BorderFest is packed with entertainment
There is only one reason why BorderFest is one of the most popular events in the Rio Grande Valley every year. It’s Fun! Last year 67,000 people walked through the gates during the three-day BorderFest celebration, attracted by the wide array of continuous entertainment, gobs of food vendors and that open-air festival atmosphere designed to provide a good time for everyone. Look for the 45-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty in the center of Liberty Square as the 41st annual BorderFest kicks off with a celebration of the USA. Many different activities are planned during this three-day celebration being held this year March 3-5 at State Farm Arena, 2600 N. 10th Street (Hwy 336) in Hidalgo. One of the major attractions of BorderFest every year is the musical entertainment lineup. Some concerts are included with the $10 price of gate admission to BorderFest, while the big name concerts cost extra. Those tickets can be purchased at the State Farm Arena box office in Hidalgo. This year’s festival kicks off Friday, March 3 with country western star Clay Walker who will headline a concert beginning at 8 p.m. The concert is free with BorderFest ticket. Walker is scheduled to go on stage at 10:15, following a set by Matt & The Herdsman on the Main Outdoor Stage. Friday, the gates open at 5 p.m. and each of four stages offer a full lineup of entertainers. The Budweiser Music Experience Stage schedule Friday includes Hidalgo Mariachi, 6 p.m.; Chubby Carrier Zydeco Band, 7:30 p.m.; H-Tres, 9 p.m.; Tony Perez Band, 10 p.m.; and finally Ruben De La Cruz at 11 p.m. Moving over to the CBS Action 4 U.S.A. Stage, at 6 p.m. Magician Pat Davison will perform, followed by Gabriela Ariana at 7:30, Chad Roy Elvis Impersonator at 8:30, Pat Davison again at 9:30 and Clap Super Hero Show at 10:30 p.m. The Hollywood Stage features Hypnotist Erick Kand at 6 p.m.; Illuminated Parade, 7 p.m.; Valley View Mariachi/Folklorico, 7:30; South Texas Indian Dancers, 8:30 and Hypnotist Erick Kand at 9:30
p.m. The Main Outdoor Stage is where Clay Walker is set to perform at 10:15 p.m., but four other groups will take the stage earlier, beginning at 6 p.m. with Pega Pega. They are followed by Los Cadetes De Linares at 7 p.m.; Roy Solis, 8 p.m.; and
Matt & The Herdsman, 9 p.m. Other attractions include a Sea Lion Splash Show, an Interactive Kidz Science Lab, a motorcycle stunt show, South Texas Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts), and a petting zoo. The RGV K9 Training Centre will
Southern Anthem
teach how to train your dog to be a super dog. A White Tiger Discovery program is designed to provide conservation education for the last five tiger species in the wild. With the gates opening at noon on Saturday and Sunday and not closing until midnight, there is a whole lot more action to enjoy – on the stages and off. Saturday, the State Farm Pavilion will be a Winter Texan favorite as familiar entertainers popular in the RV parks perform throughout the afternoon. It starts with Vance Greek at noon, followed by Tavie Spivey at 1 p.m.; Kelli Marie, 2 p.m.; Southern Anthem, 3 p.m. and 4 His Glory, 4 p.m. At 5:30 swing on over to the CBS Action 4 Stage and see the Swing Street Tavie Spivey Band. Showcase II also has popular performers
There were many talented entertainers performing at the second Entertainers’ Showcase held in January. The showcases are held for activity directors so they can hear the newer performers audition as they make decisions on who to book for next season’s entertainment at the parks. Polling the activity directors in an informal survey, Winter Texan Times editor Kathy Olivarez found that the top four groups were so close in the polling that they all fell within a three-point range. The favorite performance of the day was Wade Benson and Teresa Landry’s, “Swingin’ Cajun Style.” Wade’s fiddle led the pack by one point. He entertained the crowd with Cajun humor and then played several lively fiddle tunes playing “Heartache #1,” and “I Can’t Help It If I’m Still in Love with You.” Jason Whorlow, the Piano Man tied for second favorite of the day with Shake Rattle & Roll. He performed the music of Michael Buble, then switched to a honkytonk sound and then switched again to other styles of music. Tavie Spivey’s Shake, Rattle & Roll quartet had great harmony on the oldies like, “Say You Will,” “Let’s Do the Twist,” and “Do You Love Me.” Unfortunately, because the other ladies are still
Wade Benson and Teresa Landry’s
working they have limited engagement times for next year. Any park whose activity director was able to book them is in for a treat because they have a great sound. The Punches Family ranked fourth in the informal poll. With costumed songs like “Guitarzan,” they had the audience in gales of laughter at their antics. There See SHOWCASE pg. 6

