkle too!” Although new to the Rio Grande Valley, LaDawn’s 2018 schedule is quickly filling up. In addition, she has been invited to perform on the Goldwing Express second annual cruise next year on February 5-9. She has four shows that she will be doing for the 2018 season: Her Christmas Show begins with some fun and laughs and transitions to a more traditional Christian theme. Her Sentimental Journey Show starts with music from the 40s and travels through to the 80s. Her Worldwide Melodies Show is a collection of popular songs that have an international theme to them. Her Rock n’ Country Show highlights hit songs from the 50s and 60s. LaDawn’s outlook on the future is very positive, “I’m so excited. God has been very good to me. And I’m taking a deep breath because I know I’m at the beginning of my second wind.” This season, you can see LaDawn perform Feb. 16, Tip O Texas, Pharr; and Feb. 18 at 4 Seasons Mobile & RV, Brownsville. All shows begin at 7 p.m.

Coming directly from Italy, Emidio and Lisetta Milano introduced pizza to the Valley over 60 years ago. It was such a hit that local stores were soon asking the Milano’s to make pizzas they could freeze and sell to their customers. Soon the customers were asking the family to open a pizza place. In 1955, they opened their first restaurant on their front porch with “four tables and ten broken chairs.” In 1960, son Lino returned to Italy and married Giovanna Corrente, who eventually became known as “Mama Milano.” They grew the business into the well-known restaurant it is today. Now Giovanna and her three children own it. Today, the restaurant features a variety of Italian foods, many of which are made with ingredients imported from Italy. When the Winter Texan Times visited recently, we started our meal with an order of bruschetta. It was delicious! The olive oil had a light flavor and the bread was homemade, as is all the bread served at Milano’s. The bread was followed by garden fresh vegetable salads with Italian and raspberry dressings made in the restaurant. Then we were served two entrees, which Norma Reyes and I chose to
share. The first was Pollo Marsala, a pan-seared breaded chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, grape tomatoes, and prosciutto in a Marsala wine sauce. The second entrée was Pasta Casino with a Gorgonzola cream sauce with mushrooms, onions, peperoncini peppers and diced tomatoes with slices of baked chicken breast on top. It sat on a bed of bowtie pasta. Both were excellent. We both liked the taste of the Pollo Marsala best. But the spicy sauce of the Chicken Casino was excellent as well and would be favored by those looking for something slightly spicy. We ended our meal with Angela’s cheesecake, which is not your average cheesecake. It had a pecan crust and coconut pudding filling that was covered with a layer of cheesecake and served with cherry sauce. Excellent! Besides the entrees we tried, Milano’s has a line of those famous pizzas
that got them started, several soups and salads including the traditional Italian minestrone soup. There are a number of pasta dishes coupled with chicken and various kinds of seafood. Pork chops and rib eye steaks are also available. And look for traditional desserts like tiramisu and spumoni ice cream. Milano’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. Be sure eating at Milano’s is on the bucket list of things to do in the Rio Grande Valley while you are here! South Texas Tourism videos wanted
The “Life in the Rio” Smart Phone Video Contest presented by South Texas Tourism and the Winter Texan Times is now underway. And if you have not yet submitted your smart phone video, you still have time to enter the contest – and help promote the Rio Grande Valley to other folks up north who don’t know how much fun we have here on the Rio Grande. Keep those videos running at Winter Texan activities and send yours to South Texas Tourism. The videos should be 45 to 60 seconds long and depict a way in which Winter Texans are having fun in the Rio Grande Valley. No private businesses or
company logos can be displayed. RV Parks can be mentioned if this is where the activity is being filmed. There will be activities throughout the Valley this week that will make prime video opportunities. Don’t forget the upcoming Fiesta Edinburg. This Saturday the Valley Star Awards Show will be held in Mission. A little later in the month there will be a weeklong celebration of Charro Days in Brownsville with a variety of activities. You could record your visit to the birding centers around the Valley and the National Butterfly Center in Mission. Or take a video of one of the many activities

