Karla Santoyo

Sunday, Feb. 26, is the grand finale of the Winter Texan 2017 season. Starring in this final world-class bloodless bullfight is the youngest woman bullfighter in the world, Karla Santoyo. She hails from Aguascalientes, Mexico. The Santoyo family has a long history of legendary matadors, from grandfather to father to uncle all were ranked as top matadors in history. The Santoyos are also famous for the fighting bulls that they breed. This will be the third year that Karla has performed in the Santa Maria Bullring in La Gloria. She has created a tremendous following among the winter visitors. Last year, she was injured receiving a tremendous tossing that found her bleeding from her left ear; she was rushed to the hospital in Mission, and was treated for a slight concussion. But the remarkable young woman came back to the ring the next day and faced that bull again. Now her nickname is the Aztec Princess. Her bravery and talent for dominating a fighting bull is well known all over the Republic of Mexico and a few South American countries. She is destined to be a real star in the world of La Fiesta Brava (the See Grand Finale pg. 28

By Jim Brunson Those who attended this year’s Valley Star Awards Show last weekend at Mission Bell Resort were richly rewarded with an evening packed with outstanding entertainment, from beginning to end. Five top-notch performers put on a show that surely must have been one of the best shows ever performed in the Valley. Not having seen them perform previously, I wasn’t sure what to expect of the Edinburg Folkloric Dancers, but I was very pleasantly surprised with their outstanding performance of a native Indian dance that was comparable to the Polynesian dancers I have seen perform in Hawaii. Very impressive. Susan Hudson Carman opened up the musical performance portion of the program with an amazing routine, drawing on her years as a highly-talented professional entertainer. Her showmanship matched her remarkable voice as she sang songs like “Under the Boardwalk,” “Listen to a Country Song,” and “At Last,” all the while keeping the audience engaged with her humor. Mario followed Carman’s performance with an outstanding series See Valley Star Awards pg. 28

Southern Anthem gets better each year

With a child prodigy fiddle player in 11-year-old Logan, members of Southern Anthem quipped they feared they would soon be known as the Logan Pausewang Back-up Band. Logan improves every year he plays. Taking lessons from Wade Landry has not hurt either. He plays many good fiddling songs but his trio of “Folsum Prison Blues,” “A-Train” and “Orange Blossom Special” produced a robust burst of applause from an obviously pleased audience, nodding their heads approvingly at the amount of talent he was displaying during one of their recent shows in the RGV. But there is no need for Southern Anthem to fear. Mikaela, 16, has a very

strong lead voice on all songs she sings, and Derek’s voice is maturing at 17. He does a great job on the “Auctioneer” song. Mom, Wendy, makes great harmony with Mikaela and also sings lead. She plays several musical instruments. With 4-yearold Miranda making her debut on stage this year, the band has a bright future. They won Inspirational Group of the Year at the Gatesville Music Festival and also received the Texas Star Award. They appeared in Branson last year and plan to return again this summer. For more information about their show schedule or for bookings, call Wendy Pausewang at (254) 718-8505.

One of the favorite Winter Texan groups in the Valley is Southern Anthem. This group also features exceptionally talented young people. They will take the stage at 3 p.m. and is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser. To round off the afternoon the popular gospel quartet, 4 His Glory, will be singing. This group performs at 4 p.m. Do not miss them and the beautiful harmony they bring to the stage. Hopefully, next year, we will be able to have even more of our winter entertainers appear at BorderFest. So come on out to BorderFest on Saturday, March 4, and support these entertainers. It will be a delightful afternoon.

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE

I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. Back By Request…

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public. So if you would like to attend, be sure to register now…Call (956) 994-8880. How Much Is It to Attend? The event is FREE. Please call to register as spots fill fast As a Special Bonus…the first 10 people to call and register for the event will receive a $10.00 gift card. All 40 attendees for the Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop will receive a Special Report: “The Top 10 Burning Questions for Sciatica”.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Pure Physical Therapy PS – The first 10 People to call and register at (956)994-8880 will receive a $10 gift card. Denny’s offers delicious skillet dinners

For those who enjoy an all-in-one meal, Denny’s is offering three new Sizzlin’ Skillet Dinners – an entire meal on a skillet. The first is the Smoky Gouda Chicken and Broccoli Skillet. It has roasted chicken with carmelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, and broccoli served on a bed of white grain rice. It is topped with Italian cheese and Gouda cheese sauce. It can also be ordered with prime rib instead of chicken. The second is a Wild-Caught Alaska Salmon Skillet seasoned with garlic and herbs, and served over redskinned potatoes, fresh spinach, sautéed mushrooms and grape tomatoes. The third skillet is a Crazy Spicy Skillet filled with crumbled chorizo, jalapenos, sautéed mushrooms and fire roasted bell peppers and onions blended together with seasoned red-skinned potatoes. The skillet is topped with shredded cheddar cheese, five-pepper sauce and pepperjack queso. Two eggs can be added to the skillet upon request. Since Norma and I were doing a food review, we ordered all three. While we were waiting, we asked our server what she preferred. She said the Smoked Gouda