were calmer songs like “Blue Bayou” to offset the lively energy filled songs. They were one of the few groups to get applause after their performance. For single performers Kenny Hess outstripped all of the others in getting points, coming in fifth in the morning rankings. Kenny sings country music and prefers to do shows. Hess does a great job on songs like “Just Walk On By,” and “It’s Only Make Believe.” Also popular were Maggie Mae and Diego and Edith, each getting a fair number of points. Afternoons are always harder to judge because there is less time to talk with tour directors. The clear winner of the afternoon was Southern Anthem with Logan the 11-year-old fiddle player playing songs like “Orange Blossom Special” and entertaining the audience with his antics. Makaela has a lovely clear voice and sings a strong lead. Her “Blue Bayou” was excellent while Derek drew applause for his “Auctioneer” song. Adam Pope & the Rebel Connection was nipping at his heels with just two votes separating them. Adam sings traditional country music like “It Ain’t Over Yet,” “Don’t Be a Fool,” and “Movin’ On.” He also throws in a little humor
about a pig in “Mama Fried.” Goldwing was again a favorite with their train whistles and songs, and the way they “made fun of John Sager,” their little friend. One activity director said she hired Goldwing every year because they were so popular in her park. The Richard Lynch Band scored with songs like “Workin’ On My Next Broken Heart,” and “Baby’s Getting Good at Saying Good-bye.” He sings a variety of classic country performers such as George Jones as well as some more modern styles of music. For single singers Jeff Gordon outshined the others with songs like “Standing on the Mountain of Love,” and “My Farewell Party.” The last act was 12-year-old Kelli Marie Christianson. It was impossible to talk to many activity directors to see how they felt about her, but one said Kelli Marie had performed in her park and the people had enjoyed her. The quality of entertainment at this year’s Entertainers’ Showcases was very promising as more and more talented performers come to the Valley each year to perform.

SHARYLAND DENTAL CARE
I am so appreciative and grateful to have a Dentist who focuses on me, the patient when I visit Sharyland Dental and Dr. Young. The staff is always so friendly, informative and strive to make sure my time with them is a comfortable and pleasant experience. Any time I have a dental emergency, Dr. Brann and the staff at Sharyland Dental make every effort to see me as soon as possible. I know that I will receive the best care, knowledge and services when in their hands. Yes, dental work in Mexico is less expensive but I have experienced the downside to low cost dental work. Trying to find a cheaper dentist ultimately cost me a lot more money to repair and a lot more pain to endure. So I make sure to refer Sharyland Dental to all my friends and family because I know they too will be met with the most friendly and professional care that I have. Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers! Back By Request…
Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Amy and Frank did an outstanding job on my right leg and lower back, I feel so good that I can now put on my socks on my own and enjoy my time with my family.” - Reyes Garcia “Lately I am not paying a cleaning lady because I can do it myself!”- Roberta Barriere II “Now I can sleep the night through without pain.”- Marilyn Eisenmenger Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life. I’ve seen it many times. • It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… • It can take your focus away on enjoying your life…like spending time with your children or grandchildren… • It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… • It can ruin your travel plans… • And it can take away your ability to live life…having to rely on others…or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting…not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems…and life problems. Here at Pure Physical Therapy, the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 100’s of people from right here in McAllen, and the rest of Hidalgo County who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica. It’s our SPECIALTY. By request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Pure Physical Therapy in McAllen Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Register now at: Link: purept.ptworkshops.com/mcallen/workshop?source=wtt If you’re confused about what to do and looking for answers, here’s some of what you’ll learn: • The Single Biggest #1 Mistake back pain and sciatica sufferers make which actually stops them from healing… • The 3 Most Common Causes of Lower Back Pain and Sciatica… • A Sure-Fire Way to Pick the Right Treatment for the Cause of Your Pain (and save you a ton of time and money) • How a problem in your back can cause pain, numbness or tingling in your leg… • What successful treatment and permanent relief looks like without the side effects of medications, injections or surgery. How Do I Register for the Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop? Call our office to register at (956) 994-8880. When you register, we will mail you The Lower Back Pain and Sciatica Worksheet which you will bring with you to the event. We only have 40 seats available for the event…and this will be promoted on Face Book and mailed out to the general public.