BorderFest will feature the USA as the theme of this year’s celebration. Normally, BorderFest choses a different country for the theme each year, bringing a bit of its culture and history to the Rio Grande Valley. In light of the current political climate the organizers decided to celebrate our own country, highlighting the things that make us all proud to be American. As such there will be a 45-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty in the center of Liberty Square, where there will also be informative displays of American icons, as well as a Broadway Stage with live performances. In addition, there will be a Sea Lion Splash show, a White Tiger Discovery, an interactive Kidz Science Lab, a motorcycle stunt show and much more.
It will be three days of music, food, and family fun. The festival is run by volunteers and BorderFest is currently seeking Winter Texan volunteers to donate their skills, time and talent. According to Shalimar Madrigal with BorderFest, Winter Texans are needed to be ticket sellers and takers, and to work as liaisons between merchants in booths and the BorderFest staff. “We have teenagers who volunteer who do the heavy work but mature adults are needed in positions that require handling of money and acting as booth supervisors, seeing that merchandise is replenished and that things run smoothly. For more information, call Volunteer Coordinator Rebecca Gonzalez at (956) 843-7400.
St. Baldric’s Foundation is asking for volunteers to take part in the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer. Every year men, women and children give up their locks of hair to raise money for childhood cancer research. Children in treatment typically lose their hair so volunteers shave their heads in public as a bold act of solidarity. Each year 175,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with cancer and it remains the number one killer of children in the US and Canada. One in 285 children will develop cancer by age 20.
Winter Texans who would like to volunteer for this cause will volunteer to shave or collect donations from local businesses, their friends and their families to support lifesaving childhood cancer research. The shaving event will take place Feb. 26 at 1:15 p.m. at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, 118 Paseo Del Prado, Edinburg. For more information, call Cristie Esparza at (956) 3623203 or to volunteer to shave call Wayne and Pat Chapman at (804) 212-6631. Or email Shave@fly-web.us.

MMA to hold Iwo Jima Parade Feb. 18
The Marine Military Academy in Harlingen will hold its annual Iwo Jima Parade Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. on the MMA Parade Ground. This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Open to the public, this event is a tribute to the courage and sacrifice made by The Greatest Generation to preserve freedom around the world. Because of the subtropical climate of South Texas, MMA is the only organization in the country that holds a battalion-size parade on the actual anniversary (Feb. 19, 1945) of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Last year, more than 350 people attended this event. There will be special reserved seating for Iwo Jima survivors in front of the parade stand, which directly faces the historic Iwo Jima Monument. During the parade, the Iwo Jima survivors will join the MMA superintendent for the ceremonial pass in review. Event-goers are encouraged to stop by the Iwo Jima Museum & Gift Shop after the parade to watch a video depicting the Battle of Iwo Jima. They are also encouraged to view the Iwo Jima Monument and the gravesite of Cpl. Harlon Block before or after the parade. Since April 1982, MMA has been home to the Iwo Jima Monument. The magnificent statue depicts six Marines raising the
American flag on Feb. 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Block, the Marine depicted at the base of the flagstaff, was a native of Weslaco, Texas. For more information on the Iwo Jima Parade, call (956) 421-9225 or e-mail atkinson@MMA-TX.org.

Southern Anthem
gets better each year With a child prodigy fiddle player in 11-year-old Logan, members of Southern Anthem quipped they feared they would soon be known as the Logan Pausewang Back-up Band. Logan improves every year he plays. Taking lessons from Wade Landry has not hurt either. He plays many good fiddling songs but his trio of “Folsum Prison Blues,” “A-Train” and “Orange Blossom Special” produced a robust burst of applause from an obviously pleased audience, nodding their heads approvingly at the amount of talent he was displaying. But there is no need for Southern Anthem to fear. Mikaela, 16, has a very strong lead voice on all songs she sings, and Derek’s voice is maturing at 17. He does a great job on the “Auctioneer” song. Mom, Wendy, makes great harmony with Mikaela and also sings lead. She plays several musical instruments. With 4-yearold Miranda making her debut on stage this year, the band has a bright future. They won Inspirational Group of the Year at the Gatesville Music Festival and also received the Texas Star Award. They appeared in Branson last year and plan to return again this summer. For more information, call Wendy Pausewang at (254) 718-8505.