Chicken and Broccoli Skillet was her favorite, but she often asked for less cheese sauce to make it healthier. My personal favorite was the wild salmon with garlic and herbs served over broccoli and sautéed spinach. There was no cheese to make it fattening and the vegetables were just right. At 730 calories it was the lowest in calories of the three meals, making it perfect for dieters who need to avoid cheese. Norma favored the Crazy Spicy Skillet, which is gluten free. However, it is very spicy, so anyone who cannot tolerate spicy food should go for one of the other two skillets. All meals are under 1000 calories and big enough for all but the heartiest eaters to share or take home leftovers for another meal. And they are reasonably priced with only the prime rib with Gouda cheese costing more than $10. Because we had leftovers Norma took them back to the office where the staff had a “taste fest.” Their favorite was the Crazy Spicy Skillet followed by the Wild Salmon Skillet. The Smoky Gouda Chicken came in third. Make a trip to Denny’s and judge them for yourself.

Fads in entertainment come and go with the generations. But some things never go out of style: * Singing in harmony from the heart * Clean comedy * Real instruments played “live” on stage (with no pre-recorded tracks.) We’re grateful that we’ve been able to do this together for over 40 years. So far. So good!

Cut out this schedule and stick it on your refrigerator.

Two different shows this year: The RED show and the GREEN show. Come see both! (Janey’s hilarious red dress number is in both shows.)

FEBRUARY 23, 2017 I WINTER TEXAN TIMES VALLEY STAR AWARDS

From of numbers, clearly demonstrating why he has been able to perform in some of the country’s hottest musical performance markets such as Branson and now in Las Vegas. Sherwin and Pam Linton were joined on stage by bass player Dick Moebakken as they performed a mix of musical styles, showing that Sherwin does more than Johnny Cash hits. Much to the enjoyment of the audience he performed some remarkable guitar licks while singing Buddy Holly hits like “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue.” But when the last two performers took the stage, it was clear why Bill Chrastil and Leslie Blasing were the Valley’s favorite performers. Chrastil demonstrated his musical versatility as he performed tributes to the likes of Willie Nelson and Conway Twitty. But clearly his ace in the hole was his Elvis Presley sound matched by that Elvis look. When he put on those sunglasses and began to sing, it was almost like the King of Rock and Roll was on stage again right before our eyes. Leslie Blasing then took the stage, and at first pretended to be disappointed because she was last to perform and the other entertainers already took all the good songs she wanted to sing. But that was clearly a light-hearted ruse as she began a masterful performance that brought sheer delight to everyone in the room. That was the perfect setting for the Valley Star Awards, which recognizes the best of the best in the Rio Grande Valley – now commonly called “Little Branson” because so many quality entertainers come here to perform for Winter Texans. While there were 40 entertainers and bands nominated for this year’s awards, four of them rose to the top as clear favorites of the thousands of Winter Texans who voted to make this year’s selections. The top four favorites for Entertainer of the Year overall were Leslie Blasing, last year’s Entertainer of the Year and Female

pg. 1 Vocalist of the Year; Bill Chrastil, last year’s Male Vocalist of the Year; John Sager, a previous Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year recipient; and Dave & Daphne. After seeing the wonderful performances of Bill Chrastil and Leslie Blasing at this year’s Valley Star Awards Show, it was easy to understand why they earned top honors this year – again. Leslie Blasing was voted Female Vocalist of the Year, for the fifth year in a row. And Bill Chrastil was named Male Vocalist of the Year – for the second year in a row – and edged out Leslie to be named this year’s overall Entertainer of the Year. Winter Texans all across the Valley, using ballots published in the Winter Texan Times, voted to make the selections of these awards as well as the winners in eight other entertainment categories. Jason Whorlow was named Individual/ Small Band/Variety Act of the Year, RazzMa-Tazz was voted Musical Group of the Year (not related), and Goldwing was selected as Family Vocal Group of the Year. Other top awards included Gospel Group of the Year, 4 His Glory; Rock N Roll Group of the Year, The Cruisers; Duet Musical Group of the Year, Gordy & Debbie; Country Western Band of the Year, Sweetwater; and finally, Novelty or Comedy Act of the Year, Johnny Ray Gomez. Robert and Billie Ferguson, who put together the Valley Star Awards Show each year, introduced a new award this year, called the Musical Heritage Award, which is dedicated to those who make a significant contribution in providing entertainment for Winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. That award went to Sherwin and Pam Linton. Beginning his career in 1966 with the hit, “Cotton King,” a song that put him at the top of the Country Music Charts, Sherwin recorded many hits during his 61-year career as a performer. Sherwin