It was such a hit that local stores were soon asking the Milano’s to make pizzas they could freeze and sell to their customers. Soon the customers were asking the family to open a pizza place. In 1955, they opened their first restaurant on their front porch with “four tables and ten broken chairs.” In 1960, son Lino returned to Italy and married Giovanna Corrente, who eventually became known as “Mama Milano.” They grew the business into the well-known restaurant it is today. Now Giovanna and her three children own it. Today, the restaurant features a variety of Italian foods, many of which are made with ingredients imported from Italy. When the Winter Texan Times visited recently, we started our meal with an order of bruschetta. It was delicious! The olive oil had a light flavor and the bread was homemade, as is all the bread served at Milano’s. The bread was followed by garden fresh vegetable salads with Italian and raspberry dressings made in the restaurant. Then we were served two entrees, which Norma Reyes and I chose to
share. The first was Pollo Marsala, a pan-seared breaded chicken breast topped with sautéed mushrooms, grape tomatoes, and prosciutto in a Marsala wine sauce. The second entrée was Pasta Casino with a Gorgonzola cream sauce with mushrooms, onions, peperoncini peppers and diced tomatoes with slices of baked chicken breast on top. It sat on a bed of bowtie pasta. Both were excellent. We both liked the taste of the Pollo Marsala best. But the spicy sauce of the Chicken Casino was excellent as well and would be favored by those looking for something slightly spicy. We ended our meal with Angela’s cheesecake, which is not your average cheesecake. It had a pecan crust and coconut pudding filling that was covered with a layer of cheesecake and served with cherry sauce. Excellent! Besides the entrees we tried, Milano’s has a line of those famous pizzas
that got them started, several soups and salads including the traditional Italian minestrone soup. There are a number of pasta dishes coupled with chicken and various kinds of seafood. Pork chops and rib eye steaks are also available. And look for traditional desserts like tiramisu and spumoni ice cream. Milano’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. Be sure eating at Milano’s is on the bucket list of things to do in the Rio Grande Valley while you are here! MARCH 2, 2017
Appreciate your activity director
By Billie Ferguson Editor’s note: This article was written by Billie Ferguson. She and her husband, Robert, have been involved in activities for 12 years and have worked at 4 different parks. Robert is currently the president of the Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association, a position he has held for the last 10 years. Help wanted ad for activity director. Sounds like a cushy job, right? Organize a few things for the retired people to do, keep the calendar current, hire some entertainment and bands for dances, sit back and enjoy, right? NOT!!! A good activity director is the heart of the park. They realize that they have the privilege of creating a fun-filled time for retirees who are not ready to sit on the porch and rock. They realize that “their” people have led busy, creative lives before coming to the Rio Grande Valley to be warm in the wintertime. They realize that it is hard for many of their people to be away from the kids and grandkids at the holidays. They realize that the Rio Grande Valley is actually as much home to their people as their homes up north. A good activity director can actually make a lot of money for the owners of the park at the same time they are keep the people happy. When the activities program is successful, the people are busy and happy, they attend programs, they volunteer, they are very loyal to their park. THEY HELP BRING NEW PEOPLE INTO THEIR PARK! Sounds good, so far, doesn’t it? Then why do the parks have such a great turnover in activity directors every year? From our experience and from discussions with other activity directors we have found two big issues. 1. Management and owners – Some managers want to micro-manage the activities. Guidance and cooperation are good, control issues are not. People have been evicted from parks because the manager didn’t want them making waves and questioning the manager’s actions. There have been residents who lost big money because of a manager’s Ponzi scheme. Owners have come in and totally eliminated a good, working program to change it to the “corporate” way. We have watched the people at parks like these move out
in droves. They not only moved out but many moved to Florida or back north and never returned to the Valley. When management and activities work together, it’s amazing how the residents respond. 2. Grouchy people – We know some people don’t feel good or they just aren’t happy. Activity directors have to have thick skin to get along with everyone but sometimes there’s that straw that breaks the camel’s back. Then the activity director might say, “This is my retirement too and I don’t want to put up with this any more.” And another one bites the dust. When management and activities work as a team it’s a beautiful thing! The activity director has the freedom to be creative and management has less complaints from the residents and the people enjoy their retirement. Sounds so easy, doesn’t it? There are all kinds of activity directors. Some are volunteers because no one else will do the job. Some are paid to do their job or receive free lot rent or other perks. And some serve on committees where a group of people make the decisions. All are important. Activities isn’t just something to keep the “old people quiet”, it’s the lifeblood of the park. It can be the difference between your park barely surviving or your park thriving and growing. If you have a good activity director, do everything you can to keep them. Let them know they are appreciated. If you don’t have a good activity director, get one! Work with them and watch your park grow and improve. Healthy, growing 55+ parks are the lifeblood of this Valley. Let’s make them stronger by working together, not just seeing what the bottom line for this month gives us. Look at the big picture! Retirees come south to enjoy their retirement. Let’s do everything we can to make them happy and keep them happy. And then we will all be winners. One last idea: Let’s make March 1 each year Activity Directors Appreciation Day. Show your activity director or activities committee how much you appreciate their hard work during the Winter Texan season. They’ve spent a lot of time creating ways for you to enjoy your retirement more. Appreciation will keep them coming back year after year and will make our parks stronger and healthier.