All Valley Boat Show is Feb. 17-19
Need a new boat for bay fishing? There is no better place to look for that boat than the 31st Annual All Valley Boat show to be held Feb. 17-19 at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Blvd., off Ware Road in McAllen. All sorts of boats will be on display. According to Ray Elizondo they will range from 15-foot to 27-foot boats for different fishing conditions. “Most of the boats on display will be bay boats,” said Elizondo. “Look for shallow water boats that can operate in water as shallow as three inches to three feet. There will be deck boats and pontoon boats. Some of the larger boats are designed for families, or up to 10 people, and have shades on top to block the sun. There will also be boats equipped to fish
in tournaments for the serious fishermen.” Elizondo said there would not be any yachts on display, but the average fisherman looking for a fishing boat, he should be able to find just what he needs. In addition to the display of boats, there will be door prizes and a virtual sailfish fishing tournament going on. Admission is $9 and on Friday Senior Citizens will get in for $5. They also receive a $1 discount on Saturday and Sunday. The show opens at 12 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. It opens Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m. and it is open on Sunday, Feb. 19 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the best fishing boats the Valley has to offer.
According to Sue Dodd of Hidden Valley Ranch in Mission, on Friday, Feb. 24, a special patriotic jam is planned. Any and all Jammers are invited to come and participate and perform a patriotic song or another song of their choosing. Jammers are asked to wear red, white and blue that night. Hidden Valley can seat up to 350 people and they hope to fill the hall with pa-
triotic jammers! That night will also be a night to support the Penitas Food Pantry. Sharon Child, manager, lives in Hidden Valley and will come to the jam. Non-perishable food supplies are requested. After Winter Texans leave Sharon struggles to keep enough food for people she serves, which can be several hundred per week. Please do not bring monetary gifts.

www.wttrgv.com MCALLEN EXPO From pg. 1
for more than 30 years. Last year, the Expo expanded to include the Wellness and Health Expo and now has more than 60 exhibitors. With many more exhibits, free admission and the combined attraction of both travel industry and health profession exhibitors the show is expected to draw good attendance. Some of the travel exhibitors visitors can expect to see at this year’s Expo include Chuck Olsen Tours & Cruises, San Luis Potosi and Durango, Mexico, Broadway McAllen, Corpus Christi CVB, Port Lavaca, Ron Hoover RV & Marine, Osprey Cruises and Breakaway Cruises, and many more. Then there are other “different” exhibitors who will be at the Expo as well – such as K9 Training Center. Marty Vielma and his wife Leslie Garbutt Vielma, owners of the K9 Training Centre located in Edinburg, are among the many exhibitors with booths at this year’s Expo. Marty and Leslie will not only demonstrate some training dogs, but will also teach the human side when it comes to assessing the right dog for the right purpose when looking for a service dog. Whether is be for law enforcement, or a companion for someone who struggles with PTSD, or as a hiking companion, the K9 Training Center help provide the right dog for the right situation.
“We will be focusing on service dogs and emotional support dogs and educating the public on the different type of service dogs and how to properly select the right dog for certain services,” said Marty, a Valley native who met his Canadian wife in dog training school. “People have a tendency to want to use a dog they’ve rescued or have had but a lot has to do with their genetics and their disposition where they may not be suitable. It’s not fair then to the dog to put it through that type of training.” Marty said that he and Vilma try to go beyond just the training aspect of their business. They started the business because they are dog lovers and they work together to help find forever homes for dogs and humans to unite. As an example, they may find that the dog they are assessing for the Canadian officer is a perfect match. They’ll send photos and give an assessment to the potential owner. If he’s interested in the dog, he can hire the K9 Centre to train the dog – but he doesn’t have to. “That’s the option the person has,” Marty said. “If they want to have the dogs trained, that would be their option. We could also try to find them a trainer near their area, get them training. It’s the option we give the people. It’s not just to get business but to get dogs a forever home.
FEBRUARY 16, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES 35 There will be a wide variety of other businesses with booths at the Expo including Las Vegas Nights. “We offer the experience of Las Vegas and we come to you,” said Gene Denby, owner of Las Vegas Nights, which has been running in the Rio Grande Valley for the past four years and he has run the business overall for 25 years. “We take casino
parties all over the place. We have black jack tables, roulette tables, slot machines, Flamingo show girls, Elvis and other impersonators. It’s the full experience.” For more information and for an updated list of exhibitors, entertainers and more, visit www.internationaltravelshow. com.