Special gathering for Valley-wide Kansas Day
Submitted by Larry Schmitt January 25 was a huge day for many Kansans from across the Rio Grande Valley. Some 225 attendees from the Sunflower State gathered at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr to celebrate Kansas Day, four days before its 156th Anniversary. After Bill Niemann, Nortonville, gave the prayer before the lunch, Balli’s Catering from Mission served a delicious, sit-down chicken cordon bleu meal. Key Naysmith, Belleville, enjoyed photographing the crowd as they were served and renewed or made new acquaintances. This annual event is chaired by Paul and Jan Bergman, formerly of Seneca, who arrange for the facility, food service, decorations and prizes. Larry Schmitt,
Shawnee, does the communications and acquires all reservations. Circle your calendar for next year’s big event. On Wednesday, January 24, 2018 (five days before Kansas Day), Kansans who winter in the Rio Grande Valley and those who live here permanently will gather at the Nomad Shrine Club in Pharr. Registration and welcome will be at 9 a.m., followed by a breakfast buffet, then prizes. If you are a Kansan and missed this annual event, don’t miss it next year. Larry Schmitt will send out reminders in the fall, if you will provide your contact information. Email Larry at larrys13@ icloud.com. If no computer access, call 913-369-5669.
Kansas Day was Big Success! A total of 225 residents and former residents of Kansas enjoyed the annual Kansas Day held at the Nomad Shrine Hall in Pharr on Jan. 25. Beverage can tractor to be displayed March 5
Those can recyclers at Magnolia Park have done it again. This time Don Knorr and Frank Ergen built a tractor out of Coke® cans of different types. Last year it was a dune buggy from beer cans. Over 943 beverage cans were collected by residents for the project. The tractor has wide tires made of coke cans that are three cans wide. The exhaust heads were made from Coke Zero® cans and the superchargers were made of diet cokes.
Christmas Coke® cans were used on the front of the tractor. The teddy bear who drove the dune buggy last year is now driving the tractor. Last year’s dune buggy was given to the American Legion and it was recently sold. This year the tractor is going to Minnesota to be shown in parades there during the summer. It will be on display at Magnolia Park on Sunday March 5.

Hart Tour Company brings Minnesota folk to tour Valley
By Kathy Olivarez Ernie and Georgia Hart of Parkers Prairie, Minn. own and operate the Hart Tour Company which operates tours all over the United States and into Canada. For several years they have run a tour that brings a bus full of people from Minnesota to South Texas for a few days of warm weather and enjoyable activities. But those who were coming protested they wanted to stay longer in South Texas. So a couple of years ago, the Harts started bringing a tour that stays two weeks at La Copa Inn in McAllen. “It’s a great location,” said Georgia Hart. “It’s next to a [shopping] mall and close to a K-Mart for shopping or food. There are restaurants around the hotel. Breakfast is included in the cost of the stay. And there is entertainment four times a week from fellow Minnesota residents Sherwin and Pam Linton, who entertain in the Valley during winter months. While they are at La Copa they go to jams and entertainment shows in the parks. Georgia Hart said they went to Winter Ranch RV Resort in Weslaco for a meal and a jam session that was excellent. They also visited McAllen Mobile Park and Southern Oasis in Mission to see a concert with popular entertainers Terry
Smith and Rich Bellert. They visit South Padre Island where guests can walk the beach and pick up seashells, take a dolphin ride or visit Turtle Rehabilitation, Inc. They always enjoy a seafood dinner someplace like Dirty Al’s or Louie’s Backyard before they return back to the hotel. They travel to Progreso, Mexico once or twice while they are here. “Sometimes people are wary the first time we go,” said Ernie Hart. “But by the time we go again, they are ready to shop.” We always go to the Don Wes Flea Market,” said Georgia Hart. “You can shop for bargains and eat a meal with entertainment there. Our guests love it. They also love going to ropa usada.” Other locations they visited this year include an aloe vera plant, the Iwo Jima Memorial in Harlingen, The Museum of South Texas History, La Lomita and the Los Ebanos Ferry. On the day the Winter Texan Times interviewed them, they were going to the Riverside Club to ride the Riverside Dreamer. On Sundays we take them to church. Alamo Rec Veh receives Good Sam Award
By Kathy Olivarez Alamo Rec Veh RV Park was recently surprised to find out they had been selected to receive the Good Sam 2017 Award for Top Snowbird Destinations. Barbara Hamel, general manager, said the award came as a surprise because Alamo Rec Veh was unaware their name had been
submitted for consideration. “It is not an honor we applied for as a park,” explained Hamel. “Some of our residents got together and made the recommendation to Good Sam. We were unaware we were even being considered until we were notified that we had won. It was a total surprise to us, but a very happy

people who are coming for the second or more time.” The Winter Texan Times also spoke with Jim and Alice Ackerman and Sue Lusty who have made the trip eight times. Janice Koester, Diane Chock, and Faye Fauch also joined the conversation. Janice had been a Winter Texan 19 years until her husband died. Now she welcomed the chance to come back for a few days. “What’s not to love about the trip,” said Alice. “I don’t have to cook or make beds.” “But you do have to wash clothes,” said Jim. “No you don’t,” someone else added. Just pick up new ones at ropa usada!” Alice liked sitting by the pool and soaking up the sun. All agreed the best thing about the Valley is the warm weather. It was nine below zero when they left Minnesota. They also love the friendliness of the people in the Valley. They feel welcome everywhere they go. Jim’s favorite part was the trip to South Padre Island, the Don Wes Flea Market and ropa usada. Diane was on her second visit. She loved South Padre Island where she walked on the beach and picked up seashells. No seashells in Minnesota! Several members of the group are already making plans to return next year. Anyone who knows someone who might want to “test the waters” by taking this trip to the Rio Grande Valley should call Ernie at (320) 766-8512.
From pg. 24 Lutheran in McAllen. But last week we went to the mariachi mass at the Shrine in San Juan,” added Ernie Hart. Several couples have enjoyed the Valley so much they have come back as regular Winter Texans after visiting with the tour. The trip is economical for those who come. Hart said the cost was only $2650 for the 25-day trip, hotels and transportation. Guests must pay for their meals and tickets or entrance fees to any shows are attractions they visit. The bus takes them to Luby’s, Cracker Barrel, Mr. Gatti’s, and other local restaurants for meals. The trip also includes stops along the route. This time they stopped in Oklahoma to see things there before coming to Fredericksburg to see the Admiral Nimitz WWII Museum, the YO Wildlife Ranch in Kerrville, and the LBJ Ranch near Austin and the Presidential Library in Austin. They spent a couple of days in San Antonio on the Riverwalk where they could take boat rides, eat in the restaurants, visit the Alamo and the Tower of the Americas and many other options. They also visited the San Jose Mission while in San Antonio. When they leave Texas they will be going through Lafayette, Louisiana, up to Memphis to Graceland, and across to St. Louis to see the arch before going home. “I try to vary the route every year because we have many people who come year after year,” added Ernie Hart. “Sometimes as many as 75 percent of our tour is

Hamel said the resort has 463 spaces and many or their residents return year after year. About 200 residents have stationary units on lots and stay an average of four to five months. Others have moveable units they bring and take back with them. But they still return to Alamo
Rec Veh. The resort offers the usual amenities such as swimming, a pool hall and cards. But it also has a gun range and this year it has become the “Remote Control Capital of the Valley” with a special course built to drive remote control cars, and areas to fly remote control airplanes and operate RC boats. A woodworking shop is under construction. We even have a bocce ball court.” “Jams are important to our residents and we have one every Monday,” stated Hamel. “This year they have been themed jams. One week it was country western but the next week it might be big band era or rock & roll. Jay and Tammy Roy had led the jams for the past six years but they are retiring so we are hiring a $20-$30 new jam leader for next year.” $30-$35 The resort also offers entertainment two to three times a week. “Some of our residents still enjoy going to Progreso (Mexico) and we feel it is safe. There was never been an incident there to make us feel otherwise,” said Hamel. “They go buy (prescription) drugs and do a little shopping.” “But because travel in other parts of Mexico is no longer safe, we have started offering day trips to locations of interest around the Valley at least once a week. These trips have been well accepted by our residents who love learning the history and other unique things about the Rio Grande Valley.” “All of these different activities help keep residents coming back year after year. We are delighted to have been named as the 2017 Good Sam Top Snowbird Destination. And we would like to thank whoever made the nomination that got us the award,” said Hamel.

He said it’s not recommended that homeowners in quarantine areas attempt to eat the fruit from the trees in their yards. “Basically the flies evolve from a larvae from an egg laid in the fruit. That larvae becomes a maggot which becomes a fly so if you cut that orange open it may look fine but you might find a nice little worm or a nice little maggot or any stage that precedes flies and you might not see
